I know the picture is not supposed to look pretty, but since the original is not exactly like that, you could use some tips to make the image look good while still not making it attractive.
While the eyes do look kinda like that, just doing two elipses can be a bit boring, but the thing with eyes is that they don't necessarily have to be a perfect shape, with symmetrical eyelids to look ok. (good news!)
In the book I read there are examples of how to draw the eye more accurately. Look at the eye that is marked in the example, the one with the words "curve, straight, curve, straight" you can try to follow that to give the eye basically the same shape you did before but making it look a bit more realistic and see if it looks better that way.
Eyes can be really expressive, defining of the figure, and are really fun to do as well. You can really try hundreds of types of eyes all different from the others.
I drew some quick curves to show how it could be done here, but not necessarily the only way, just one.
Even if the point in the picture is to not make it look beautiful, the picture can still be more interesting by using more detailed, complex or different kind eyes.
Although looking at the photo you posted:
The eyes, are, actually, supposed to look much more femenine and pretty than what was attempted, so you can give yourself more credit by working on them a bit more.
(excuse the sloppyness and doing it in a used paper but I didn't have much paper)
I only have your eyes as reference, and while the overall face could look uglier in theory, the part of the eyes should actually be pretty to be more faithful to the original imo given the actual shape and femenine look of the area of the eyes, the eye shape and eyelashes.
I don't know about the rest, but even with big lips you can make a pretty good attempt at making the face look more complex by working on it more patiently.
(Not perfect but a good try is a good try haha)
It may not be perfect but trying will give you a more general grasp of how to do it and it will be much more fun, I think, than just drawing it blindly. You don't even have to follow the examples exactly, in fact, you can and should try several different types and styles of eyes, bigger, narrower, thicker, smaller, thinner, different pupils, darker eyes, lighter eyes, more defined, less defined, also eyebrows, every single thing you make changes the entire picture completely and changing stuff with complete liberty is not only fun, it actually improves a lot your way of perceiving everything in the head structure.
Look at the head and try to locate where everything goes, how distant one thing is from another, and then...... just go crazy and try your own stuff. At least its more interesting than just drawing two simple eyes.
(btw, sorry about posting my own examples, I don't like doing that, but I don't have a fancy tablet to work with or anything, so I used one from google and the rest I did them on pencil to illustrate my point.)
Oh and another tip, try to make smoother and longer lines instead, those look better in some areas, its going to be difficult though so I wish you good luck with that, otherwise nice pictures. XD
