Title: Sai, Photoshop, Manga studio: what program do you use?
Post by: Corycaly on March 01, 2011, 02:56:34 PM
What programs do you use? When  you like using them ?

I like Manga studio for the easy inking you can do with it and the tones it gives.

Photoshop is good for colors but I find it difficult to use for inking

Gimp: I will not ever use it anymore since it messed up all my pictures

What programs do you use?

I use Paint.net, but that's just because of the lack of Photoshop/Manga Studio on my computer. I'm too cheap to buy 'em.

I use Paint tool sai for both sketching, lineart and clouring.

I find it a really fun freely software, and you got the nessesary tools to create what you want, maybe something is easier with photoshop and illustrator, but all the tools you need to create something similar is in sai, it just needs some layer techniques and stuff to make the same outcome.

I use manga studio for my panel works, I find it easier for average exppresionism and panel construction, and generally nice to create whole mangas. I will still draw in Paint tool sai though.

I never understood how to use Sai T__T

Manga studio is great for inking, tones, and coloring even if I haven't tested all its color tools possibilities.

They are very close to each other.

About inking, i like sai alot better though, it has some cool vector feature to the curve tool and the pen tool.

Does SAI works well with a pen tablet?

Yes it does, basicly made for that purpose.

i use illustrator for all lineart and for vector coloring, sometimes i use photoshop with a tablet for different coloring styles....

For me, it depends on the look I want. I use Sai mostly because of the ease of production but opencanvas is great for sketching. When I want a painted look, I mostly rely on Photoshop. For vector art, I use mostly Flash because I haven't learned how to use Illustrator yet.

Photoshop and Sai make a kick ass duo, but I really really dream of the day i become pro in vector art with Inkscape and Illustrator.

I use Photoshop for my more detailed works and works that take longer to finish. (Not always the same thing, believe me)

I love Sai for its more simpler feel and use it for basic sketches to character outlines (unshaded work)

As for vector art i have no use for it yet, since i'm still learning.

Yes, yes they do, but when you have a laggy pc like mine, it takes 10 minutes to load up a picture made in sai into photoshop xD
So i try to only use Sai, and photoshop for backgrounds if its something i cant do well in sai xD

Photoshop: Tried using it and failed...it was way to complex for me >.>

Sai: LOVE<3 It's great for making mulitple kinds of brushes. I love the colors it makes, as well as the option to use: markers, pen, oil, water color, etc. It also has textured paper (At least Paint Tool SAI does, I'm not sure about the other versions ^^;;) and canvas texture too.

GIMP: Another love of mine<3 After I miserably failed with Photoshop, I found GIMP, and used it for a lot of things. I like how I can do lineart and signatures on it easily.

Paint (Windows 7): I'm still getting used to Paint, it's a lot different than the Windows XP version, so this might take some time xDD

Photoshop + SAI ftw~~

I've used PS the most (but for other things), so I guess I'm the most familiar with it, but I love SAI for sketching~
I wanna try painting with them, but...I kinda suck at it._____.
I don't have MangaStudio but my bro does.....I don't really like it for some reason..
As for GIMP, tried it, but wasn't used to it, and the file compatibility was weird.D:

I mostly use photoshop but recently tried manga studio. MS is actually pretty good, but with a huge setback by turning your simple activities into a complicated puzzle. You must literally gottta see 'outside the box' in order to get around easily.

As of yet, I'm using Photoshop for standard B/W art, but I tend to use Illustrator for color art, because I really do prefer vector graphics when dealing with color...

I'm not a very good artist yet, though...

I use Manga Studio EX 4.0. I just got it a few days ago so I'm still learning everything, so I don't really know what I'll be using it for. But I have created some pretty decent drawings from scratch on it (lines are still a little shaky, using a graphics tablet takes some getting used to!).

I mainly use SAI nowadays, it's easy and intuitive to use and I like the interface better. I use Photoshop for some hardcore editing and some other larger projects like poster design but now I rarely use Photoshop.

I experimented with Painter 11 too, it's kinda hard to use so I left it....

I use Paint tool Sai for sketching, coloured photos, etc.
I have Manga studio, and i'll use it if i ever need to ink/tone a drawing, or make a manga page!

I used to use Open Canvas for coloring, but while I still have it, I use Sai for everything, inking and coloring. It's a lot more sensitive and I feel a lot more free with Sai. I also use Manga Studio EX sparingly for small digital inked projects, because I can't stand using it for long periods of time because it feels too differently than traditional, and it frustrates me because they aim for it to be like traditional, but I don't feel it at all.
Title: Re: Sai, Photoshop, Manga studio: what program do you use?

I've always used Manga Studio Debut 4.0, Photoshop, and Illustrator, it's my signature combo!

Recently, I was able to purchase Manga Studio EX at an insanely discounted offer! And I'm loving it!

Vector layers, superior tone control, IMPORTING 3D OBJECTS AND RENDERING THEM RIGHT THERE WITH ACTUAL 3D TOOLS, and godly perspective tools.

Manga Studio EX is one beast of a program for drawing comics. Any coloring/painting is done in Photoshop though, both Debut and EX are poop when it comes to painting.

