Title: Chit Chat 2019
Post by: Manimal on January 01, 2019, 11:14:10 AM
A new year, a new Chit Chat thread. Let's chit, let's chat and let's make way more pages than last year's 32.

Only 32? There were some quiet spots during the year weren't there? Ah well...
CHIT CHAT 2019!

I started my year by eating cookies and reading the last episode of Noblesse  Almost can't believe it. The webtoon actually finally finished...

What about everyone else?

Well, 2018 also saw a rise in non chitchat activities. So I think that's probably a win for us.

I rang it in at the big KC ball drop downtown. Pretty good time, if not utterly exhausting. Got a pair of shutter shades out of the deal though, so pretty good all 'round.

Well happy 2019 to you all. Its been a steady one for me, been ill as all hell since the 27th so just getting over that before I throw myself headfirst into my resolutions. How about you guys? Got anything you want to do over the next 12 months?

Well I'm trying to convince myself to write at least a paragraph of one my stories every day. And possibly post em as a light novel over on tapas once a month or so so that I have a reason to not procrastinate. We'll see how that goes I guess.

im trying to increase my output and draw a lot/daily, but also reduce my output at any one time and pace myself better.
also lose 5kg or so from comfort eating over my bad art XD

hope everyones resolutions work out!!

Ah yeah I'm with you both in terms of trying to increase my output and productivity. I'm going to try and be more active on here this year as I found that seemed to be the best motivator for me.

Seeing others hard work inspired me to get on with my own. Plus I can actually log into my account on my phone again, which helps massively.

How long have you been unable to? I feel like that's a very strange glitch if you're just using a common mobile browser.

It's my phone browser. I've had it with a few sites where it was auto filling passwords and not allowing me to enter it manually . I've sorted it now though just needed to tamper with it

been doing more laborious stuff in the garden lately, I barely have the strength to draw this last week from being too worn out :(
I can still sketch, as sketches are sketchy, but I dont have the control to do inking or linearts, so I'm producing a whole bunch of stuff that's waiting to be finished as always @_@
it'll probably be another month before the garden job is done but it'll be good when it's done. basically we're doing landscaping and raised flower beds and stuff. lots of digging and sawing wood and stuff.

Post by: legomaestro on January 17, 2019, 05:21:51 PM
Hey, it's always the right time to drink in some timezone.

@suuper how exactly do you raise flower beds? How much of the work is mechanical? Are we talking super-villain mansions you're landscaping or regular folk?

Don't burn out, but don't get too tempted to drop out of the sketching game completely. It's ridiculous how bad you can backslide when you stop drawing haha.

I've been dragging my feet like an idiot. I'm not impressed. Going to go ham on my regimens now and try to do more. I can't believe I'm still like this after last year. It's a curse.

just my own garden so nothing special there :)

basically its building a huge wooden box the size and height of a bed and filling it with dirt. all carpentry and hard labour XD we're using heavy materials so its heavy going. it's more muscle burn out than art burn out lol
I've been neglecting my regimes a bit though.

I keep on starting my regimen on random pieces of paper and completely lost track. I'm just starting a new bunch by from scratch.

I like Celsius just because you know anything negative is cold XD
honestly as a "scientist" I prefer Kelvin because 0 is 0.
I was taught a quick basic conversion for C to F, double and add 30. you get close enough for most things.

Anything below 0 may be cold, but y'all look at 20 and think "warm"? Really? How often do you need to know the boiling point of water in every day Life? Freaking never. And i get using celcius for science, but it just does not help for your average joe. and as you point out, it's much better to use Kelvin then anyway!

And your map is incorrect Vacant my friend, because there are still countries in Africa and Asia that use imperial. And don't sit up on that British high horse either! I know you people can't commit to either system of measurements! You just opted for a bastard child of the two!

And while we're there, y'all measure weight in increments of 14 pounds! That makes so much less sense than anything we use in America! At least base 12 is a thing! (And arguably better than base 10, if we could commit to it)

You got to steer away from "bite sized" content for a while. Our brains adjust to the length of content we consume, so when you're doing nothing but looking at memes (or whatever), your brain starts saying "yeah! More small stuff!"

So yeah, get off Twitter for a while, spend your time taking on longer stuff.

