My OC

Tristan

This is my character. His name is Tristan. His devilish tail is very hard and fast. He can pierce people's hearts and cut off their heads with it:

I think it's muscles need to show through more (Dunno how one does it, but that's what I can tell from what I see). But nice one there. Not sure what is happening on the bottom left haha. Those horns are huge, and the eyes look pretty terrifying.

As for changing image size I might have helped. It's better to resize it locally on your computer, but here is the code

Bottom left is supposed to be like a rock. Maybe it will be clear if I get around coloring it  :D  And thanks for the tip!!

I think Naruto has always been king at drawing landscapes. I always respect Kishimoto for that. You should check out some of the rocks he draws, could be of interest to you

That's a nice drawing, Walter.  But this guy looks like bit more hairy than the real thing. haha Do you know the first thing came to mind ? Starwars The Empire Strikes Back, That snow creature in planet Hoth.  :)

Good stuff. Keep posting more drawings!

Thanks guys  ;)

Just an experiment in trying to quickly put a background on it. Took some pic from google and used a screentone from mangastudio :-\

Title: Re: Walter's Gallery
Post by: legomaestro on February 09, 2016, 07:42:10 AM
I think posterizing the image behind would at least make it blend better. Screentone looks good on that thing though. Keep at it!

How long have you been using mangastudio? Are you using any tutorials for it?
Title: Re: Walter's Gallery
Post by: Walter B on February 09, 2016, 07:52:18 AM
Thanks! What is posterizing?  :-\

I haven't used it very much. Just made a few comics with quick sketches to get the feeling of paneling, adding effect lines and such (that hisoka vs nobunaga thing and the opium island one). I just had a quick look at screentones yesterday from a youtube video. Maybe if I save some money I could get a tablet later this year. Should make things go better.

Maybe a silly question but is there any way to have the same screentone but make it blue somehow so it fits the background better? they are all grayish.

And do you know if there is a quick way to crosshatch in mangastudio? Like if I get the crosshatching pattern from some image and then use it as a brush or a pen tip so I can add crosshatching freely.

Thank you!!!

It's a function in photoshop and the likes that simplifies colours, so photographs aren't rendered in lots of colours but only a few shades (http://pre14.deviantart.net/d1ec/th/pre/i/2011/319/0/6/posterization_assignment_by_django90-d4gbamb.jpg)

I have no idea on that front. I haven't worked with the software before. Maybe Jamie would know something? I'll point anyone I know to your question if I find them. I'm pretty useless on the digital front of things, since i've been drawing traditionally mainly

Thank you! That looks cool. I get what you mean now. I have seen a couple of online tools that "turn" a photo into a drawing in a similar fashion, I will check out some and see if I end up with something cool

You know by any chance if you can get photoshop for free somewhere?

Hey guys I have a question what is a good size for art?

On one hand you can make a pic seem more detailed by making it smaller but on the other hand there is something about bigger art that kind of impacts more. This is original size for the devil guy I posted earlier. Is it better or worse?

Not really but the details are still the same when its bigger we can just see the derails clear
Title: Re: Walter's Gallery
Post by: suuperbean on February 17, 2016, 09:07:33 AM
if the image is too small we cant see the details clearly.

and as you yourself said, it only makes the picture SEEM more detailed. its better to produce larger pictures, the original size for your drawing is fine. even larger would still be fine.

we can help you improve better if we can see your work :P

although in the most general sense, a good size for art depends on its use. ie a stamp vs a 2m x 2m poster.

Walter,

Nice drawings.

The second one - hum - just watch where the sword is coming from... It looks like a huge... I am glad you drew the shape of the sword so well so we can tell it is not that.

Keep in mind Swords can be a really cool thing to draw, and you can vary them in shape and make very artistic handles. I always google search for images to use as a reference for props, and I recommend you do the same. Props sometimes are just as important as the characters.

nice one
although i was expecting a teddy bear :P
i like the asymmetrical armor.
i think overall the picture would be better if you used less sketchy lines, and longer more confident strokes, but the style is very consistent so is not bad. good use of hatching shading, it keeps in style with the rest of the drawing :p
i think its your best drawing so far that i have seen for a while, well done :P

i like the asymmetrical armor.

Haha that was a mistake actually :p I made the shooulders and frame and only realized one shoulder was way bigger than the other one when I was inking the plates.

Quote

Thanks man. Nice catch, I had not realized that. You have a really good eye  ;)

Quote
where his eyeballs?

I made them and it ended up looking weird, like one eye was looking at one direction and the other one somewhere else, so I just blacked out the eyes. That happens to me a lot with eyes, I hate drawing them. The eyes themselves are easy to draw but you have to make both the same size and is not so easy.

