Title: TK-Seki's Studio
Post by: TK-Seki on November 09, 2013, 10:21:41 PM

I'll be updating this post from time to time as my gallery fills up.

I'll be sharing a few of my works here. They're a mix of fan art and original works, but I'd daresay it's mostly manga progress snapshots. I'll answer questions, too, if any! ^^ Don't be shy, I don't bite. -huehuehue-

Depending on how large the workarea is and the kind of paper I'm using, it can be anything. -laughs- Colored pencils, watercolor pencils or plain watercolor, waterbased markers, pen and ink, soft pastels, Copics, etc. orz it's a handful. Haha.

Only one story at the moment for NaNo, and I've got the pages going one per day, but it's a hurried challenge (so even the inked and pencil shaded pages look half-assed) so I'll be revising stuff at the end of the month. -laughs- Then it's full blown manga.

Yep. I can't lag behind, because once you break your pace it's going to bite you back. -laughs- It's not hush-hush. I have it on my Livejournal. I can post them here, if you'd like. I don't think it qualifies in the manga gallery since the pages aren't fully rendered. XDDD

Great colouring! Whoa, and you're doing nano huh? Welcome to the crew.

Yay! Thanks! Yes, NaNo. It's my first, but I think the June one's more challenging. It's pretty much freestyle through November.

I noticed. XD Even if it was penciled, I was hella lazy to correct it. Bishounen style? Didn't cross my mind, but I do read a good mix of shounen and shoujo manga. I hope it'll look better with revision.

As for the title, I got it off looking for terms that would go with the techy plot.. "able to automatically synchronize (with each other/anything)". ^^

What I'm doing at the moment for NaNo. Ye~p. It took me a while to get the pencils clearly lined so I can ink properly. Because it's a page per day challenge, I couldn't take my time to carefully do the pages well. I will be revising everything after NaNo. Less-sucky art and inking. This one, though, would be one of the well-off pages.

Always a good pencil/pencils. Sometimes I'm afraid to ink a drawing if it already looked good in pencil! D: I end up just directly scanning, cleaning and rendering it as is.

A snapshot of the page I was doing. I didn't add tones, so I made do with the pencil shading. Sorry. The corner's a bit blurred out and a little bit of the page has been cut off on the right when I took the shot.

I'd hate to lag behind schedule. XD So I had to be strict about getting stuff done by -insert time limit- orz

Wow k-seki! You are really talented :santa:

If I may ask, what are your goals for making manga?

To be honest, I've never contemplated that deeply. Monetary gain is the least of my concerns for it (if there's a commission, then that's fine too), reputation, perhaps-- but because it's necessary if the manga was to have readers.

Pardon me if it sounds childish- I do dream of catching up to the many mangaka I admire. The deepest reason for drawing manga is because I would like to see people enjoy my works, too. :)

I find my biggest issue with these drawings is nothing to do with the drawings themselves, but the panelling. They don't seem to have "flow" to them - if that makes any sense. It kinda seems like the dragon is attacking but also isn't, and kinda just is confusing to read. This probably isn't aided by the lack of speech bubbles, but I assume those are a WIP. I just think you are making your audience's job difficult when they are reading this. I would suggest working on visual story telling first; make sure you can convey a story without having to rely on words or sounds.

Second issue: line weight. Since you aren't shading you really need to use the lineweight to your advantage, otherwise you cannot convey depth to your audience. You have nice outlines I notice, but I feel you could work a bit more on this area to really make it stand out.

Lastly, anatomy. My gripe is that it is quite simple, and there are some mistakes particularly around the arm area. I would make some studies on how the elbow joint works, for you have drawn them as if the bottom of the arm is facing towards us; despite that not making much sense given the pose. As for the simplicity, this can be effective in some scenarios. But I find that the detail you put into your monster/dragons and faces is not equally balanced out. Pretty cool though, keep at it

EDIT: Actually one more point; dynamics. These images seem to lack it, which is crippling when you are drawing action sequences. Best example being this here:

https://m.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-f.ak/hphotos-ak-ash3/s720x720/529499_10202354042482050_1845189686_n.jpg

In addition to what Demonfyre said, your characters look very stiff. In particular, the pannel in the middle of the last page, where he has his arm up, he looks like he's just standing there while blocking (I assume he's blocking) the dragon's thingies.
(But I'm mostly just speaking out of jealousy so don't mind me)
Title: Re: K-Seki's Den
Post by: Lumaria on November 14, 2013, 03:40:33 PM
i dont really see strong issues with anatomy, but i suppose the subtlest things that need to be fixed are the most important. anyways....but i think the issues are the perspectives. I do find them just slightly stiff. but only slightly. when theres fast-paced action and the character is reacting to it, he needs to move just as fast if he wants to block such attacks. So when he raises his hand, it looks like he had it up there for a good while considering how "casual" it doesn't look like he quickly reacted and is holding a pose. so his arms, would look more stiff. basically, he doesn't look "alert".

on an incredibly minor note: i do find your dragon incredibly simple. very simple shaped. almost like blue eyes white dragon from yu gi oh but even simpler. so maybe give some specific dimension to it just to show that you can.

i also agree on paneling. some over lap another in an inconsistent way. try to avoid that. put some equal distance between them.