Small update:

tw: discussion of smoking
Y'know, since this forum is technically PG/PG-13 and smoking cigarettes is usually an 18+ type deal...
I used to smoke cigarettes and then vaped after that. Even though I "quit" a while back, my cravings have been stirred up, likely due to stress. A friend of mine suggested smoking herbs (like catnip and lavender--please note that I do not condone smoking marijuana where it is illegal), and that's actually been working well for me. No tobacco, no nicotine, no carcinogen filters, plus the act of holding something between my fingers and inhaling smoke is enough to sort of trick my brain out of its funk.

So like, if you're looking for ways to shave off cigarette smoking, I recommend trying it. Also rolling your own cigarettes is way cheaper anyway.

DISCLAIMER: inhaling any kind of smoke or vapor into your lungs is inherently harmful, and although some items may be "safer", that does not mean that they are "safe" proper. Don't start, kids.
Title: Re: Chit Chat 2019
Post by: legomaestro on March 14, 2019, 05:42:47 AM
What is this? A wild Mahlua appeared.

Oh jeez I think I've had worst discussions without considering that. I keep on thinking everyone is the same age. Wait! Don't remind me I'm not a teenager anymore. Please. NOOOOOO

Ahem

Spoiler
Truly only ever been a 'social' smoker. I 100% do it only for the aesthetic feel of smoking. Haven't really ever felt the nicotine thing. But I feel this nice, fluffy 'wall' between myself and my emotions and that's OK.

The cigarette rolling thing is super popular where I'm at. Taxes are murder on the wallets of career smokers, so they learn it. Now I've gotta tell you I love seeing girls smoke for some silly reason (They look soooo coool) But them rolling cigarettes with one hand and ish makes me drool. Also looks cool when dudes do it because it's a high art, but I don't know man. Just how.

I try and only ever come up with messes.

I'm on the fence about vaping. Ray Velcoro puts it best https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL3AuyOfBtI

But the smooke! It's so much! And cheaper I hear. So yeah on the fence but understand.

How much does it cost to get the liquid stuff?
Title: Re: Chit Chat 2019
Post by: Coryn on March 14, 2019, 07:45:01 AM
Ah man, I would not condone getting into vaping either Lego. Vaping liquid has some real nasty *censored* in it too. It's a prime case of the law not moving fast enough to keep up with the product. There's a lot of talk of "no long term health problems", but the stuff hasn't been on the market long enough for long term health problems to occur. Just remember how long it took people to figure out cigarettes were bad for you. History repeats and all that.

Herb cigarettes are definitely a way to progress. If only to cut the tobacco out. And look, I definitely partake in the occasional smoke, so I can't judge, but if you have a habit, it's seriously worth considering how to break it.
Title: Re: Chit Chat 2019
Post by: MahluaandMilk on March 14, 2019, 10:56:51 PM
And honestly the first step is to recognize that it is a habit, and it probably is an addiction (in my case), and to examine your urge from that perspective. It's like a parasite in your brain as opposed to something you really want. But man I feel on the aesthetic, Lego.

Gotta say, though, any product like vaping that isn't even required to provide an ingredients list should be scrutinized and not trusted. Although I used to vape as well.

For me it's not really a nicotine thing either, at least I don't think. In fact, cigarettes have always made me feel pretty gross when I have hit the nicotine high. I don't really like being high, as I've discovered. But the act of smoking itself feels empowering, and that is where the addiction comes from for me.

So yeah, just...to all the non-smokers out there: you are beautiful and perfect as you are please never change this aspect of yourself.

Oh my. That's kind of...wonderful really. I almost want to become a $5 Patron of that. Sorry guys we aren't playing stupid Senji again, and forget about Talisman, it's Carly Rae time...I like it.

Me and my friend went to the real Chinese restaurant in town, like you know not just chicken balls but food I've never even seen before. They do something on the weekend where they have a ton of dishes and you check what you want. Dim Sum. It's my belief that they put chicken feet on the menu just to mess with Westerners. Just to laugh at us try to eat them. and we tried to eat them. and we failed. But everything else was cool and it was like an actual new taste for some stuff, plus it was a small unsuspecting place. A possible successor to the Polish restaurant that I will never get over.

Though like I said the best pierogis I've had since the Polish restaurant where at the Japanese all you can eat place. I bet you only in my city would you hear someone say "they have good pierogis at the Japanese place".

well I found my dusty Rubik's cube yesterday and gave it a spin. After relearning all the moves I can just about solve in under 3 minutes. My old record as a kid was 1:50 so I'm hoping I can smash that and get at least under a minute. Also I don't feel like drawing at all. Well I've drawn a lot lately so meh.

