WIP of my next piece in keeping with the magical girls theme I've somehow got going now!


The inspiration for this one was: Shinto + necromancy and a little bit of dark industrial somehow made it's way into this one. I wanted to do something different in feeling from the last picture I did so I went for something a bit darker. Really had to be conscious not to overload the design this time around, itako/miko outfits can have some crazy detailed designs on them.

Ah sorry, I probably shouldn't call it a technique. It isn't any kind of like formal art thing just a happy accident I stumbled on. It's rather subtle so I'll try to show it a bit more in my next piece but I can give a quick explanation of what I did right now.

TL;DR at the bottom

Basically, I was using pure blacks on the pen tool previously to do my line art which is perfectly normal for a lot of artwork in this field. The problem I had was I simply wasn't doing my line work clean enough and I wasn't using a good enough variety in line weight to make my pieces look a bit more natural. The pure black itself wasn't helping much either, it works fine for grey scale pictures but on illustrations with soft curves and edges it actually makes it all look rather unnatural. To top it off, you have to be very precise, like near pixel perfect or you'll start getting warbly lines when you start inking.

My solution was to try a different tool, and what I decided to use instead was to use water colors/oil paints for the line art. That why when I render the actual line art I can blend it a bit more with the natural tones on whatever I'm coloring. This is closer to how things look in real life I think, it lets me shade the actual line art itself as well which helps it blend and makes the subject look more a part of the space than detached from it (you can see the opposite happening in the picture of Kanbaru that I did, she pops out TOO much compared to the scene).

It's a rather subtle change and I didn't nail it 100% in the picture I did, but I'm gonna try and refine this more as I figure out more how to properly apply this but the short of it is essentially:

Try using paint brushes and blending your line art more when you move into the inking phase if you want a softer image rather than using pure blacks on the pen tool. Vary your line weight a bit as well.

So I'm trying out some new techniques for coloring + line art and this little experiment resulted in one of my favorite character designs to date! I'm really happy with how this turned out!


A little backstory to introduce the character:

Her name is Charlotte Merryweather, she's a pirate witch on a journey to discover who she is. After her mother, the supreme evil witch of the swamp was executed for her crimes, Charlotte is given the last possessions of her mother. She receives a magical hat, and a compass that points only towards her father, an infamous pirate and the only one with answers about her heritage.

Along her journey she is tricked into joining a band of pirates who were only interested in exploiting her powers. Duped into thinking these pirates are a part of her father's group, she ends up traveling with these tricksters but as time passes, both the pirates and Charlotte learn that family is sometimes more than just blood.
This piece is still technically WIP, I actually have a more complex background set that I just haven't gotten around to drawing yet.

I'm also working on a complete character reference sheet for this character at this moment, I'm gonna use this as the standard of quality for commissions I take for character portraits. Time to go back and see how applying this technique will look on some of my older works!

Maybe something like a simple gradient and/or texture on the background will help it pop a bit more?

If I had to suggest anything, I would say establishing a good color palette to use and sticking with it will help with consistency. Right now there is a lot of white on white, and a lot of colors only show up once. It sort of makes everything feel a bit disjointed. Having higher contrast tones and using some more reddish (but not deep reds) tones may help a bit.

I think the colors on the title itself could use some work, I'm not really feeling the teals and yellows. It aesthetically comes across as less casino and more candy shop to me.

In terms of visual hierarchy, I assume you want the characters to be the focus of your title? I would actually make the title card itself much larger, and place it behind the characters so that some of the character's heads are kind of obscuring it. Then maybe have a strong light cast on the characters that also illuminates the title card behind them while casting some succubus shadows onto the wall behind them. You can even get a bit creative here if you want and have the shadows being cast frame the actual title or something.

The wall itself could just be a simple alleyway wall or you could try something more casino-esque. Not sure if any of these ideas may help but as it stands right now it's a functional but rather unassuming cover.

Here are some color palettes from various media sources that might give you some inspiration:

(this one has kind of a tacky color scheme but I usually think purple velvet, blue tones and reds when I think of a casino and this one great mixture of cooler tones)

(These are from the casino stage in Persona 5, this particular area is great at showcasing the really gaudy nature of casinos with the overblown purples and lots and lots of lights everywhere. Persona 5 has an excellent color palette to steal from if you're looking to nail that casino aesthetic. You could also try reds/blacks since those colors remind me of roulette wheels)

(A similar cover idea to yours I think, might help to look at this one. Particularly the way the title is slightly off center, asymmetry makes things like covers more interesting and it might be worth it to try skewing your title off to one side more in order to balance white space better)

(Not much to say about this one, just thought I should mention it. This is a fantastic cover and I can't really say why it's related to yours because spoilers but it showcases how a strong color palette can help really bring a cover together)

Sorry if I'm giving bad advice here, I should look into what Llueve Sangre is actually about but at a glance this is what I came up with. Hope this helps!

Thanks, Eukocar! I appreciate it! I still have a long way to go, but I do feel like I`m making gradual improvements here and there. You can definitely reach this level too, I found that going back to basics and just getting through the fundamentals again and again helped a lot.

I have decided that I am going to be doing a bunch of pinups of random characters to add to my art portfolio as I get ready to take commissions. The theme of these works will be the Monogatari girls!

Since I already did a few, I am going to improve them over the next few days. Here is a WIP of Kanbaru! Current background is just a placeholder.

(WARNING: somewhat ecchi, I have censored the naughty bits)

I think Forlorn is referring to canvas flipping. Most art programs have a function that's usually titled something like "flip horizontal" or "flip vertical", AKA mirroring. If you're using Clip Studio, it's under the view tab, doing this lets you view a mirrored version of your work to make sure you're balancing your picture and not skewing too much towards one side.

It's a pretty infamous problem that newer artists tend to have, I still have issues with this myself. Flipping your canvas can be a really good way to check and avoid this issue.

Lots of big stuff coming up soon! I've got ~ 3 full scenes I'm working on as well as 2 full character reference sheets, planning on taking up commissions soon once I've refined my skills more. I think I still need a lot of practice before I'm ready to do paid work but at least I'm making progress!

In the mean time, have some WIPs pinups I've been chipping away at. I'm thinking of using these (once they are finished) as sample pieces for commissions.

Weird accidental theme happened while I was doing these pictures, bitter rivals that reconciled ended up just happening. I guess I like these kinds of characters! Anyway, here's a picture of Ryuko and Satsuki from KLK, made it a summer season one since the last one I did was a wintery one!

Thanks! Glad you like it! Yeah I got the same critique from a friend on Discord. I tend to make legs on a lot of my characters too long, I guess it's just how I sketch stuff.

Small update! I liked the sketch I did so much I did some more "designing" to try and flesh out my process. Conceptualized a mecha/armored monk type character. I had a lot of notes on the process and concept but basically this is how I design stuff.
