Title: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2017
Post by: legomaestro on February 21, 2016, 07:06:32 AM
So since the Writer's Anthology is being delayed, I thought we could talk about how we could get this done people. For now no plan for a release date or anything, but we need to think of how to get our own anthology published. Please discuss.

Please say if you are interested in joining on this. The Anthology is a non-profit collection of drawn manga from all skill sets, so long as there are complete one shots or first chapters of your stories.

Because the Writers' Anthology couldn't meet the January deadline and will be released in Summer it actually means we have time to consider an Artists' Anthology now!

So first things first:  I have no idea how to format pages to fit when printed without being cut out. Text is much easier for me to do but when it comes to printed pages I'm a complete amateur. Help on that front would be appreciated.

Is anyone interested in helping out on this on the administrative side?

Also, participants! This is a chance to get in the game. Please feel free to post. This is a community thing so whatever skill levels you have you are welcome to join in.

As far as I can see 100-120 pages is okay for an anthology so I think there's room for quite a bit of posts.

I'm volunteering as an editor in terms of seeing spelling and dialogue errors in submitted comics.

Welcome aboard then Killer B. A collaboration you mean? Haha that would be fun. I did do a collaboration for the other one as well anyways.

I think I'll update a list for people who are interested just to see how many entries to expect and stuff.

Hhhhm. I'd certainly like to have one of my comics in this however if I think realistically it's going to take a whole lotta work to get we'll say in the range of 12-20 pages fully inked and actually you know....professional to a slight degree...I will say I don't know about this. Most likely not but perhaps if I can think of something good to do and feel like really doing good work then maybe.

is this contain how many page for a story for each member that would like to put their works here hha just wanting to know so the other member will know also if theres a limit pages oh and also any genre is allowed?
Title: Re: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2016
Post by: legomaestro on February 21, 2016, 09:18:57 AM
Both . When someone is sure that they are taking part they will be completely accepted when we see a full chapter done (at least a first draft). But I will still record people who are interested.

This is very much in the beginning stages and mostly a discussion. It won't be easy to reach the final look but we might as well start a discussion on how the next artist anthology will be made.

It seems that there were inkers on the team for the last anthology for those who need their work inked. If someone is up to helping with that that'd be cool, but I think in general people should be willing to ink their own works.

Title: Re: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2016
Post by: Manimal on February 21, 2016, 09:31:42 AM
I wouldn't like someone else inking my stuff, my comics are all about my personal touch and it would be lost in that process. But it's a cool idea the Anthology, I love the idea of having a book with one of my shorts in it. But I'd really have to take my time with this, especially on inking and...toning...oh the horrors of actually putting in more then half an ass!
Title: Re: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2016
Post by: Coryn on February 21, 2016, 09:37:58 AM
well remember you don't need to do a full 20 page submission. we've just got a total we're trying to reach, and can always work within that to fit in more people
Title: Re: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2016
Post by: legomaestro on February 21, 2016, 09:39:24 AM
Yeaup, and there is nothing stopping people from submitting a 4 koma. There's plenty room for that!

@Manimal Bahaha 'half assed.' I'll use that one day.

And yeah, I thought so too. Even inking has its own style, and I will try to tone my work or make it look clean as best as I can, but I am nowhere near emulating the professional mangaka looking style.

And that's what I hope for. I actually want this to be as communal as possible. Not that we make something bad, but the main aim is to have a finished work done by the forum and for the forum... At least until we get better at doing this.

@Killer B yeah sure, if you have anything just say the story name and I'll put your name up.

Remember even if you say you're interested and can't do it later it's okay. Just be clear with everyone here about if you're busy or something and we'll simply switch out the names.

So I can put your name up there Manimal?

Title: Re: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2016
Post by: Manimal on February 21, 2016, 09:50:40 AM
Well, I'm not making any commitment yet. I have so many artistic ambitions right now that I have to get in check. I have to finish Larry Pine first things first, but I really need to get my art style together and do something to improve my art's stiffness. There is also so a lot of other stuff I want to do, I had overly ambitious ideas for Love Live themed prints that came back to me. But having so many ambitious leads to nothing.

In summary you can put me down but put a ? next to my name.

