Title: Daisetsu's works
Post by: Daisetsu-bushido on September 01, 2012, 07:57:01 AM
Hello everyone! This is my first post on this forum and I hope I'll find here some help and tips about improving my drawing style. I'm drawing for quite a long time but I'm not perfect or as good as many other artists on Deviantart so I still need to practice. And I hope you'll help me with this :). So here goes [uploaded by tinypic.com]:

Cool Drawings~ You said this was your first post right? If so, does that mean you didn't go to the Welcome thread? If not you should go introduce yourself. If you did, I feel like an idiot for saying the before sentence. XD
Love how the Blonde girl isn't hugging the bunny but instead is choking the living f**k out of it XD Hope for more soon.

Nice art, I recommend practicing facial expressions as yours are nice, but they could get better. The emotions portrayed from facial expressions almost completes a perfect drawing.

Example: That girl in the snow with the knives looks uninterested and throws the emotion of the whole picture off. Maybe if you gave her an expression to fit the mood it would look better.

Now also you will want to make your poses look more fluid. Your characters seem stiff and to fix that you need to show more action. Humans are constantly moving, specially in manga/anime. In that scene where the characters are together they are all calmly standing there. It looks fine, but that leads the scene to look plain without anything really special to look at. The girl on the right could have a better pose showing movement and almost looks like she doesn't belong.

That action scene you posted could hold better results if you studied sword fighting and action scenes better. The girl charging has a weird running slash stance. That jumping movement is sort of useless like a skip. If you really wanted her to jump while doing a running slash exaggerate it a bit and put more power into it. Show motion by having her wield the sword all the way back giving a full swing as well as have the legs in more action than a skip.

Just minor details set the whole scene of a picture. I'm not that good an artist, but I have good eyes. If you can incorporate more action and emotion into your characters I'm sure you'll improve a lot ^_^.

your colouring is brilliant, and probably your biggest strength in my opinion.
So, here's some advice from someone who's worse than you, because *censored* logic -

The first thing you must study is anatomy. for example, on  http://i47.tinypic.com/29f9eg7.jpg , the girls arm and hand looks so unnatural, and it makes the body look far too distorted.
Another thing to work on, is the necks. Although anime can have some pretty *censored*ed up proportions, these necks look like they couldn't support the faces, and as a result, it subtracts from the images - pic related - http://i50.tinypic.com/4p4ll.jpg

I think in order to fully critique your art, and for you to improve, you need to upload some linearts/pencil sketches. That way, we all can fully see what's wrong with certain aspects, and give you advice to improve!

Thank you all for the comments :).

Nexuun - I sometimes make them :). I work with both media [traditional and digital] and it's hard to tell which is easier for me - both are very challenging.

Rojas - About the facial expressions - you probably mean those which we can often see in humouristic mangas, right? Maybe I should try it someday XD
About the girl in the snow - as my OC staying emotinless [like Yuki Nagato from Haruhi] is one of the elements of her characteristics. I'm not quite sure which expression would be good here...
This stiffnes is probably what makes my style less atractive. It's pretty hard to come up with a good pose... Better focus on that.
And thanks for the tip on that sword fighting pic :)

Minorin_Fumiko - Hmm... Maybe a bit [their hairstyles are the same XD]. Fate would probably spare the bunny XD.

Bmx - Thanks XD

Jamieboy113 - Yeah, anatomy... On the first pic you probably mean the girl on the right - yup, it doesn't look good...
About the second pic - maybe I just made it too long here and that's why.

Ok, here's the newest one made fully by using pencils:

I hope you like it :)

Alright awesome work ^_^ looks great. Good perspective and background.

The shading is decent, but very rough. Try looking at your arm, it doesn't have one side with a hard shadow and one huge highlight. Go from dark to light subtly instead of blatant hard shadow outlines. Though now looking your other shadings look fine in the background. We're you going for the easy anime shading style? It's correct, but you'll get more depth with better shading.

The legs on the girl to the left are wrong. Look at her left leg, it looks weird because it is too small. Legs are never smaller than the arms which is what happened to that one. Perspective and fore shortening play a role, but not that drastically. Work on keeping composition up.

Overall it's a really steady drawing with 1 true flaw that I see is the leg. Good work and keep it up.

