Title: Hati's Inventory
Post by: Hati on September 09, 2019, 10:47:05 PM
Here's just some of my art. I do mainly traditional and most (but not all), of my art is in pen and watercolor:

From left to right: Jung, Bora, Jong-ho, and Seo-jun(yes that's his teeth).

I have an affinity for snakes.

Jong-ho fighting in high heels.

Oh and this is nothing. :P
It's a lizard.

Thanks for looking and please tell me what y'all think. ^^

snakes are cool, and nice lizard. you've got a nice amount of patience to draw each of the scales!!! The snakes look pretty accurate too with their fangs and mouth and whatnot.
I don't do watercolour so I can't comment on technique, but all those coloured pieces look great!
keep it up!!

Thanks a lot, I'm glad you like it ;)

For the lizard, I just split up the back into 3rds and drew the scales with their curves. The legs and head were easy since they're just a bunch of tiny oval scales that overlap.

The 3rd painting I did was done all in only two colors (red and blue) with blotting to show hightlights in the hair. If you get a desaturated orange color and mix it with very dark blue, you can get this blackish color that is great for shadows and greyscale.

Thanks again and hope you have a wonderful day. ^^

Oh wow! I really admire you people that can do watercolour.
I also like that you're not afraid of drawing groups of characters together.

Do you sketch out the drawing with pencil first or do you use the pen right away?

Hi there!
Yes I do use a pencil before I ink with pen. For comics, I use a non-photo blue pencil but if it's just character sketches or full watercolor paintings, then I use an H pencil which gives light lines that you can erase easily.
For pens, I use Sakura pens of many different sizes. They're great materials.
Hope this answers your question.

Yeah, skin color can be tricky.
I suggest using a very  dilated (light) orange for the base color. NEVER use red for base color unless a person is sick, cold (like in the Alps), drunk, or angry. You should only use red for the lips and tongue. Use a dilated red for the lips first, and then layer and layer the red till you get the value you want.

Next, do the light shadows by using a light warm brown. These shadows are usually under the eyebrow, lower eyelid, nose, and lower lip. Of course, this can change base on how much pigment a person's skin has, or the lighting situation (desert light, night club light, etc) which can make a face look yellow, red, green, blue, etc. It also depends on where the light is coming from (above, below, etc).

Finally, do the really dark shadows which are on the neck and jaw. But always start out light, or you will fail. For these shadows use blue and other cool tones. Blue is very good for shadows.

Hope this helps. Be sure to practice if you wanna get better.

absolutely lovely. coloured comics are always a plus, and a lovely watercolour style to boot.
such a great little underwater vehicle - it looks like a car that turns into a submarine? somehow I get the feeling it's pedal powered XD

and great idea putting the dates on your work. when you look back it'll help to know when you did stuff to see how much you've improved.

to make images smaller using the img bbcode, type the width or the height you want and the forum will scale it down!
for example:

So, I'm starting a manga, I have the story down, and a few pages, the problem is I'm very disorganized so there's a lot of back and forth work. Also, I'm a sophomore in high school and have homework every night, so yeesh. That's a pain in the ass

Anyway, here is what I have so far. I do have pages but not much yet so, I'll just talk about the characters:

Here is the height chart for my characters.
From left to right: Jong-ho, Jung, Bora, Seo-jun, Force, Toothless.

The story is called IDOL: Recalled to the Light  and it is about a dysfunctional band.

Here is the lead female and main protagonist of the story. She is called Bora. Bora is very androgynous and has a weird sense of humor, humor that no one understands. Kinda like Kurt Vonnegut. Bora has a mysterious past and does not like to talk about it that much. If you're wondering about the sword, she knows martial arts. Don't touch that sword 'cos she will kill you. Bora does not smoke. She has an unlit cigar in her mouth so she can look cool, but not get cancer. She drinks because it's cool. She hates the color pink.

Here are the brothers Jong-ho (left) and Jung (right). They do not get along well, but respect each other. Jung is one year older than Jong-ho.