Title: Re: Walter's Gallery
Post by: suuperbean on March 05, 2016, 01:03:57 PM
i have found it hard recently to draw eyes the same size and shape. make sure to keep practicing and you will get better :P
most likely the problem is the same with me, its harder to draw a curve from (right to left or whatever) than it is in the opposite direction, because your hand gets in the way and you have to use different muscles. so basically practice makes perfect :P

That's what guidelines are for man! Do you use them? It's literally the most helpful thing you can do. Yes doing eyes the same is hard but it's even harder if you don't use proper guidelines. Everyone has a different method for this but it's something to work on to give your drawings lots of shape you know. If something is hard to draw you just gotta keep trying, covering up and finding easy ways out will only hurt you later on. I am still guilty of hiding hands sometimes so I feel hypocritical but...still!

Your drawings aren't bad but they are flat, this is something you will get better at the more you draw. How long have you been drawing? Sorry if it's been asked.
Title: Re: Walter's Gallery
Post by: Walter B on March 07, 2016, 06:02:41 PM
You are right man and totally spot on about those damn hands  ;D

What are some good ways to make the draw less flat. Like shading?

Hard to tell how long I have been drawing I used to like it a lot as a kid and even had some lessons but then I just stopped. Recently this year I just picked it up a bit. Still don't draw very often.  The drawing in this gallery are basically my firsts in many years.

Title: Re: Walter's Gallery
Post by: Manimal on March 07, 2016, 06:14:47 PM
Hhhhm, well shading helps alot yes but you have to work on good construction. So again that's where guidelines and different angles, and all that good stuff comes in. I wish I could help ya but I'm an awful teacher. You can check out Nsio's tutorials they're pretty good and have helped me in a couple of ways.
http://nsio.deviantart.com/gallery/45894768/Tutorials

Again I wish I had more to say but I...don't. As for the last part, I figured it was something like that. In this case you're just really starting out so try to avoid all the bad habits and short cuts while you can!

This is a very special one. These are characters for a comic I drew when I was a kid. I was very young I don't remember how old I was but I think these were the first characters I ever made. I decided to redraw them and color them (my first attempt at coloring digitally):

The hamburger could launch an onion ring. The banana could slip quickly. The meat was super strong. The carrot could become giant. The chocolate had a chain of some kind and the watermelon had a laser gun.

I remember I made several comics involving these characters. if I ever find the originals I will post them here :-)

Hello Walter :). Mangastudio has a layer system. If you do your color layers under your 'line/drawing' layers the color layer won't ruin your line layer. You can see it done in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFpLbDYNZog

Thanks. That just lazy drawing mostly -_-

I'm still figuring out the colors. I draw this traditionally and color them on mangastudio. So far I only do solid colors when possible (sometimes doesn't work with hatching) and lighter ink watercolor with low opacity so it doesn't ruin my hatching. But the colors don't come off as strong as I would like to.

I want to make awesome stuff like this but I don't quite get how it is made:

The artist kind of explains what he does but I still don't know how to do this on magastudio

Quote
(after hatching) it's just a matter of scanning the image at 1200dpi, adjusting the threshold so the image becomes solid black lines on a white background. I select all the black lines in 'colour range', cut and paste into a new layer. Then beneath this layer I start adding in all my colour layers...

I looked at it for a while. I finally saw the little man with the arrow pointing up. Then I saw the stick figure men. One had a scythe.

first I was getting a deconstruction vibe of the human body but the third hand threw me off.

It looks like you have a message within your work. Some of it looks like maps, mountain ranges, letters and numbers. I see hair on the organs.

I'm not getting a disturbed feeling but more of an unexpected acid trip.

Was there a purpose to this illustration?

Wow thank man! Glad you noticed the details! The guy with the devil tail is my OC Tristan (http://pre03.deviantart.net/a123/th/pre/i/2016/064/d/0/red_tie_devil_by_walterbl-d9u29af.jpg): the red tie devil.

Wow now that you mention it the shadows on the face of the alien kind of like like mountains, it is incredible what suggestion does.

I actually wanted to make this a bit more gritty and horror like but the colors didn't came off strong. Is there a quick way to make the entire thing a darker pallete?

thanks guys!!

wow, good but yes a little creepy :P
you can increase the contrast to make the darks darker, and adjust the brightness to reduce the light parts if you need.

This was a gag fight right?  I didn't see the lion image in the sky at first. so I thought it was him just overreacting. The joke being that the lion was miles away because of the setting differences.

Did i read this right?

If i did, it was funny.

New series I am starting: Made up Devil Fruit users. This pirate ate the Monster Blood Fruit. Monster Blood is a concept invented by RL Stine in his Goosebumps books. It is a substance that grows and grows! Ethan can turn parts of his body into monster blood and grow them to gigantic sizes.

Fruit design by me, art by Pete, another artist from mangaraiders.