Daisetsu-Bushido:=
Now that's ONE-OF-A-KIND drawings that really makes people notice and inspired to draw better.. As much I want to comments, most have say the word... The best I could offer is my drawings to help Daisetsu-Bushido and everyone to improve on what they need.

Haha, I agree with you Daisetsu-Bushido that both traditional and digital are challenging even though you practice them in daily routine.. It's always back to the basic, how much you understand on basic principles of drawings (Anatomy and Lines) and the knowledge to improve it in the way you wanted... The answer is you YOUSELF!... So, errors and mistakes is the true process of learning... Nothing to be ashamed of. Even Pros faced the same challenges as us do.. I can see Daisetsu-Bushido as a CG and Illustrator artist X33

Very nice artwork. Your anatomy can use just a tiny bit of work but Overall you're pretty good!
Title: Re: Daisetsu's works

And here I am again.

Rojas - Yeah, it looks like anime shading style especially on the arms. It's hard to tell if I'm going to that direction because there are two groups of people where one like realistic type of shading and the other likes this anime easy style. So it looks like I ended up with both here XD XD. But I think as the time passes I'll stick with the realistic one.
It was hard to show a running pose from this view and angle. The leg is small because I wanted to indicate its perspective possitioning. But it looks like I failed here...

lordsyafiq - I'm really glad to hear it and that you're going back to drawing. We all can't wait to see your new works :).
Yeah, you're right. It's all about the basics XD. And thank you very, very much for the encouragement. It really means a lot :). And gives a lot of faith that doing all this has a lot more sense than I always thought [I usually do it just for my own self but if someone gets inspired by looking at it then I guess it really has a lot of sense]. It really cheers up. Thank you very much :).

Fronomenal - Yeah, I know... Glad you like it :)

So here's a nekomimi for you XD:

hi!
just quickyl looking over your pictures they are quite good. something that stood out to me that you might want to improve was the shading, not that it is bad, but it is very blended, i think it would look better if your shaded areas were more defined, if that makes sense...

Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: Daisetsu-bushido on February 22, 2013, 03:51:27 PM
Sure XD.  In GIMP by using a paintbrush you can draw sparkles.  You draw a lot of small-sized sparkles close to each other and then smudge them up and down. For fire it's good to use colors like yellow and orange.
I once learned it from here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRUOm4x4MRQ but it's good to sometimes smudge on different directions when you want to indicate the wind or something like that.

No problem XD.
Ok everyone, I managed to make another work pretty fast:

It was the first time when I used the speed lines which indicates action in manga. The lineart was made of pure boredom while waiting in the library so there may be some mistakes which I can't see without help of other artists. But I decided to draw it all to it's present look after all.

What do you think?

Yo, thanks for the comments XD.

Minorin - That's my first Pikachu I've ever drawn XD. I'm glad you like it XD.

Jamie - As for the program I use GIMP as always.

Legomaestro - Thanks. About digital works - I always make the lineart on the paper first, then scan it and it goes to GIMP. There I correct the lineart with the mouse [with 1 pixel wide lines] and add everything else.

Happy Easter everyone! Just couldn't resist to add Kurousagi [from the anime "Mondaiji-tachi ga isekai kara kuru sou desu yo?"] for this concept XD

As you look closer you can tell that I haven't colored the lineart like I did with the Pokemon pic. And I want to ask you: Does it look better when I'm not doing it?

Thank you all :)

You mean the question I asked on the Easter picture? I'm curious about your lineart preferences. When you zoom on the Pokemon fanart you can see that the lineart has colors on it which helps in making the character look more realistic but less distingished on the background of the whole picture. Leaving it black looks just like on my previous pics. So I don't know which way it looks better XD.

Time to finally gather my OCs in one place making them pics such as this one. When I was sixteen I wrote a huge story which contained most of them but it's pretty hard for me to ever make it a complete piece of work - the world still evolves in my head and it's not easy to read and rewrite it all over again... But I can always put them in my future creations like mangas, games etc.

And I realized that drawing and writing became something harder for me to make. It takes me much more time and I'm not submitting so often as I used to be when I begun. It's just so hard to make it an everyday habit...
Do you have simmilar problems? If yes, then you forcefully push youself forward or find some different meathods?
Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: TiNoSa on September 02, 2013, 08:28:54 PM
I think that the best word to describe your drawings is: CUTE! xD
Now I understand why you gave me that tip: you're experienced with drawings girls, hehe.
They're very beautiful and it seems you also like to draw backgrounds. And I noticed an improvement from the first to the last ones, good job!