Yeah sure dude. This isn't happening tommorrow like I said, but general interest and feedback is appreciated. I'll put you up with a ? as requested.

@Killer B ah I haven't heard of that one haha. Will be looking forward to hearing about that one.

This is a really cool idea. So whats the minimum number of pages you would need and maximum submitting deadline if we want it done for summer?
Title: Re: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2016
Post by: han ki-tae on February 23, 2016, 11:53:02 AM
I will answer at the end of March. If that okay?

If I don't have a full story to submit I will have concept art and random drawings. Would that work?

Title: Re: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2016
Post by: legomaestro on February 23, 2016, 12:11:39 PM
I think there would need to be a maximum of 25 pages or so. It really all depends on how many people are submitting. As of now I can't tell if it's too big or too small so there's no need to worry about that. And even 4komas would be nice to have in the anthology.

Yeah han ki that's fine. This is not going to happen very soon. Just a discussion for the beginning of the project
Title: Re: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2016
Post by: Gabryel on October 01, 2016, 06:30:38 AM
Oh well this looks kinda abandoned lol Still had to sneak a peek. I guess it's not happening 2016 anymore, but maybe next year? If so, I'd raise my hand for editorial stuff and cover. No idea if and what kind of story I could contribute other than a fre pages of Manako, but since that's probarbly gonna be printed on it's own its most likely not the best of idea. Maybe I can find a small story I can put into a simpler form (the shading of Manako is too time-consuming). So, any people left who want to do anything?
Title: Re: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2016
Post by: legomaestro on October 01, 2016, 07:49:46 AM
Yeah pretty much haha. I don't know what I was thinking with June 2016. But Hasith did directly warn me.

Anyways I'll clean up the original post a little, but we're looking for participants all the same. But it's a community thing so we can't promise anything other than just having fun hahaha. Sounds cheap but that's the way it is.

I'm actually interested in this now and will be entering it. Killer B is as well. If you jumped on too that'd be great !

Heh heh, again I love this idea. I really want this to be a thing but it's been hard to get something going. I'd like to do something with Lego again, that sounds fun. We could as well think about something the stories have in common. Like "vampire stories" (but seriously let's not do vampires) or one returning character, same city or something. I'd prefer something urban fantasy :P fantasy backgrounds are even harder than real ones.

Would love to see it happen. If my campaign for Manako goes well (and if I don't fail to organize everything coming afterwards!!), I'm willing to help with my kickstarter experience :) Let's do this people :D

Haha, indeed. If we have this many then it could be an anthology with quite a bit of content.

As for genres I'd rather people have the same amount of freedom as the earlier anthology, so that people feel free to make what they want so long as they stick to the forum rules.

Hhhhm. I'd certainly like to have one of my comics in this however if I think realistically it's going to take a whole lotta work to get we'll say in the range of 12-20 pages fully inked and actually you know....professional to a slight degree...I will say I don't know about this. yeah, i was worried cause the story i had archived involves the use of drugs as a core plot element and the rating system still puts drug use under R (even though i dont see why really, it should be PG-13)

June next year, but tbh itd be ideal to just start working on them pretty much now and have them completely ready for submission. Hunting down contributers during the last hour is really frustrating for an anthology, and no one feels like doing it until the other person has started... And that person is waiting for the next so yeah.... But yeah June sounds right

Rather than trying to stick with a particular year for the release, would it make more sense to just label this as "Vol. X", and not have to worry about making these projects annual affairs?

I'd love to get on board here with a few single piece illustrations, but there's no way I'll be able to produce anything Good enough to contribute in the next few months. My thought was to just continually accumulate content, and release new volumes as the material becomes available.

We tried that once.

Once.

But really, by the time we had enough, there were people who were no longer active and couldn't provide necessary information (the finished version of the submission for instance). So really better to keep people on a schedule. They'll never start otherwise.

Single art pieces are welcome though. We've thrown in several in previous anthologies.

