Title: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on September 29, 2015, 08:35:14 PM
I will be posting updates on the actual editing process of the MRWA, and here is a sketch list and table of contents.

We are aiming for a 100-110 page anthology, which rounds out to about 50,000 Words.

No need for daily updates or anything but anyone shortlisted here please notify for any major page count changes, and be sure to notify us if you won't be able to submit a story after all so that we can prepare.

As a preliminary date we're aiming for early January 2016 as a release date for the anthology. Ideally, editing will begin in December, but don't worry if you still have work to do by the end of the year.

This should ideally be the last postponement date, so I already have back up stories ready to post to catch up any slack, but I'm sure we'll have the needed amount of entries by then. That's just worst case scenario

1 - Specify if you want your name published or your username
2 - If you make any updates post here or PM me.

3 -
"Estimated Anthology Price"
https://www.createspace.com/Products/Book/#content7

Yeah.

So for a 100 page anthology each copy will cost 2.15$. Shipping costs vary widely so you'll have to use the calculator for that.

But for the book itself it seems to be around the 2-5$ range (5 for a 370 page book if I read correctly)

So it seems reasonably affordable so long as shipping doesn't screw you over.

I think counting No1sey's Entry and the other chapters we'll reach our goal! Others may have to cut off some of their chapters if it goes too far but let's see what editing magic I can do.

Still waiting on confirmation from 2 more authors I believe.

And the question of artists is still open. No rush but don't forget to say whatever's going on!

Yeah count me in, my entry will be a re-written version of "Storm Clouds and Silver Linings" and I reckon it'll be around 8-10 pages, but if you need the whole 16 filled then I can work something else out.

I've got a short story that I wouldn't mind trying to put in, if it's not too late and you have the time to look it over?

Well i'll add you both then. How long is your short story N... Er... Very serious adult?

I sent you the short story on Skype. It's 12 pages on Microsft Word's default 8.5 x 11 inch format, but who knows what converts to in your EUROPEAN units of measurement. Probably a few dozen degrees Celsius at the least.

Sounds good. I've also recieved Nair's complete document, so I'll start working on the actual document. Paste in the complete works.

I'm going with the alphabetical order as the submitted stories appear in the anthology board to make things simple.

Got a 100 page document in my Google Drive that I'm working on

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4ZeoXf90O9xc2NsTEV0VTJsd3c

I've started up a Google Doc too but am too lazy to format it properly let alone figure out how to share it at the moment. But in any case all stories (whether complete or not) have been stuffed into the document.

With No1sey's entry and the completion of other works I'm expecting 120 pages for the anthology. Ther'll be some hemming and hawing of course but I think that's the realistic expectation .

QUESTION: Do we indent for paragraphs or jump a space? Because that will impact the page count by quite a bit. Indentation would save tonnes of pages.
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: NO1SY on October 22, 2015, 07:17:20 PM
I hate indenting... but if it's what needs doing then it's what I will do!

I'll vote "indents"

Okay, updated the estimated amount of pages for both stories and it's looking around 120 pages. I think it's safe to say that so long as the submissions come in we have our anthology participants locked in.

Liuxess, work on editing your story to submit the final version you want us to put in the anthology when ye have time

Post by: MisterSherbetLemon on November 04, 2015, 02:17:22 PM
Not sure if you already covered this Lego but will there be a specific font or size in the anthology? FINALLY finished mine and just touching it up but want to make sure I don't go over the page count as I may need to fix up the spacing a bit.

Would you be up for giving it a proof read if I send you it as it is before I fix the spacing? I don't THINK it's throwing blocks of information but an outside opinion would help.  ;D
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on November 04, 2015, 03:31:05 PM
Sure, send it to me and I'll take a look at it.

As for font we will decide on one that looks good together. Can't have the font changing every few pages haha. We could ideally choose one that both saves space and looks good to read, otherwise we'll see.

