Title: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Corycaly on July 22, 2010, 01:17:48 PM
I began formatting the anthology but many stories have problems regarding the spaces, alineas and general page setting.

Here is a quick explaination to present correctly your stories and pages, along with an example. Those rules are used in most of the books you can find on libraries, such as Harry Potter or Stephen King books for example.

The number of pages needing to be corrected is too important so it's necessary that each author makes the necessary corrections. Please use this page template so there won't be any problem with the printer:
http://www.comixpress.com/templates/CP_DigestPage_JPG.jpg
You can send the corrected pages to mr.artworksPLZ READ RULES NO EMAIL ADDRESSES.com.

Here is a model page I made using the printer's template. In case the page doesn't work, I detailed it .

.dialogues: you don't jump lines between two different speaking characters, you just go at the next line.
Incorrect
- "I hate blablabla", says Corycaly.

- "Me too", answers her dad.

Correct:
- "I hate blablabla", says Corycaly.
- "Me too", answers her dad.

. Paragraphs
You don't jump lines between paragraphs except if another scene begins. If the paragraphs belong to the same scene, you just go at the next like.
Incorrect
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla

hihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihi

. Alineas
You put an alinea at the beginning of each chapter only.

To make short: you jump a line only between two scenes, an alinea only at the beginning of the chapter.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 22, 2010, 01:23:27 PM
first question. what the hell is an alinea?
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Tostificer on July 22, 2010, 01:29:12 PM
Oh, might that be a European thing? Let me see...

An alinea is a piece of text. You seperate it using double spacing, or with a tab. Like:

blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla.

       blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla
blablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablablabla.

The bold piece is an alinea.

so wait. is what you're trying to say is not indent things then?
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Corycaly on July 22, 2010, 01:35:16 PM
An aline is a space you add at the beginning of a line.
Like this:
               aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES

Oh? I learnt differently... Anyway, listen to Cory. She knows what she's talking about.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 22, 2010, 01:40:36 PM
right. we call that an indentation or indent. but the thing is your supposed to indent the beginning of each new paragraph. its how you tell one paragraph from another and is one of the fundamental rules of writing English. and really its the opposite of what you said to do. you dont indent the starting paragraph but you indent the rest. so with that in mind all you really need to say is for everyone to submit in single spaced.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: legomaestro on July 22, 2010, 01:54:41 PM
... okay, then. Have to work on this. Hopefully i won't get confused
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 22, 2010, 01:56:44 PM
hm... give me some time and i'll post an example here so things make more sense. though for the people writing script its really just a matter of single spacing
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 22, 2010, 02:25:10 PM
so some examples of both script and novel forms.

SCRIPT:

TITLE

*ttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
tttttttttt*
        *hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhh*
Character 1 - "blablablablablablablablabla"
Character 2 - "dadadadadadadadadadada"
      *ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
gggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
ggggggggggggggggg*

NOVEL:

TITLE

tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
tttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
tttttttttttttttt
      hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh "hahaha
hahahahhahaha"
"dadadadadaadada"
"bababababababaaba"
      ggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg
ggggggggggggg "yayayayayayyaya" gggg
gggggggggg.

so if that doesnt make sense say something and i'll actually post something written not just random letters.

I almost skipped this topic thinking it had nothing to do with me, that was close. Wait though, in script format you use paragraphs? That's...wait...I don't...gahh!!! It's just getting a little confusing for me now.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 22, 2010, 02:57:41 PM
let me clear that up. if you're going to have a long description you'll probably want to break it up into different paragraphs. not only that if you indent the descriptions it will help set them apart from the dialogue. the problem is that there are no real grammatical rules applying to scripts. so really if all you want to do is single space the script style you already have it will work but wont be as pretty on the eyes.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Account Disabled on July 22, 2010, 03:01:10 PM
Ah, so I can just indent the descriptions? Makes sense, and it would help. Easy to do, but what about that template Cory posted a link to? I'm not exactly sure how that works, or at least how to use it or set it up so my words won't be too close to the trim.

Oh, it's simple. Let me try.

GoGoKuri by Tostificer

First scene:
       (Alinea)First Paragraph
Second paragraph (No double spacing, no alinea)
Third paragraph (No double spacing, no alinea) etc

Second scene (Double spacing, no alinea):

Guys plz stick to what Cory said in Open post. This takes too much time and publishing goes over the deadline.

@ Coryn : Make a topic about this, discuss this and come to a conclusion, So we can include these in next Antho. I had told Cory to tell you to make a topic about this but I didn't see it happen so I asked Cory to post rules.

