Develop Your Story / Re: does it sound good
« on: October 24, 2014, 02:55:05 AM »
I got the simple action adventure part but I guess I misread the details of the concept, sorry. I figured the aliens are using the fighters as guinea pigs (hence the experimenting on them) in their quest to improve their own alien soldiers to fight against powerful rival alien races (because the aliens see humans as test subjects and not much of a threat…until main character becomes the super champion and turns the tides, establishing humans as one of those powerful rival races). And I assume they offer a prize to the champion because they will get better results/data from motivated fighters.

My mistake, but I’m still always up for a simple action adventure!

Looks like a clean/simple concept. I would read it

Personalities aren’t “stock” items when you’re talking about developing a character from scratch. You can do anything with them! The reason so many characters start out “weak/flawed” is so they can grow and develop. That’s for character-driven stories, mind you. Characters in an event-driven story should be approached differently.

My personal experience with using “shards of my personality” has been one of the most difficult challenges I’ve faced. But totally worth it. You definitely get a new layer of depth from it.

I find having a visual idea of the character helps me find their personality. An exercise I use is ROUGHLY sketch clothing/attire appropriate to the setting. Did my subconscious tell me anything? Is there anything unintentionally quirky? Some flair? Style? More often than not, something sparks and that 5 minute sketch turns into a half hour and suddenly my character has written –or drawn- his/herself. (*Note: my drawing skills leave a lot to be desired…like a lot a lot)

For me, it starts with a character concept or even just a name. And usually it’s just a supporting character (I’m rarely drawn to the protagonist). Once I’m all excited about my character the thought process just sorta starts running. “What kind of world do they live in”? “What’s their role in society”? “Who else is there”? And it sort of just dominoes after that until a story develops!

I find the best thing about having my story concepts semi-based on a supporting character is I’m not as stubborn about fixing the story itself when I find plot holes, etc. Keeps me flexible and more creative.

Kuroko no Basuke 2nd season! and I'll probably check out Diamond no Ace. I'm rarely disappointed by sports anime.

I finally finished watching it just a couple weeks ago but I wasn't a big fan. Overall it was a nice crisp and colourful series with its own unique character. The concept/ideas were a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, nothing really grabbed me about the series, and I found the character changes a bit too dramatic (like... BAM! you've just aged 15 years).

I won't be watching the second series but I'm at least tempted to check out the movie!

Right now I'm loving One OK Rock and NICO Touches the Walls. Especially when I go for a run or am highway driving.

I used to lose interest when setting up background or events. So instead of forcing myself to drone on and write the "what's next", I write in a non-linear fashion! On "time-for-awesomeness" days, I write a main event/flashback/ending (what I'm most excited about) and fill in the blanks later on my less-fired-up days, using that event/ending for ideas and inspiration. Like writing backwards according to the day's mood/pace/rhythm? Plus knowing what happens in Event A and Event B, it can be a lot easier to connect the events smoothly.

Writing what I want when I want helps me keep pace in the long run. For my forced-to-write days, I've already done the heavy lifting so I don't have to fight an uphill battle trying to come up with something outstanding or creative. Instead I can just do the grunt work of tying things together.

J-Rock radio. It helps me focus by drowning out people, cars, etc. and I find english lyrics distract me easily. Plus, since I'm working on a light, fast-paced story right now I find J-Rock helps me keep a consistent rhythm. Unfortunately, with radio comes risk. I've been the victim of the random slow song in major key bringing me to a complete stop a few too many times but a quick adjustment and I'm usually back on track.

I love Borderlands! How could I not fall in love after finding my 4x Zoom Hellfire SMG? Finished 1+expansions and 2 but the repetition definitely eats at ya.
