Title: Favourite Manga Artist?
Post by: Iceh on December 22, 2009, 08:49:46 PM
I guess this is kinda like the "What manga artist would you like to meet.." question.. but in a way, totally different.
So guys- What artist in the professional mangaka world to you most look up to? Are most influenced by- art-wise? Would possibly like to train under? Etc, etc? And why?

I guess I'll go first, hmm. :)
I would love, love, love to be able to train under Yusuke Murata (genius artist behind Eyeshield 21). His artwork.. whew... just blows me away. Maybe, hmm, to the untrained eye it would be like, "Eh! Standard shonen!" No, no way in hell. Just look at the panel layouts, and how varied he is! The perspective in every single panel and unique face angles.. ahh.. I could just drool over it all day. I find, a good way to learn, is not.. nessasarly to COPY his art... but to study it. And don't just stare at it.. figure out where he's placing his lines! So yeah, I'm deeply influenced by his artistic style.. and hope (in my wildest dreams) to be even half as good as he is. Ok... maybe 3/4 as he is.. Siiiiiiiigh.. well enough about me.. your turn!

I would have too many to list because I'm a sucker for beautiful art. I follow Chinese, Korean, and Japanese manga so the names go into the hundreds. Right now though, I would mention CLAMP, Myung-Jin Lee, Masakazu Katsura, and Yuu Watase.

I do agree with you that studying your favorite author's work is as important as reading it if you want to learn from them. This is one of the first tips I give to people who want to start their own manga but don't know how to do panel layouts or create a manga altogether.

My favorite artist? I don't know :o Why don't I know?!  :'(

If you don't know.. maybe it's because you don't pay attention to the artists that create your favourite manga? You should try paying attention more often.. usually these names can help you find your new favourites in the future. Also, it's always good to look up to an artist, that way you can get inspired and pick up tips more easily. : )

I like many manga, but my favorite artist should be...Panu Nateenon...(He's Thai, and I'm not sure how to spell his name - -")

His works are quite well, and I like his attitude!

My favorite manga's artist isn't my favorite manga artist... And sometimes the artwork differs, so I can't say that there's one at the top  :secret:

The man who drew Akira, I think his name is Otomo

The people look actually look Japanese

Although, he cannot really draw attractive women (He said so himself)

The creator of Full Metal Alchemist also has an awesome art style  (I am terrible with names)

The manga artist who does Black Lagoon is also great

the mangaka of shakugan no shana and d. gray man,  Yashichiro Takahashi and Katsura Hoshino. Even though not really good drawings, the manga they make for me is really good. The characters are well created well, maybe because I love mystery and science! ^^
and now The mangaka of Maid-sama!
Usually I used the style of Shakugan no Shana because of the eyes and IM trying to learn Maid Sama style..

Hmmm... rethinking the question/answer

I don't think I'm (=my work -is-) inspired by any mangakas... I did Doodle's tutorial, which may have been inspiring me a lot (by making me to consider clothes- and heads)  :hmm: But if I were to choose a style right now, I would choose Kumeta Kohji (Zetsubou Sensei), but maybe it's just because I'm really into it right now? Anyway, the drawings are somehow plain, yet...

Interesting and unique, that's what Zetsubou sensei focuses on, more the philosophy, the art is different, simple, yet it catches the eye. Is that something like you wanted to say Kite?

Waah...there's so many art styles I like...Yukiru Sugisaki, Yun Kouga, Masashi Kishimoto, Takeshi Obata...but I think the one I admire most would be Natsuki Takaya...more so through the middle of her series, Fruits Basket. I think she doesn't have a lot of assistants, so she draws a lot the backrounds. I lack ability to draw nonliving things, so I wish I could draw in that sense, too...And the way that she places characters and dialouge in panels...yes, I admire that, too...and sometimes I look at the fine linery in the hair of the characters and it makes me want to cry...so...yeah.

I'm firstly and foremostly a manga writer, so artwork is something I don't pay as much attention to. But still, there are some artists I'll have to mention here.

Masashi Kishimoto is the mangaka responsible mainly for the series Naruto. Now, many don't think his art is all that great, but I beg to differ. I think he is a natural talent when it comes to paneling, I always thought his locating the panels was great, and also he is really good at drawing action scenes. Also, in a recent one-shot of his, Bench!, he showed that he could be experimental with his character design, a notable detail being he gave all the characters 'button noses', and it still worked.

Takeshi Obata is the manga artist for the series Death Note and Bakuman. Though he does not write the stories himself, I think it is note-worthy to see his ability at drawing unique art that, even in the world of vast manga, stands out. He has shown realistic style in Death Note, and more of a manga-style in Bakuman. Also, in Bakuman which is one of my all-time favorites, he is able to make the most ordinary and everyday events look really special, something I prize him for.

Of course My favourite manga artist is Akira Toriyama

Because of Dragon Ball (yeah)

And MAsashi Kishimoto because of the NAruto.

I love both stories and the art.

In Dragon Ball Toriyama drew.....(I mean I am just speechles)!!!!! He and MAsashi are GODS to me !!!

