General Discussion / Re: One-Shot Manga
« on: June 18, 2015, 07:29:15 AM »
Lots of series actually start off as a oneshot. Although once the story is picked up it's ends up called the pilot or chapter 00. One Piece was Romance Dawn, Naruto was... still Naruto but the concept was completely different, D.Gray Man was Zone, and I think Bleach was still bleach but idk (and many more series). Not all oneshots are turned into series. In Japan I think it depends on popularity and editors decisions. Don't quote me on that though.

You just have to tell a self contained story. Usually something that introduces the main character and villain that mostly ends in a resolute way (the villain may run away and promise to get revenge idk). The main problem needs to be solved. According to wiki  it can be 15-60 pages.

I recommend reading oneshots of genres you like to see what they did and how they handled it. :D
Good luck!

Sorry I'm a bit swamped atm. I'm working on my own comic as well as other side projects.
I wish you guys luck on finding artists though!

Manga Talk / Re: What Does Your Manga Collection Look Like?
« on: May 17, 2015, 04:08:32 AM »
(the very bottom row -not pictured- is just textbooks.)

Uh... a lot. Mostly Shonen, but I do have Shoujo too. I've been collecting since I was 11. I got a lot of borders gift cards when I was young because no one knew what to buy me. Usually I read online and if I like the series I'll go out of my way to buy the volumes -except for One Piece because they changed Zoro's name to Zolo and that is unforgivable.

I'm not listing them all because I bought the first book of quite a few and then didn't like the series. Another reason to read online first.

Mostly the Major Titles and completed Titles

+Anima (Comlete)
Black Butler (1-3+5)
D.Gray Man (1-23) Favorite Series
Death Note (complete)
Eyeshield 21 (1)
Fruits Basket (complete)
Hunter X Hunter (1-19)
Lovely Complex (1-3)
Reborn (1-16)
Naruto (1-17) Will not be collecting anymore
One Piece (1-3) Will not collect
Magical X Miracle (complete)
Tokyo Mew Mew (Complete +A la Mode)

I also bought Apple Black by WhytManga. I've decided that I will do my best to buy EOL manga to help it out. I plan on buying Saigami by Andrea Voros and some of Mark Crilley's manga... but I don't particularly want Miki Falls or Broady's ghost I hope he has another one more up my alley next- he just has a very westernized style I still follow his youtube and support him whole-heartedly.

Naruto Manga / Re: Latest Naruto Manga chapter

I can't bring myself to read the spinoff.
And it's entirely because Sasuke is still alive.

He basically ditched the village and screwed around accomplishing basically nothing and then showed up for the final fight. And he tried to kill multiple Konoha-nin and got to walk free (all kinds of wtf). I really hate Kishimoto's favoritism toward Sasuke.

Graphic Softwares / Re: Tablet Types

I use an 8 year old wacom bamboo. It's not bad, I've had a different tablet briefly but it's lifespan was much shorter because I'm a mobile artist so I move around a lot. It only lasted about a year...

I imagine that the more expensive tablets like intuos are probably better.

Manga Studio and Clip Studio Paint are the exact same program.
Manga Studio is the hard copy (you get a cd).
And Clip Studio Paint is the digital download.

I use Manga Studio.

A lot of professionals use Cintiqs.  Although this might just be because for a long time Wacom was the only brand available. All the alternatives are trying to match or at least compete with the cintiq. Don't get me wrong you don't need something as expensive as a cintiq to make great art.
(infact I really want to try the Huion or Monoprice but at the same time I want a model with hot keys because I'm left handed and so far no competitive brands have hotkeys tragically.)

You might be right, it's probably Wacom itself is the industry standard. Although I can't help but notice all of my favorite artists use cintiqs specifically.

I've only used a tablet. There is a learning curve but it's just hand-eye coordination adjustment. Once you get used to it you'll be fine. Drawing with a mouse is horrible I would never recommend it.

I do want to buy a interactive pen display, but I'm currently doing research. A cintiq is considered the industry standard but there are a lot of competitor brands popping up that are much cheaper. The problem is finding out which one is best. Huion, Monoprice, Turcom, Ugee, and there is another one that starts with a Y but I can't remember it (it's either a german or swedish brand).

I recommend a tablet for your first because they are cheaper and can last a long time. You can find cheaper alternatives to wacom in the brands I mentioned above.

I haven't read Magi (but it's on my list).
I have to say my favorite is Hisoka from HunterXHunter.
But I might have a thing for clowns. ;>.>

General Discussion / Re: A Question for Artists
« on: March 24, 2015, 09:35:10 PM »
Every artist is different so there isn't a secret catch all.
I prefer stories already written, because if I'm going to end up helping write the story and the art why don't I just write it myself anyway. But I also tend to dislike a lot of stories because they don't have enough female characters (that are well written or too much fan service).

Some like to collab evenly some like to direct the story. I think most people that want to collab want to help direct the story.

The reason why artists want to see that you've written at least some is too prove you didn't just come up with an idea and put no thought into it and just instantly hunted out an artist before coming up with more than a concept.

General Discussion / Over-Thinking VS Too Simplistic
« on: March 17, 2015, 05:36:02 AM »
Recently I keep running into the problem of over-thinking plot. I find myself getting frustrated when I can't find reasons for "x" thing to exist or "y" event to happen. After rereading some manga I keep noticing that they don't actually have a super elaborate reason for anything to exist.

Like with my drawings I have a similar struggle or over-thinking things and never being happy with the outcome. I've been trying to teach myself to let go and not make everything have an answer but it's hard. It's like trying to go through a wall, I just don't get it.
Spoiler

There is also the other side of the coin. Although I haven't experienced it. Just making random things happen because you can. When it gets too simplistic it starts to run into gag manga territory. Although I'd be interested to hear some other faults with having it be too simplistic.

I wonder if there is a line between letting things just exist and having them warrant explanation.

I like the perspective of the second to last one. I really think once you get a tablet your productivity will increase. Since your so good with a mouse I definitely want to see what you can do with a tablet.

Thank you both!
I'm not working on any long projects atm (not for free anyway)

I tried to ink a page traditionally and my backgrounds need some work. I kept hitting the ruler and smearing the ink. Especially when it came to effect lines. Oh well, it's experience. Since I fail with a scanner I just took a photo.

Paper size is A4 (I should have done it on B4)

It's a 22 minute podcast. So no. I don't even listen to podcasts from letsplayers I like. I got through five minutes then realized exactly how long it was.

Money is pretty important. Everyone tries to convince you that it's not but it is especially if you've tried to live without it. Sadly. "Money won't solve all your problems" is true, but it would solve most of them.

Don't get me wrong I'm not looking for marriage or a partner. I've noticed that all my fantasies are me living alone in a decently sized house with friends/assistants that either live in or come by frequently.A workroom with 2 to 3 bedrooms 2 baths and a decently sized kitchen and living room.
Maybe not even assistants but other comic artists that work together on our own stories and share ideas <3 <3 <3 or tell what are plans for our next story arcs are~