Here is Jong-ho in the fog. He is a dweeb. He likes men. Even though he is also a protagonist, he is not the main one and his sexuality will not be playing a main role in the story. Why does he like men? I dunno. I made him that way. Jong-ho is a soft boy. He writes in his journal everyday. He is perverted, but in ways you wouldn't suspect. He's conservative, and gets mad when people cuss or say things that are politically incorrect. He also has a feminine side, but likes to keep it to himself. He knows how to fit in with society, by not revealing too much about himself to others.

Here is Jung. This is not my best drawing of him because I messed up the anatomy. Ugh *slaps myself*.
Anyway, Jung is not his real name. His real name is Byung-ho but he calls himself "Jung" because it's easier for others to pronounce. He has a weird fashion sense. He likes erotica and reads eroctica in public (like Kakashi). Jung has a st-st-st-st-stutter (no, I am not making fun of stutterers, this is how he actually sounds when he talks. And I have one too). He fidgets a lot, and is often late to events. Sometimes, he finds his work so interesting that he forgets to eat, comb his hair, or even take a crap. He gets into arguments with his brother about these things and for cussing because he gets mad easily. Jung likes to write music and sing. And he always wears a mask, even when he's sleeping. He is a funny guy.

This is Seo-jun ( and NO!!! he is not based off of Harry Potter). He wears glasses, but won't have them on for the first part of the story. He is your average guy who plays the guitar, and Bora's next door neighbor. Seo-jun can be nice, but he never smiles. Seo-jun  believes that the world is a terrible place and that everything sucks. He is not open to other people's opinions and can be very cold sometimes. Seo-jun is also a dweeb. He thinks that he is the greatest and that nothing bad will happen to him. He dresses like a middle-aged man.

Feel free to give feedback. ^^

Okay, so now I am gonna discuss the antagonists:

Here is Toothless. He is the main antagonist and the Alpha of the  Society of the Ever-burning Flame  (otherwise known as the "Fire Gang"). He is called Toothless (which is not his real name), because when he was little, he was neglected by his father and ate too much sugar. He became obese and his two front teeth rotted. Now, he's a vegetarian and will only drink milk, eat eggs and fish. He never got his teeth fixed. The sword that he carries is a Jian sword. He is always angry and has mommy issues. Whenever he is confronted by a person who wants to help him, he kills them. He believes that the world is full of evil and that the only way to overcome that evil is to become more eviler. Yet he empathy for others.

Love your character's design, especially the two in that short story. Maybe play more with hairstyles to differentiate. But yea, love the designs. The character descriptions sound cool too.

There are 26 gangsters in the "Fire Gang" including Toothless.
Here is the 2nd one:

This is Force, Toothless's oldest friend and another founder of the gang. He is 47, Toothless is 45. His hair is all white because he didn't age well (and neither did Toothless). Force used to be normal but now he has Kanye West syndrome. Force got very wounded one day, and got all his blood replaced with artificial liquid, a liquid which he can control with his mind, shape it, and use it as a weapon (which is what the right panel is). Force is not very tall (only 4 feet) with purple eyes. The downside of having this artificial liquid (known as Ichor) is that he will live forever. So, when he gets an injury that he's supposed to die from, his body will heal immediately, but very slowly. So, he will suffer from the pain for about 24-48 hours before his wound is fixed. The Ichor coursing through his veins keeps him awake, he cannot sleep. Because of that, Force has a very unstable personality and hallucinates often. He cusses too much, and is very rude to others. This starts to break the relationship between himself and Toothless.

Why is he Toothless's friend?  Because he was the only person Toothless could relate to. Force wasn't always this way. Like Toothless, he has a hunger for power. His desire is to help Toothless rise to power, but with his mental illness, he can't really relate to his friend.

Nice superpower of the controllable blood liquid, and also nice side effects to keep it from being too overpowered.

You say that he will recover from injuries, how would this cover a major injury such as loosing an arm? would the arm grow back from nothing or it would just heal as-is, with no arm?

Hi there,
Yes if he would lose an arm, his arm would grow back like a lizard's tail. Just during that time he would be in a lot of pain. Every single time a cell regenerates, the telomeres on the ends of his chromosomes shrink. This means that there is a limited number of times when he can actually do this. At the same time, because of the telomeres shrinking, he ages faster which is why his hair is white even though he's only 47.

