Hi Guys,
finally getting around to posting my own own comic. It's called Seedling.
Here's the synopsis: A little boy growing up in a rural town tries to grow a melon.
I'm going to post the first 6 pages here and you can follow the link in my signature to the rest of the comic, mostly because i prefer to have more control over presentation than a forum post :p

try looking on amazon for a printer, or scanner. the popular/well reviewed ones will show up easily in the search results.
probably stay away from the combo ones though, those never work out well.

i think the characters in the background are actually supposed to have white uniforms, but it could also be just a matter of things in the foreground get detail and you get sort of be rough with the background (its a bit like how eyes are better at close up than distance... unless you're far sighted)
i've noticed that the full character in shadow bit is used a lot either when the characters front is in shadow (away from a light source), which is a bit of a "well duh", or when there's intense emotion like shock, anger, sadness etc.

I think the most annoying thing about trees and forest drawing is that it can be time consuming if you let it get away from you. The most useful thing to remember is that the farther away things are, the less detail you have to put in. So for a far away forest you could probably get away with vaguely foresty blob. For a far away tree, likewise a treelike silhouette is enough. The closer you get the more detail you need. If your camera is right up against a tree trunk you need to do all the crinkles in the bark. If there are more trees farther away in the background though, you can get less detailed with this.
And don't worry about whether this is cheating or being lame. it's how your eye works too. Even people with 20/20 vision will see farther away things in less detail :p

my favorite is probably the one of minato. great foreshortening and the hands look just fine there :)
for the colored ones, my one advice is to focus more on the inking. maybe try varying the weight of the lines more!
love the improvement since 2011. it's always fascinating to see those memes.

yup, i agree with MissChurro, your inking is amazing! I especially love the last 2, your work on the hair highlights is mind boggling!

honestly there's nothing better for improving than just drawing a ton.
In my opinion that's probably what art classes are best at, lighting a fire under your bottom so you /have/ to draw.
That said there's also working smart vs working hard. The best way to approach it is pick one aspect of your drawing you want to improve and then read up on that particular technique. Anatomy is a favorite. Perspective is another good one. Or maybe you want to learn inking technique, go on to amazon and look up good books on inking.
If you have a favorite artist, start copying their work. But don't just copy, also try to get into their mind set to see why they made certain stylistic decisions in certain parts of their work, so that you can apply it to your own.
I keep a sticky note on my phone (digitally, paper is so stone age :p ) of the artist i want to figure out, and various other things i'm interested in, like story boarding, composition, etc, followed by a list of books that look like they'll help in those areas.

I like "Figure Drawing for All it's Worth" by Andrew Loomis
If i have a specific thing i'm looking for i'll probably use the internet, but i think it's worth taking time out of my usual comic production routine to hone the basic skills. When I do find that time (... which is almost never) i try to work on copies of a couple figures here and there.
Honestly it doesn't particularly matter what you copy off of, body building book, internet, whatever. But I find Loomis has a really good explanation for some of the trickier things, such as foreshortening and perspective, and how to build a scene with multiple people, etc.

Those are some amazing portraits! Honestly while I do love manga art, I think most manga artists could learn a lot more from stepping back from the how to draw manga books and doing more photo-real works. So kudos to you for that. (Also having recently done a ton of RDJ sketches myself, *high five*)

Yup. That sounds like it could get to be a total pain. Also screw those main stream comic guys who turn their noses up at things just because they look too manga. And vice versa. For a long time i'd lie about my style being not-manga like so that the hipster comic readers wouldn't think i was a dork.

both are a series of short stories that are loosely connected into a larger/longer term story, and both are my favourites. I haven't found a single anime more memorable than those two since i saw them .... 8 years ago. Jeez. Time flies. Gonna have to get a walker soon :p

i do something similar to Vacant, except instead of starting with an archetype necessarily, i begin with a story premise and then try to figure out what kind of characters are necessary to make it work
Once i have that i look at the people i know to flesh out the details. For the current story, i didn't use close friends but actually people i only sort-of know. I wrote them the way I imagine them to be using what i do know of them as a starting point. That way I got a bit of real world inspiration but also some imagination inspired glamour to them.