Post by: Demonfyre on November 14, 2013, 04:03:51 PM
You are right, it is the subtleties generally. For example - just in case I explained poorly - compare between the upper panel of the recent drawing and this outstretched arm:

Spoiler
(http://qw88nb88.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/rotation-right-arm.jpg)

Notice how the drawn arm is very linear and straight, but in the real life entity you can see indications of musculature etc. This is the kinda thing which the comic lacks, especially in something with fighting  :o but that is what I would expect, your call :)

Finallyyyyyyyy!! Critiques! orz I've been waiting forever! -laughs-

Paneling has always been awkward around me, so the reason why I'm out getting manga was to get some references of how artists tend to panel works. I do agree that I need to improve on it, and it sometimes limits how my characters' actions tend to go. =_Q my recent page ended up looking dead. -wince- perhaps I should have kept up with the motion lines.

Yes, the page at the bottom of it all, is far from a complete piece of work, since I havent come round to cleaning and adding the tones for its depth and effects. These pages are going to be revised once I formalize the manga after the NaNo challenge. I haven't paid much attention to the details since everything had to be rushed in a day. orz my apologies. I'll take your critiques into account, you guys. thank you!

very stiff bodies, they look very flat and 2D. also the hands are rediculously small. a hand is supposed to be able to cover a face, or most of it. yours look like they can fit in the dudes mouth. this is mostly apparent in the first pannel of the latest one u posted...

-winks- The chocolate is my favorite. I'm saving it for last.

You keep making that arm mistake when it is bent and the posterior side is facing us. Here are some references:

Spoiler
(http://waspscorner.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/blog04.jpg)

I would seriously consider doing some joint studies, since that seems to be where most of the issues radiate from. It is hard to describe exactly what the problem with the arms is, think it may have something to do with a lack of muscle indication, but i'm still trying to work out what is truly bugging me. Also I like the detailed eye shot... but the eyes appear to be different lengths and widths, get a ruler and make sure they are roughly symmetrical in dimensions - or else they will look odd. I also think you should do some studies of clothing - particularly scarfs in the wind, since they look a bit stiff at times and don't really react as I would expect.

Post by: TK-Seki on November 20, 2013, 06:07:40 PM
Note taken, Demon. Thanks! I did have references for the arms, and yes-- I'll work on adding movement effectively more. ^_^ (I might have made the scarf a bit large) Ettou-- the virus' proportions, I've been trying to distort them. At the least, that character wasn't meant to look like a normal person. -laughs- any tips for it?
Title: Re: K-Seki's Den
Post by: Demonfyre on November 20, 2013, 06:14:12 PM
Very welcome :) If you want to make something truly inhuman, the best tip I can offer is using a lack of symmetry to your advantage. Our minds are conditioned to recognize symmetry and human shapes, so if you play about with that you can "trick" your audience in a way. It really depends on what type of lack of normality you are going for. Is he a monster/alien/experiment etc? If you play about with the things involved with human recognition (i.e. the face, the way they stand, hair deposits and such) then you can distort our perception.

Welp, NaNo's over and I was one page shy of it! orzzzzzz I hope I'll be able to make it next time! Now that that's over, I've started to put my other projects and collabs to action. Character designs and sheets first! Since the pressure's off, I can take my time and prepare the pages better. Evaluating my own works-- well I really need to add a bit of detail and movement in critical scenes. So there yah guys go. -Laughs- I'll keep working on my art! Gambarimasu!!

Taking Nihongo and kanji lessons in parallel to working on these, too! Nothing much, but it's a start.

I'm sort of multitasking these days, because there is a bunch of manga for other writers as well, and a submission due next week. -laughs- Managing my time as best as I can.

National Novel Writing Month. Annual writing competition that happens every November where writers are supposed to finish 50K words by the end of November. Artists also join in to do their own version of NaNoWriMo/NaNo

Lego-kun is right. NaNoMangO is the art equivalent of NaNoWriMo. Like WriMo, we have a quota to fill in before the month is up. While WriMo has 55k words in 30 days, we try to draw 30 pages in 30 days. It doesn't matter how many we do per day, as long as you complete it before or by the end of the month. ^^ But to be safe, a page per day. There are no prizes, it's a challenge. Quite popular. -laughs-

The picture is very pleasant overall but I've picked up on two things. Firstly, the guy's hand looks a bit unnatural as it is now, I think this is because the horizontal section of the palm is too big.(I hope that makes sense) Secondly, his right eye is too far from the the middle of his face so the spacing between the two eyes looks a little bit weird. I hope this helps you

Keep working hard! :santa:

Title: Re: K-Seki's Den
Post by: Demonfyre on January 21, 2014, 10:26:41 AM
Why do people keep doing this.

Anyway: Ears aren't aligned with the rest of the facial perspectives, and are also placed low on the face. Nose is really far down the face, and just looks unnatural. Also for whatever reason the way the neck has been drawn in gives this really stiff look to it. The way the hair is highlighted conflicts with the eye highlights. Apparently there are two strong sources of light, but the eyes only pick up one (and a lack of back lighting doesn't justify that missing highlight).