As for what you asked...
I also think that writing is very difficult. And I noticed that drawing has become more difficult for me, too. When I started, I used to draw more full body poses, it seemed so natural for me, but then I started paying more attention to proportions, anatomy, I became more "timid", I guess.
I don't draw very freely as I used to (you know, drawing without paying much attention to mistakes). Now, when I'm drawing a finished work (not a sketch), I pay much more attention to a lot of things, spending hours on the same lineart, erasing even the tiniest mistakes that wouldn't even be visible in full view... I think the reason is that I became more perfectionist and also what you mentioned: I don't make it an everyday habit. Sometimes I spend months without drawing because I don't feel inspired or because I'm too lazy to draw decently. So I guess I kinda understand the way you feel =/

I've never tried different methods to change this, but I plan to practice more until things come more naturally for me. One of my problems is lack of inspiration and when it happens, I try to at least redraw some old sketches and improve them. Or turn sketches into linearts (which is quite a mechanic process that don't require too much inspiration). That's how I deal with this problem. But when I don't feel like drawing at all, I don't push myself, because for me, drawing needs to be something pleasurable, specially because I see the fact that I draw as a hobby, only, so when I don't want to draw, I don't force myself because I think the purpose is lost. Maybe if I were aiming to become a pro, I would try harder, but since that's not the case...

Well, that's what I think and do. I hope you can overcome these problems you've been having soon.
Good luck =)

Many thanks :). I see drawing as my hobby too so that's why I don't rush with it so much. And here's where the laziness and sometimes lack of time appears :p. It just isn't easy to be productive all the time...

It's actually scenic, Daisetsu. I love the sunset effect.
The characters' shadows seem fine by sun position. But the shading behind the large rocks can be darker, and that person sitting behind them. They also look flat.

Great work. Keep at it.

The problem im finding with this image is that there is no sense of continuity. It just feels like it is all broken and fragmented, that there is no sense of... complete "world". Most of this I find is the colour choices and contrast you have used. It looks more like someone has taken different photos and shoved them in for the background, mid ground and foreground. It is possible you are relying a little too much on texturing than proper shading to develop the scene as well.

You also come up with interesting ideas, but a lack of anatomy and proper rendering is bringing down the quality of the ideas. I would definitely have a look into some more anatomy and also into the 3D perspectives of objects so that you can better understand how they can be rendered. Otherwise, pretty cool stuff

Thanks :)

Echo_River - I was afraid that they're already too dark O.O. But thanks, I'll try to be carefull...

Demonfyre - That's right, I mainly focused on the textures especially on the rocks [it was my first time testing an effect which made them the way they look right now] so there may be something wrong with the shading.
About the whole background - you mean that only shading makes it unnatural or is there something else to it?
I still don't know what you guys mean by "lack of anatomy". Is it a about some individual parts of the body [too long, too short etc.] or what?

Here's another one:

Lack of anatomy meaning yes some parts are too short, or not properly formed.

For example, this newest one, the torso area and upper arms are on the short side and the legs could be too long, though the dress hides it. The hands seem small as well.

I like the wings. You might want to look at actual wings to get the right look.

Keep up the good work!

"About the whole background - you mean that only shading makes it unnatural or is there something else to it?"

The textures are what is making it look unnatural I reckon. Shading seems fine. You could include more contrast, but it isn't the culprit for the problem this time.

"I still don't know what you guys mean by "lack of anatomy". Is it a about some individual parts of the body [too long, too short etc.] or what?"

By lack, I mean in knowledge. As Echo above just pointed out the limbs are at varied lengths. However, if you had a better understanding of anatomy you would probably spot this error and correct it. So really what I mean is that you just need to do some more studies in anatomy to reinforce your current understanding and maybe notice a few things about the human body you didn't know before.

Good to see you Rojas :).