Thanks for having an interest and I hope this answers your question ^^

The 3rd gangster, Andras, is a bit of an oddball. He has the weird ability of transplanting body parts into his own. Therefore, his body is a web of other people's DNA...people that he has slain (blue eyes, blonde hair, and right leg). He wears a necklace of his enemies teeth (21 in total). He hopes to one day find a tooth with a gold cap but hasn't yet. Andras always carries a golden spyglass around with him. He pretends it's his superpower. He is a shopaholic and likes expensive Chinese silks and American clothing brands. He wears Chinese characters on his face to mask his identity and to bring him power. This one says "Lucky".

Andras is the Beta of the gang (meaning that after Toothless dies, he will be leader of the gang). He is the only gangster who keeps Force in control and is liked by everyone. The only problem with him is that he often acts before thinking. He hates superficial people ,and corruption, and just wants to escape from the burdens of the world. He however, does not agree with Toothless's philosophy that the world is full of evil and the only way to bring peace is to bring pain to those that are causing the evil. To him, violence is not the answer. But yet, he has killled people himself.

The 4th gangster is Haruo, Andras's best friend. His weapon of choice is a ray gun that shoots green fire. Haruo only became part of gang because he was an orphan. He is the least popular gangster and a misanthropist. He is asexual. The only person he loves is Andras, because Andras is the only person who understands him. He is secretly afraid of Toothless, but acts calm at all times.

Been doing some stuff y'all.  Here it is:

This is the 5th gangster Billy. No, he does not physically look like that, the flames and horns are a metaphor. Sometimes, it is hard to explain abstract ideas and I find it better to show it through physical stuff or in the forms of animals. In this case, the abstract idea that I'm trying to represent is what evil is and who is evil. I only used red, blue, and yellow for this one. Lots of warm colors.

The 6th gangster is Ashoka. I have done some armor sketches, I will post those tomorrow. Ashoka's armor is a Korean brass scale armor with Butanese style lion helmet. The armor is not that heavy, but the cotton interior is so well-insulated that who ever wears it will get hot fast. The lion helmet has a hidden brass visor that covers the face. The mane is made out of fire-proof wool wilst the rest of it is wood.

And these are some pencil sketches that I did:

One of Haruo (I messed up on the arms but shading is good).

And some foreshortening of Toothless with Haruo in background.

I want to do the majority of my comic in pencil, but I'm not sure yet. I use lots of hatch marks and lines with circular marks for skin. It takes a long time, but the drawings turn out really well. I'm planning to use a better sharpened pencil for facial features since, I still want them to look cartoony. I am aiming for semi-realistic.
What do you guys think?

I've been doing some armor sketches:

This is the armor for Ashoka (see previous post). It's traditional Korean brass-scale armor with the lion-helmet being based off of Butanese design (Koreans pick earth colors and don't use bright colors that much because they want to be at harmony with nature).

And these are the weapons. The first two, the Headcutter and Throatslitter are based off of Japanese Samurai designs wilst the other weapons are Korean Silla knight designs.

This is the warrior's horse, a Mongolian breed. Mongolian horses were well liked by many Asian dynasties. You would think they would be easy to draw, but no. They are very complex animals.

nice weapon designs, I always love to see those :)
plus very nicely drawn and shaded horses! often drawing animals is hard when you draw people a lot (at least it is for me haha)

I'm gonna sell this baby at an art sale, but am kinda nervous. I don't know if people will buy it :P.

Oh well.

I like the approach for the background on the first picture. Reminds me of the old times when I always got too much water on my paintbrush - painting is just too hard for me :). But here you did it very nicely - very good smudge effects and colors.
On the second one though, the characters stand out too much in my opinion - I'd say it's because of very distinctive black lineart which kinda cuts them out from the background - it isnt't visible too much on the first one though.
Best of luck on the art sale!

Today's post is gonna be a tutorial. So yaaaaaay!!!  :D

How to draw a bird

Birds are probably one of the most beautiful animals. They are very diverse with thousands of color schemes, textures, and patterns. Birds make really cool manga characters especially if you wanna do fantasy or dragons.