Otherwise fine, I think you could be more ambitious though.

Hello again! It's been a while.. I haven't come round to updating Devil's Glass because I had to halt it to prioritize the projects that I've been picked up to do. I've recently started work as a mangaka (if, by three weeks, you'd call it recent) -- specifically, OEL-- two formatted in left to right format (as of last week), and a doujinshi formatted in right to left (the earlier mentioned) tentatively set for translation. For the meantime, here's something I've been doing.

Drafts. Meeting. Drafts. Meeting. Approval. Finalization. This is quite a tedious process. Came up with a managing timetable to help me balance work for three projects. A straight-up mangaka for a shoten has a more merciless schedule than this. Thank God I can still afford to shave some time off Drafts for some fresh air.

Very nice WIP the french is not correct though x)

For "mon amis" it'd be "mon ami" if it's one person and "mon amie" if the person is a girl. If you're adressing more than one person it 'dbe "Mes amis" and "mes amies" if all of them are girls ^^
And for "a nuit" it doesn't mean anything in french x) if you want to tell "tonight" it'd be "ce soir". For "this night" it'd be "cette soirée" and for "the night" it'd be "le soir"
Hoped it help you ;)

Conclusion the french is a very difficult language to master 8D

Beautiful drawings K-seki! The first one is especially cool with the water.

The thumb on his left hand in the last pic doesn't look right though.

I'm going to have to fix that. It does look wonky. Thanks, Echo! OTL

Something new again!

Animation Practice #3 (http://youtu.be/1_3eGiT3iTs)

I wonder if this works. I made something that moves for a few seconds. I'll go for a longer one next time. OTL

This animation looks pretty good! The drawing itself looks really nice. Your shading and line work are pretty sharp. What did you use to create the animation effects?

I skipped over softening it before rendering so the lines are pretty defined. Haha. I cross edit over Photoshop, SAI, and Sony Vegas. I might have to use additional programs once I decide to do more complex (and longer) tests. ( > ____ < )

I found out they actually do that to their hair in Japan 0_0

How'd you do the kanji? (that is Kanji right?)

that is not Kanji. It is a random series of lines that are made to look something like Kanji.

Yes, those are ears. You have no idea how creative their sense of fashion gets over there. And like Gelmra said, the "kanji" are actually meaningless. :)) It's very painstaking to look and copy texts freehand.

Actually rough sketches do come in color.
Usually when deciding a palette so that you don't have to constantly adjust after lineart~
I like the first one better, but the second one could work I just think the colors should be changed up a bit. It seems a bit off balance, but either way they are both lovely!

Perhaps leaning to male audience but your drawings of boys are still really bishounen-ish so it still counts as leaning toward female audience  ;)

In my own point of view, as long as the females are decently clothed that's OK...I am not too fond of panties and emphasis on the breasts and butts...though I guess fan service requires them so it's a question of compromizing (LOL)

Compromising. Yes. I'm not the kind who would like to depend on ecchi elements. Luckily enough, the writers I'm working with are more inclined to shounen-shounen. Haha.

So cool :D
I have a question though, what sort of paper do you use/where do you get it from? I've been trying to ink stuff and the paper just dissolves :3

He's the kid's soon-to-be master. Later on disappeared from his life indefinitely.

There's the brand called Orange. I use both its A4-sized paper and the Vellum Board. It's neither too rough or too smooth, so it's something I preferred. They could hold ink as well, except particularly heavy inkwork.. unless you're using Vellum << this one, I use for manuscript paper substitution.

Here's an example of trad work done with ink and colored pencils on vellum board.

Orange, huh? I've not heard of them :D Time for some googling, I think.
Thanks :D

Very little nowadays. I only ever have the hours from after dinner to around midnight at max, since there's work during the day. I do have the weekends to my leisure though.

Anyway, I haven't updated in such a long time!

I'll just follow up with the mangaworks I've been working on lately. I'm kind of rushing so I can get two pieces out by September.

Recent stuff, and a few scribbles related to previous ones.

Some snapshots while inking the pages.

I've received questions asking what materials I used for inking; it's simply done with fineliners, a few brush pens and a black permanent marker. And nope. I don't do my stuff on actual manuscript paper, either. I have the digital formats on standby, which I use to edit the pages once I start toning and typesetting.

You don't need to have the tools everyone is raving about to match other artists. A fineliner is just as good as a pen nib/ dip pens. It's how compatible and comfortable you are with your materials that decide on the quality.

That.. and Dhampyr is about to go online! Yeeessss! (I'll be remastering the first issue done by the previous artist as an additional project.)

fantastic work! ive been wondering recently whether to work on my manga digitally or traditionally, but cant seem to get either working well.

that is true.
can i ask what (type and size of) paper do you use? ive found that tool-wise anything goes but dirt cheap paper tends to bleed unless you can draw the lines crazy-fast which is kind of stupid. i can't seem to find anything on the cheaper side though, do you have any suggestions?

It's been a long time, guys! I've been clearing galleries and moving my stuff to archives -- yearly springcleaning. Hahaha. Some images can't be seen in my posts because of this (and I'm lazy AF to repost), but I'll be sharing recent works here.

