Title: If you were on an island...

Would you eat an insect first or a human?

Well you gotta go with insects first of course! Then if things get dire and you can't trust the other person...there is only so much you can do right.

Well I mean humans have more meat, but specifically, are children present? It's a known fact of the meat industry that as pork or beef ages, it becomes too tough to eat, so I would assume something similar for humans.

That sort of morbidity aside, I would have to study what insects are poisonous and which are not before I would think about chomping on one, but I mean, I've eaten scorpion before, so I guess this question has already been answered for me. :sure:

This is before I do any research and just use the information from television and movies. No life experience on this one.

I think like 99% of insects and arachnids are edible.

Venom can be ingested and not harm you. Poison is what kills when ingested.

If you dig, you will find a butt load of bugs, no matter where you are. Except Antarctica.

More protein per gram is found in insects compared to humans.

So, I will eat a human because that is the only time cannibalism is socially acceptable .

I mean, if it comes down to it, insects all the way? Like it's not a hard choice I think? I hope?

@Forlon: it's only socially acceptable if it's the ONLY way to survive. By the rules of the thought experiment, your still a monster.

How do you plan to eat when you see something like this?

When the time comes. Humans will end up looking this when you suffer heat exhaustion and hunger.

Remember, this is before I do any research. Everything I learned is from TV.

I don't know man, there's a big mental leap there. I've gulped down nasty food before, don't know if I can get over the hurdle of "this used to be Dave".

But ultimately, no one knows how well they will behave during crisis until a crisis actually hits. So it goes.

As far as bugs go, burn 'em to a crisp and throw some spices on 'em and call it a night. You'll probably be all right.

But for serious, though. Don't try it with anything poisonous. I hear crickets are usually fine, if you can catch 'em.

Grubs too. Not much to go wrong with grubs.

I can't imagine that their texture would be all that pleasant going down...Like, could you grind them up and sprinkle them in applesauce or something?

From what I've heard, they're like, very juicy if eaten live, but are like crunchy little nibbles if cooked. No word on if it improves the flavor or not. But there are quite a few cultures who eat bugs on the regular. Protein is protein after all, and if you're body knows it's there, then you'll find a whole new love for them.

Reminds me of a story of a guy who was lost at sea for several months. He grew an intense love of fish eyes, because they are full of nutrition, and his brain was all "more of that please".