Step 1: Do a value study
A value study is a quick sketch of the animal's color.

For this tutorial, I am using a Red-shouldered macaw. Choose a reference photo (preferably the profile) and do a quick sketch. Do not draw all the details in the feathers. Just suggest the feathers. I am using watercolor, but if you are using other mediums, use something that is well blendable; a medium you know well. I suggest drawing the value study on a small piece of paper, so you won't add too much detail (because that's not the point).

Questions to help you:
What are some shadows? (blues, purples, greys)
What are some highlights? (Yellows, whites)
What is the base color? (green, red, orange, etc)

Step 2: Draw the skeleton
Drawing the skeleton, or having a skeleton reference will help a lot.

Birds have very different anatomy from mammals. They have a wishbone, three "fingers", hollow bones, and no bladder (yeah really). The number of toes depends on the type of bird, but most birds have three toes in front and one toe in back. Owls and woodpeckers for instance, have two toes in front and two in back. When you look at a bird's skeleton, their bones look a lot like dinosaurs.

Once you've drawn a skeleton, or printed out a skeleton reference, you want to break down the skeleton into basic shapes.

For example, the macaw has a square-shaped head, a hooked beak, huge eye sockets, a long neck, very longs legs, and a triangular body.

Step 3: Draw the wings
Wings are key. They are the most important part of the body and the most frustrating to draw.

Spoiler

As you can see, I got frustrated myself.

the trick is that the wing comes in two sections... a rectangle and then a triangle connected to the rectangle.
You have the parts of the wing:
Spoiler
(http://www.paulnoll.com/Oregon/Birds/ID-wing-Duck-2.jpg)
Taken from Paul Noll's Oregon birds page
You want to draw the bird's wings several times including how the feathers and skin are connected to bones. Look at multiple resources. Deviantart and John Muir Laws's website provide good resources to drawing bird wings as they can be tricky.

Sketch the wings in the pose that you want.

Step 4: Sketch the head

Which way do you want your bird to face?

Draw the bird's head multiple times. It helps if you draw a sphere with a cross going all around it because that will tell you where the eyes and beak should be. Draw the head in multiple directions. What I found out was the macaws look really ugly from the front, so I just felt better with them facing profile. Just make a quick sketch.

Step 5: Do a body sketch

Pose your bird in the way you want it to be posed.

I wanted my bird to be sitting on a branch but off balance. Use your skeleton for reference and draw the basic shapes. Use youtube videos of your bird or John James Audubon paintings for references, especially if your birds is doing some weird dance, singing, courtship display, or flying.

Step 6: Make your sketch more refined and add detail

this is when you come in with your darker pencil or pen and start drawing the shapes. Now it begins to look like a bird:

Once you've done that, then draw the details in the feathers, but leave eyes blank (we'll fill them with color).

Use your wing and head studies as well as your reference picture.

Step 7: COLOR!

This is when you'll need your value study:

Pictures can help too. Layering the colors are key. Make sure you lay down the highlights before you do base color and shades. But don't be too detailed. You want a lot of detail, but not too much (it still needs to look like a sketch). Stop drawing before you think it's done. Draw a small background.

And that's it! That's how you draw a bird :3

Make sure to admire your work.

awesome tutorial!
I haven't drawn animals or birds in aaaaages, I must get around to that.

are you missing an image in the first spoiler? I don't see anything.

I think a lot of these methods for drawing people or animals are quite similar in how you break the object down and then build it up again yourself with shapes and such like. But knowing what shapes and proportions to use is where one's experience comes in.

I had a look at bird skeleton images - very inspiring and educational!

Have been drawing some more. Here's what I've been working on:

This is the Red-shouldered macaw. I am doing this series where I show the animal, and then how the animal sees itself. Even though most animals can't pass the mirror test, that doesn't mean they don't know who they are. An antelope running in a herd of antelope knows that it is not the antelope running next to it. Therefore, how does the animal see itself?

Red-shouldered macaws are known for their docile personalities. Of course, birds each have their own personality and I decided to show the macaw as a happy-go-lucky type guy. I did this with colored pencil and pen.