Yeah, that's really bad. I can't let this situation to last longer... Although I sometimes make some loose training filling the pages of white-paged notebooks with some random stuff [but nowadays not this often as I used to - so little time...]. I have a feeling that I really neglect some thing on which I should focus more [even if there are other things around me to do]

I'm liking your art the main thing i will critique is that you seem to be shading with black on your drawings. it doesn't seem to be any transition from light to dark just instant black. it may be allite advance but you should try cell shading like in this tutorial:  *link removed*

one of the rules with coloring is to never go full black or white in your paintings there are exepctions to this rule but i cant think of them right now lol

Keep up the good work :)
Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: Daisetsu-bushido on June 22, 2014, 07:11:11 AM
Thank you very much guys :)

narutogod123 - It's not just directly black on all the shading. I usually shade on 2 layers by changing colors [usually by adding +20 to S and - 20 to V in GIMP on each of the 2 layers to make it look darkened with more intense color]. And sometimes add the 3rd one on which I change the layer mode to "soft light" and color with black which makes a good darkening effect and to white to make things lighter but I use it only to make the contrast stronger.
And sometimes it really reaches the black color especially if the main color is pretty dark. I often ignored it but I guess I must be more careful with it.

And the exception you're talking about are the matal surfaces like armors. I think so :).

About cell shading - I have a tendency to smudge the shades pretty often which looks much more natural in my opinion [especially when it comes to full color works].
But I guess it would really look better on chibi characters and of course absolutely on manga comic pages. Gotta try it :). Thanks :).

More OC chibis.
This time for shading I made 3 layers which are "cell shading", "soft shading" beneath and less darkened, and a soft light layer with black and white to make the contrast stronger.
Can't really tell if it looks different than previous one but still tried to make something new.

the level of shading is a lil too much for showing such movement between the arms.

it looks like they have multiple hands.

i knwo you intended to make them like chibi, but you still need to make them more consistent.

Lorenx1 - My first time trying to do such a comedic-like movement of the arms. Didn't really knew what to do here especially with the shading so I just did it like I did the whole rest of the pic. Still need to analyze this chibi environment :).

Lego - Now I know :). Few months passed and still nothing... I even forgot about it after all this time. Don't really know much about that event for which it was all organized.

Group pics in digital just take ages to complete. Or maybe I'm just too slow...
Don't really know on what should I focus more to make it better. But it's sometimes really frustrating that it just takes so much time and I can still see that it lacks something I don't even know about.
So feel free to say if you see anything wrong or worth changing. I'd be very grateful :).

Nice colorful pic XD

I think what could be improved is the stances. Especially with the ones with the swords. They need to be in a more ready position and holding the hilt properly, otherwise it looks lie the blades are just there for show.

You did the anatomy nicely for the red fairy girl. But the arms of the centaur look on the short side.

Your pencil coloring is good and even better is your digital art.
Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: Daisetsu-bushido on August 20, 2014, 07:44:08 PM
Thanks :).

Lego - I use different kinds of pencils like HB, B [for lineart], B4 [for shading], and some of the H types to indicate some "coloring". How hard you press a certian type of pencil on the paper is also important.

DBNext - Yup, I get that feeling too :p

Took a while because of trying a completely different meathod of coloring and shading which depended mostly on playing with lineart.
Always wanted to try something from the steampunk genre. And here it is :).

New Year Rabbit :). It's the first time when I used only screentones like in manga and having in solid color only black and white. In GIMP there's a function called "Newsprint" which allows to create many patterns - very useful when you want to achieve simmilar dot patterns like in manga which can imitate tones of gray. It doesn't look so good in the background [too much gray color] but much better on the character. And of course I coudn't do any smudging so the shades are also screentones which make an effect of cell shading.
I hope you like it :).

*Looks at picture*. Oh cool they did a black and white picture... O.o... That panty shot...  I like how the hair flows but the skirt seems a bit baggy around the legs like it was purposely meant to show the panties...  I could understand that she is sitting down but on the skirt on the side of her leg it looks a little off.  Overall it looks pretty good to me though

Finally back again. This time I made something a bit different to show all the meathods of drawings I'm making on an example of a schoolgirl pic.

Traditional work made by using pencils. Often looks terrible like this one but in these types I try to focus mostly on the shading. Lineart, anatomy etc. are what ends up bad for me in this ones.

