Title: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on April 10, 2013, 07:09:04 PM
So these are some of my drawings. I will be posting more.
Some are older. They're mostly from my story.
And I have a habit of marking each character's name with the finishing date.

I'd like your honest critique and comments.
Thanks. ^_^

Team Adsoku Sierra. Consists of Akoshi, Kekuri, Itashi, and Yunako Adsoku, their Siloete aide Keltalyn, and canine assist Eskarou.

Other children from the Adsoku family. 'Cept each are in different operations.
From the left: Nirwu (Artic Operations)
Kaina (Works in Marine Operations with sister Gayel)
Kamina (middle) Siloete for all girls
                       Cysel (More in Dockyard Operations)
Gayel (Naval Operations) Original name was Naura.

Arisan Akalos

Not from story. More of a random drawing.
But it's called Team Clash

The story consists of Four Clans: The Nanrot, Coroyal, Acor, and Xohawen, from oldest to youngest.
Within the Acor (The clan most focused on) there are for families: Tiuruh, Nioni, Hakara, and Adsoku.
The main character is part of the Tiuruh Family, although he is not an Acor. He's a Nanrot, which is part of the story. (And I can't draw him)

I like them all. The middle kid in the first one looks real determined to grab the lady behind him...jk. Seriously tho, I think they all look pretty good. There are only minor tweaks that could be made like two of the character's heads are slightly too big. Do you write as well?

Post by: 50 Words for Paipis on April 10, 2013, 07:30:39 PM
This is all good stuff. Not much criticism I can offer. They all seem to be wearing mild expressions, which could be attributed to their character, but you might want to try for some variety. Maybe you could draw the characters with a few more exaggerated expressions.

@lasthope2300 Wait which middle kid O_O.  Yunako? (She's a girl XD) And yeah, I have to work on proportions. Yes I write, and mostly sci-fi.

@Paipis Panella Thanks XD. Hmm, yes most of them are rather dull looking. Partly due to their history in the story. But I haven't worked much on it as well. Should though...

Here's more:

Sisters from the Nioni Family.
Ceri is equipped with the chain and ball.
Karana wields knives.
Kandra is the Nioni doctor/healer figure.
Casara is a sniper. (But I don't know what model she has, haven't considered...)

Well, all the characters that start with 'N' (I seem to like that letter ^_^)
How do I do this...
(Bottom Row-left to right):Nirwu Adsoku(headset),  Navran Tiuruh(Bag and hair accessories),  Nameni(Teddy)
              Nigcht Nioni,   Nikola Dennart(Coroyal),   Nenuka(Goggles)
(Middle sections-left to right): Nakaja(braided hair over shoulder),   Naruka Tiuruh(Centre),   Nillan Nioni,
              Naoki Hakara(Visor as headband)
(Back Row-left to right): Naura(Gayel, but previous name was Naura, and wanted to fill space)
Nuyori Hashiue(Is a Tiuruh but she got married XD),   Naisgh Nioni,   Nakari Hakara.

I don't think you'll be able to pronouce some of them XD

Re-draw of a bunch of random characters done a few years back.
All re-done drastically different from primary drawings...which are not worth looking at anymore.

Please tell me what you think.
I need more motivation to draw more.

@lasthope2300 ichigo...with straight hair...ahaha, I see, I've never watched Bleach.

@P4 'make up for it in a way with the pose of the body'- I never noticed that. I'm usually trying to improve and poses and faces altogether so I don't have to catch up on a lot. Thanks for pointing that out.

Nikola or Nikki, is usually nervous, even around friends. She gets intimidated by the boss at the base she's apart of, being a Coroyal, which is the second oldest clan in my story and one of the despised ones as well. But her friends, like Naoki, the girl standing behind her, don't know that. They're Acori, who would naturally shun Coroyal cause of a certain incident that is one of the starting points in my story.

The Coroyal operate at their base, the Layoroc.

This one is actually an older one.
At the Bottom form the left we have: Nenuka Adsoku,  Tarel Nioni, and Ettilis Hakara.
-The girl and the boy in a half-mask: Lidani and Dakare Tiuruh.
-And the two twins in the back are: Kon and Kei Adsoku.

pretty good. The boy in the middle's arms are too skinny and too short but this is older so you've probably gotten much better with proportions.

Hm, yes, that was September last year.
This one is a little more recent. Another group, just siblings this time again.
But they work together, like the Jan. 28/13 group (First post, they're family too), in a shadow division known as the Shades. They're just one group in a dozen.

Also a second try on glasses. What do you think?

Great! The girl at the bottom reminds me of colonel mustangs lieutenant in fullmetal alchemist. I think your character would look more interesting if you usd more varieties of facial expressions. Thats the only criticism i have for you right now.

Ah, right. Well, I'm working on a drawing right now to try to improve that XD.
Meanwhile I'll just post these.

This one's ancient, I can't even find the date...
Some of the characters I revised.

There's that old man doing a wave. He was also in the March 29/13 Pic.
Ceri Nioni is here as well. Little animated girl talking to-
Naruka Tiuruh with the leafy stick up in her hair.
Her sister Karana (old style) is walking by, while behind her-
Is a Noturn Wolf, that's startling-
Nigcht Nioni.
And in the back just two other boys Nanik and someone else. With the wolf pup standing by them.

Eh, with the bland expressions again. A little newer.
These were drawn on a letter to my friend. Characters of the story I just finished (Hence the 'End')
Wonder if I should show you that one too...

Apparently, I can't draw, whenever I want to nor how I'd like it to turn out.
So I haven't drawn anything much new worth posting.

Other than that, and the expressions - what do you think about the overall anatomy? I know I stilll have to work on hands.
Or clothing? Variety of costumes?
Title: Re: Art of Echo
Post by: Mashiry on April 23, 2013, 05:39:53 PM
Work on those hands, is all I have to say, your anatomy's fine, you should try drawing different characters like a busty (http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/4795/flamehazemargery1.jpg) or a buff guy (http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/2643/alexlouisarmstrongflexerm6.jpg)

Thanks guys! Any encouragement and guidance helps.
Kay I wasn't able to spew alot. But I'm drawing, at least, working on it.
Busty...buff...kay, I'm up to trying. Variety is good. Do my characters seem all rather long? Before they all looked the same, I've been told, but won't be be showing those...really old. Bit of all, animal and people, hope to post more soon. Though expression wise, I couldn't do much. May I should just fill a page with those and hands, for practice.

Okay, new drawing, finished today.
I haven't got to do those two (Bust and buff), still planning poses and need more refs.

Ksori Adsoku and Xalu Hakara are from my story.
The others are just visualized.

Ah...I'm straining my eyes to look at it.
Black and white...I haven't tried to colour my pictures yet...

Thoughts?

@P4 Heh Thanks. Yes, I have trouble for solo drawings. And it looks lonely with one person XD.
No reson really, just easier for me to picture everything and not waste paper Eheh.

Actually, Ksori and Xalu were supposed to have swords as well.
But Positioning the hands just made me wear the paper down with the eraser.

-I don't know what the thing Ksori has is called, just some sharp half dagger weapon...
-The boy in the lower right corner was originally only doin the peace, but since everyone else had a weapon, I stuck the claws on him.
-Eye-shaded girl at the back it from a sketch I did before, she's a shadow, so she can manipulate a cold black matter. And shadow fight at close quarters, so I gave her the short sword.
-Xalu now is at martial arts. Her clothing before was a blue-white striped shirt under a short sleeve jean jacket. But I didn't do the sword for her, hence the pose...
-And girl at front...original visualization had the sword on her back, but I don't know how that works, so it's in her hand. Her hair is a mauve-ish colour...

Oh, that's for the newest pic.

Maybe I could redraw them in action?
(Maybe I should draw in action then colour? XD)

Teronia Atheras, part of the Phantom organization, more commonly known as Tero.
(Tero: I'm not carrying the mask because I'm a Phantom!)
Age: Not really known, between 10 to 20 years.
Does multiple jobs and stuff around the base: Cafeteria manager, Flight Squadron Leader, and announcer on their private radio station, which is her favourite past time, as well as anything else the boss asks her.
(Tero: by the way, what's up with my ponytail?!)

Vrega Tiuruh (Sometimes called Vreg)
Age: 16
Profession: Co-announcer with Teronia on the radio station;  Gathering info for the bases in my story.
(Vrega: Well, I wouldn't call it a profession, I'm not paid you know.)
Other: Due to a past event, her left eye was disabled and replaced with a digital retina used primarily in
gathering information as it can transmit images.
(Vrega: Tero, you look fine - who agrees?)

And...a trial of sorts, not finished as you can see, I'm not sure how to without wearing the paper excessively...
Tell me what you think anyway, please.

Practice sheet with my fav four OCs, two faces each.
Naoki Hakara
Age: 16
- Calm, cold, and mostly serious.
Other: during missions she wears the Hakara visor, a family heirloom, but usually it sits on her like a head
   accessory.

Nigcht Nioni
Age: 14-16 (Not sure)
-Carefree, and I imagine her with an evil air, although she is completely on the good side of things.
Other: Former assasin Wodan, but doesn't like to relate to those shadows.

Nenuka Adsoku
Age:15-16
- Usually seems to be ticked off, conflicting with Naoki and Nigcht most of the time.
Other: In work, wears motocycle goggles (um, I just draw goggles) and ties her hair over her (usually) right
   shoulder.

Nikola Dennart
Age: 15
- Shy and nervous, I mentioned before, clings to the other three as part of her espionaging.

Naoki, Nigcht, and Nenuka are grouped up during missions when the bases have to collaorate.
Nikola joins them when they're off duty.

