Title: Improved?
Post by: zioxiezhai on December 08, 2010, 04:04:59 PM
So, I'm trying to get a manga published. But of course there is a problem...MY ART STINKS. Its okay at pulling off chibi style and such. But not good enough for publishing. Below are some characters (Not the one in my manga, but just to give an idea of my skill) hopefully you can give me some tips and advice?

Also, I'm really sorry if you can't see it clearly. I think it was the scanner. But it might've been me. It was probably me.

These images were from a scraped idea since the story didn't go very far.

welcome to mangaraiders! why don't you go to the welcome center and introduce yourself!

as for your artwork there isnt too much to tell you. it's a practice makes perfect situation really. i would suggest studying manga in the style that you're going for and try to replicate it. from there you can start to craft your own style.

You're a fan of soul eater aren't you hehe ?

I agree with Coryn , you should practice, practice and practice.
Study anatomy, how proportions are laid , try to copy some interesting perspectives drawn by well known manga authors.

I believe it's still early before you publish a manga, not to discourage you or anything. But your drawing need to be "almost" perfect.

You're starting good :) , especially that you're willing to post your art and ask for guidance.
Keep it up pal :D

I'd say that you should draw ten pages of fanart (Copycat style (not tracing!)). You're 14 so I guess that there's not much homework to be done = you've got the time to do it.
You should doodle in class too.
Prolly you should go to deviant art and search for some proportion tutorials.
Watch some ecchi it'll help
Title: Re: Help, my manga looks weird...
Post by: zioxiezhai on December 09, 2010, 09:36:11 AM
Yeah I do doodle a lot. But it still keeps getting the same result. I will check out ecchi and keep practicing. Thanx for the advice!
Title: Re: Help, my manga looks weird...
Post by: Fallen Kite on December 09, 2010, 11:57:13 AM
But still, be serious when you doodle. Oh, and one thing that might or might not help you is to think for yourself what could be done better. Then redraw  it all (not fixing unless it's a small issue). And don't hesitate to look at your own body ;)

There goes Kite again, letting 14-year old kids watch ecchi.

Not that I don't do that. >_>'

Anyhow, your art's fine, except it's kinda stiff. Perhaps you should start working with skeletons, that way you can create good poses and build your characters around them. You could also learn a thing or two about proportions, although that might just be because it's chibi.
Title: Re: Help, my manga looks weird...
Post by: zioxiezhai on December 09, 2010, 05:07:36 PM
Uh, I found out what ecchi is, and I just realised that my mom was behind me the whole time...

Anyway, I did notice its quite chibi. I'm going to try to get it more serious. >:)

But not too serious, I don't want to make another death note....
Title: Re: Help, my manga looks weird...
Post by: Fallen Kite on December 09, 2010, 06:42:40 PM
Btw, shouldn't this topic be moved to the art section r something? o_o''

And.. you don't know what ecchi is? Start of with Love Hina
And Toasty's right about the proportion thing, but it takes time and can't be learned from one day to another

Hi.

I see your are somewhat new at it, so i would suggest that you trace 1 or two drawings (By tracing i dont mean drawing on the lines with some paper you can look through, just look and copy). and thoughout the process, look at the lines, what do they tell you? and why are they placed how they are.

e.g Why are that fold there?  Howcome the shoulder is placed there?  howcome the arm is thin in that pose?

Try to compare it to human anatomy, and look at the traced picture again. did you make it entirely correct? and what is not correct.

After this, try to look at another picture. and draw that picture, but not tracing it, make another pose, another perspective, maybe other cloths.

(Please note, do NOT claim traced pictures as your own. so dont bother uploading em)

and dont ever make tracing a habbit, then you end up screwing your drawings in the future by memorizing what you traced long time ago.

anyways. after this, it would be a good idea to look at anatomy toturials (Which im really really bad at myself! xD) and then move onto posing toturials.

This is a really, really good place to practice drawing. I'm sure if you do this reguraly each day you'll have results within the month:

I started going through lots of tutorials for manga over the internet and practiced and practiced over them. So here are the results! TA-DA! My scanner wasn't running so I had to use the Iphone :(.

I had to merge your new and old topics because each member can have only one topic per Art Board.

About your drawings I think you have improved but yet you need to work on body anatomy. That is the hardest thing.