Screentoned works: It's the second time [the first was with the bunny girl] when I used screentones to get myself used to drawing japanese manga pages where solid gray tones aren't present. This effect can be achieved in GIMP by using "newsprint". Making the lineart thicker in case of characters really makes a nice effect. The problem is that I don't know if I'm using the shading right [pasting two different types of screentones on paper  beside each other seems vary hard and the dots don't always compose too good - you can see it clearly when you zoom it in on the shading areas and theis surroundings].

Colored work is still the type I draw most often :).

So these are the styles I'd probably stick with.

Nice composition Daisetsu!

The shading does help a lot in traditional works.
It's neat how much you cleaned it up in the screentoned one. That version is my favourite XD
The coloured one has a nice lighting to it.

Your style is nice. Keep it up XD

Manimal - Really? Hard to tell :p, I tried to make it look simmilar to the original but with using my techniques.

Matsui Kenshin - This isn't censorship and it was all made on purpose. I wanted to achieve a watery effect here :p

Finally  a traditional after a long time. It shows some of my character from my very first manga idea called "P.A.R.T.Y." I once wrote a whole plot here: http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,6825.0.html . 3 years past by like a moment :p.

Yesterday I launched GIMP to try some effects. After drawing a circle in the middle I came up with this.

I've drawn the eyes a bit different, colored the lineart and added some light effects. It's good to experiment sometimes :)

More serious manga training including not just screentones but also using pure blacks - the shiny effect used on black hair is called tsuya beta and by traditional meathods it can be achieved with just ink [but it's hard :P]. I made it by drawing white lines on black hair - thanks to digital techniques XD.
Drawing with blacks and whites and screentones is completely different than drawing colored works :p. But it's good to learn some new things :).

nice i really like the eyes , i think the left hand is a bit too large, the wrist joint is not very noticeable so it looks strange.
the hair has a good overall form, but i think it would look nicer with sharper end points :P
well done :P

also i know its a bit late but i noticed your screentone practice earlier, normally the screentone is at diagonals rather than straight up or straight across as you have done, because it makes the lines of dots less noticeable at an angle. just a tip for next time :P

Post by: Daisetsu-bushido on June 05, 2016, 05:45:39 PM
suupertramp - Yeah, I know about the screentones - in the new ones I can gurantee that they're all in diagonals. It just looks like it on the picture - kinda strange :P.

Sorry about my longer absence. I had to write my master's thesis for the last year at my university, so I was very busy.

Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: MahluaandMilk on July 17, 2016, 12:56:52 PM
I feel like on this latest one, you used straight lines to align the eyes, and while that seems like a good idea, the face is actually curved, so you wound up making the eye on the left look a little too low. Other than that, most everything else seems okay, especially how you managed to shade the crossing lace up the front of the dress.

Gogo Marz - I guess it's just my style :P. I didn't really think about their age to tell the truth :P

Now something a bit different:

I'm curious about what you think about so called "weeaboos" and the problem of felling in love with fiction. In this work I wanted to show an example [hope it's not too extreme] of how I see such love - when people go too far with their imaginations and drifting too far away from reality.
I think manga [in this case just anime styled drawiong] is also a form of art. And art is meant to show a message. And this is my attempt in doing so. I hope you like it :).
Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: GreenTrap on May 12, 2017, 12:43:16 PM
I think it's a case by case basis. Some people can find new friends, travel the world and gain employment through anime and manga. Others can have their reality warped by it to differing degrees. I can't really say since anime and manga is more a secondary hobby to me. My housemates are bigger fans.

But people measure their happiness in different ways. As long as they aren't harming others, they can do what they want in my opinion.

Nice art by the way. Though I'm curious as to why there is a city in the background?

Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: Daisetsu-bushido on May 13, 2017, 01:55:40 PM
GreenBeverage - Well said. I guess it all depends on individual views. People are different and also devote to their hobbies in their own individual ways. But as long as they don't harm anyone I also think that they can do what they want. Thanks for the comment :).
About the city in the background - cities are often associated with busy places where most jobs are located. This kind of city landscape in my opinion represents the reality best. In contrast I added the colorful landscape representing the world of imagination. People often want to run away from their busy lives and seek relief in fiction. But there are some people who can fell in love with fiction and forgets about the reality - weeaboos as an example. In this artwork I wanted to show that problem in todays society. The problem of distinguishing between reality and fiction.

Walter B - Thanks :). If any good idea will come to mind I'll definitely try to show it on a picture.