Pose practice I traced off one of my scrap papers.
I plan to colour her after I decide on colour scheme since her hair is meant to be a purplish tone.
Or if you could offer some colour suggestions that'd be helpful. Before that, I'm wondering if she looks okay in terms of pose...

@lasthope2300 Yes!

@Jamieboy113 It was tucked >>> in the back...I don't draw often enough to keep it in view. It's once in a while I do draw something I appreciate myself.

Thinking for the girl either a purple-hair with white-blouse purple-stripe scheme, or a green-hair gray-blouse yellow-stripe scheme, or maybe a blue-hair scheme, hmmm...

Right, meant to put this up yesterday, but the computer was down due to electrical troubles with sparking plugs (Copper plug outlet clashing with aluminium wiring or something like that, which could cause a fire if it got hot enough, and causing all power sources on the same fuse to fluctuate).

Anyway,

Achem - ARTIST SURGE.
Drew this partially from an ace attorney ref.

My main characters were the only ones I couldn't draw...or so I thought.
Here is Kiaut Coroyal, one of the main characters, residing with the Acor in the Tiuruch family.
Age: 17-18 (Not sure)
Physique: Tall, slim.
Other- Blond hair, blue eyes. In my story, she is almost always seen wearing a jean jacket and pants outfit.
She is easily excited, and high-strung, especially whenever she encounters any form of her cousin Rogen
Coroyal, who exiled her himself from the Coroyal Clan.

And as an extra, her name is a tongue blunder. Can't really tell from the spelling how to say it..so..
It's (Key-ah-oot) said really fast  ;) (well, not too fast)

I think there's a few proportion problems..
Anyway, enjoy !

Hey Echo!
I'm really liking your art! Your most recent drawing of Kiaut looks super crisp and clean! I love her defiant/mischievous expression!
I'd like to suggest that you take a look at her hips/legs again. Her character type is tall/slim, but her hips are too small, and her legs look too short.
You probably already know what I am about to explain, but please be patient with me! You have probably heard about counting heads to measure how tall your person should be. Kiaut should be 7 or more heads tall.
Here is a rough example to show what I mean:
The above drawing was found Here (http://www.summerreadingclub.org.au/2011/12/how-to-draw-manga-vlog-1/).

In your drawing of Kiaut, it looks like she is less than 6 heads tall. You might have been thrown off by her slim waist, which kept her legs from getting started in the right place. You might have run out of drawing room on the paper, and accidentally made her legs too short. Either way, I hope to call your attention to it, so you will be able to catch it in the future! Also, this might sound a little weird, but Kiaut is 17, or 18! Don't be afraid to fill out her hips a little. It might be a good rule to keep the chest size, and the hip size the same, so she looks balanced. I hope this helps you in the future!  You have good personality to your characters, and your clothing designs are good! I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your work! Keep it up!
BTW, Do you want people to pronounce her name like the word "Cute" ?
Title: Re: Echo Archives

Wow, there are a lot of talented artists (includng yourself) in these forums, which really surprised me!

Some of this stuff looks similar to things I see in manga, and the details to your work are remarkable, like just lines that make it all the more realistic, such as clothing not being entirely straight, and such beautiful eyes. I have a sort of fetish for beautiful eyes, even in real life...

I bet I could talk all day coming up with compliments on your work. ^^

FlossAndChaos - Arigatou Gozaimasu! Actually I haven't heard about counting head, that is really useful, I'll
be extra sure to keep that in mind. (It's been a problem in most of my pics I find now).
The waist did throw me off. Though I was following the reference, I wasn't sure if I should make it just like it:
   http://www.gamesfoda.net/wp-content/gallery/dual-destinies/athena_cykes.jpg
I thought Ki's head was just too big.

BTW, Do you want people to pronounce her name like the word "Cute" ?

Ahah, no, that's saying it too fast. Just a normal promounced Ki-a-ut, with the accent on the 'ki'. (I wouldn't describe her a 'cute' anyway XD more like cutting).

WatcherOfSky- Thank you! Don't push the compliments too much though (I've still a long way to go) XD.

Good on you! Using a reference! That is fantastic! I would encourage you to continue to use reference pictures!
As for the reference picture you used of Athena, I can see why it threw you off. Athena's picture looks good, but her anatomy isn't what I would call perfect. There has been a tendency in many anime/manga illustrations to elongate the stomach and hip area. Athena has this problem, which makes her legs start much lower that they should. I notice that Athena's  right forearm is a little too long as well. Her hand is almost level with her knee! >.<
Anyway, keep up the good work! I'll be looking forward to your new sketches!

Thanks  :D I think the expressions mostly reflect myself usually. Whenever I draw a specific expression, I find my face screwed up in the way I'm imagining them. (Then by the end of the day my face aches XD)

FlossAndChaos- I see. Guess I'll have to scrutinize every picture before drawing eh?

Working on a new project. I find I have problems positioning the body and neck after I draw the head.

By the way, I don't want to be a nuisance, but would you be interested in competing as an artist for the "King of Raiders" contest on this site?

Quote
The King of Raiders is a contest on this very site in which artists and writers attempt to create sizable one-shots (45-65 pages) in an allotted time slot. Participants can go solo or collaborate. Collaboration is decided by a lotto in which writers who have finished their scripts by a deadline (already passed) are paired randomly with registered artists. Currently, we have three writers who have worked hard to finish their scripts, but only two artists. We cannot continue with the lotto until we have one more artist. Registration is free and the deadline for the product is March 30, 2014 (extended due to the World Wide Jump Contest).

We need one more artist for the lotto which will pair artists and writers for collaboration. You'd be competing as an artist against the likes of FlossAndChaos, Aldrich Crescent, Roshon21, Nairbons, Jamieboy113, and Kyuryu-kun. Three of those artists have chosen to go solo, and one of them, Roshon21, is collaborating with his cousin, Takahashi. We have three writers (me, legomaestro, and Hikari) but only two artists in the lotto. Would you be interested in being the third artist? We don't want to keep the artists waiting, but we don't want to involve you in something you're not interested in.

Hey Paipis,
Sure I'm interested XD. But I just don't want to disappoint the writer cause I'm really clueless about how to make a manga. But I think this is a good opportunity for me to learn something new as well as revive my competitive spirit (Hehe *Smirk*). So sure, I'll join.

(Note: Read your post yesterday and had a heart attack. [jk]. Then had to calm down from fretting over something I hadn't started yet XD. Decided to sleep on it. [Ended up dreaming on it too] But I got positive feedback on it from some friends, so there's no turning back.)

I don't think any of the writers will be disappointed. There are some tutorials here on several subjects, and I'm sure there are people who can answer your questions. A lot of competitors were and are nervous about it, but I think it will be a valuable enough experience that, even if each of us creates something horrible, we'll all learn more about how to create something amazing. I'll notify Kage, and we'll get the lotto started right away. You're free, however, to start whenever you please (as long as it's after the lotto).

Paipis - Great !

Should never rush my drawings ehehe.
Little girls pic XD.

Here we have one of my favourite kids in the centre spotlight-

Nameni Foxtayl (Always keep changing her hair >_>)
Age: 7 (Or so)
Physique: Short and small (Than the average 7 year-old-er)
Other: Orange brownish hair always kept in two ponytails. I see her in black shortalls with a red sweater
beneath. Not a major character, more like a comic relief, always pestering her "Ronny" (Main character).
Just plain impish and mischievious. History goes that she's from the Nanrot clan, but no one's supposed to
know that, uh, (So don't go telling anyone! XD).

On the Left there's (In a rare happy mood, I don't usually picture her as happy) :

Ettilis Hakara
Age:7-8 (like Nam)
Other: A mild reserved kid that often is in charge of transferring files by analog means, eh, by foot carrying
a huge file case. Black hair kept in a flatish ponytail while bangs get in her face. Her older sister had turned
against the Acor and works for the Wodan as a, well, centurion, you could say, having command over
shadows instead of soldiers (Difference being you don't have to pay them and you can always summon
more when others get wiped out).
Clothing is basically an acori vest (But has to be pulled over the head) that's probably green, with a
T-shirt and beige pants. Ettilis wears iron-tipped boots (Very common among the Acor).
Name: It's not Et-tea-liss. More like Eh-teh-liss.

And last on the rightmost (The only figure at the right)-

Dakei Adsoku (Called "Kei" cause the Da is just...Dah)
Age:8-9 (Little older than the other two anyway.)
Other: Small girl with black hair. She has a twin brother (Da "Kon") and both of them are mainly Infiltrators
(just heading into targeted bases first to open a way in) and their key tool is a grappler (Sticks on the belt
type device attached by a strong wire). Usually as mild as Ettilis, but more emotional around her brother.

Whew, Yes hands need major attention, and I've been told their bodies are too small (Or maybe the head's too big). And the eyes...the eyes...ooph.

What do you think?

Your art is gorgeous, Echo-sama. However, if I may offer some advice, you've got a great style going, but it's a waste of beautiful talent if you don't try to draw some new facial shapes. If you want, I could show you what I mean. But you repeat the same eyes, mouth and shape over and over and it may leave people confused with who your characters are. Your artwork is beautiful though. <3 Lovely pencil work! Love the shading too. Nice attention to detail.

*Austa hits an honest bull's-eye*
That's a certain error I find myself making all the time. It was worse before, but I guess I haven't left the bad habit behind XD. Other face structures ('specially when it comes to boys) make me cringe when I have to change the eyes as well.

Alright, time to make a change! (somehow, na?)
Though they're all from the same clan so...I guess it's a bit of a cheat to have them similar ehehe.

Hm, I wish you had Skype. I could show you sample face shapes to experiment with. All it takes is some experimentation. Try drawing random circles. Random eyes shapes.

As for applying it to characters, think about the type of character your character is. Are they soft and round, sharp and evil, strange and bubbly? That always helps me. I wish I had an example for you, but I don't. Maybe over PM, I can give you a better explanation without taking too much space.