Oh man I'd never even attempt to try to make a Hunter X Hunter fight. I really think he invented the complicated shounen battles. Morel's ability was a treat to see but I'd never want to think up how to counteract it at all haha.

You should do more of these man. How long did this take?

I feel like the gradient fills are too smooth for the line work - Try looking at how OPM does the toning. It's simple but effective. Also Comic Sans is evil to a person's eyes haha.

Props on this Walter!

Maybe but I it still looks nice. I think the problem is more with how Whitebeard's upper arm looks like it is coming from the top-right corner of the table and resting on it, making his position slightly awkward. The wooden table itself is well rendered.

Zim and Morty crossover would be so cool. And wait Zim got cancelled? Aw man, such a shame. Well, I still haven't binge watched all the episodes that are avaiable.

The Split Contest entry is quite visceral to look at. Really easy to tell what sort of theme is in the picture. Intense stuff.

I wonder how Saitama would fare against DF users.

I like how your colours turn out in the pictures: They're not overpowering and do a good job of showing what material is being drawn.

That lion really wanted to end him. I'm surprised Tristan decided to reach a peaceful conclusion rather than cook him alive. Unless it's a collaboration and you're not allowed to have a winner? In any case I could follow the whole thing pretty well, and I liked the colouring styles of both.

I didn't expect to see snow at the end though.

You've actually participated in OCTs. Man I wish I could take part in one at a point. Sounds like stupid fun.

OCT are fun. It would be cool to have one here on mangaraiders at some point if enough people are up for it.

By coloring styles of both u mean traditional and digital? It was all made by me (expect the devil in the cover). I just colored some pages with colored pencils.

That last one looks like a children's book illustration, and I mean that in a good way, because the colors are kind of pastel but they still really stick out and draw the eye around the page. It's good composition.

Haha like the songs you pair up your characters with Walter, and you really have a knack for making them recognizeable.

Geh, feel terrible about the H x H collab thing. It must be done... Some day lel.

@Thanks Lego. Yeah, I haven't done much of the HxH collab either, kind of busy ATM. Right now I am busy with work so I am just trying to get my drawing skills sharpened. Later this year I will get a tablet and hopefully make more time to start getting seriusly into comics.

I can't wait to see some of your digital work once you do get a tablet. This is a fantastic start and I always appreciate analogue work. I've been real out of touch with anything that is non digital lately so I think your drawings are awesome. You also have some great ideas in your work, I could totally see Game of Yu Gi Oh being a pop art piece and showing up in an art gallery somewhere haha.

@walter do you mind spoon feeding me the free trade political cartoon?

Fair trade (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_trade), not free trade.

It refers to the inherent disadvantage in the trade between first world industrial countries that sell technology and thirld word countries that sell commodities.

You know how much a colombian coffee picker makes per day? About ten dollars. And he picks on average about 70 kilos coffee.

10 dollars is the price of two Chocolate Mocha in Starbucks. Think of that. You have a couple of drinks in Starbucks, and you have already spent what one farmer in a thirld world country earns in an entire day.

Your "Choose Your Own Adventure" comics are an awesome idea! It would work very well as a webcomic.

Trick Candle Greg looks OP for some reason. I fear him more than scarecrow.

Who is Ankur exactly?

The office humour ones earned some chuckles. Good stuff there Walter.

Love the continuiation of the Choose Your Adventure. That skeleton was a toughie.

Love how recognizeable your characters are. Sasuke turned out pretty well. (I'd choose Zoro because of bias, but otherwise Gary Stu Sasuke would win I suspect.)

Ankhur is some archer made by another artist for a OCT in Deviantart https://walterbl.deviantart.com/art/Thievingcrowoct-739649719

I really like those office humor stuff. I get inspiration from Dilbert (http://dilbert.com/). His comics are fantastic.

I just read the conclusion to the CYOA game. Oh gawd I wish these picked off on the forum. I've always needed the practice in churning out pages regularly. (Cough cough the HxH collab?)

How is Tristan doing these days?
Title: Re: Walter's Gallery

I actually did some traditional pages of the collab last year, but I left them in another country  :( Gonna see if I can get someone to scan them and send them to me and I wil show them to you. But I was thinking of redoing it in digital anyway.

Been a while since I did any comics with Tristan. He is gonna get angry at me  >:(

I would choose Dodge because gotta save that chakra ;) Unless the beams are homing I have no idea who Kakuzu is :P

also are they trees in the background? I'm wondering why they are faint and wispy? although it certainly feels more backgroundy than being a solid colour so hmmm.

Look at me, trying to apply science to f8ckin--Naruto battles. I was thinking that if the contents and chakra of Deidara's clay bombs then they would react similarly to other explosive materials when in contact with things like fire or lightning. Oh well. Looks like it wasn't a horrible idea anyway.

I probably shouldn't continue to contribute since I clearly forgot everything about how Naruto works, lol.