So this is the best thing ever when it happens at the shop.

Someone was selling CD's, he was pretty goofy but already. Talking about how he was going to get so wasted he'd piss himself and go skeet shooting. Anyway he had Van Halen II so I was like, "cool this is a good album, lots of good songs like D.O.A." (I always flex my knowledge by mentioning the obscure songs on the albums so people know I know, like a dink) and at the exact same time we both started to hum the riff of D.O.A. It was cosmic, it was true magic in real life.

and then today someone was like "ya I like early Sabbath, you know that one song that sounds like an old World War II machine gun" and I was like "Oh Children Of The Grave, you know the one that goes ba-banahnahnahnah" then he was all "baaa" then I was all doing the drum fill on the counter and soon enough we did the whole intro, looking like idiots no doubt but sometimes real magic happens in life if you let it.

Don't really know why I posted this but you know.

Specific Records put out Haru Nemuri's Haru to Shura on record for sale this morning at 2 AM, only 500 copies. I woke up at 5:40 and there was 4 copies left, ticked down to 3 right there and by the time I frantically typed in my info on my phone and when I placed my ordered there was 1 left. They're repressing it in May but nice to have gotten it, first press, in the zero hour anyway. and for $40 shipped it's a pretty good price for an amazing record. and another J-Pop album on record as well...always great. Just hope it's a good pressing.

Hasn't happened to me yet, but I've got some pretty poor cheapo pressings. Like Teenage Dream where there are only 2-3 songs a side on 2 records and it sounds worse than the CD. New press records are often mediocre I find, or just passable, but necessary to get certain albums/artists in my collection. No new press records I've got have matched up to the sheer quality of the Beatles mono reissues though, those are God tier, absolutely amazing packaging and pressing. I am worried about this Haru album though since I was in such a rush I somehow didn't put my house number just the street. I emailed Specific Recordings and someone replied but than Bandcamp sent an email saying it was shipping with the incomplete address. So...I hope I actually get it.

BUT ON DISCOGS. The fricking dingus dink I ordered Kusokawa Party from hasn't done anything in 2 weeks, no notice of shipping or anything. I sent a message and will do the seller not responding thing tomorrow if I get no reply. He had a 100% feedback but then someone recently left a negative saying basically "no update". So...might've just lost some money there if that doesn't work out. This will be my last order on Discogs if I get it or not.

Carly Rae's coming to my city! Last time she was here was a few months before that song took off outside Canada. I was hoping she'd come here at some point. Should be an enjoyable show, I just hope she keeps "Emotion" and "Let's Get Lost" in the setlist. and if she could do "Curiosity" (which was a hit on local radio) & "The One", "Cry" + "Roses"...that'd be perfect.

and Iron Maiden in Winnipeg the month before this. Thankfully they're doing the old songs, I mean I like the new stuff but you go to see Iron Maiden for the classics not 12 minute drags like "The Red And The Black". They even went for a while without playing "Run To The Hills". All I want them to do is "Children Of The Damned", "The Prisoner" and "Infinite Dreams". A man can dream.

haha well I am indeed very frugal, but I also live with my parents which reduces my living expenses considerably. I do still pay a rent but it's more of a contribution to expenses.
It is also a well paying school, about 20% more than my last job  (^_^)v

Why this website doesn't have a discord? would be easier for communication and posting art/books.

Post by: Coryn on July 08, 2019, 10:00:57 PM
Yeah, they come and go. The main thing is that if we have an official discord, then somebody has got to moderate it, and we simply don't have that kind of time. (I take this opportunity to remind/inform that MR's mods and admins do this gig for fun, not because we're getting paid (we aren't))
Title: Re: Chit Chat 2019
Post by: Hasith on July 09, 2019, 12:42:28 AM
Its not just only nobody getting paid for this but some has to pay to keep things running smoothly. That glitch was related to that too. Godaddy decided they have to make sure my credit card is mine and that i'm the one who using it. They wanted me to use the same PC I used my old credit card. But I was out of city so it had to wait till I return.

There are discord, Skype groups, DA, Twitter and even FB Fan pages but those are ony few used time to time. For example I did post about this issue on our FB page. For some reason only one member contacted me about this. lol

The discord things, like the forum have always worked on the basis that members participate.  There is no top-down thing where we declare how the forum should work and function, but rather members come together and share their projects and ideas and through mutual participation the forum chugs along. Same with discord, skype and whatever. Just post there regularly and talk to people and they'll become as active as you like.