Here: http://browse.deviantart.com/art/Unique-Features-Tutorial-Pt-2-154756158 This helped me so much. And she's got another tutorial for body shapes and men's faces. Remember, while you may draw anime, you have your own unique style and you can adapt anything or leave anything you want.

(Lazy) drawing today of my OC Main Character Rountu Tiuruh with Noturn who's supposed to be completely BLACK (come eat me picture). Plus does he look right beside Ron or close up front?

Ron's really from the Nanrot clan, so he's a shadow user. I ended up drawing his head right at the edge of the paper 'cause I wasn't sure how near I wanted Noturn to be.

Oh you got some great skill in drawing! The last one is impressive, animals are hard but you did quite well. I would look into the composition a bit. The human character, i would have placed him a bit lower. Since now perspective wise, the legs of the animal don't really make a lot of sense; they would be below the ground level. Also, is the human running or walking? In that case you might try to make him lean a bit more forward, to add some more dynamics in the pose. (diagonal lines give a sense of movement while straight lines give a sense of rest.)

They look like a really great couple though, awesome work! :D
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on August 08, 2013, 03:23:08 PM
Thanks Callesthe!
And no, Ron's not running. It's just a pose. He was supposed to to BE running, but Noturn's head was blocking the way so I was uncertain about leg position. Arms were different before too.
Animal would've been running too. Legs are actually a weak point for me in animals.

Rushing the dust off this file momentarily. I feel I haven't been doing enough of these...
Still have anatomical problems plus hands with shading to a minimum. Reverting back to square one?  :(

So this is a drastic makeover of some characters I drew 4 or so years ago for a made-up magazine a friend and I used to work on. In fact, they may not be the same characters anymore and looking back, the story they were in was rather childish.

But I remember how much fun I had in any old picture. Somehow it doesn't seem to be nowadays.

I really really like your art ^^ though the girl on the right. Her arm there is none o.o and i ended up staring it it for far too long contemplating whether or not she only has one arm. But I don't know anything about art so ^^ either way good work. The shirt on the same girl to the right stood out to me the most out of everything in the image and after that I liked the way you did the hair ^^

your art is good. but concentrate on how the clothes attach itself on the body. the ends of that top the girl on the right is wearing are unnaturally apart near the bottom and their really closely attached near the top.
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Demonfyre on October 27, 2013, 06:59:18 AM
I would take a look at face perspectives, since the eyes are usually non indicative of the angle you are trying to convey. Sometimes the nose and mouth are out of the facial center line, so pay close attention to that and lay out appropriate guidelines if it helps you to solve the problem. The problem with these mistakes is that it will make your faces look flat and will be hard to relate with, and in a style such as manga/anime that could become troublesome for you as the artist.

@Lego Thanks. I hope I did improve.

@archangel I've more to come hopefully soon. ;)

@emocookie    Aha, you're right there are no arms  It's my mistake  :D Hm, her shirt is three layers of clothing, actually, haha. A short-sleeve turtle neck, a vest, and a...nother vest? Impractical, but fun to draw. Thanks.

@Lorenx Thanks for the pointer. It does look unnatural.

@Demonfyre Hard to relate with huh? I never considered that, trying to focus more on eye position and style.

Nenuka Adsoku, on the left
Naoki Hakara, on the right.

The only thing I see to point out is... Well, something about her right arm seems slightly unnatural to me. Like, she's holding it unnaturally far from her body?
Haha I don't know how to explain.

@Demon Will do. Thank you for the pointer.

@Ginger Uh, it was supposed to be tights  I'm seeing a lot more around here. The sleeve thing was supposed to be different due to perspective, but perhaps it is a bit short.

@Churro Thanks! I getcha. That arm gave me a problem on position. I would've had it holding onto the bag, closer then, but it was awkward...which means more practice  ;)

Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on January 24, 2014, 07:47:36 PM
New Pic. This one was a little awkward. It's what I got from trying to draw the same guy over twice. I started working on it around the same time as Jazzy, so some things are just...off.

Kinan and Quissis.

Or Quissis and Kinan. Quissis was drawn a little better than Ki, so I stuck him on top. Quissis is a bad guy in my new story idea that came around when I was thinking "what would happen to my story if everything were turned upside down?". Meaning, what if all the good characters turned bad and the protagonist wasn't king of the spotlight anymore?

Kinan is a 'good guy' in the original story, focused on rebuilding a broken clan structure. Converted to the other idea, he became a dark figure bent on destroying worlds for the sake of revenge, Quissis.

I think I like Quissis better though. He looks...cooler.

Aye, I agree with the hair, although I can tell they're different from up close, it might not be so obvious at a glance which could confuse characters. But then again the male anime hairstyle never has been too creative...

See what I mean? So it's really a fault of the genre.
I think that's why artists focus on different visual aspects of males such as eyes, height, clothing, expression and scars to distinguish them whilst with females it's easier to do with hair alone.

Post by: Echo_River on July 25, 2014, 12:53:11 PM
@Ginger. Eh, I've seen that template before. Ooh. It looks different up close. Thanks!
I do try to differentiate hairstyles sometimes, but the only hair styles I usually see are my dad's and brothers'...

Now, I've put off drawing long enough.
I think I might get worse if this keeps up.

Here are some character designs for some of my story ideas.
First is Snow Drift. Drawn from left to right are.

  Jin Ikeda                        Userugachi                             Beryl
(http://s25.postimg.org/i1gsre6tb/Snowdrift3.jpg)

Second is Card Game.

 Thanks!

@Ginger *cough cough* Useru *Cough* is supposed to be wearing a wolf ear hood, not that you can tell. Wan! wan! But thanks!

Btw, when I was thinking of Red Fury, I ended up changing the them from revenge to survival and put Reus in the place of Rook, so you can say Card Game is...my version of Red Fury, ahaha...

Ohh, there is some good shading you've got going on there! I also like how different the characters are, they stand out quite well :D when you draw them, do you give them a specific height or just simply draw one taller than the other?
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on July 29, 2014, 10:48:06 AM
Thanks Ginger!
They do have specific heights. Anri is taller than the other two, and Maiko is the shortest.
Although I goofed a little on their head sizes...

Post by: Echo_River on July 29, 2014, 12:08:59 PM
@Vio Thanks. I was thinking of changing the title though. Doesn't quite match up with the story line. I think.

@Lego Thank you. It was an idea for our collaboration, but we're not working on it:

Spoiler
2. Project: Rubato

[The school of music is full of things both mellifluous and deformed. A pianist come to study composition, (Hime) soon finds the instruments in the music academy cursed and enchanting. It's an effect passed on by those passed away who had first owned the instruments and had a strong attachment to them. The fact disturbs her and her friends (Maiko) and (Anri), a flautist and violinist.
The effect shows strength when they play instruments whose owners' emotions clash with their own. Figuring the academy tampered, the girls investigate its origins, and find out the headmaster had cast a spell over the school grounds, raising the ghosts and their emotions in an attempt to produce the best music school.
Hime and her friends believe the spell should be removed to release the restless ghosts, also learning that the best come through their own hard efforts, and what makes music, music.]

@Vio Yes, basically. It's got a few flaws but that's the idea....basically.

@Lego My ideas somehow tend to get complex. It's just plot, character interaction, and genre elements...just...

Some practice drawings. Trying out different poses and the like. (They're slanted!!  :( )

You have a very good grasp on anatomy.
Really, the poses are well done and the hatching is good.
One thing I noticed is that your characters tend to look alike, ie they all have the same eyes, noses and mouths.

@DBNext Thank you for your input! I've been told before they look alike T_T I should practice different builds and face forms then to make it look more noticeable. Unless I'm doing something wrong.  :(

@Lego Hm, right? They look kind of tilted... Haha, thanks.

Line art has the most impact when everything connects or tapers off.
You can create an illusion of line weight by just simply thickening the corners of where the line meets.

Alright I need to update this thread.
I always feel like I taken a few steps backwards each time I start drawing after a not drawing for a while....

Here's new, recent, and redraw drawings:

Some of the Tiuruh Family Generation and their back up Siloete helper,

- Rayude Tiuruh and his sister Vixya
- Rauta Tiuruh and her brother Coyto
- Berch

These next characters are from another story of mine, which was based on a club that was made up in elementary school. The story itself wasn't finished, but I did write and finish a side story based around Valentines.

In part of the story they go to a party, and hence I tried drawing them in their party wear:

- Mirax Rougemar
- Sara Feretta
- Mina Fallward
- Crystal Aliston

Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: GingerStark on March 21, 2015, 05:15:50 PM
Hm hmm  :hmm: If I had to guess what these kind of characters are from appearance alone then...

Rayude: The typical male protagonist and feels as if he's the only sane one amongst his friends. "I'm surrounded by bakas" would be a common catchphrase  :glare: But deep down he loves his friends and considers them family.

Vixya: Confident and full of spirit. Though she yearns for adventure, she probably has a hidden passion for books. Definitely tries to drag Rayude along on her antics.

Rauta: Mature, reserved and tough on the outside. Acts like a mum to the group, and probably backs that up with her intimidating glares. Has a secret crush on Rayude.

Coyto: Small guy, looks up to everyone and wishes to be as great as them. Although introvert, he always tries to push himself to impress his friends.

Berch: Berch is just berch. A leaf in the wind, a ripple in the water. Aloof and strange, he is unfazed by what goes around him, but it gentle and sweet when approached.

I love the names, how do you get such awesome names for characters??? The art itself is good too, though Coyto and Rauta look rather similar to me... maybe try indulging in more unique male hairstyles.