How's everyone?

It's fun to do a Redraw meme from time to time! About the manga, I drew the pages traditionally, then tone and typeset digitally. Thanks! :DDDD

I'm planning to do a webmanga/webtoon soon, too. Here's a little glimpse of it. (Yes, it'll be full color.)

Anger that lead to a broken pressure gauge stuck in the "clicked" mode.

Unbelievably, less than three hours. I usually take longer to do colored stuff. Hahahaha.
On to some other works. This one's for a raffle prize - honorable mentions get a sketchy, colored work.

Most of the digital arts were colored with Paint Tool SAI. The last one's background was done directly without drafts as a last-minute thought. Hahaha.

Following up Inktober with Day 5 done yesterday. I always stream the inking parts on these - and I've been doing that every day. Haha.

** Tbh, I'm not very happy with how each of these turned out. With free time being so short between sleep and work, these were pretty rushed, lacked detail and yes... poorly done. I'd gotten the characters' owners' approval to redo these scenarios properly or digitalize them into a collective artbook (for when I can work on then on my days off without having to hurry).

Not part of Inktober, this is the third character's concept for the manga commission. I sent this one in while still drawn in pencil.

Great colour work as always Kiseki. Just the hair alone is pretty impressive, but I notice the skin is not just a single shade. How long did it take to make this one?

irvin and quinx: Thank you very much! ^^

Nope. I mix several shades when I color. This one took me around three hours to get done.

Adapted a style to match a chorus battle's theme. This will be used on a set of Youtaite avatars. /Will also be singing, haha./ It isn't exactly Honeyworks in full, but it's good to have a bit of your touch still in there.

Aaaaand shifted drawing style again for a roleplay circle. I rarely use this style, since anime/manga is the usual kind work called for. I'm trying to give this part a little more attention. It would come in handy sometime.

Pardon my vile quote... but couldn't think off another response that would justify my reaction... well aside from almost choking on my food XD.. Well all jokes aside dude... i'll be so bold and say your artwork is borderline professional. It's really amazing.

Do you usually nail these kinds of sketches on the first try?

Not all of them. I tend to change my mind a lot through the sketching process. Do you get that, too? Having a concept at first, then you start debating with yourself that the whole picture might look better if you adjust a few things here and there. Hahaha. Sometimes, my final artwork differed from the original sketch.

New one. It's fan art this time. Drifters! 2B lead, mechanical pencil for sketch. Black ballpoint for inking. It's a bit tricky looking for a good ballpoint that leaves clean, manageable lines, with a less rigid tip.

** Enough sparkly, shoujo shiz attempts. Lmao. I don't hold a candle to the bishounen masters on my feed. I'll listen to the feedback and focus on shounen-seinen style. Ahahaha.

I know what you mean. :o That's neat!
My process ends up being more like...[while staring at the page trying to get the concept down - forget half of the details - has to change the picture anyway]

This new drawing is cool! Nice profile view and pose with the body XD I haven't watched Drifters. How is it?

It's promisingly awesome. I'm a sucker for shounen, and seeing as it's from Hellsing's creator, too. Ye~p my cup of tea. Haha.

Something I was drawing live last night! Character design. This particular one has many costumes, since he's a tightrope acrobat. He's not from any of my active projects, though.

Belated Merry Christmas, fellas! I had a new project proposed recently.
That means a strict timetable starting next year. Food on the table, plus moved to a new crib so--- extra expenses, lololol. -sweats- For now, here's another one for the WIP sketchbook; the finalized illustration of C1. Disclaimers included in the watermark. Did what I can to add that characteristic webtoon feel to him.

I'll be keeping my eye on you, I really like what you have here. Honestly, I've been browsing through the forums a bit, and I like what I've seen most everywhere I've been.
Of course, that is to say, at this rate, expect a paid commission from me!
I just hope you'll enjoy drawing it as much as I enjoy writing about it.

Basics of art, like the color wheel, perspectives-- yes, those are default classes from general ed. XD The rest? Nuh. Never a formal teacher. Most of it's trial and error. >_<

I'd have to update the first post soon, but for now---

I haven't gone full swing into VNs as of now, but I hope to when I get some free time.
I like drawing characters, but I take -an extreeeeeemely- long time to get them done these days--- work. OTL
I'm looking forward to when the load lightens. </3

For now, I'll post a few things. (PNG formats of some characters I've drawn before.) ^^
I'm always open for suggestions and feedback.

Roleplay characters for Atlas World (FB). 2015. I was on a spree back then, I would love to have the same drive when I get my hands on free time.

Made a few changes to the avatar from last night. I'm almost done with her, so I can work on the third avatar soon after. That, and sceneries.

Wow, man. Those turned out beautifully. You said they were commissions, right? I hope you make bank on those.
I have to. Bills. Hahaha.

Ah! So pretty! O: The poses and wings are great!

Thank you very much! I'm still working on my colors!

Almost done with the third and final avatar.

Still working on the colors you say? Jeez, man, the soft cell shading is done so well already. Then again, I guess artists see more of where they want to take their art than the viewers. Everything in this WIP looks very professional to me.

