Title: My first time drawing in years
Post by: EffulgentFirefly on April 11, 2018, 07:50:45 PM
I'm not good at art, and I've never been good at drawing, no matter how hard I try, so I obviously gave it up for writing. Someone suggested I try a more graffiti-esque style though, so I thought I might put up my less-than-amateur work somewhere. It's not great, but it was nice to try and make something after a couple years. Maybe I'll see if I can get good at this style sometime.

*I took it down for now; if I actually do start drawing again I'll put it up with whatever else I've done.

Did you post the art here?

It's a little small, but it's there.

I do like what I see, but the details are lost with the image size. Although graffiti art is definitely a legitimate style. Best of luck with it.

Well, too bad, I suppose. It's really awkward to try and post with my phone, and my time is limited, so maybe I'll put up my work if I do more of it and I have more than five minutes and it'll show up haha.

Well here's what I've been doing instead of catching up with camp nano.

READ-This is the first one I did.

ALTF4-I used a different set of markers on this one and did a half-assed job as a result. The letters were pretty good compared to my other ones though, so I'm kinda disappointed the colouring messed up the whole thing.

AWOL-Long story short I got lazy and decided not to colour the letters, which doesn't look too bad, I don't think. The A is too close to the W though. Ignore the image quality, or try to.

M.I.A.-This one is ok. It sums up what I'm bad at and what I'm okay at in a single image, basically. Just like the ones above, the image is pretty bad, but I'm not taking another lol.

Let me know what you think, I guess. I haven't done any visual art in at least a couple years, so this might just be a once every few years kind of thing. I'm really not much of an artist.

These are some great works, Effie.

If I had to pick which one is my favorite, I would go with READ.

Thank you! I've had most of the people I've showed my art to say the first one is the best, so I guess I just gotta figure out how to capture that same effect haha.

Dude those look great! I wish I could do stuff like that. It'd be one step towards my dream as being a badass parkour graffitti artist.

Thank you. :) I think that's a dream most of us have to be honest, maybe we'll get there at some point :D

Another one I did for a friend's birthday the other day. I was going to do one for each of the main characters of my YA series, but their names are really awkward for a graffiti-style drawing, so I've gotta come up with some new words.

Anyway, here it is. My lines are still super shaky D: and I had to cut off the side part to keep my identity safe

Got to keep that secret identity a secret. :ninja:

So how long will it be until we start seeing these on trains. ;)

Maybe when I have something deeper to tag than the word 'read' lol also gotta get approved by the city because I'm a goody-two-shoes law abiding citizen and all that jazz. Vandalism is bad, my dudes  :noyoudon't:

This was mostly to get me back into drawing, especially so I don't forget how to do certain things. Lemme know what you honestly think!

Ayo, get your bars up!

I actually made use of the expression tunnels (free graffiti legal zone) on campus before I left, except one of the bigger boys left me a tag saying "only one hit plz bro".

It is absolutely a legitimate art style, and I see a lot going on. Just a few things to keep in mind when working with graff in particular:
>Line thickness must be consistent unless you're going for a distortion.
>It's all about making those shapes smooth.
>Parallel lines are hard. Practice them regularly.
>Focus on regular blockbuster and bubble letters before working in kinks and overlaps and extensions. Believe me, that's helped me by far.
>Gotta tag it before you can throw it. Make sure you can write the word how you want it before you try to block it out, flesh it out, however you do.

Sorry if my crit style is different with graff than with regular art. It's a whole nother community, mate, and I feel the straightfowardness in my veins when it comes up.

Nah, all of that is completely right. It's all stuff I should be improving upon, but am too busy writing to worry about haha. It's good to hear it rehashed, though, because if I decide to make this more than a few pieces then I gotta do it right. Thanks for that : D  Right now lines are giving me absolute hell because of my shaky hands, so that's probably first on the list to get right-whenever I next take a break from the endless task that is my writing, at least...

All good mate. If your hands are shaky and it's throwing you off, it can help to draw with your arm/elbow instead of the wrist. It can also prevent hand cramps, in my experience. That's something I noticed when I started doing some big perspective practices. If you keep your wrist still, you can achieve straighter lines over longer distances.

Thanks, I'll try that when I draw again! On a similar note, I didn't really realize until recently but my hands are always frigid, which is how I like them, but it's really difficult to draw or write or play instruments with hands that are ice cubes that refuse to melt, so if there are any tips for warming up your hands fast, I could definitely use those too.

I usually cross my legs and put my hands between my thighs. Tends to warm them up pretty quickly.

This sometimes happens to me. I run a sink of warm/hot water and just soak my hands for a few minutes while flexing them, or have a drawing session after a bath or shower when you are still nice and warm.

this works too :P
or your armpits if you can bare the cold :P