The second picture is too faint for me to see XD
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on March 21, 2015, 05:28:49 PM
Sasuga, Ginger XD You didn't disappoint my expectations. You hardly read what I wrote, eh? XDDD

Those characters for their specific story never appear in the main cast and they're all cousins. At most they appear as support.
Nice try guessing at their personalities.

Their names are even strange to me. Just use your imagination if you want to make your own XD
Did you mean Rayude and Coyto's hairstyles?

Second picture too faint - *lends magnifying glass to Ginger*

How dare you. Do you know how rude that w- OH MY GOD A SQUIRREL!!!
*Ahem*

Support characters can be quite elaborate if you are going for a snowflake cast  Normally I just try naming my characters with google translate of things they represent.

*Uses magnifying glass*

Awwww, they're so small. Love the doggie! Wan wan!

Your female hairstyles are much better, definitely more stylised. Though that is anime in general, lots of unique female appearances, and pretty cliched male one  ::) The art style seems different. Or is it that they're just not shaded in?
Title: Re: Echo Archives

*shakes head in nostalgia* *shoots squirrel*

Can't do that, that's a rather bland way of doing things. You can't expect your child to grow up to his name O_O
Although for those character, I did base their names off canines (cause I love dogs) but that's as far as those go.

It's a .... wolf....
Your magnifying glass does not deceive though. That is my Ekodomo style!!! (Echo-domo...e-kodomo....)
JK. It's a failed attempt at doing chibi. They didn't get chibified enough, so they became kids

Boy hairstyles that I like are limited. Cause like....I'm a girl...
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: GingerStark on March 21, 2015, 05:46:36 PM
*Chokes on Mayonaisse*
There's a difference between naming your lifeblood and some fictional character O_O

A wolf?! I couldn't tell... Maybe I'm just used to direwolves, nah?
Ekodomo would be an awesome name though. Something that eskimoes would draw in their free time  :hmm: Or Vio.
It's cute though, good job

Maybe that too, but you rarely see much difference between male hairstyles. They don't go as long as females, so they're more restricted in styling (Unless you start giving them hairbands, ponytails, a few highlights, a flower...)
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on March 21, 2015, 05:50:11 PM
Fictional characters have parents too! XD

... Wut... - does eskimoes have to do with this? Kodomo = child, remember?.
E-kodomo - Echodomo - Ekodomo.  Echo's child character style o_O

Boys do have just as much variety in hairstyles as girls.
But its mostly personal preference for me when I draw boy characters.

I know that, but they don't name the characters in a sense, the author does!!! I mean, who the heck would call their kid Armin other than the guy who wrote Attack on Titan? Armin Arlert is a silly name

I don't study Japanese yet  Will be next year though

Hmm, maybe I'm not watching enough anime then  :noidea:

Yeaup, been a while since I've seen your stuff indeed. Great stuff as always Echo. Teach me how to art.

If you're feeling your old men look too much the same then try referencing I guess... Pinterest saves my life when it comes to finding reference. The black and white photographs are the best for that sort of thing. It's a popular tag and has tonnes of human references.

But your poses are getting better everyday, that's half the art right there O_O You just need to uniquely design and name each one now XD

Pinterest. Got it. I will investigate.

Thanks No1sey XD

Here's a drawing that should've been complete months ago along with the other Tiuruh Family Generation.
The two characters on the right side were drawn recently, so their style is slightly different from the other three.

- Ilayanne
- Fayux, originally Faux, Tiuruh, and his sister Feyor.
- Tawhioken Tiuruh and his sister Wiren.

Spoiler
(http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm196/JaysonHao13/Acor4MixB_zpsafyvsiav.jpg)

Character info:

Fayux and Feyor are in training emissaries.
Tawhioken and Wiren are sort of ambassadors, but under the stealth category.
And Ilayanne, well, she's supposed to be keeping tabs on them to make sure they're doing their jobs properly.

Character from the previous pose drawing I decided to draw again cause I fancied her design. Tricky from another angle.

Of course, I'm not sure what the angle is supposed to be in this image. From the top down with a bit of dislocated hip?

That's what I meant by proportions ._. I looked at that too. I thought it was either his arm was too long or his legs are too short?
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Vio on August 20, 2015, 06:03:27 PM
Really? You think his legs are too short? That's interesting because I though he had long legs. With only this image of him I would say his torso is short compared with his arms and legs. I say that because of where his belt is. :hmm:
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: DAWM on August 20, 2015, 06:05:15 PM
I would say that his legs are too short. If you block off the bottom half, the rest of his body look fine.
His pose is great though and the body, aside of leg length, looks very nice.
The girl is a bit skewed though, there's a slight slant to her that you don't see in the boy.

all that aside, very nice sketching!

This month I have attempted a rendition of another character that suddenly flashed into my mind one night.
I've decided she's from the same story as the other two are from the previous drawing.

Name: Carrie Legend
A (perhaps) sulky teenager that fusses over her job as a combatant. Being the daughter of one of the previous leaders for the O.L.K, Order of Liberation Knights, feels pressured to be some sort of leader herself. To prove to herself she can do it, she doesn't pull back her punches.

Your style is unique and you have the anatomy almost nailed down.
But I feel like your characters' faces all look the same.
Ever tried experimenting with wildly different hair styles? It really makes a difference. Also, try playing around with facial structure. For reference, I suggest looking at One Piece. Don't mind its style, but take a look at the way the author draws each character.
Keep it up!

Yes, I find even for myself the characters have same face structures... I will definitely look into that.
Hairstyles, while I like the wild ones, I find them difficult to draw unless they seem practical to me? But I'll try that. Thanks once again!

I don't know if you've noticed or not, but your drawings are missing black tones. You have a habit of stopping at mid-gray. I think your work will become a lot stronger if you push yourself to go darker
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: suuper-san on February 11, 2016, 01:27:42 PM
i agree with Ryan about shade (you could increase the contrast on the picture once you have it digitally as well), but what stood out to me the most was the alleyway looked incredibly thin at the entrance. i noticed the lines on the wall dont have a single vanishing point, so it looks a bit like an optical illusion.

the broken detail on the wall is really good, and you pick up the brick texture of the wall without having to draw every single brick which is great :P
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on February 17, 2016, 03:50:34 PM
@Hasith Phone cameras nowadays are amazing XD I don't usually colour my drawings. It would be nice to see it in colour though because the character's hair would be a light blue-green.

@Lego I know right... Back in the day when there weren't even scanners...

@Ryan Thank you for your advice. I'll try that.

@Suuper Thanks! I thought the wall perspective was a bit off. Would it be better to have a more perceptible vanishing point? For the wall lines, I tried to mimic that from the Karneval manga.

I'm sharing WIPs today.

Character of mine. Most of it will be coloured black. So I hope to make it dark... dark... dark....

if you are copying a style of someone elses, or it is your own style, then vanishing points or anything else common sense dont matter. but beware if you forsake the principles, even non-art people will start to notice problems, so its a double edged sword :P

i know what you mean about shaking hands lol. i was asked to draw last week at a party and my hands are like jazz hands while im trying to draw. i daresay thats not why your hands were shaking though :P

she looks like robin from OnePiece
but nicely done, has she got some sort of water/nature elemental thing going on at the feet and clothes?
the pose is really done well, and the folds of the clothes are nice too. its hard to draw a face at that angle but it looks perfect :P
i think though her hips are quite narrow, they dont get any larger from the waist down, but its not noticeable hardly, partly because of the looser clothes perhaps.

Shadow element, actually, as you'll see.
Yeah, the hips are too small actually, I tried to make it a bit better.

@Swearzy Hahaha, what is there to be afraid of from an older sister anyway? XD

I coloured(blackened) and shaded the picture. I don't feel entirely satisfied with it, but I did it how I meant to. The lighting wasn't that great when I took the picture. I might retake it tomorrow and re-post.

This was actually pretty challenging to colour. I tried to make it as black as possible... which lead to major led smudging! Had to be very careful not to rub my hand against any part of it, or the side of my hand would be coated with black, ahah.

Do you trace from your sketch to a new paper? Somehow that just looks really... clean  ;D love it!
I think that her face is a bit off somehow. Something about left side doesn't look right, but i can't really say why. If you feel like going through the trouble, you could try drawing centre line and double checking the position of her nose, mouth, eyes and chin.
Other than that, i think it's perfect  :D would be awesome to see her colored!

Finished the picture.... I think.

I like how it came out. The hand perspective didn't come out as I wanted. It's a little hard to see here because of the lighting (come back to me scanner! T_T).

And there are a few glaring contradictions in this one. One being her hair, which was supposed to be black. But the rest of her is black already....

And the other one is....

Sara Feretta
(http://s25.postimg.org/oajsb5q7z/Sara_Feretta.jpg)

...the arm on the left. I'd already finished colouring everything when I realized I'd left out the arm at the back...

when it comes to the design of character theres 2 can consider the body and the design
haha but you can focus on design rather than the body cause we were focusing on that hahaha

his cheeks are a little flat

the clothes is warm and ok its for cold weather am i right? haha add some details brotha there it will look better

his eyes are shining beautiful

he had a hair pin right?  if its on the front make it a little big but if its on the back dont show it

his short is cute also haha nce as said he likes cute things  :D

In the story I found him in, the excerpt goes like this:

"Taking small steps, she pushed her way through the crowd and right up to the bars. The beast that the Shadow spoke about screamed at the sight of her and crouched in the back of the cage. Its tail would around its body and it kicked its huge feet. The elephant sized ears flapped about the snake-like head. Blood soaked the feathered breast and drenched the lion-like legs and feet."

Drawing of my OC, Requiem, from my story Grade Zed.

Awesome work. Super clean too. Looks like you put a lot of care and attention into these character drawings. Nice to see them posed and in varied positions also.