Being on several communities, it's very harsh on me to see just how much I pale in contrast to pro artists. Very often, that makes me feel pretty sad. That's why I try to catch up. ^^;

I finished the third sprite. Finally. Now moving on to backgrounds.

Nice. I should probably draw this meme at some point, but eh, that requires me to have a specific bag full of stuff and the only one next to me is my school bag so it's like "composition books" and "textbooks" and "laptop"...and that's not very interesting tbh.

Sleep-deprived body crash? Already happened to me twice this semester, sad to say.

On the plus side you're still producing art, meanwhile I have a commission that still needs inking, erasing, ink touch up, and coloring...and I am digging this pastel.

Oh man how did you do the clothing so well. Good stuff as always Kseki. Sorry to hear about the overwork - Hang in there and keep on making great stuff.

Man, I wish I could get into the commission scene. I need to level up a lot more for that though.

I had to readjust my schedule *again* just so I could keep the stress at the minimal. I'm getting by, though my health's been a bit fragile these days. ^^

Working on pages~ my linework could use a little more lightness, but that's coming from me. Maybe some shoujoness has rubbed off on me. Lol. This is a shounen manga.

You can see how my pencil drafts look when I have background deets included in a panel.

This is from the first pages of the manga project I'm on. I'll post other WIPs here as I go.

Laaaately, I've been pretty hung on Hamilton, so I'm working on something like an animatic, I guess? But I'm wondering if it's better if it's in full color to the song. Haha.

Such nice work! Is that manga set in 1776? What is it baout? Great!

It's an animatic, drawn in manga style. This is based after the broadway musical, Hamilton. Quite popularly made into many animatics by artists on Youtube, too. ^^ Their songs are in hiphop, even if it's American history.

Updating with a behind-the-scenes WIP of another manga page I'm inking atm!

Thank you, both of you. I will be finishing this soon enough. This was meant to be an entry for a webcomic series' promo art but as they already have an artist (was late in applying haha), it's fine. The creator liked it though and would like to keep in touch.

I will admit the eye distances are hiccups that occasionally appear on some of my work. It was more frequent before. :) Welp. Room for improvement.

For now, I'm rushing an entry for a splash screen thingy. I uploaded the old version a few posts back here. I'll be reposting this with the final WIP for comparison.

Improvement check aka Draw it again meme. This has a two-year gap. I took an RP character of mine, then redrew him with the current stuff I've learned.

The face shows imprevement for sure.

The clothing...I may actually like the 2015 version better

I do like his old color scheme. Haha. I'll try to incorporate it into his new version. :)
For now, here's some stuff I've been up to.

My old tablet retired a week ago, so I've been doing a heckload of trad work recently. (The other reason was because I have a manga contract in full effect, and trad is more convenient to do when I'm not busy at my office job.)

I finished this dude some time ago.

This one ought was finished just recently. Five more pages to do for the fight scenes I was commissioned.
Sorry. ^^; These aren't the full images. Atm, I'm still waiting for my new tablet. Haha.

Wow that mummy thing looks sick bro

How old was the tablet? Damn that sucks  :(

Does traditional take much longer? And how do you tone manga pages in traditional?

A little over 3 years. Not surprising, I've been using a Genius Mousepen. Haha.

Compared to digital, trad does take a longer process even if it was more convenient. For example, I'm able to finish a simple, inked page (no tones) in a day. Maybe even two - that is, if I don't have to go to my office job. I tone trad drawings digitally. We don't have a direct supplier of screentones, and those are expensive.

Thanks, man! Still improving! :D

Updates.
It's been a while, guys. Things are busy as always and work is piling up.
I'm managing between two manga from indie authors, and two webtoons - one of which is my personal work.
(The webtoons are tentatively launching sometime after the end of May and will be available to read on Tapas and Line Webtoons.)
Each of them have a separate pace, so there's still some room for a day off and good sleep.

Here's what's been going on. :)

I switched from a Genius Mousepen tablet to a Huion. It's awesome.
(I need to get a new monitor. Lmao.)

Here's an inked page from one of the manga I'm working on.

Aaaad a fanart of the characters from a Tapas comic I came across. BL/Yaoi tag warning. :)
Of course, I settled for a neutral pose. Haha. While I do like a dose of BL, I prefer to keep mature drawings off my public galleries.

**It's kind of funny that I read these, but I draw shounen. I haven't worked on a single BL project. Haha.

I think it's totally fair to not upload your more explicit works, especially here in this forums. Besides, your artwork has such tremendous value even without sexualizing it. Although...if you did ever have the want to share some of your "other" works, Ecchiworld is always open.

Man, though...I wonder what it's like to hold a full, inked page of your own creation. I usually can hardly get ten pages into storyboarding before work sticks a sword in me.

I'm late to reply, but yes. That was Simon (the poor cinnabun).
She (the creator) and I follow each other on Instagram.
That won't be the last time I'm making fanart, though.
I would make fanart of other webcomics that I happen to discover and like.

I'll consider posting NSFW at your suggested site. It's rare, though. Haha. Likely, it would be BL-Yaoi. Even rarer, ecchi. Haha.