This is my first time with digital art. I was surprised how good it turned out. :)
This is a Blue-tongued skink. I drew this with Tayasui sketches on Ipad. I want to try digital more often but I am nervous. I guess the more you do something, the less intimidating it is. I guess I'll have to keep trying.

Spoiler
(https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/555513467642052612/657051949493125161/turquoise.jpg?width=825&height=1178)

Have been working on my manga for some time. Started drawing pages and chapter 1. I am excited to post it, but it's taking a really really long time.

So, for now here's gangster #7, Turquoise. I won't say much about him other than that he is a bad guy. You can tell by the blood on his swords, and the hands on his belt. His swords were based off of Mayan design.

I got this really cool book called Swords by Ben Boos and it's great for weapon reference. Go check it out.

The sword that he's holding  in his right hand has teeth with serrated edges on it. That way, if you get cut, the teeth go into your skin. The sickle-like instrument in his left, is like a boomerang and can absorb energy from hits.

The reason why his nails, sclera, and tongue is blue is to show that he's less than human. After I added the blue ink I realized that I made him creepier than I intended. Still looks cool though.

Turquoise is Asian. The reason why so many of my Asian characters have non-Asian traits is so that way the reader can identify them better (also black hair and brown eyes is boring). Like, Bora's most defining trait is her green eyes; none of the other characters have her eyes. It's also like Jung's blue hair which none of the other characters have. However, they still have almond eyes and semi-realistic faces.

My manga is gonna be a mix between fantasy and reality and surrealism. There's gonna be lots of symbolism as well. I've never done this before, so a lot of the stuff that I will draw won't make a lot of sense the first time. You'll have to look at it twice.

Yep, that's a recurring design aspect in pretty much every manga. It certainly helps to have at least the main cast uniquely identifiable. Good thinking :)

and awesome you're working on your manga! It takes me several years to get a single chapter out so you're doing better than me for sure :)
looking forward to it.

and great digital drawing. Considering you've not done it before it came out really well. I almost thought it was a photograph at first glance, it was so sharp compared to your other sketches of pen and watercolour :P

Hi there!
Yes, the lizard was based off of that image, but wasn't traced. I free-handed the drawing. What I did for the scales on the back was split the back into rows and then draw rails on top, which I then rounded into scales. So, not the same scale pattern. I tried to make the image look realisitic, but also like a sketch.

Thanks for asking ;)

So, I have some good news.

The good news is that I am getting closer to finishing chapter 1 of my manga!
For spoilers, here is a sample of the chapter:
Spoiler

Here is an FAQ on what the manga's gonna be about:
Spoiler
1) What is the manga called?
The manga is called IDOL: Recalled to The Light. It will be done in two acts, with act 1 having 12 chapters (I have not planned act 2).

2) Where does the manga take place and what is it about?
The manga takes place in South Korea. It is about two brothers who don't know what to do with their lives. They know that they want to become famous, but don't know how until they go to South Korea where they meet Bora, a martial artist and a drunk. Together, the three of them become pop idols and hit the billboard charts. But with all the fame and glory, underneath lies a deadly secret which could put all 3 of them at risk. As they struggle to get famous, a shadow lurks in the corner attempting to stop them.

3) What are some of the main themes?
What evil really is, poverty, depression, drugs, sex, lgbt, dreams, quirky, surrealism, martial arts, and Kurt Vonnegut and Family Guy style humor. You get the picture. Yes, there will be some violence, and yes some dark themes, but none of it will be too gory or too inappropriate. It will be humor for 13-year-olds. But gekiga style stuff.

4) When will chapter 1 come out?
Probably, February?

5) Will you be doing the manga in watercolor?
Yes! It will also be right to left format.

I will keep you guys posted :)

So, some bad news....
My art at the art sale did not get sold. Oh well  :noidea: what can you do? You gotta start somewhere.
Plus, I've only been drawing for 15 years, and these people have been drawing a way lot longer than I have plus art school and everything. Haven't even graduated high school yet, so I don't see this as a loss. In fact, I might've learned something about myself which is, my art style is very edgy and hard to classify as it is cartoony with a surrealist twist. Since most artists do realism and impressionism, cartoons are not often seen in galleries. That's why I think my art won't do well in galleries and better off in books or magazines.