Everyone just follow the open post and create your pages. and submit them. This takes too much time that I'd expected.

I'm kind of confused for my script format story then, I ended up indenting anything that wasn't dialogue to make it easier to read, but I'm not sure if that's correct or not. I'm really regretting not writing this in novel format.

EDIT: So Hasith posted and now I'm not exactly understanding this. I guess I'll indent the first paragraph only? Ugh, script is a curse I tell you!
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: [aero] on July 22, 2010, 03:27:25 PM
argh this is all wrong!

time for some standard MLA formatting
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/

as for the page size are we expected to export our word documents into a pdf or jpeg file so accommodate the printing company or what?

as for hasith's comment... what did you expect when writers are told to change their formatting, along with file type and size restrictions?
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Hasith on July 22, 2010, 03:28:57 PM
Litt. Just forget the whole thing and stick with what Cory said in first post. xDD

If you don't understand what she says, then ask her to explain to part you didn't get.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 22, 2010, 03:30:20 PM
@ hasith - co never told me to make a topic about this she just told me she would be making a topic about this. i'll make a different topic though so i can better explain things. and you can trust that it will start with the scanning of a book that was written in english and published in english so that there can be no question to what is the correct way.

so for the record. for this anthology just do as co says to.  its wrong but i'm tired of arguing this point for now. and remember that you should be single spacing everything. unless there is a scene change in which case you should make a single double space between the two scenes.

also would somebody please tell me if we're expected to format our stories into a picture form cause i still have no idea how to do that.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Account Disabled on July 22, 2010, 03:32:41 PM
I see, well for my story there are no large change of scenes and so spacing isn't necessary for that part, so I simply indent the first paragraph and then perhaps change it into a picture file. Makes sense, even if it sounds questionable.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: [aero] on July 22, 2010, 03:33:52 PM
i still think there needs to be an indent at the beginning of every paragrpah...

as for picture files i think it would be easiest to make em into .pdf files
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Hasith on July 22, 2010, 03:35:29 PM
@ [aero] : simple. I'v only expected just everyone to follow what Coryclay said in OP and get your pages done according to it.

discuss what's right whats wrong in other topic which I asked Coryn to make. and It will has nothing to do with this issue. I want to get this publish as soon as possible. save all argument about formatting to this Topic which Coryn will make.

well theres the regular MR anthology which has its own section as i think you know. which is an anthology for fully illustrated manga. this is for the writers anthology which is for those writers who either dont have an artist or would just also like to publish their stories in text form

And I'm very sorry Hasith, I'm still so new and all... Please don't get that in a bad way!
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Corycaly on July 22, 2010, 03:56:56 PM
Do not worry Tostifer lol

The anthology's first goal is that everybody learns how to make his or her own publishing project. It means that every artist or writer is responsable of their own projects. Hasith and me are in charge of putting the pages together and sending them to the printer.

Of course, it means a little work for the writers and artists but it provides more experience than having me formating the whole anthology.

For now, we will stick with the rules I set.  They may change in the next anthology projects but not now.

I'm making another topic about sending the files which will include the format (jpeg etc etc) you can use and how to make them.

You just  have to respect the anthology rules. We are currently working on the writers anthology and the third mangaraiders anthology which includes manga stories and art gallery.

I have made a quick tutorial so you can transform your pages into jpeg files.

well all of my pages are now formated and everything. all in all it ended up as four pages. which makes me kinda depressed. was really hoping to do it in three or five. oh well.

though when i did a test print the pages were real low quality even though everything was to the specified settings. but i guess my printer wasnt designed for that sort of thing.

Quick question: my story is in script form, but that seems like a hassle to format, can I put it in novel form and format it?
It wouldn't be hard or time consuming really.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Fnnenn Enninn on July 23, 2010, 03:35:30 AM
Also to clear up a bit of confusion, it's <read below> for formatting right?

-No double spacing. Double spacing is only to be used between scenes.
-Only Indent (alinea) at the start of the chapter, no where else.

Not what I'm used to, but I can work with that, I think I read works like that before, like Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke, I think she wrote like that too.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: [aero] on July 23, 2010, 04:20:04 AM
indent at the beginning of a paragraph, otherwise you get a wall of text
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Fnnenn Enninn on July 23, 2010, 04:32:08 AM
I know that's the standard and how things are meant to be written (and walls of text aren't pleasant looking) but Hasith said just go with the OP's description, and that's what it said, so no point in me arguing, I have bigger problems then the awful appearance of text walls (Onemanga, NOOOOOOOO!).

I just want to know, is what I said previously, what was asked in the beginning, whether or not it's proper?