I think every artist knows that feeling. I had that happen in an art class once in high school. The teacher looked horrified because it was a girl chained up, and I was like "NO, NO, I JUST HAVEN'T DRAWN THE CLOTHES YET". I never wound up doing it for that particular work because I left it as a sketch, but all the time with my mom: "Why are they naked?"——"Because I have to know what the body's doing so I know how the folds are going to work."

The one with the cape reminds me of the villain from Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. I think it's the hair, because he looks much nicer than...that atrocity, frankly.

I love how the blue sketches on white make a nicer contrast and it's easier on the eyes.

Man, am I glad I didn't push ahead with the mask! D: That'd be uncanny! By the wa~y. I have a new sketch I wanted to share, but it's shounen ai-ish...... not exactly yaoi. :/

Yes, I do draw stuff outside of shounen.
Monsters, semi-realism, shoujo/shounen ai, pure shoujo, cartoony, low-key mecha and kemono-style furries to name some.
/Also mentioned the -cough- mature sorts, too, but it's very rare./

Perhaps I should have drawn the other eye in. Hahaha.
My style's been deviating recently, so here's another one out of boredom. I've recently rescheduled since I'm temporarily going full-time as an artist (I won't be able to continue my foreign language studies with the office job). To be honest, I'm quite nervous, a little afraid and somewhat excited.

I am every bit tempted to remake his/her(?) abomination of a comic sometime. I wondering how it would look like if it were presented as how it really is: a fanmade crossover, not 'muh original character desuuu', and with a plot minus self-inserts. XD I feel that's going to trigger frage mode though.

I can read it :3 It sounds a bit off though. Is your customer japanese? Without knowing the context, I'd say you want to say this:

????????????????

????????????

In japanese, you typically leave out all personal pronouns if you can read it out of the context. Since there are only two people who talk to each other, you would leave out "anata", also the "amount" because you can read it out of the context. Hope it helps and doesn't make me sound too teacherish ^.^°

Translation is very difficult. I translated my manga into english and then had someone native read over it and he found many odd phrases. And I consider my written english not too bad...

Not at all. Eventually simplified to take off the 'anata' and switched the amount to 'scent'. In the very end, we ended up using passages from a preexisting reference he has for the text. Lol. AND after that, he requested the whole thing colored. =____= Sometimes you feel like throwing your clients out the window.  ;D

Made changes to my studio (?). Larger table, new mouse, keyboard and headphones. Still a little more to go before my dream rig is complete. :)

I have extreme distaste for commissioners who decide to change stuff when everything's near-completion. Compromises other work. :/ I give them to the count of three before booting their project. Sooner, when they start being assholes on top of being cheapskates.

Yeah, man. I don't even really have a studio. I just kinda have my room and a sorta desk.

SENSEI DRAWING MANGAAAAAAAAA

Waaaaaaah O____O

I always wonder how you manage to make those soft gradients. I paint manually so it never is this smooth. Is there a trick?

I usually work with Sai. It's hard to get a smooth gradient with my brush settings, but I got by with a little something I put together using these: marker, brush and water tools.
1. Set the base color.
2. Switch to brush tool and coat another color where the darker shade is.
3. Switch to marker. Blend the two colors where they meet into each other.
4. Choose a middling color and switch to the water tool. This is used to polish the blending.

My brushes have some settings in them - tweaked the default ones until I get the kinds I use.

I'm a fan of painterly styles like Shilin's or Yuumei's. Right now, I'm figuring out coloring from grayscale renders, too. All this time, my shading relies on mixing and blending colors close to each other. I'll experiment with lighting effects whenever I get some time. ^^; The one thing I'm having difficulty maintaining is using hard shading because I tend to backtrack to soft shading hahahaha.

I see what you mean, Mahlua, maybe this? The arm in the front looks a bit unnatural because the sleeve could weld into the other direction to show where it's going, also the other hands position would be incredibly uncomfortable (not impossible, but uncomfortable). The torso is nearly on side view at the upper part and with the left leg going forward the hips would twist just a little more so you would see less of the front and more of the buttocks; although it could just be the pants being loose around the waist since they are worn with suspensers. The left leg is a little short, could maybe even be a bit longer to match the right one.

On one hand: Yay there is something I can correct in your work! On the other hand: SORRY K-SEKI to comment on this after you're almost finished >.< I'd guess noone else will notice this though since it's an advanced level problem. But maybe it will be of some help for someone on MR sometime ...

I hate the comment when someone thinks that if you draw one style predominantly that you can't draw anything else, as if it's some kind of lesser skill. Honestly...

I'm impressed with how much work you got out while I was kind of half-away dealing with life things. I wish I had that kind of capacity to do things.

None. I drew this one out of an image that came out of thought. It's one of the little experiments I like to do. Haha.

Mostly because I had to rush to finish these avatars. Ahaha. It's a chorus battle, so we had a time limit. They can't animate when the art's lacking.  ;D

Recent avatar art + all the Youtaite drawn + song cover (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Vpthu3bqnF8&feature=youtu.be)

I find it difficult to tell styles apart country to country, there are so many different styles in Japan also. Is there something specific to point it out? Funny enough, I was told my style looks german LOL I don't even SEE a style in my works tbh.