(I'm calling myself out with this too though haha)
Title: Re: Chit Chat 2019

I'd be down to moderate one or make one since I literally have nothing to do and I am always online there.
Title: Re: Chit Chat 2019
Post by: Robin Ryuu on July 18, 2019, 01:43:21 PM
You’re always free to make one. Not sure how many people would join as the active MR community seems to be steadily declining over the past couple years. (I miss some of the old faces I knew around here.)

The skype chat consisted of different members than the main site for some reason so you might end up with such a situation.
Title: Re: Chit Chat 2019
Post by: Coryn on July 18, 2019, 02:05:12 PM
Well what tends to happen is that people end up in the chat, then either leave MR proper but stay in the chat, or invite non-MR people in. So that's how you get the strange faces mostly.

After all, more people (especially younger people) flock to social media sites or chat apps as their first thought for a place to share art/writing. We started this place when the forum still reigned supreme. So it's understandable that a chat on discord or whatever the new hotness happens to be will have an easier time retaining active users.

Just you wait. It'll be Wicked 10 years after this. And 20 years from now, we'll be getting Hamilton (Although Hamilton is pretty *censored*ing sweet, even if we're all definitely suffering from overexposure fatigue).

Of course, my love for period piece musicals could just be showing through...

Haha It was quite surprising. Statistics aside the forum sort of feels flush with activity atm. Always nice
Title: Re: Chit Chat 2019
Post by: Coryn on July 27, 2019, 03:23:04 PM
Well, I don't know much about the Google algorithm, but it seems to me that when more actual members are showing up and doing stuff, the more guests we have attracted to the site. And it's not about big spikes in activity either. If you get regulars coming on for a few weeks, the guests begin to grow dramatically.

Also, and this is just a pet theory. But sometimes I get the feeling that when there's a really strong season for anime (as there is right now), then we see higher numbers. Ultimate theory here is that good shows are more likely to inspire artists and writers, hence we see higher rates of engagement.

But alas, I have no way to prove it.

Anyway. One thing I do know is that activity begets activity. You get people participating across the site as a whole, and others who might not be interested in anything other than their own topic suddenly have a lot more reasons to stretch their legs.
Title: Re: Chit Chat 2019
Post by: suuper-san on July 28, 2019, 07:53:54 AM
I think the anime theory accounts for at least some of the additional members. It was anime that got me into drawing, but that was long term, there wasn't any particular season or anime that pushed me into it though.

Hopefully you'll be able to get back your lost data!!
I back up virtually everything once a month to an external harddrive. I should probably do it more regularly but it's something.
If my house burns down then I lose quite a bit, should probably backup online too but Google's 15 free GB don't hold much and I don't know any other good places >_<;

If you have a second place you and only you have access to (I have my desk at work, for an example), it is never a bad idea to keep a second physical back-up there with your documents (Again, nothing like, truly important). That way even if your house/dorm/apartment burns to the ground and your google drive gets corrupted on the same day, you'll still have something to show for it all.

Taking walks is awesome. I just wish I were closer to the country side to do that. There's lots of parks here... but also lots of people haha. I like the feeling that I'm the only person on earth for miles around. c:

Same here, country walks are nice but I'm nowhere near the country haha

Also: I'm starting to get paranoid about my PC dying after Lego's mishap, so I'm trying to backup all my important stuff online, mostly arts :P
surprisingly, all my digital art only takes up 5GB

@coryn a second physical backup location sounds like a decent idea, I've heard of that before but never considered it.

My Nan passed away today, surrounded by her family. She made it to 95 but her heath started going downhill a few years ago, and the nursing home called us all up when she took a turn for the worse.
I've never seen someone take their last breath before, it cuts to the heart.
She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and was loved dearly by us all. She was a fighter until the very end.

Saw Iron Maiden last week, might as well write about it. What I do.

Maiden has been a band I've wanted to see for a while, since they are still together in their Piece Of Mind + Janick line-up and Bruce Dickinson's voice has held out. With old legacy acts like this you know what you're getting, sure enough it was a fun concert and the band sounded good. Luckily they are playing old songs so you got a good amount of the classics with an unfortunate omission of "Wasted Years" and "Powerslave". In my fantasy they would've played "Children Of The Damned" or in my super fantasy "Infinite Dreams" but you get what you get.