Also, before I start to format, I need to find out if I can change to Script format for the Anthology, so a speedy reply would be appreciated. I'll have lots of time to do changes in a few days when I'm at my mothers for a month.

Oh yea, I already know where the formatting tutorial is, but I want to know if I can change my story to Novel, since I submitted the story in Script?
Hm, maybe it's better if I say "Can I use novel format, even though I submitted a script style story" Because I can change it up into novel and it would look much nicer.

well changing the story from script to novel would be a long and difficult process if you want to do it right and we are trying to get this done as soon as possible.  but really you can just submit script for this anthology and change to novel for the next one.

You can send the files in a compressed version, no problem.

I guess I'll stick with script, alright time to format then, this won't take long.

Litt: I have checked the pages you have send me by mail: both size and resolution are wrong. Did you use the printer's template?

Coryn: size and resolution ok

Has anybody aligned the paragraphs both to left and right?
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 23, 2010, 06:59:36 PM
my paragraphs are aligned to the left. though when you think about it co you cant align to both right and left cause not all words are the same size.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Corycaly on July 23, 2010, 07:01:14 PM
Coryn Sken, this is perfectly possible both in word and photoshop, as demonstrated in my tutorial. Check the scans of the English book you posted yesterday: the lines stop at the same place at the left and at the right.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 23, 2010, 07:08:06 PM
while there is a tool that says it does that it only makes the left side truly aligned then stretches out the words so that the two margins are as similar as possible at their thinnest points. so basically i was trying to make a writing joke.

Litt's versions shouldn't be wrong, i made those myself and exported them the same way i exported the chapter one cover for chimera

are you compareing the pixel size or the document size because they are at 300 dpi, which appears large on a computer screen
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Fnnenn Enninn on July 23, 2010, 08:39:28 PM
I only aligned to the left, not right.
Should I resend?
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 23, 2010, 08:42:13 PM
heres a question then. sumi did you find an align to both sides option with gimp? cause all i could find was left right and centered
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Account Disabled on July 23, 2010, 08:49:42 PM
Now I just feel sad, I don't know what to do, so I'll just ask Sumi how to work it later if he gets it right.

Ah, that'd be helpful. I'm trying myself right now but...I don't know how to set dpi. Why am I completely clueless when it comes to this? ||OTZ

Nope Coryn, I didn't see any align option in Gimp, I can only find the right, left, center ones as you mentioned.
Also, I may resend anyway, since I think on print my font size would appear 2mm to large for Times New Roman: 12

Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES

alright sent litt's pages. used the same font size but a different font so i ended up with bigger letters and a total page count of six. if i need to cut down the page count just let me know and i'll do some more formatting

Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES

I found the option of fill in gimp when I just recently tried it, it just stretched the words to the right until it hits the line, if it's close enough to the right border that is. Is that what was expected?

@Coryn: Thanks a lot.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 23, 2010, 09:41:40 PM
sorta i think. maybe. i dont remember seeing an option like that.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Fnnenn Enninn on July 23, 2010, 09:49:22 PM
Wow, 6pages, mine fits on one.
I'm only using my prologue for now, and thats short, I guess thats the reason.

Anyway, where is that option, Litt?
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Account Disabled on July 23, 2010, 09:53:30 PM
Well I see four little buttons, left, right, centered, and just next to centered is filled.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Coryn on July 23, 2010, 09:58:39 PM
oh that option. well i notice that that option doesnt actually do anything different from left align.
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Account Disabled on July 23, 2010, 10:02:26 PM
I tried it and it stretches any of the words near the right border to reach it, just aligning the right when needed.

Aero: Click on the icon of one of the said pages and go to properties. Read the "details" thumbnails which describes the resolution and size of the page.
Size should be 1875 x 2775 and resolution 300 dpi

Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES

Concerning the "justify" paragraph problem, the solution is easy. Download the latest version of Gimp (2.6) and it works perfectly!
This version allows you to follow exactly my tutorial.

Everybody, please be careful  with the resolution: it's 300 dpi and not 300 ppp!!
Title: Re: Mangaraiders writers anthology: FORMATING STORIES
Post by: Account Disabled on July 24, 2010, 05:23:15 AM
So I guess the justify thing is right for me since I have 2.6. I ended up trying the template and all too, it had those settings, so I guess it wasn't too difficult...after a long explanation and some hardship plus confusion and frustration.

PS: I chuckled a little when I noticed the French on the properties window. :laughing11:

We didn't receive any page from

 Lirne - Qeder - 22/06/2010
Senchi - Ambigram : The beginning
 Legomaestro - Fisher Legacy

If the pages aren't received tomorrow, those projects won't be included in the anthology.