True. The manhwa I happen to read are pretty badass in their own right (gravitating towards shounen stuff ahaha). I think there are a few korean art that I've gotten hooked on webtoons. :)

These days, The lines have become blurred between Japanese, Korean and Chinese styles. You can still somehow tell with some, but yeah. It's becoming challenging, it should be a game. XD

The quality on the webcomic looks fine (and above the standard of the webcomics people have tried to force me to read, that's for sure). I certainly respect the capacity to work on commissions and webcomics and all the other projects you have going on. Just this one summer session college course might be a little much, although it's certainly working better for me than having two summer courses as I did last session.

Keep on keeping on. You got this. It's not nice to be so down on yourself.

I think it's an absolutely ok quality for a comic - you always have to put work to time in balance, especially with comics. I started mine with too much work on the shading/toning part and decided to put less effort in on later pages because you just can't spend 2 days on one page. So where can we read your webcomic? :D

Thanks, guys. The thing about paneling for manga is that often uses the 3-Part division. On a single manga page, you can separate it into three fractions-- in any size, so long as you can use them for the kind of scenes you're aiming for. You can choose to further divide these into smaller panels. The panels you use depend on what is happening. This is going to take a good deal of explaining. XD Feel free to PM me, if you like. Haha.

New sketches. I'm going to put these under spoiler because they're quite large.

I don't own these guys. I'm sketching out some friends' characters from a revived roleplay forum.
As you can see, I used a different art style. ^^;

Art-related, I'm currently working with a mobile game company (from Shanghai) for their upcoming MMORTS game so it's going to be steep.

Lol thanks guys! I've been away for a while, but I'm just going to update a little bit about what's been going on. I've been getting my collabs to stabilize after getting my non-art work set up (training). Art-related, I'm currently working with a mobile game company (from Shanghai) for their upcoming MMORTS game so it's going to be steep.

Thanks, SJ!

I'm just going to spoiler a little character concept here again! As always, my sketches are messy. That won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Haha. How's everyone been?

Scribbles if ya may.

Knew it. XD I was asked to revise this particular piece a lot of times.

Is anyone doing Inktober this month? :)

Here are a few artworks I've got so far!
Side comment: Day 5 - freehanding messed this up. Haha. Day 4 - sloppy. Day 6 - Okaaaaay, now I feel sorry for pushing this guy's flexibility far above the norm. **Lesson: Be sure to be fully awake when drawing.

I added another challenge on top of the Inktober Prompt. Since I'm a Vocaloid and youtaite, I'll be basing my artwork after Vocaloid and utaite songs. ^^

Inktober Day 1 - Swift

I'll be chasing after these with Days 7 and 8 soon! ^^

completely forgot about inktober :P
lovely drawings as always
but the coloured vocaloid #2 one, his thumb seems oddly short :P
overall i think your hand poses need the most work (compared to everything else). while they are still good, they lack the accuracy that the rest of the drawing has.
love the pose and the flowing clothes in the #5 one

Feedback appreciated. I have the tendency to get lazy with hands - sometimes the fingers bend in two places, sometimes three. And yes, the length hiccups. Hahahaha. Thanks, suuper!

Thanks, Walter. This one got featured in some small communities I'm in. It's still a bit heavy-handed, but I'm glad!

Something recent--- and no, it's not anime styled for once. Haha. This is my partner's DnD character. The guys have started to play it recently, and invited me. It's terribly random and fun! At the moment, I'm playing around with grayscale coloring. :D Here's the comparison between non-grayscale (left) and grayscale (right).

H a p p y  (Extremely Belated) N e w  Y e a r!

It's been a while since I've visited this place, since I've been sorting out both corporate and art schedules.
I always do that, my spare time always shifts around like a bloody storm.

Thought I'd share a couple of old artwork here, starting with the oldest, from two years back.
I found this one on my archives and hadn't thought to post this until recently. Haha.

This one's from sometime last year.

Aaaaand this one's what I'm working on right now. ^^ I've been feeling a little pull towards semi-realism as of late, I'm trying to keep in touch with non-anime styles, too. It sort of sticks out from the rest of the stuff I've posted so far. Hahaha.

How's everybody been? Hope you guys had fun during the holidays!

Daaaaamn girl, slay me with that semi-realism. I hadn't been able to see how much you've grown so clearly before, and you were already good two years ago. It's phenomenal. You're pushing more with contrasts and color values/saturation now, from what I see (which, granted, I only learned how to use those terms because of Slam). Keep pressing! You totally got this.

Sorry to hear about the lack of scheduled free time. I'm about to be feeling that once this semester starts.

Sup?! I tried! Thanks! I'm working through these pieces for the year, but my art page has been pretty quiet these days. I am working on prints of fanworks though-- which is kind of rare, since I usually draw OCs.

Guess what show's on the illustration lineup!

Warning.... extremely large images.

Woah, it's been insaaaaaaane. I've been pretty flooded these days, especially with catching up on pending artwork. I'm working on a healthily-paced manga commission at the moment, but there is another regular serialization being deliberated on (they're choosing artists). Depending on how it's going to end, I might consider getting a fellow artist in the next neighborhood to come over and give me a hand. Then there's that webcomic adaptation of a book series, too... Haha. Euuuurgh.