Can I ask if you drew from reference? I find it really difficult to get the creases on clothes right without looking at a picture or something, yet you seem to do the clothing expertly here.

You're also inspiring me to learn how to hatch properly! The contrast to the un-shaded or lightly shaded areas, especially when cleanly outlined looks so cool!

@The SlamJam  Thanks!

@No1sy Thank you!

Can I ask if you drew from reference? I find it really difficult to get the creases on clothes right without looking at a picture or something, yet you seem to do the clothing expertly here.

*Cough* References? Yes, actually. Lots :D For Requiem especially, I came up with her outfit after seeing at least 4 different clothing. For the folds and frills I did have to look up online how to do it more realistically. But most of the creases and folds I'm grabbing out of the manga I own (Karneval vol. 1 and 2).

Refs are really helpful. My photographic memory is also pretty bad haha, so I have to refer back to pictures and refs each time.

@Lego Thanks! Yeah. Moody + powerful = Destructive. Think kid throwing a tantrum in a digitally made world, lol.

*In regards to hatching, I often have a hard time deciding between that or just coloured in shading. Hatching is pretty fun to do though, and it looks cleaner. For the second piece I used a ruler to draw the lines straight across the wider parts.
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: legomaestro on April 07, 2016, 11:12:21 PM
Hatching with a ruler? I might have to try that out
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: suuper-san on April 08, 2016, 03:47:01 AM
those are gorgeous drawings, i love the hatching render you do on them :P
how long does it take to draw those pictures?

i think on both of your drawings though the hips are not very wide, it makes the character look slightly top heavy. most the the proportions are well balanced, so its not very noticeable. but it was more noticeable on the requiem one, because her figure is more prominent in the drawing.

@lego using a ruler is great but it slows you down a hell of a lot. you might as well use hatching screentone it would probably be faster.

^@echo just to double check does it take longer hatching with a ruler? i suddenly dont trust myself :P

good work and keep it up :P
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on April 09, 2016, 12:55:22 PM
Thanks Suuper! On average it took me 6-7 hours to finish these drawing, I think.

My process goes something like this -
1: Sketch - 1-2 hrs.
2: Cleaning up and linearting - 2-4 hrs.
3: Details and shading 3-4 hrs.

I see what you mean on the hips o_o I'll try to fix that. Usually when I'm doing them, I wonder if they're too wide, and downsize them. So I'll look out for that. Thanks ^^

As for ruler hatching...  I'm sort of a mechanical person, so it didn't take too long. Maybe 30 minutes?
Ruler - draw line - shift ruler - draw line.

Thanks Vacant XD Not quite an art swap. I'm offering to draw headshots of characters and Churro requested two of hers.

wow you did a bunch more stuff quickly :P
i think digital colouring suits you more since your style gives very clean linearts :P
very nice headshots, i like all the tufts of hair, i find that quite hard to do myself :P
i like the spaced out neck shading, for some reason i do that a lot as well, it just looks nice :P

Post by: Echo_River on May 24, 2016, 05:25:59 PM
@Suuper Thanks! XD I do them quickly, because usually the motivation to draw is only there for a while before I don't draw for another while ahaha.

I am trying more digital art. I'm enjoying it so far XD

So, this is what I've been doing lately. More character art (aside from the VN artwork). Been trying to draw between the times I have to complete essay assignments. If only essays were as easy as the artwork...

1. Capriccio
A male OC from my story Grade Zed.

Spoiler
(http://pre06.deviantart.net/7fce/th/pre/f/2016/142/8/b/capriccio___lightning_leader_by_neysun-da3fapk.jpg)

2. Vivace
Female OC from my story Grade Zed, whom I also entered into MR Project # 2: Age of Corruptions.
Spoiler
(http://orig15.deviantart.net/69dc/f/2016/145/9/9/vivace___flamethrower2_by_neysun-da3s3i5.jpg)

Lightning and Fireee!! They were both fun to do. Although in Capriccio's I forgot to put the background first before the character, so it was a bit of a mess trying to draw it beneath him.

I learned better when doing Vivace's -_- conquered the BG before the OC and had quite an easier time. She was actually drawn sideways. Saw some poses drawn like that and decided to try it out myself XD

Guh my internet is always foolish sometimes. I can't see the Fire dude for some reason.

For a lightning user Capriccio looks pretty chilled back and relaxed. Like the whole design thing going on with him. Good stuff Echo!

nice simple shading on the clothes looks nice for the level of detail.
when drawing chibi fingerless hands, i try and imagine they are wearing a skin coloured mitten, that helps to simplify the shape as well :P
i like the shoes as well :P

@Lego It impresses me as well. Shows that those awesome artwork you see elsewhere can be done with the same steps XD

@swearzy Hahaha XD You're so right. Now I can't think of anything else but that when I see that hand lol.

@suuper Thank you! That is a good tip. I'll be sure to attempt that.

Here is another drawing, a male OC from Grade Zed.

His name is Canon.

Spoiler
(http://s25.postimg.org/4bvabqwov/Canon_Projectile_Specialist.jpg)

Character info
Canon is an adult gamer who after work in his free time, likes to play Grade Zed, an online multiplayer melee game, where "Contenders" are tasked to "Execute" other players (kind of like CoD). The drawing and design are of his in-game persona, so he custom made the outfit himself : )

The name Canon is not his original username; it was assigned to him when he joined Capriccio's team as the 6th member.

Canon's in-game class is gunner, and his skills include equipping and handling any type of firearm from handguns to energy beam shooters. In the eye embedded with his custom insignia, he can calculate specs such as distance, wind factor, best type of shot, and opponent type.

I'd love to try actually making his uniform one day

i love your shading style. i think i said that before but i really do :P
thats a nice balance of detail on the clothes, and nice clothes design as well.
i think the only thing that sticks out is his right eye seems a bit smaller than his left, but thats about it :P
nice name choice, looks like it suits him :P

Totally digging the outfit on Canon! Its interesting to see the shirt overlapping his hips since uniforms tend to be stuffed inside the waist band. Its different, specially since it sort of acts like a coat as well, but looks good!
I'm also digging the shading style, very crisp and neat~

Thank you for the comment!

Actually I should place more character info like you do ahaha.

So the story, Grade Zed is based, in a more science fiction environment, a highly futuristic setting where VR games are really common to play.

A bit of Canon's character info -

Here is it without the template
Spoiler
(http://s25.postimg.org/7mxw087pb/Et_Na_Ke2.jpg)

It's been a while since I've drawn these girls. This is their character info, not much different from the last time, but their ages are slightly different.

From left to right -

1. Ettilis Hakara (Updated Info)
Age: 11
Info: A reserved girl that is often employed as a courier for the organizations her relatives are active in. She has an older sister who was turned against those organizations as a Shadow Hunter, a being that attacks people to drain them of shadow energy.

Ettilis Hakara (Old File)

2. Nameni Foxtayl (Updated Info)
Age: 7
Info: An always energetic little girl with flaring orange hair. She doesn't seem to understand what break time from playing means. Adopted and living with a large family, Nameni likes to bother her older brother Roun most of the time in her impish and mischievous way. It isn't known where she is from but rumoured that she possess a fox form.

Nameni Foxtayl (Old File)
Nameni Foxtayl (Always keep changing her hair >_>)
Age: 7 (Or so)
Physique: Short and small (Than the average 7 year-old-er)
Other: Orange brownish hair always kept in two ponytails. I see her in black shortalls with a red sweater
beneath. Not a major character, more like a comic relief, always pestering her "Ronny" (Main character).
Just plain impish and mischievious. History goes that she's from the Nanrot clan, but no one's supposed to
know that, uh, (So don't go telling anyone! XD).

3. Dakei Adsoku (Known as "Kei". Updated info)
Age: 9
Info: A quiet and wary child, Kei has a twin brother, Da"Kon". She and her sibling as shadow users mainly serve as infiltration scouts of enemy organizations, and are very well paid for it.

Dakei Adsoku (Old file)
Dakei Adsoku (Called "Kei" cause the Da is just...Dah)
Age:8-9 (Little older than the other two anyway.)
Other: Small girl with black hair. She has a twin brother (Da "Kon") and both of them are mainly Infiltrators
(just heading into targeted bases first to open a way in) and their key tool is a grappler (Sticks on the belt
type device attached by a strong wire). Usually as mild as Ettilis, but more emotional around her brother.

Ooooh, the re-draw is looking good. You can clearly see the improvement which always gets me excited. One of the major reasons I like this meme (I've done it off an on). I like that you decided to show some of the waist more along with darkening/shading some of the outfits. Also body portions are looking pretty good! No more big heads!
I like Ettilis Hakara face,  Dakei Adsoku outfit, and the personality/body language of Nameni Foxtayl~

@RaziKitsune Thank you! It had me excited as well. And yeah, big heads were a cur of mind back in the day haha.

@suuper Thank you! I know, I usually don't redraw as well because I'm always looking for a new pose. But maybe I'll do another one, but I have a lot of old drawings that just might want to be redone. We'll see.

@Lego Thanks XD Aww, you have improved! Improvement is improvement. But yeah, I remember how dissatisfied I was back then ahaha...
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: suuper-san on June 05, 2016, 04:20:36 PM
i know what you mean about a new pose, often my old drawings used simpler poses because i was no good at more complex ones, so redrawing it doesnt always show your true improvement. i suppose you have to take te concept of what you drew, and  redraw it from there to get a whole new piece but based on the original, i guess. i think that goes beyond the point of the draw it again meme though :P

Cool stuff Echo, it's easy to see a clear improvement.

You are able to add way more detail now and also apply your really cool shading technique. Moreover you've even improved your understanding of anatomy to the point where you could adjust the characters into more feasible poses.

