yeah resolution is a finicky thing. a brush usually has its preferred amount of resolution that it wants to be worked at.
gonna be taking a break from sketch survival for a bit, got to refocus on other stuff rn.

thanks operative

@suuper: it is snow! it's not really a canyon but a mountain of some sort, i just had canyon ref for rock inspiration
a lot of the time this is the only drawing i do for the day, so yeah overall we have pretty different intentions we come to for doing sketch survival.

day 39: did a drawing of this photo i took in my house a long time ago

Both are fine. If you're in the U.S., jetpens is also a good online store for pens (i'm not sure how expensive the international shipping is since they're based in the U.S.)

nice! that's easily one of your best sketches for sketch survival. the posing, the overall composition, the hair and the face, the head. i really like it overall, there's a great feeling to the drawing.

continuing with more environment stuff, mostly from imagination here but had some pics up of canyons that I took a look at for texture and some shape inspiration

girls last tour definitely does have that feeling to it doesn't it. The environments are really great in it though honestly, and the camera selection/composition is really good I feel. It's sketchy in places but his work shows a good grasp of the environments and objects that he's drawing, and an ample amount of research involved for drawing objects in certain arcs (the airplane arc i'm sure had a lot of research involved).

BGs can take a lot of time yeah, there's more strokes you have to make a lot of the time to complete it. Though thankfully, in general, it takes less cognitive effort to draw than the characters I think, which is nice.

Nice drawing, you really nailed the hands. I'm starting to see your work starting to evolve. So whatever you're doing, you keep doing it too. This may end up becoming a pretty good year for both of us .

If I may, I think I'm starting to get to the point where my daily sketch is starting to feel like a habit. So that's good. I imagine in another month we will have settled in even further.

As for myself, I'm going to start using reference for all the sketches I post. It's been a habit of mine to go without using them (not only here, but frequently elsewhere), and I've only used them when I truly had no idea how to draw something (like - eagles, the initial environment sketch I drew, bikini, perfect cell, etc). But there's this wall that I'm starting to hit, where there's too many things I can't draw convincingly from imagination and it's limiting my creative capacity. And it also makes things unnecessarily difficult for me. Though I'm going to use reference my intention is to not copy it but simply to reinforce my lack of knowledge and ability where it's needed, and to become able to include things I've never drawn before or are not good at drawing from imagination in my drawings.

So with that out of the way, what is essentially some practice drawing trees:

General Discussion / Re: A Few Questions

My own page rate (though i haven't drawn manga pages in a while), if i had to estimate from draft to finish, would be like 4 hours for the easier pages.

Anime is tough. Sound, music, and even just barebone animation is a lot more work. And you would want to get decent at all these aspects. But, leaving out voice acting is like leaving out one of the most important aspects of animation. It's like pizza without bread. So, for storytellers, I really think anime should be reserved for small teams at least like what this team on youtube is doing. Anime is great usually because it is such a large team endeavor, overall it is a very energy and time inefficient way to get your stories out there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvH6khNuFtg

I think most working mangaka today have enough stories to tell that they will pass away before being able to tell them all. Professional-level manga pages for a single person takes like 4 hours at least to draw and that's being generous. That's just the easier pages; some pages can take 5, 6, 7 hours depending on how complex the page is. Manga pages in general are just really jampacked. So realistically you see solo pro mangaka doing only a single 30 page chapter per month.

So as to why I told you that, I'm not sure completely but it seems as if you want to finish telling all your stories. But why? By the time you finish telling the stories you have now, you will have come up with more stories to tell, so you're never going to be done. Just putting that out there.

I think for you an illustrated novel dispersed with manga pages would be good. Just do manga pages for the key moments. A lot of manga take long to make because every moment needs to be drawn. Sometimes you can't just timeskip; it'll ruin the readers sense of time and attachment to the story. So illustrated novels (really, light novels) will let you tell your stories faster.

so tl;dr i honestly think manga or illustrated novels are your best bet. don't spread yourself too thin my man. with the anime you just give yourself way more you have to take care of and it'll slow you down. if your work is interesting and good then it will get readers if you share it at the right places.

i've been taking a look recently at how other manga do their backgrounds and toning/hatching, particularly girls last tour, and the promised neverland. how they do stuff like night scenes, they tone the whole panel gray first and then work from there it seems. the use of black in the background is also inspired a lot of by girls last tour. from here forth im probably going to spend a lot more working on improving my background skill. looking at girls last tour and the author's other manga i realized i don't need to get more character drawing skill and that i should swap over to bg.

though i gotta take a breather i went way too hard last night, i gave myself a headache and even today i'm still a little unwell . brainstorming ideas, finding a decent thumbnail, roughsketch, tighter drawing, and then toning, i'm not used to doing all that  :sure: but i think I learned a lot from it fortunately. i should take some time and practice drawing forests.

day 36: something fairly quick unlike the last couple. I tried to do a more direct form of drawing with less guidelines and erasing but it's hard even if i spend more time thinking about each line. makes me respect people who are able to do this kind of thing well, but i guess i'm just out of practice for this sort of thing too.

ohoho cityscapes.
i'm running away from the sequential art for now, scary scary
something i realized is my sketches lack use of black fills, that's why they lack power and emotion, almost like ghosts. And the balance of the images get ruined if I add hatch shading without using black fills. So i've solved that conundrum.

aaaa i think my soul is about to leave my body. there's no way this is a sketch anymore. day 33.

@suuper: it has a good style look, definitely worth experimenting more with
for sequential art right now i'm just completely winging it and not worried about where this goes. i'm just having fun with it and taking it day by day.

i was inspired a bit by some rusty building i saw from a photograph, so yeah

day 32: going to mess around a bit with sequential art
dunno how long i'll be able to keep it up though cuz it takes waay longer. used a perspective ruler for the buildings so that helped a lot though.