I can't post manga deets and peeks here while we haven't gotten a volume out, but I can post other stuff I've been at lately. Here's from a character commission~!

Congrats on all the work! I know it probably doesn't feel great to be so swamped, but you're out there, living the dream. And for good reason, too. The character illustration you're working on looks pretty sick. Is that going to be fire coming around his feet and up to the blade?

Took a liiiiittle work. XD Spiky hair's troublesome!

U p d a t e s

A writer had approached me to create a series with a scheduled number of pages submitted a week, and had me assemble a team to help me work on it. This will be the first team I'll be working with, and I'm feeling a little anxious, seeing as time-restrained scheds are merciless --- even for Japanese manga artist teams. This one's a seinen manga.

Consequently, there's another shounen manga series incoming, too, aimed for online webmanga. I guess now would be a perfect time to look into last will and testaments.

A little peek into an artbook illustration. One of many in a planned collection. Also a separate project.

Yeah regular updates are really hard to work with only suggestion i can tell you if you have a team try to make sure they really are productive and try to have many pages in avance before beginning its publication otherwise if any of the team member dont do his work youll hardly be able to respect your schedule. I used to work in a team and one of our teammate Found a better offer it literally killed the project. :( Hope you have a good team im sure you can Do it.

Yep. Agreed. It's why I chose teammates who are looking for work and are also flexible, art-wise (we all live in the same city so we'll be able to meet up to discuss). I'm just hoping we'd be able to work together well. We each have different styles, but they've got some experience already so I'll put my faith on their skills that way.

Anyway-- putting up the latest WIP of that artbook illust. ^^

It's pretty fun to experiment with other stuff once in a while. The recent one I did, was the first I drew something mecha for the commish. ^^ Likewise with kemono/furry.

Something I'm working on for an event coming in two months' time. I have to scrape together prints, keychains and postcard/bookies for merch. I plan to do anime and semi realistic styles on them for variety.

Sure will, suuper! It's a gamers' event, but artists are invited to sell their works. Cosplays, too! Kind of like a small-scale con in our city.
Loool. I'm trying to get a hold of grayscaling. Might help quite a bit when I'm working on semirealistic stuff.

wow great bright artworks!
I hope you sell the prints because they are really good :)
the manga page looks fab, although the speech bubbles look strange without a black outline. is that a popular thing nowadays?
and regarding speech bubbles again, just a preference, but I like it when the tiny pointy triangle thing is curvy rather than straight. I think thats a Japanese vs. American thing though maybe.

I think maybe the Bakugou one is too mild? I can't imagine him making such a peaceful calm expression! Those are some thin sketch lines.

The manga is a loose sample, so the balloons aren't outlined. ^^ The small, pointy tails on them are a preference: the large, swishy tails are a bit bulky for me haha.

I agree that Kacchan looks pretty mild, too! Lol. I guess he's more like a perpetual wrong-side-of-the-bed person in the mornings. :D

Post-event update: I sold out all my prints and Jobclass (Gamer, Cosplayer, Artist) pins on both days. ^^

Here are the other ones that went out on the table:

now THAT'S what we want to hear!!
well done :P

I like your hair style (drawings, not yours!) lately. its a bit more stylised than previously, so it feels very mangaish, but still lovely depth and detail :)

Great to hear that you sold out. I assume that means you got a good profit for the con? I'm proud of you! Hopefully this means more cons and more sold out signs in the future for you!

Hi, guys! Woot. It's been so long since I last put something on here. There's another event coming this weekend. Even though I won't be running a booth until next year, I'm there for two things: one, to deliver commissions from people who'd taken my card and contact details from last con, and two - it's for the karaoke contest. (Defending the two-time streak maybe?) Haha.

That aside, here's one of the artworks requested on short notice - it's for a friend who's running a mini-event Splatoon showdown there. ^^; He needed time to promote, so this was put on prio.

One down, three commissions to go.

Good to see your works again Seki!
Neat as always. I love how you do the shading, like how it's softened in certain parts.

TK, I like the style you have. You use sai for your work?

Yes, I do. :) And thank you, Noir.

wow great bright artworks!

Love ya last commission ( good luck with the rest!) but loving these works in particular, would like to see more of this style/look for sure

nice splatoon one, it's different style to what you've produced recently and I think it looks more complete than your normal works? maybe because its less of a sketchy style and more blocky. looks great regardless.
(everyone here seems to be doing different styles lately)

I will try to put out more works in that style. It seems people have a fondness for it, but it takes longer to finish over lined art. ^^ Thanks, dude.

It's pretty fun to switch up styles. Keeps your galleries from going stale, haha. I change styles depending on what commissioners are looking for or what genre I'm working with.

Usually, I'm stuck doing shounen work, but I had a different request recently - and it was a shoujo piece. Since it was a gift for someone, I took extra care when it came to using refs so I can grab a resemblance to the characters my commissioner had in mind.

Here's how it looks now, minus the sweet message attached to it on print. (This version is for gallery purposes.)