Time goes so fast O.O. Some time ago I was busy making a manga chapter for one of Polish internet magazines - that's why I didn't draw anything in color for some time :P. And drawing the whole thing always consumes a lot of time. Usually one page can consume 6-7 hours but it mostly depends on how detailed the page is and how fast can you draw. So, when you're slow like me, 10 pages can take you even a month :P.
Some time ago I also tried a new graphic software called MediBang Paint Pro also known as Jump Paint [both of them look the same :P]. Here's the effect:

Don't know if I'll stick with it when it comes to colored works but I think it's worth a try for screentoned works and manga pages - has a lot of potential for these ones :).

It kinda looks like you forgot which side the thumb is supposed to go on on the hand coming towards the viewer, so the thumb and the pinky both kinda look like thumbs, lol.
No biggie.

The colors are really vibrant and pop a lot. I'd just suggest keeping the little details in mind when you're working with color so that you don't accidentally make the piece too busy or hard on the eyes with too few places to rest.

Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: suuper-san on July 01, 2018, 04:38:32 PM
pretty awesome. I prefer the black and white to the previous color one, but that might be my bias anyway. looks like you are definitely getting used to it as you say.

I assume the chess pieces (thanks for pointing that out Walter) are made of wood? if not then this is embarrassing. i recognized its a wood texture so its definitely not bad, but often the lines of wood run for much longer, and often wobble as they go around what were branches and stuff on the tree, leaving knots behind as the little circles you see. I recommend drawing a few circles/ovals and then drawing lines lengthways along the object, curving so you miss the circles. with every next line, try and miss the previous line so the wobbles become rather soft. Google "wood cartoon" or even "wood manga" to get some great reference points for simplification, or use real wood as a reference and try and copy that. Or use a wood texture which would look awesome.

I too am curious to what is going on, though :P

Just two quick questions about that piece, if you don't mind. Which way is the body supposed to be facing, and how do the shoulders connect to it? It might just be that the dress is really obscuring my view, but it's visually confusing to me.

Finally I managed to make another steampunk themed work :). This time spying fairies with light bubbles attacking the Cogwealth sisters, Amelia and Amy [my OCs] :P.
Colors done mostly by using the oil paint brush in MediBang - that's why it looks a bit chaotic - wanted to achieve something different than solid flat colors.

Hope you like it :)

Lovely piece and lovely steampunk :P
I think using the brush came out well, more like a painting than your usual works. maybe a bit more time with a smaller size brush will help to add more details and sharpen it up a little, but keeping the overall brushy feel. The background is very simple though, it should be nice to have a bit of scenery to make the piece feel more real. good job and keep it up.
Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: MahluaandMilk on October 30, 2018, 04:47:39 PM
Chaotic is a word for sure, but I'd go for "scratchy", which pairs really well with a steampunk theme, especially if it's a futuristic steampunk where all the copper and metals have been used for so long. I think the weakest bit is probably that the smoke/steam lacks its own depth. If there were a few more values added into it, it'd really pull the piece together. Right now, it's sitting there looking kinda flat, y'know? But I have to agree, the oil brush did a good job here, especially with the hair.

Many thanks. I really should focus more on details and depth I think. For the smoke, I made it on just one layer with one brush - looks like it wasn't enough.

it takes a lot of time to get added details as you have to be a lot more careful and thorough. I always get impatient and want to finish the piece so I know it can be hard moving to a higher quality level :P

lovely Halloween one. cute little hat accessories :P

patience is indeed the key. the more time you spend on a piece, the more of your skill you allow to show (that being said I never do that , ever, haha)

nice gear and cog piece.
I'll always love a steampunk piece.
the dark cloudy shapes at the bottom are the shadows? it would look better if they have less blur nearer the characters feet where it is cast from, as thats how blurry shadows work :P
but overall well done and very cool piece :)

Ok guys, I decided to change my software.
From now on I'll be working with Clip Studio Paint EX which I bought on Black Friday Sale :)
For now it looks great and has many features which I always used in Gimp and MediBang. I'll also use it in my future manga/comic projects because it has a lot of helpful options dedicated for comic creators.
And the drawing above is the result of playing with various options and learning how things work in the program :).