I have a question: is there a page number requirement or limit? Sorry if you already answered this, I didn't see it  anywhere... ::)

20 is traditional, but if we go with digital release this time, that could be subject to change. Lego has researched it more, so he might know more than I (assuming that copyright issue was sorted)

Title: Re: Mangaraiders Artists' Anthology Discussion 2016
Post by: legomaestro on October 04, 2016, 07:03:13 PM
More like taxation and legal issues that were (and are) impossible to maneuver through. To set up a print-on-demand service it seems I needed to fill out some american taxation forms, so I'm not going to bother touching that until someone is sure they can have something set up. Not even sure how Hasith and Cory got the other anthologies worked out.

It would be great to have a print version, but that's just not practical at the moment and not worth the headache. It seriously frustrates to no end. Even Amazon wasn't as easy as advertised.

Wohoo Nair joined the fray, and K-Seki I hope?

Yeah pretty much Nair. No schedule does mean in an ideal world we have a super productive time and have 2 anthologies ready for release, but that's how great and prepared the Writers Anthology took and even that was just rushed out in the end because it was in limbo for too long. Deadline has sorta gotta exist, but I'm starting to think we should have other print projects other than just the anthology alone. More doujin for the site in general. But that's for another topic.

thank you!

Im not sure when the list will update,
but is there a way for the members who are participating to gather??
It will make submission easier.

if we dont have enough member participate,
I think its better to recommend a short 1 epsidoe (10-20 pgs) to fill the gap.
although I think its more preferable as 5-6 pages.

Since this is gonna be online E-book
either 8x11 or B4 would be fine anything under 2000px tbh.

Definitely happy to have more people on board!

Well, we're going to collect the comics first and foremost, and I should've alraedy planned mine by now. Ideally we'll be able to release this on the first of june. That means everything has been spellchecked, all manga have been submitted and all that.

If there are skype groups, facebook groups to be made make them, so long as the anthology takes place.

A short update: I need synopses from the stories you guys are planning to have made into comics. This is more to see if anyone is still participating in the anthology or not than a rush to have the work done. Still, any news of progress beyond 0 pages will be muchly appreciated. Anything less is sacrilegdge!

Just joking. I haven't gotten anything done as well, but I just want to remind people that this is a project that can absolutely happen, so long as we work on it.

Does anyone else have a Discord? If not then we can use Skype to set up an IM group for the anthology to share sorrows and joys of the journey.

I already have two stories that I've worked on in case I have absolutely nothing to show. Either Penance or Narcz, but otherwise I'm planning on working on some sci-fi sword action. It's going to be a short action scene more than a storyline, and will optimistically be 15 pages if I can swing it.

Helluh there, well I thought about contributing the first 20 pages (one action scene) of Manako's chapter 2. Would that be alright? If so, I'm done :D

There  is also a set of about 10 pages I had to scrap T_T I realized in the middle of the scene that I had put a character in too early and have to re-make the second half of chapter two from scratch. So, if there is a lot of space to fill, I could contribute up to 30 pages in grayscale.

How is the cover etc going? Need any help? I think I might just have hit my goal in art style for figurative drawing / painting, so I could probarbly whip up something.

Here's my newest work, just to show you what I can do:

About the printed version btw: When I researched printing prices for Manako, I found a printing service where I could print smallish books for about 2-3 Euro per book if more than 200 pieces. It would be up to us if we can get enough people for that, it's not that expensive. It would then have no ISBN number (getting one costs about 80-100 Euro I think), and I haven't looked into requirements for selling them, but I think it's absolutely possible to start a kickstarter with like 600 Euro to print and ship them. Would be interesting how it turns out if we all used our social network for advertisement.

And I have discord btw. Never using it because I know noone who does LOL Add me to the group, I'm Gabryel#3304

Naww that's sad midsummer. But I know that feeling. I think I scrapped like 20 comic ideas before settling on one I sketched about 50 pages, and then scrapped that too because it sucked. Maybe next year - have fun in Japan!

Hello everyone~(http://www.auplod.com/u/pdaolu9ace6.gif)

I think this may be the first time I ever posted here!

I recently got back to drawing and I was thinking of maybe making it more of a challenge this time around, but I cannot figure out what to draw to make it more harder than what I usually draw....

Which is why maybe you guys might have any suggestions?

I haven't drawn battle scenes for a long time now, I guess I should try it out~