Oh thanks.
Title: Re: Improved?
Post by: Coryn on January 01, 2011, 05:49:16 PM
not a bad start but one big problem you seem to be having is simple anatomy. your characters are really stick like. theres no curves or anything. i would suggest looking up some tutorials on how to just draw a basic human body.
Title: Re: Improved?
Post by: Corycaly on January 05, 2011, 02:47:27 PM
The drawings are not bad but you can imrpove them by using the circles method. Sketch quickly your characters using rectangles and circles before adding more details. It will help to improve your drawings! Keep drawing!

Agree with Dawood, the legs for the girl are nicely designed. However, the legs for everyone is awkwardly proportioned. It looks like they're on stilts.

Everytime I tried to make them (The legs) shorter they look young :/ so I don't know how to fix that... Any ideas? Also the body always turn out small....
Title: Re: Improved?
Post by: Tostificer on January 30, 2011, 04:42:37 PM
You should look at the anatomy of male human bodies. The features that make one older or younger are usually the shoulders, since the legs are usually very short.
Title: Re: Improved?
Post by: zioxiezhai on May 10, 2011, 11:16:39 AM
I was wondering, is it the longer the shoulders the older they are? Or is it the shorter they are?
Title: Re: Improved?
Post by: Iris on November 03, 2011, 03:27:08 PM
nice drawings, and I think I would do it by how tall they are and how you want the rest of their body to look like; and male shoulders are broader than female ones

Guess who's back? XD

So I have left and brought myself a tablet and some serious anatomy practice. Well sort of. Here are some pictures, please give more improvements so I can become a better artist and thanks for all the advice already!

It sure does look like you've improved! You might know this already but when the arm is hanging down loosely the elbow is usually located at the bottom of the rib cage/near the navel. In order to get a feel for the elbow location of different arm poses, use arching lines as guidelines for the arms at the elbow and hand locations.
Title: Re: Improved?
Post by: Corycaly on June 20, 2012, 01:01:50 PM
It's better bit there are some corrections to make: the girl "praying" has a mistake in the eyes: they aren't symetrical, the  girl at the top right corner has a too long neck. The boy/man head in profile at the left has a problem: the ear and the skull need to be corrected.
The girl who has her hands in her hips is great but one eye is strange.

It's not that bad, keep working!

The characters remind me of a story i tried to begin and stopped writing. They look interesting, that's for sure, and i love the sketchiness, for now i guess you should get used to using guidelines and be able to consistently draw the same height of each character using the head-body ratio

Work on your jaw lines. They are usually curved and dropped down lower than what you have see reference for example.

There are some mistakes here and there... Xd
Again thanks for the advice again! I hope I fixed the chin thing. But now it's ears, the sizes NOOOOO!!! XD
Title: Re: Improved?
Post by: FleetingMischief on October 19, 2012, 02:06:25 PM
I always find it easy to place the ears either by copying a particular style of someone. Some people level it with the eyes, some people a bit higher and some people a bit lower. Try finding an art style that you like where the ears are placed and mimic that.

If you don't like that, what I do currently is imagine if I'm putting glasses on my characters, but I have a decent sense of mass and solidity in my work. So if I put glasses and rest them on the ears of my characters the glasses should be able to cover the eyes.

Hope this helps!

If you can keep changing one aspect of your drawings to be better each time you post something, like when you fixed the jaw, you will become better a lot faster than people who keep doing the same mistakes over and over!

Unfortunately, I'm no artist, so really, I can only comment on your improvement. And I must say, looking at all the pictures, it's like watching a linear progression where as time goes on, quality goes up. You know, like a line graph.

Aside from that, you're also showing that you have a style all your own with the artwork. It doesn't look like it's similar to any published artwork I've seen, but it's still obvious that it's a style of manga. Again, I'm lower than a noob when it comes to artwork, so this is really I can say that's worth mentioning.

Yup, looking at your first ones and the newest once I can tell that there's huge improvement with the details of the drawing - especially when looking at that armor. And the head from the side view got much better too.
I'd reccomend to focus a bit more on shading and lineart. But still don't forget about the anatomy [it looks much better in the newest pics but there's still no way to improve without mastering it].
Good luck!

So it's been about a year! Kind of? A little less. So where have I been? I properly started art university now; the animation course is pretty brutal but I'm learning a lot! Still not enough though haha.

Kind of curious to see the difference between the first post I made on here. Which was six whole years ago! That's crazy. So I re-drew it and all.

Hi all! Me again. Only been a few months but thought I pop in again to bury something into the capsule lol.

The bad news is that schoolwork is swamping me with so much work, it's tough to do personal stuff these days sigh sigh. The good news is that with so much work, there's a lot to show!

Hopefully once I can get some break in order, I might actually do that thing I wanted to do all those years ago and draw a comic manga thing.
