Title: What's Your Process For Environment Concept Art?
Post by: geassstudio on January 15, 2018, 10:48:10 AM
Hey guys. I'm interested in hearing about your process in conceptualizing art for key locations and settings in your stories? Do you use references, purely your imagination, etc? And how do you know when you've figured out the perfect look and feel for those places?

I try to think what the story needs and find references that relate to it but not looking for exact references though.  Sometimes if i can picture the composition in my mind i just skip references.

I don't quite get the "what the story needs" part. Can you share an example or case to help me understand a little better?

I usually go off of references to make sure I get shapes right. Architecture itself is pretty difficult so coming up with my own original ideas would be even tougher. At one point I did consider making parts of towns in 3D just so I can render them into backgrounds.

If its key location.
Where your story takes place?
Is it in the past or future?
what's the history of the place? Who built it? Is it new or old? Who lives there? Whats it used for?
I think about this things.

I have an idea about where my story takes place and how it looks. Doing some concept sketching, the idea will get clearer.

"what the story needs,"I think it means if chapter one of your story takes place in a dojo, that means your story needs a dojo. You can go from your head and what you want the dojo in your story to be. Or if you want it to be a genuine dojo look up references, do drawing studies, read about dojos.
Have fun with it.

So if your story takes place in a castle then you would look up castles and you would want to find references on outside and inside of castles.  You might add some of your ideas to the castle which is where it starts to feel like pure creativity but in reality you used a base and added stuff in.

So if I wanted a certain key location in my story to be based off of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it'll simply help to look up pictures of the ins and outs of the the Tower of Pisa but as a foundation really.

I just really like how in Legend of Korra the buildings in Republic City are basically buildings you'd find in real world places like New York added with an Asian aesthetic twist with their roof styles. It's such a simple yet effective way of getting across a fantastical place but for some reason it's just not getting through to me when I'm sketching ideas which eventually leads me to putting too much unnecessary time and effort on one thumbnail on account of me being over-analytical and over-critical about things.