@Cheshire Haha, that's so true XD

Here's the once in a while drawing for now ^^ It's been really busy for me, doing lots of stuff other than drawing. I'll be taking a driving course next week (eek! So excited!)

nice!

Thanks Suuper XD
It's all by pencil, drawing in it from different directions though, shading diagonally first, horizontally, vertically, etc. to get the texture look even.
The wings were fun to do ^^

wow i super respect that, it looks like you used screentone :P
oh do you use really textured paper? because on the tunic you can really see a bit of texture coming through, that might be it maybe :P
love the neat shading as always though :P
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on July 10, 2016, 03:29:58 PM
I think the texture quality is due to the fact I put this stiff cardboard underneath my paper when I'm shading, suuper O: You can see the line strokes more distinctly in this picture, but in some parts it has this grainy look which I think is from the cardboard.

Spoiler
(https://s25.postimg.org/5zzzufabj/Governor_of_Overseer_Hall.jpg)

Character somewhat concept art for a story challenge given to me by Dr.Striker. His glove, scarf, and hat are...monsters. He is known as the Governor of Overseer Hall and is tasked with keeping the peace between humans and other beings such as ghosts, demons, dragons, monsters, etc.

I might draw him again because this angle didn't really make his face look that great :p
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: MahluaandMilk on July 10, 2016, 05:04:38 PM
Oooh, I love the tones and hatching/crosshatching work. It brings the shading to light with a certain texture, which may be due in part to the underlying cardboard as you said, but it still looks excellent.

But yeah there is a little something odd about the face. I think it's the positioning of the eyes...

Post by: Echo_River on July 11, 2016, 10:28:37 AM
@Mahlua Thank you! Yeah, I thought something was off about the head. I couldn't quite pinpoint it though. In general it was tricky placing the nose and mouth to look good. Perhaps it is the eyes.

@Matsui Thanks! I was told that monster looked like one of these ->

I made new outfits for them ^^ instead of the long coat style, I tried to draw them in more formal wear, I suppose you could say. For me, their usual clothes are their "work" clothes, and these would be their "casual" clothes.

Damn Echo, such pro pencil work. Love that second one too, and the design on the first one is pretty solid. *Cough* how much does a commission cost?

Quissis looks less wise and more ready to murder people than I thought. It fits somehow

What is Universe Cornea again?
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on August 10, 2016, 09:48:02 AM
@Coryn Thanks! I find slanted angles so cool myself  8)

@Lego *ahem* Depends. I wasn't planning to take on another art request lol. But if it's for a fellow raider, I don't mind. So you can request anything free of charge ^_^ just PM me.

So, in Charred Life there's the original universe, which is called Universe Aenro, and there's where Kinan and everyone else lives. Where Quissis lives is in the alternate reality, which is known as Universe Cornea.

Decided to break away from character drawings to do something I wanted to finish since... last year? (The date on the drawing says it all.)

Spoiler

Script 1.1
Story - Blue Moon Circle 4-koma 1 (Storyboard)

Title - N/A

Characters -
Jinx
Drek

Panel 1 - (Drek looks on as Jinx piles up books)
Jinx: I'll just pile the books like this so they're not on the floor.

Panel 2 -
Drek: Why like this? We could get you another bookshelf.
Jinx: Nah, just felt like it.

Panel 3 - (Drek takes a moment to think)
Drek: ...............

Panel 4 - (Jinx looks on in shock as Drek does a flying kick through the books)
Jinx: HEY. What're you doing that for?!
Drek: Dunno. Just felt like it.

Yeah, I wanted to try a 4-koma, but I got stuck when refining the drawing...

Should I remove the third panel?

This is the revised script if I were to take out the third panel, cause I was thinking it could be unnecessary.

Script 1.2
Story - Blue Moon Circle 4-koma 1 (Storyboard)

Title - N/A

Characters -
Jinx - Adult man that tends to do things on the whim without much thought.
Drek - Teenage boy that has to deal with Jinx's whims.

Panel 1 - (Drek looks on as Jinx piles up books)
Jinx: I'll just pile the books like this so they're not on the floor.

Panel 2 -
Drek: We could just get you another bookshelf...
Jinx: Nah, I just feel like doing this.

Panel 3 - (Jinx looks on in shock as Drek does a flying kick through the books)
Jinx: AHHH. What do you think you're doing?

Panel 4 - (Drek gives a slightly smug look while dusting off his hands.)
Drek: Dunno. I just felt like doing that.

What's the name of the top three characters?

Like the spear Nakaja is wielding. Cool designs Echo! They seem to be more chibi than you normally do but I like the style.

They all look pretty pissed for some reason haha.

@ Killer B!! Thanks man!

@ Lego - The name of the leftmost character is Kawyn. As for the other two, I haven't decided yet XD

Yep! I used a more 'childish' style so to say.

Haha. "We're all small!! How could you??" maybe.  :D

Super impressed with all your recent artwork Echo :)

I especially like the eye detail in the couple of close-ups you did a page back, plus the clothing for "Nigcht"?!?!?!? is stellar!

The 4-Koma is pretty cute also, and the improvements made to your artwork since the old version is really noticeable, even if it's still in sketch stages.
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: legomaestro on September 04, 2016, 08:56:52 AM
Someone better tell me how to pronounce Nigcht, because even my mind bites its tongue for that one haha.

Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on September 04, 2016, 10:00:59 PM
@ No1sey Thank you very much! I'm glad to know I've improved XD

@ Lego Would you believe I can't exactly pronounce it myself XD
It's in two parts..."Nig" and "cht".
The "nig" it supposed to come from the word "night", so it should sound similar to "nig" in "night" without sounding the "t" but softly pronouncing the "g".
And the "cht" should sound somewhat like the "chit" if you were to say "chitter".

So it would sound something like "Naig-chit"....
...I don't suppose that makes it any easier to say ahaha...

That explains about nothing No1sey! You're lucky internet speak makes us say Noise - ee instead of No onesey!

Hey Echo, if you're up for it I'll be sending my character commission today? Could make it an art trade if ye want.

By the way, I think I asked this already but what pencils do you use? Do you have a whole arsenal of them lying around?
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on September 06, 2016, 10:29:29 AM
Sure, send it in! No better way to start a school year than doing my favourite hobby mwahaha.
An art trade sounds like fun! If you're up to it, I'll pull up something ^^

I do sorta have a bunch, but they're not really anything special. I have two mechanical pencils with which I use 0.5 2B led. And then sometimes I use the regular HB pencils.

You're off to a good start and I can tell you're comfortable with your work. I think you should work on creating characters I. A way that makes them stand out from each other. Many of your drawing appear to have the same face, like clones everywhere lol. Play around with different eyes , facial features, things of that nature .

@ Roman1030
Thanks! I know what you mean. That's one of my greatest weaknesses...
I'll try to work towards characters that are distinct from each other.

Art Update --

I've been juggling work, writing assignments, and some other after school activities, but I've managed to squeeze some art out from the workload pressure.

Here is some of the stuff I've been working on:

Art request for someone on DA.
Spoiler
(http://s25.postimg.org/7wnbfovwf/AR_Elliot.jpg)

Redraw of the characters that are actually on the first pic I uploaded here (really??).
Somehow, looking at both of the drawings, there's a difference, but they're still similar....?
Spoiler
(http://s25.postimg.org/9zxqncvpb/Team_Adsoku_Sierra_2016.jpg)

Drawing for that Grade Zed series I started, where the characters have special in-game abilities.
This one here is Scherzando, which means "playful" in musical terms. Her in-game class is dancer, her colour theme is pink, and her icon is a black skull with a ribbon. She appears to be a young girl during the game, but she is actually a young adult.
Spoiler
(http://s25.postimg.org/higvvzn27/Scherzando_Dancer_of_Death.jpg)

I used ink pens on the first two. I find I like the all-pencil look better though, so I didn't use the ink pens on the character in the last drawing. Only the floating squares around her are inked.

Post by: Philosotaku on October 26, 2016, 03:22:49 PM
You really like drawing eyes that are flat on the top. But you showed you can put so much detail into them in the last one! Seriously, you should do that more.

I also like the hair-style variety. That's one of your stronger suits. Keep at it!

But I agree with Roman that you could do a lot to make them stand out from one another. Here's a thought: experiment with different chin types. I think that's the most common thing out of all of them.
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on November 25, 2016, 07:15:17 PM
@Philosotaku Thank you for your comments! I think I'm scared of experimenting with different chin types, but varying them is probably my cure. Will try to venture more into that zone. XD

Art update:

It's been a while since I posted my last picture...
This is something I drew on Halloween. An old character of mine

Spoiler
(https://s25.postimg.org/f1fdhkha7/River2016.jpg)

I've been caught up in studying for a music exam, writing my story, and work. There hasn't been a lot of time to draw, but I've managed to squeeze this other little sketch out.

Drawing of my OC and MC Roun and his shadow contract partner, Edos, which is actually Roun's nickname for the dragon. Edos stands for "Emperor Dragon of Shadow".

He looks small here, but Edos is able to change his size, shape, form. Dragons are something I need practice with, so I'm starting small ^_^

Halloween  girl is very untrustworthy... Looks cute for sure though!

Aye aye aye, hope the business isn't killing too much motivation. Hang in there Echo.

The dragon was strangely hard to find haha. I kept on looking at the claw for the face and didn't notice it was parked under his chin. Edos is a cool name, and the shading is spot on as always. Good stuff!
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on November 25, 2016, 08:00:06 PM
Thanks Lego! It's mostly the act of shoving information into my head that seems to be the hardest... Lots of input blocking the output. Trying to remember though, that once it's done I won't have to do it again. XD

Yep, hidden in plain sight haha. I plan to do more drawings of Edos though, so you'll get more chances to see his face.