Painter 12 - my favourite drawing program, nothing beats it in texture, drawings also look natural as opposed to digitally looking etc, I don't use it for cel-shade stuff though.
Photoshop CS3 - for cel-shade and all other quirky things, like formating, typefaces, placing shapes and logos into illustrations
Inkscape - used to make logos and designs intended to be scaled and placed into illustrations (opensource program like illustrator)
Manga Studio 4 EX - toning mainly, oddly I prefer Painter 12 to ink with over MS, I'm trying to convert though  :D
Sai - for random doodles and warmups, it's stupid fast!

I also use Xpadder and DS3 Tool so I can use Sony's Playstation Nav controller as a tool selector, like D-Pad UP = zoom in, D-Pad DOWN = zoom out, analogue stick controls brush size, home button is ctrl+s, L2 Trigger is eyedropper tool and L1 is move tool, etc.  :D :D

Played around with manga studio, its fun but i have yet to draw ANYTHING that looks half way what i want it to. Am i able to open files in MS so i can ink them and add then to the panles?

You can go to File > Import to open files into MS for inking, at least that's what I do (I use Image).

Mangastudio is standard software for B&W work ,i use it as a main program to finish manga work but you still need to use Photoshop to do final retouch and add some text.
CG software that i use is illust studio , fully link with mangastudio with all tool that nesesary for CG painting.

It seems a lot of people here use Manga Studio ^^
I don't get along well with it, but sometimes I use it because of some brushes it has (Kabura and G Pen), which allow you to make a nice lineart with noticeable pen pressure if you have a tablet. I just don't like the eraser very much, it erases differently if compared to Photoshop's eraser, which I'm more used to.

My favorite software for doing everything (sketching, lineart, coloring, editing) is Photoshop Elements 8. Althought I believe it's meant for photo editing, it's very similar to CS versions of PS, but it lacks some functions (gifs, pen tool and advanced brush properties, for example). But considering my linearts are made by hand, and not vectors, the pen tool is not necessary in my case, and when I'm not experimenting with different styles of coloring which would require a custom brush, I use the basic solid brush, so it's not a problem to cel shade =)

I also use other programs, but less frequently. Anyway, Photoshop Elements is my favorite and I'm very used to it's interface already :D

@ Tino Photoshop elements huh. I guess in the end different people use different software.

I used to use GIMP, but now I use FireAlpaca... I like FireAlpaca a lot better. It's supposed to be a lot like Sai, and it's... FREE! xD

I only use free programs right now... I didn't want to buy a  program until I got a drawing tablet. Which I got one this year! :3

Now I want Sai and Manga Studio. ^-^

I use SAI. I just love its pen pressure and simple interface. Feels very smooth.

I like certain tools CS6 has but for some reason I don't like its interface and brush tool.

I like Clip Studio Paint, it seems like a combination of the good things of SAI and PS. But I'm still *censored*ty at drawing I'm not sure whether I should get it or not D:

I've never heard of Clip Studio Paint. When you say 'get it' do you mean buy it?  You may be better off just using freeware software. Unless paying for it will motivate you to take it more seriously...

I use gimp. Photoshop CS2 was a nice thing to fall back to. And I know of one mordern artist who uses it to amazing effect. But my harddrive was too full to support it.

It's like a downloadable version for Manga Studio and yeah it costs money. The motivation part is what kept me from buying it lol. Maybe after a year or two of practice I'll be able to convince myself that I can utilize that thing efficiently xD

I use Photoshop most often, mainly cause of the brush customizing, but later I started buying brushes other people made too, they are better then mine most of the time, and off course after buying those brushes I kinda just stick to photoshop after ^3^
I also started learning Clip studio paint, apparently the next generation of manga studio, so far has been great, but I haven't get used to it yet, didn't anything to share that's mad in clip studio :P

Clip studio paint is, as far as I've been told, exactly the same as manga studio except targeted at Japanese artists.
Also, MS is great for making manga (XD really?) but CSP is more for individual pictures and illustrations.

I'm not completely sure about this, please don't shoot me, it's just what I've seen from speedpaints and other artists' work

You could do that easily in photoshop.
Just takes alot of of tinkering and knowledge on what the settings do. I know. I use to work in photoshop in my youth. Sai is nice, I enjoy it for quick sketches every now and then.
The colouring is basic enough to get things speedy and fast.

Manga studio 5 has the most in what I'm looking for. So I focus primarily on it.

And Clip Studio Paint is the digital download.

I use Manga Studio.

Totally agree, line art I would use MS. Illustrator is the best for total vector drawings though. Really graphic stuff with no line art. I barely even use the pen tool actually, I like the blob tool, works so well with a tablet!~

What version of PS do you have? Photoshop CC has mixer brush tool, which does blend while painting.

I'm using SAI when sketching digitally, because it's a light program so i can work on bigger resolution without lag. For inking and coloring, Manga Studio works best for me  :D And it's a must for drawing full pages, since i can't draw tones by myself  ::)

For Illustrating/Digital Art . . . I use SAI and photoshop combo. I've been using SAI since the very moment I started doing digital art so It's my comfort zone so it's hard for me to change the software I've been used to.

I tried using Manga Studio and Clip Studio Paint but I gave up since I don't understand the interface.