Natsumi Ando and Miyuki Kobayashi whom wrote and illustrated Kitchen Princess are my reason even though I am missing my right hand man, to pursue publishing in manga and I also love the art and the story that they worked on together.

Mitsuki Miko whom drew and wrote Aoi Kiseki and Kim Hee Eun whom drew and wrote Dear My Girls.

Those sets of 3 artists and artist combined writer, if I truly had a choice to meet between the three of them it would be Ando and Kobayashi that I would meet to seek words of wisdom and how they were able to "team up", these two are my biggest inspiration.

I am in most awe of Hiromu Arakawa for being a woman and writing/drawing Full Metal Alchemist, an incredibly engaging story that transcends the limited formulaic tropes in most shonen stories. Her female characters are all wonderful (I love Millia Armstrong <3 <3 <3), her character designs diverse, her story hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time, her lineart and compositions are exciting and clear--- oh you guys, I can go on and on. She is my artist idol and when I do a shonen series, I need to hold it up to her standard.

Other artists I look up to are CLAMP (for their prolific nature, and impressive range), Naoki Urasawa (for his wonderful characters, stories and beautiful linework) and Yusuke Murata (for his fantastic skills with perspective, anatomy and diverse character designs).

Well I've always liked Masashi Kishimoto's "sketchy" style.. I like how he does the shading with very sketchy lines, and yet it never feels messy.. HOW DOES HE DO THAT??   i bet u its got something to do with black magic or withcraft.. There's no other explanation  ;)

I'm really, really fond of the art style of Yabuki Kentaro-sensei (To Love-Ru).. His art style, for me, is sooo sexy. And I like Masashi Kishimoto-sensei's art style too simple yet effective. :)

I also like the art style of Katekyoushi Hitman Reborn by Akira Amano-sensei.. Also Wakaki Tamiki-sensei (The World God Only Knows).

Manga people I want to
Worship.. nope
Study under.. nope

Manga people I would like to have beers with?

Katsuhiro Otomo.
Satoshi Kon (deceased).
Mamoru Oshii he do any manga?
Shirow Masamune should probably be included.
Rikdo Koshi I bet this guy is a hoot with a few beers in him.
Shinichi Watanabe not sure if he has done any manga. Seems like he would be fun to beer with.
Yukito Kishiro even if his latest stuff has become a well drawn shonen throw away :(. I like to think he lives in a small apt with lots of drawing tables and a floor littered in cigarettes, energy drinks, and empty beer bottles.

Arina Tanemura. Her art is amazingly detialed and beauitful. Unfortunalty this has a downside to it. Lately Ive found her stories have really gone downhill. I found Im buying her works more for the artwork than for the stories these days, which is a pity. Full Moon Wo Sage*censored*e had a good combination of the two, but her work has steadily declined in the storytelling department since I feel.

I think its important to have a good combination of good art and good storytelling. Some artists and series have this more than others. CLAMP for example for artists, "Count Cain" for a manga series.

I also like Junko Mizunos early works.

I'm just gonna drop in here that I'm trying to learn how to draw the female form and I'm using Nozomu Takami's Dance in the Vampire Bund for my references. I also really like his stylized male form, but overall what gets me is his ability to draw soft faces.

Yes, I'm quite aware of his other works, but that's another story... :-\

I think If I was to choose at this moment, It have to be Yoshihiro Togashi or Rumiko Takahashi. The mangaka for Yu Yu Hakusho & Hunter x Hunter then the mangaka for Inuyasha & Ranma 1/2.

Title: Re: Favourite Manga Artist?
Post by: legomaestro on March 08, 2017, 01:01:13 PM
Some necromancy here, but I don't mind. And indeed, I'm shocked at no mention of Miura sensei as well.

I have too many to mention, but Kubo Tite has always been an inspiration in making cool looking characters and fight scenes. He just has a certain flow that can't be underestimated.

Hiroya Oku of Gantz because of the technical excellence of Gantz, I just can't fathom that many 3d models and that attention to detail. There are other impressive seinen artists who do this, but it's Gantz that really blows my mind.

Of course, in terms of sheer drawing ability Kentaro is a beast as well.

A random favourite of mine would be Sayman Dowman of Vovnich Hotel. Such a cute simplistic style mixed with some grim stories.

And how I wish I could draw like FLCL's Hajime Ueda

Geh, with every name I mention a new name comes to mind...

There aren't really any artists I would identity as favorites, it's more on a series to series basis for me in art ratings.

But to name a few, Toriyama, Takeshi Obata, Ryuta Amazume, Atto, Akira Hiramoto, CUTEG...etc.

First mangaka would have to be Yusuke Murata his artwork is soo good even the background is detailed then Mitsutoshi Shimabokuro his art work in toriko was great too especially the battle scenes and maybe Hiroki Araki of the Jojo franchise though he has some weird poses he's good with the shading and background and muscular characters.
Tite Kubo for solid characters though his backgrounds are plain most of the time he makes the characters have some heavy features like lips nose and so on and finally for the best the one and only Masashi Kishimoto because he's just that good XD