@BobbyJoeX Aww I'm glad they can cheer you up a little XD

@Lego I don't know how I'm so------rry! X_X It's a matter of using the pencil a lot, I guess. Becoming friends with it? ^^;

Ouch. Hang in there XD I have to go out shoveling snow myself right now...

Same. Always nice to see your stuff around. I like the background stones on that last bit. I am starting to see a little development in the three dimensional form taking up space on a two dimensional page. The place I see it most in your art is the faces, which sometimes have this awkward amount of white space that doesn't quite fit for the full geometric shape, but it's starting to clear up a little.

Ohhh, I see what you mean. That's something I'm aiming for. Actually when I inked drawings, the 2D was really apparent. Even though it's slightly smudgier, doing the whole picture in pencil seems to give it a better look.

Very nice works you show us Echo :D And the lined shadings are crazy accurate! The perspective on the last one is a bit odd at the wall the character is leaning on, but the lovely texture of the stone makes up for that. Keep it up!

Wow, you're still drawing? That's really amazing!

Compared to last time, you work looks like it has improved ten-fold!

The eyes look so much more life-like, shading is superb, I can really tell that you have not been idle since I was last here. (And omg, that hair looks like something straight out of a professional's own work!)

I know it's been a while, but what's new? :)

@Gabryel Thanks! ^^ I'll work more on that!

@Watcher Hoi! Long time no see! Yeah, I'm surprised I'm still drawing too, haha.

Thank you very much ;w; It's reassuring to hear that. Hair is usually the trickiest part aside from proper body proportions, but I find using references really helps, so I've been using them a lot lately. XD

I had to take a break from serious drawing when I started working. After I settled into the job routine, I started back up on the art (stress relievers, and for when you know you should be doing something else but you want to draw XD ). What's new with you?

@Lego Thanks! Auth has the oddest origin. I made the character for a story and didn't want to spend too much time naming him, so I used the word closest to me at the time - the "auth" from "authentic". His personality is questionable though. XD

Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on April 10, 2017, 10:55:09 AM
Yeah, it does do that. T_T Do you use a scanner for your drawings? It helps if there's less shadow on the paper.
And then I go through a couple of steps in Paint.NET to get it to look white. Namely, adjusting contrasting settings, and using the monochrome colour function. A regular scan puts so much blue onto the paper...

Wut...? Last time I posted was in April? That's a mad gap.
I've been swamped with work and school mostly. So I haven't seen this place in a whiiilllleeee.

I'm still drawing, traditional - and digital now. : D I've mostly been posting on DA. If you want to take a look at some of my recent drawings, you can click the link in my signature.
Or you can wait till I upload some of those pics here. Slowly. I'll try not to spam. Ahah.

Speaking of doing digital... I, uh, I'm hoping to get back into doing VN stuff... *gulp*
It's a lot easier and faster now. Although my style has changed a bit, I'd like to continuing helping with MR VN art... (if you'll have me back - feeling guilty I kinda disappeared without notice. Bad habit. I'm sorry.)

Okay, before I hit the sack, here's a drawing from me - up there.
She's one of my characters. Most of the upcoming pictures will be of my characters.
I might explain some of my stories they're in while I'm at it as well.

Cheers.

Thanks guys for taking the time to view and comment. ^^ I appreciate it!

Drawing I did for the Lunar New Year/Chinese New Year/Year of the Dog.
Thought it was high time I drew some of my own canine characters....

This is Terra Cotta. (She's Kinan's dog.)

@Fro Haha thanks! I did have that hue of red in mind. It's funny cause I imagine her as redder than that, but natural dog colours aren't that vibrant.

Art Update --

May... June...July... Aug - goodness, where did those months go?
Hello, dropping in once again. I've been resting up during the summer break mostly, but I haven't been idle! (procrastinating yes - but not idle! haha...)

Digital art is still going. Here are a few new ones:

Drawn for a contest on DA

I'll post more later.

Still been doing some traditional! Character sketches:

That's a super nice variety you have in those character sketches! I feel what you mean about not exactly idle but definitely procrastinating. That's been me most of this summer too. Always nice to have you back.

That contest piece looks like a real winner to me. I love when people put hot and cold colors so close. It's a really soothing effect on the eyes.
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Coryn on August 03, 2018, 11:15:42 PM
I really do like the way you do the shading on the traditional characters. The bold lines really give things a sense of texture that you can kinda interpret as either fabric or hair.

Shira does not appear to be in a good way. And those are some seriously creepy looking leaves  those are kind of leaves man eating plants from Venus have...
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: suuper-san on August 04, 2018, 02:27:25 AM
great to see an update!
I love the traditional ones. the lines are great. and i love the hatching shading. I like how you vary the spacing between the lines in different areas as well.
creepy leaves for sure.

great contest entry too. that sort of style of art is a bit difficult for me to understand or critique, but it looks very cool.
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on August 06, 2018, 10:40:57 AM
Thanks guys! XD

@Mahlua It was contest where you had to draw someone's OC in the theme of "Spring Sunset", so it had me studying how to combine those different colours together TwT

The shading style is my favourite. It's easy to do (especially when I'm in a lazy mood lol)

Someone mentioned how the leaves look like lips, but I didn't think they were that creepy. Just imagine walking through a forest of them >:3 I rather like my leaves with holes o ho ho.

Speaking of which, I remember I had this sketch I did for fun, experimenting with perspective and scenery.

Character: Nakaja and Bobby's character, Jr.

Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Coryn on August 06, 2018, 10:49:09 AM
I do really like the colors on that one! It has a very natural feel.

I think what contributes to the leaves' strangeness is that they don't really look like any normal leaves? I can't recall ever seeing a plant where the leaves had a big gap in the middle.
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: suuper-san on August 06, 2018, 12:10:35 PM
wow awesome lighting, it looks really real! I also love the shadows, which I suppose is the same thing but thats also really cool. Also how the characters have a lighter area around them to make them stand out more.
the sketch style is nice but maybe a little too rough for a "final piece" sketch feel. I really like the perspective, and great colours.

I can't recall ever seeing a plant where the leaves had a big gap in the middle.
I can't officially either, but I'm sure I've seen something like that on a nature program or something. It's certainly not the normal leaf you'd find outside your house :P

and a LN or game, huh. It's good to have a far off goal, it keeps us on a feet and not stagnating :P I'm sure I've got a novel in me somewhere :P
what sort of game are you thinking of making?
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: anmonia on August 17, 2018, 01:51:03 PM
woaw!! I just really like your traditional artworks! I also noticed that you have a special way putting shadow, you hatch the parts you want to put shadow on and I really like this style! Is there a technique for doing it or you just replace "normal" shadow by hatchs?
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on August 17, 2018, 01:55:05 PM
@ Suuper Thanks!
Haha, that's true XD They were similar to the drawings at the beginning of my gallery, which unfortunately aren't there anymore because that image service went down T_T

Have you written a story before? O:

Well I'm attracted to fantasy sci-fi rpg games like Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Blade and Soul so something along those lines. The idea of making of game is pretty much motivation, as you mentioned XD I can still dream and plan out the story. Putting it into a novel would be more feasible for me though.

@anmonia
Thanks for taking a look! XD
Yep, that's pretty much it ^^ I like to outline the parts where the shadow will go and then hatch it in.
Sometimes I do both - put the normal shade then hatch over it to make it darker.
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: suuper-san on August 17, 2018, 02:06:34 PM
I've written a few chapters of stuff before, but never a full story with both a beginning and end :P I'm starting to lean that way as I will need a bit of writing skills even for dialogue in a manga, but I'm working on art skills first.

it would be great to get the MR game off the ground again. That's been my goal for several years now but it's a big project, even for a small game :P

the mixed shading and hatching is something I do as well. sometimes it just feels like it needs that extra darkness.
Title: Re: Echo Archives

*inserts meme here* Do it O_O
Yeah, I think that'd be neat to see!

Ooph, I'm so guilty of vanishing so often on that. It's on my to-do list for sure. I need to learn to allocate my time properly... TwT

Same. If I want to go darker, I pull out my markers and outline the edges.

Here's a little sketch and painting practice drawing of one of my characters I did some time ago.
This is one I regret not making the resolution higher, because I liked how the centre step came out for the hair. TwT I painted it in, instead of the usual paint bucket fill.

lovely sketch, and thanks for the idea for the hair. I have tried manually painting before, but it looks really awful for me, I haven't figure out how people get that nice effect yet :P *carries on bucket filling*
I'm curious now, what sort of settings did you use for the brush when doing the hair?

Looks like Erza from Fairy Tail

Quote

Been there, done that.
I almost always work on A3 canvas to avoid accidental good pieces getting wasted lol
to be honest though, reinking a finished piece is relatively minimal effort compared to creating it in the first place, and the shading can probably handle being scaled up without much change, since it's soft shading.

@Suuper Thanks! I forget which program you use, but I'm using SAI. I use the Blur water tool it has to blend the second colour onto the base colour.

Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: suuper-san on September 29, 2018, 01:43:44 PM
@echo I use GIMP, and the one thing that I miss is having that blendy brush in Sai

lovely chibis, in somewhat different styles. I like the top one a lot, but I prefer the bottom one as it's more of a complete character. It's a shame the feet are cut off as you drew so much of the character, but the colours and background are great.
I like the simple way you've done the hair. chibis are virtually impossible to critique as they don't follow the laws of anatomy at all, but I think the hands on the middle one are maybe a bit too detailed, they look like more realistic hands, which gives a bizarre feeling to the overall piece.

I miss the hatching though :P

I notice that your lines, especially for the hair, don't always meet up. when colouring do you have to trace the whole shape again as opposed to using a magic-selection/fill-selection tool on the outline? lately I've been completing my outlines so I don't have to trace again but I don't know if I like the style.