Good on you, man. I probably should've tried to invest in a new program, but it seems like a lot of programs these days work on subscriptions. Man, I don't want a subscription, I just want a disc with a program that I can use as-is forever. But I'm just old-fashioned, I suppose. My current art program (Krita) has given me so many headaches that I've pretty much quit digital art until I can find something better. I'm glad that the switch has worked out well for you! And everything about it is still very you.

Do you have any suggestions for a different hosting site?

shame.
Not knowing the site name, I nearly had a heart attack that a MR member called Tinypic had died!!!!
I use https://imgur.com/ which seems ok

incidentally I have a backup of each page of my art topic on my computer. Just pressing Ctrl-S on most browsers will let you save the page as a .html with all your images, which can help in working out which images went where if you were going to reupload or something, and helps keep a record of your progress as well. but it's probably not incredibly useful.

How do you draw the buildings? the brick textures and whatnot look really nice!
Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: Daisetsu-bushido on September 15, 2019, 03:36:27 PM
Thanks :)
About the buildings - I usually start from a solid color which contains the whole mass of the structure. Then depending on the colors, I think about the materials and give them a suitable texture - for bricks I added a separate layer on which I experimented with brushes. For this one I chose 'crayon' in Clip Studio Paint and colored with a darker shade taken from the base color.
Then I devided the bricks with darker lines and added some lines indicating the edges which reflects most of the lights.
The rest are the effects added for the whole picture like gradients of light, color effects etc. Sometimes there's a lot of it and I end up with dozens of layers @.@ - so It's good to divide them into folders like 'characters', 'background 1st plan', 'background 2nd plan' etc. Saves a lot of time while searching all the layers to find these lines or dots which you want to correct/erase :).
Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: suuper-san on September 15, 2019, 03:53:19 PM
awesome, that's super useful. I might try and do that whenever I work on backgrounds next. I've done a little bit of texture work but I need more brush practice, and making my own brushes as well is something I'd like to try as well :)
Title: Re: Daisetsu's works
Post by: Coryn on September 15, 2019, 06:26:46 PM
Speaking of background, I love the attention to detail on the masonry of the building (engineer bursting forth, 3...2...1!) The fact that the brickwork is in sync with the window is a small bit of detail that a lot of people are going to miss with backgrounds (Hitler, for instance, (*censored*ing loser)). You're architecture is always going to be based on a logical manner. You're never going to see fixtures start in the middle of a layer of bricks. They need something solid to sit on! It's a completely logical thing. One stone weighs on top of the next! Don't get lost in any one detail. See the forest through the trees.

Sometimes that happens. it's much better to play around with new ideas than to stay exactly where you are, and sometimes it takes a while for new methods to get properly integrated, or perhaps it's a method or style that we eventually decide that we dont like, but definitely keep trying new stuff. I think it looks great all the same.

wow that's seriously good. so much detail and stuff.
I love all the light flecks and the lighting and shading is pretty awesome, especially on the hood and cape.
I personally wouldn't say the lighting is "vibrant", as I would expect more of a coloured light source, like yellow or something, whereas your piece seems a little low on contrast I think (maybe it's just my own definition of vibrant). I think maybe because all the colours are quite similar perhaps? Definitely a bright light, and the shading matches the light source well.
lovely background and the little glow around the characters too.

but really great overall, this must have taken ages to draw!!
Title: Re: Daisetsu's works

Great stuff! There's just something about that whole color scheme that reminds me of Christmas lights hung up in my room as a child. It's got that nice soft glow you get when the only thing on is the string of Christmas lights around your ceiling (too ultra specific maybe?)

This also reminds me that I really have no idea what's happening in the world of Madoka these days. How did one 12 episode show become such a long epic when I wasn't looking?

suuper-san - Yeah, it took quite a long time :P. Colored works are always very time consuming - especially the detailed ones ;(.
Coryn - Interesting thoughts about Christmas lights - didn't really think about it. Right now Madoka is much more than just 12 episodes - especially that Magia Record with Iroha is now ongoing. Always loved this uniqueness of Puella Magi - altering the whole mahou shoujo genre and showing it in a much more serious and dark theme.

had no idea that Madoka had expanded into more stuff. I remember a film came out, or 2 films or something. I never saw them though haha. It was a pretty interesting story, plus the art shifts in it were huge.

Love the flower in the hat, the hair detail and the fire effect in that last one. and yes the black really makes it pop.
