Title: Re: How about Berserk?

I Googled "Berserk Inspiration" and got this:

Quote
According to Miura, the series' dark fantasy setting was inspired by the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian and the Elric of Melniboné series. Miura stated that he did not see dark fantasy as a genre in itself, but rather as an equivalent of general fantasy. He commented that outside of Japan the big works of fantasy, like The Lord of the Rings, contain dark elements, and in Japan, the fantasy genre was popularized by video games like Dragon Quest, which were aimed at children, and therefore, expurgated the dark elements, but since he received the influence from novels before that of those games, Miura "naturally turned to dark fantasy".

Given Berserk is 10+ years older that would probably make more sense XD

More than anything, Berserk was inspired by real life. Europes medieval period presents more than enough crazy sh*t to base a story off of. Look up Gotz von Berlichingen (AKA: Gotz of the Iron Hand), and tell me he isn't the direct inspiration for Guts. I mean the name barely got changed, lol.

See also: the 30 years war, German witch hunts, the black death, etc., etc., etc.

true, with the exception of the mystical element it's a pretty gritty reality with how the wars and battles play out and so on. A lot of medieval films portray the life as being pretty miserable for everyone who wasn't royalty etc although I've heard it said it wasn't actually that bad for everyone.

I suppose ultimately a lot of things are inspired by real life if you trace them back far enough. It's the twists and turns that change the story, and embellishments that lead to the fairy tails and myths of old.

What I've learned about life in the past has taught me a few things, but in general I'm confident in saying that life was both better and worse, but in ways you wouldn't expect, lol