Thanks Lego! I'm assuming you're referring to the drawings on the previous page...?
It's funny, because I adore cell shading, but when I do it myself... it feels like something's missing. I can't help but slap the hatching on.  :(

@suuper Thanks! ^^
My dad said something similar about the bottom one TwT "Where are the feet?!"

Middle piece - I see what you mean  Chibis are a bit of a struggle that way too. I was debating between a small simplified hand versus a more proportional one... I wasn't sure how to make it look good and correct at the same time OTL

As for non-connecting hair lines, I actually plug in the gaps with whatever colour I'm using, so that when I bucket paint the rest, it doesn't go spilling out the holes. I used to try to connect all my lines too, but it does give a kinda tight/restrained feeling.

Update -

Cool idea might try that.

love the rendering on that last one, the hair and clothes and nature, its all really neatly done. the feet and lower leg might be a bit small overall though. I like how you shaded the folds in the clothing, it really gives it some depth. I think the way you heavily shaded the clothes makes them appear a little shiny as they contrast strongly with the white areas. either shade a bit lighter or give the clothes a bit of a tone to fix that I think.

I am now following you on DeviantART (don't know why it took me so long to realize that I wasn't).

The digital and traditional work have such a nice overlap, but also really notable and cool stylistic differences. They're both crisp in different ways, and they're both so distinctly yours. If I had to give it a word, I'd go with "pleasant."

Inktober is such a mess. Maybe I should participate next year by starting out with one of those bulk packs of Bic ballpoint pens.
I'm also really digging the shadow design that follows most of the characters. It has such a distinct substance that makes them all uniform. Like, you can really tell that they're a similar if not the same "species", sort of. It's a really nice touch.

@Coryn Shadow...men... you couldn't mean the ones that show up during sleep paralysis?
*Goes to search it up* Oh gosh that nightmare fuel!!  :(
Haha, thanks though, Coryn. The shadow parts were my favourite to do.

@Suuper Yup. And I can feel the other ones starting to give out too. Thank you! ^^

@Lego Thanks! They took about 1-3 hours to do, as I was usually rushing to complete them before midnight haha.
Yeah, Dave has a normal outfit on purpose. Maybe I should post the story... then it'll make sense  :D

@Mahlua Yeaaaah makes you rush push for time everyday and dem ink supplies can so be expensive, man.
I get what you mean on the shadow design. I was going for a similarity to link them all so I'm glad that came through! Thank you! XD

I try my best to buy the cheapest art supplies I can get, partly because I'm a cheapo at heart but also because I don't want to believe that "money=>better art". there is a certain difference between cheap and low quality though, like pens that leak or blob, which are too risky for me XD

wow 1-3 hours each. that's some dedication for Inktober. Actually mine were about an hour on the days I did it. Didn't always finish before midnight though haha.

@suuper I getcha. I find it's hard to find that balance between affordable and good-quality. Like, man, one copic marker costs as much as a pack of lower-quality markers...

Didn't always finish before midnight though haha.
Haha to be honest that was me too  But I figured if I did most of the drawing before midnight my effort counted for that day.

Dr. Kirtscher Rain and Eolran are my favourites (dose' names though haha, Echo you're legendary at making complicated names hahaha. Teach me!)  But I love the linework in all of them overall. Not only do the characters have great shading but the trees and animals and other props do too. You had a great Inktober! Great stuff!

Post by: suuper-san on November 15, 2018, 08:21:36 AM
I love your render style for wood, its really versatile as you've used it in different ways for each of the pictures.
great folds and shading on the clothes, they look really realistic. and cool to see the same characters in different styles.
I love all the extra plant details with the different types of leaves, petals and fungi growing on each scene.

how big are these images by the way? I get the feeling they are about A5 or slightly less? don't why just a feeling :P

Post by: Echo_River on November 18, 2018, 04:56:38 PM
@Gabryel Thanks! I drew them for Inktober. The characters themselves are from a fantasy story project I'm working on. I kinda used Inktober to practice drawing them :)

@Lego Thanks man! Haha, sometimes I think I should stick to normal names lol. I use a system for some of the names. For example, Eolran's from a clan that often puts "-an" in their names. Otherwise... I use the roll off of the tongue method  ;)

@Suuper Wow... you're spot on O_O How'd you do that? Yeah, actually 7-8-9 and 10-11-12 are drawn on two letter-sized pages, so they're on the small side. I find its easier to draw a fullbody character if they're 1/4 the size of a page.
And thanks c: It's fun making up different plants and such.

@Walter Thank you! ^^

haha I'm surprised I got it right :P
I guess the level of detail meant that you're not drawing it so small (or you're insanely good), but the thickness of the lines and the way the ink flowed meant it wasn't so big either.

you should have totally posted these on the Inktober topic haha it would have been great to see these as they came out.
absolutely gorgeous animals, and amazing you can produce such a good quality every day for Inktober - I was just all over the place XD

are the animals of your own design? they're all similar to real animals but they've got that uniqueness to them.
the wolf one is probably my favourite, folllowed by the bird. Although the dragon is pretty cool too :P
Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: legomaestro on November 22, 2018, 06:18:17 PM
Oh gawd Echo your Inktober really was amazing. Look at those animals! These are beautiful stuff to look at. Love em all. The first one is my favourite. That huge wolf reminds me of so many of my favourite wolfs in popular culture (White Fang, Ghost, the wolf in the last season of Samurai Jack) that I have to insta like it. But the Dinosaur is cool too. It should be cute with its chubby body but those shadow eyes make me fear it. Nice effect.

You really have a great illustrative style. I need to learn this. Teach me!

Title: Re: Echo Archives
Post by: Echo_River on November 25, 2018, 08:56:21 PM
@suuper That makes sense O:
Some days it just flowed out smoothly. Other days (as you'll see in the following drawings) weren't so good imo. Always gets a little tough in the middle haha.
And yes! Mostly of my design. I find that tweaking already existing creatures is way easier than trying to make up an entirely new species XD

@Lego haha thanks! Ikr, wolves just add a special touch to stories ^^
There's a lot on the "teach me" list now  Even though I haven't recorded them all down lol. I should just do a big compilation of them someday...

@devola Thank you!! I'll admit, trying to do the long lines in one stroke without messing up brought on quite a bit of nervousness XD

Here's Kinan to wish you a Merry Christmas

Thanks guys XD

very nice, I like the shading style and the line variation :)
I saw an artist on DeviantArt that does something similar to this shading style and wanted to try it out.

Update --

I don't have a lot of finished pieces this time around. Instead I've been working on putting down concepts for my story - character/environment designs and such.

Bit of a sketch dump but this is how I like to get things down.

Character Design - Dae
This is a character I've had around for a loooong time and decided to redesign her. She's Shira's older sister.

your concept sketches are really great.
I really like your sketchy style as well.
great character designs, and nice to see the notes and descriptions of stuff.
I wouldn't have thought a detection ability was a "defect" though, although I can't think of an alternative word XD

I'm digging the design of Dae there. It's all looking good (not particularly constructive or useful I know) :P

Wow neat stuff! Especially the Dae-girl :o But I actually like all your concept stuff a lot.  Hope we get to see more of it!

@suuper Haha, true. The 'defect' came after she got into an accident, so she considers it as something definitely not normal XD

@Robin ^^; By using the time I should've been using for academic studies, ehehe. (Lol, I hadn't realized that either xp)

@Vacant Thanks! I appreciate the comment ^^

@Gabryel Aw, thanks! I'll remember to post more in the future. c:

Update --

Realized I hadn't mentioned it here, but I'll tell you guys now. A few of you might know this already.
I've started drawing a little random comic series that I'm posting on Tapas!

Trash Head Talks - A slice of life story following a struggling writer and his misadventures.

Link to Comic: https://tapas.io/series/Trash-Head-Talks

It's an experimental project, as I want to get accustomed to drawing a character consistently in some sort of story setting. Would anyone be interested if I posted it here as well?

More sketches -

Sigh Lavallen: Aseloti Appearance
Note: The Aseloti are a race in the story that has catlike features and behaviours whicih show when they get excited. Sigh normally looks like a human girl with a shy and moody personality, but takes on a wild appearance when triggered: tufted ears, animal-like eyes, extended claws and teeth.

I am definitely more likely to read it on MR than on another site, because I am more used to how the forum looks. Also I can comment more freely here than getting another account somewhere else and all that.
that being said I read the first chapter and very cool. great idea with taking off the hat to throw something away.
and yes drawing a character consistently is a great skill to have. I'm working through that hurdle in my own way with fanart but a comic is equally good if not a better way to get in that skill. all the best for it! and I'll try and read the rest sometime!

cool idea with the Aseloti. reminds me a tad of Natsu in Fairy Tail, when he gets really angry/powerful his skin starts turning scaley.

@suuper Gotcha. And thanks! I'm finding it's a lot harder to keep a consistent schedule, even though I'm trying to post every two weeks. Part of the challenge I guess.

Yep! It's fun to see characters transform c:

Lately I've been just sketching/doodling. Not a lot of finished works.
Earlier this month I attempted a different style after looking at some art books. I need to get used to colouring more....It was fun to do and I rather like the result of it.
Feel free to give suggestions/feeback.

It looks good Echo! The shading/colouring on the hair is particularly well done. Overall there's not much I can offer in terms of feedback other than maybe the shading on the face isn't quite right. If I look at it for a while something about the placement of the shadows on the nose and left side (our left) of the face doesn't seem to quite add up. It feels more of a nit pick than anything glaringly wrong though, either way great work.

nice headshot. I agree with Dev the shadow placement feels a little off. As well I think the nostril lines are maybe too low or too far apart, it makes the nose look quite wide. For learning shade and practice, photos and observation are your best bet obviously.