Anyway, here's some more art that I've been doing:
Why do I keep obsessing over this character? XD

Came up with some costumes for him (part 1)
1) Biker jacket with upturned collar , and red gloves.

2) Yellow-striped overalls with stupid hat and ugly sweater.

3)White high-collared shirt with sharks with laser guns.

Since Haruo is a gangster, he must always wear the gang symbol as an armband or  sewn onto an article of clothing. Higher-ranking gangsters don't have to wear the gang symbol, but lower ranks must at all times.
(part 2 coming soon).

And I've made some revisions to Jong-ho:

Decided to change his hair color to red since he would get mixed up with Haruo if he had brown hair. I like this picture because he kinda looks like Boy George. :P

Alright. This isn't manga but I've been doing some calligraphy. It's really helping with my hand-writing. If I keep praticing, my hand-writing might get better!
This is from "Leaves of Grass" by Walt Whitman. I used a fountain pen with ink to do this :3

aww shame it didn't sell!
as you say there are lots of genres of art and equally people have many very specific tastes as well, so you've just got to find someone who will buy your works ;)

giving the same character different outfits really helps to give them a solid personality, and it's good practice at drawing the same person over and over again, which will help with drawing a paneled manga.

ahhh caligraphy, I've never tried that. always meant to but never quite got around to it >_<
and totally I'm sure your handwriting will improve if you practice and have a good target of what you are aiming at!

Ah shoot, sorry to hear it didn't sell. You're right though, anything that can be passed off as 'cartooney' instantly has an up hill battle to fight. Back when I was just another art kid in highschool there was a very talented girl in the class below mine. She was obviously great at what she did, but since her art had a cartoonish style, it never got much traction at the art shows. Hopefully people will one day get their heads around it.

Hi there! Thanks for your question.
Yes, I'm doing all the drawings in both digital and traditional art. The drawings will be based off of fashion trends and photography, but with a surreal twist.  My main inspirations are DazedKorea (Korean fashion magazine), and FRUiTs (Japanese fashion magazine), but also inspirations from nature.  I like finding ugly things and transforming them into something beautiful.

I'm glad that you're excited and I can't wait to share my drawings with you ^^

Well, here's a quick spoiler of the comic I'm working on:
Spoiler
(https://i.ibb.co/GWVwbvn/Capture.png) (https://imgbb.com/)

And, yeah all of this manga is done in watercolor. Just like my other drawings. I chose watercolor because it's easy to use, and color can really add depth to feeling. It's the story that's important, but it's also how the images make you feel. And color changes everything you feel about an image. For example, if you have a really serious plotline, but you use pastel colors (like pink), the reader views that as not being serious. You're just trying to be ironic.

I also realized that over the past months making this comic, that I have no interest in making it for children. I am a big fan of Taiyo Matsumoto and Yoshihiro Tatsumi, and I want to do manga in the gekiga style (Japanese for "dramatic pictures). In other words, my audience will be adults.

Thanks.
It's been very long, but I should finish chapter 1 by June...hopefully...I'm just a slowpoke with school and art and living, eating, chores, exercise, and crapping. But that's life. Life makes it in a way where you can't get things you want right away. lol.

I'm kinda nervous about posting it though. It's nothing too gory or too suggestive visually, but the themes that I talk about in my manga are dark, like a Grimm's fairy tale, or like Inio Asano's stuff. I've already posted it online. People do like it. I'm just a weirdo and have no idea how the comic world deals with weirdos like me.

Here's what I've been doing for the past 2 months.

I've been taking regular trips down to Chinatown where, I was able to produce this (and witness a lion dance!).
It was a lot of work, but this is the final result, and I'm proud of it.
I've think I've found my style.

Here's a cat I drew for a friend.

This is my character, Yuzu. She's half-Japanese and an androgynous model. She likes the color red, and her favorite animal is the Minotaur.
I love her already ;)

I love the cat, but ah, those rock like shapes also kinda look like they're up to something shady  :ninja:

Thanks. I was inspired by Caspar David Friedrich's painting 'Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog'. :)