Still, when you hear the classic Churchill speech before "Ace's High" it's about as iconic as KISS' "You wanted the best you got the best" concert opening. and the band delivered, I perked the hell up when they played "Revelations" which made me happy, and I was surprised and excited when they played "The Evil That Men Do", to represent Seventh Son. I knew they added "Flight Of Icarus" back so it wasn't a surprise but it was great. "2 Minutes To Midnight" and "The Wicker Man" where both moments of aaaaaaah ya, same with the opening speech of "Number Of The Beast". Man they kicked it with "The Wicker Man", love that song. The best performance of the night was surprising "The Clansmen" and "Sign Of The Cross", even if they aren't songs I care for the band really kicks it when they perform them. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" was also great, I mean it's their best song also so...

Everyone got bored and a lot of people sat down, got beer, went to the washroom when they played "For The Greater Good Of God". No idea why they put that sleeper in the setlist. The band just blows through "The Trooper" like their sick of it, even if that's when Bruce Dickinson gets up to his most antics. "Where Eagles Dare" was a neat addition, but never a song I liked much. "Fear Of The Dark" was a crowd pleaser, I'm indifferent but it was good. "Run To The Hills" was of course the finale and the best fit song because everyone knows it, everyone loves it, and everyone sings the "whoooooa" part after the solo too early, even me.

I don't see concerts very often, although I'm going to see Carly Rae soon which means I will have seen every artist I can possibly see (obvs can't see BAND-MAID & BiSH) that I want to aside from Bruce. Who I can only hope and pray will perform a normal concert nearby soon. That would be going to church for me. But ya, Iron Maiden still bring a fun show. Is it anything unexpected? No, these bands are so refined and chronographed that it's an art, and it's just a cool thing to see.

Post by: Manimal on September 11, 2019, 07:36:10 AM
The Carly Rae concert was real good.

I've been waiting for her to come here for 4 years since Emotion came out and it finally happened. The exact scenario I could've never guessed in a million years, but it was quite the time. We got 3rd row and as expected there where a lot of kids who all went up front against stage, but there where some other guys there around my age who understood how great Carly Rae is. It was a high energy performance, she is quite a good performer who brings a lot of quirkiness and life to the songs, she sounded great and the band was very tight.

Song selection was pretty good. She blasted through "Call Me Maybe" as the sixth song just to get it over and done with, which I was happy about, get it out of the way. The ground was quaking though from everyone jumping around, including a selection of dude bros by the stage who soon got asked to sit down. I was hoping she'd play "Curiosity" but nah. However I was really happy that she did "Cry", which was a stand-out, "When I Needed You", which I didn't expect, "Let's Get Lost", I love the song and didn't expect it to be an encore, "Emotion" and "Gimme Love". "Real Love" was great as the first encore, and the show had a very consistent and fun vibe throughout.

As soon as she played "Run Away With Me" as the third song everything came into place and it was all good to the end. There where some songs on Dedicated I don't really like such as "Happy Not Knowing" and "Feels Right", although the latter was a good performance. "Want You In My Room" was a good fit and "Everything He Needs". Though personally I'd take "Making The Most Of The Night" and "All That" over them any day. "Fever" and "Store" stood out as, generally great songs, but good additions. I was praying for "Roses" but you know, you can't get it all. "Party For One" and the last song "Cut To The Feeling" brought a ton of energy to the whole place. In general there was just a good atmosphere and feeling throughout the show. Carly Rae was animated and the keyboard dude broke out the sax, got really low during "Let's Get Lost".

It was a good show, happy to have finally seen her. I've been having to explain to people why she's great and worth more than one stupid song for 4 years, anytime I mentioned her because people always thought I was joking or where just like "what other songs does she have?", so there was something just great about finally seeing her and having it be such a good concert. Like...ya. I dunno, good stuff.

Crazy that there kids in the audience who either weren't born yet or where too young to remember when "Call Me Maybe" came out though. That was a crazy thought I had, like...not an "I'm old" thing just a...wow...generations.

the Photobucket curse finally caught up to me today. All my past images that I posted with that as the host are now super low quality and watermarked, so that's about the first half of my topic's pages. When everyone started complaining a while ago, I wondered why my images never got watermarked, but now I see they were just getting round to me :/
not sure if I want to update everything or not, shouldn't take too long to update to imgur or something, but leaving the images as they are is a real annoyance to my OCD.
darn.

at least I have my topic backup which has all the uploaded images in order so I dont need to find them. who would have thought it would come in handy 2 days after mentioning it on MR (http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,6713.msg301934.html#msg301934).
