i've watched countless anime's and god knows how many episodes. As my japanese improves Im noticing that the Subs are not always translated properly. Im aware that one word can mean a few different things in Japanese.
Toreaizu can mean a number of things depending on the context of the sentence.
has anyone noticed that the subs can actually be off?
-
Yeah i noticed that after a while, since i accidentally learnt some japanese just by watching anime haha. It's normal though, more often than not it's all fansubs. Horriblesubs is my favourite group so far, they get things right most of the times. Also, the more famous an anime is, the more accurate the subs tend to be.
-
ya I'm begging to notice that too.
I mean im watching bleach on:

I've no idea who did the Subs but honestly they should be shot ha. There not as accurate as they should be in my opinion. Japanese is an awesome language in my opinion. :clapping:
-
yeh. since it's mostly done by fans, you're basically garrunteed some mistakes. Of course the severity ranges from show to show.
i had been watching Cyborg 009 in the english dubs. Which weren't all that bad actually. But the way I found the epsiodes was in a massive collection someone put together, and about 10 of the episodes from season 2 are subbed. Which i'm guessing whoever did it didn't speak English anywhere close to their first language. It's like they ran it through the 1995 version of google translate.
-
I notice it often, though not really a mistranslation I often notice mis-pluralization.
-
They're Fansubs after all, so they're bound to have problems. Specially since the subbers are doing them out of the love of it, they're not getting paid or anything.
It also goes both ways, when English gets translated into Japanese it gets mistranslated or even slaughtered at times.
That's why official subs are your most accurate take, though they're not free and are only available once the series gets an international DVD release.

i had been watching Cyborg 009 in the english dubs.
Is that anime any good? Heard of it but not sure what it's about
-
yeh. the filler is annoying at times. But it has some actual dark themes in it. Like the episode with the guy who can move so fast time slows down. He ends up stuck going so fast time essentially stops around him for like a year, and he starts going insane.
-
Yeah that one was bad. Especially since he had to feel a sword entering his heart for almost as long as the time.
-
*facepalm*
You asked me about cyborg 009 lego. remember?
-
*face desk
I thought i was commenting on Bleach for some reason i don't even know
... sometimes i don't even know why i bother.

You were talking about bleach because I used it as a comparison in the OP lol.
-
Did someone say OP!!!! :o :o
Haha just kidding, but as I was reading about cyborg that episode really did sound alot like the episode in bleach; reminded me instantly of it!