Upload it to whatever cloud storage you can, or just send it as a pm

Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on January 02, 2016, 06:04:03 PM
So Sherbert seems to have done a solid write up of his work so it's going in there. From what I see the page count is already hovering in the limits, but we still need those stories locked in people. I'd love to start editing the word document.

Also the matter of art has still not been addressed haha

Post by: NO1SY on January 03, 2016, 12:09:34 PM
Erm, so I kinda forgot to let you know... I have changed what I have been writing for this...

No longer submitting "Storm Clouds..." as I've been really struggling to re-write it into a story I feel happy with and feel is of a high standard. I feel that it's the kind of story that has to either be a really well-written LN style piece or it has to be drawn to have the effect I want from it. With the time constraints I have from work I just haven't been able to focus on it enough and spend enough time working with it to get the end result I want...

I do have a replacement piece I have been working on - currently titled "First Steps Infinity" - which is going much better (not really hard to find those balances in a Sci-Fi adventure story...), but I'd need a bit more time to write and finish it.

When's the deadline?
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on January 03, 2016, 07:30:12 PM
I was planning on the 6th January, but we can be a bit lenient I guess. I mostly need to know if liuxess is still submitting, and confirmation between you and Vacant

Just keep us posted. I was planning on real early January to get the project done, but we aren't even in the editing stage so if you can speed up the process otherwise you may have to settle for your other complete work. If this gets delayed too long it'll definitely become yet another planned for and unfinished MR project, and that can't happen haha
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: Vacant on January 04, 2016, 07:35:12 AM
Yo dude, I'm had an overhaul of Nephilim in the works, but if we don't have time for that then I can submit my slice of life chapter instead "I just want a normal School life!".

Either way, I plan on continuing to write for both this year so  it works out for me either way!
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on January 04, 2016, 08:04:07 AM
That works too actually, and we still have maneuvering time. It's great to submit your best quality stuff but I'm actually more worried about how the publish on demand stuff works! When we figure that out by releasing a reasonable-quality anthology then we can be confident on how the others work.
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on January 11, 2016, 04:41:14 PM
Okay guys, so I was thinking of what cover the anthology should have.

Should it be

1- ironically done in a bad way with stick figures by one of our artists?

2 -  Use Writer-tan

or

3

I was thinking of something on the lines of the Faust magazine covers.

Big title with some unique font and then some two or three anime characters in the foreground. Simple stuff with not much detail or whatever, depending on what we can swing

I'm going to get help from a publisher friend to edit the mass of words together soon, so I know how busy we all are but please work on getting those submissions in!

Glad you like it people! And Nair, yeaup, that was the inspiration.

I'm working with createspace and it's driving me insane. It's asking for Tax information now? What the hell are all these forms and stuff. And where does Mangaraiders exist? In the US? Guuuurgh

I'm just going to do a spellcheck to accomplish something but I'm just so useless here, have no idea what platform to use to self publish this thing.

MR is based on  US server i can tell you that much. but anything else you'd have to get from Hasith. do you really need all that stuff?

Wait, I can't even use Yo$hitaka Amano's name without getting censored? Weird. Also, I need to double-check, but I found a grammatical error in my short story, so we need to abandon the whole project and forget it ever happened.

@Coryn for createspace at least yeah. Let me ask Hasith if he knows about any of this stuff
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: Hasith on February 05, 2016, 05:33:21 AM
We had this problem before since MR is not a registered business you need to do as person. I mean in previous times it was Co who made an account in printers site and got it going. Since she was living out side of Europe Taxes was not a problem. But we used another 2 services not createspace.
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on February 05, 2016, 06:32:11 AM

And I wanted to say I plan on releasing this on Amazon Kindle because that seems to be the fastest and cheapest way

Hey dude,

I'm sorry for going MIA for so long. I'm also sorry because I haven't been able to finish either of the pieces that I said I would for the anthology...

I was wondering however, if there is still space, if I could put in Chapter 1 of my Public Enemy No.2 series as my entry instead? It's not nearly as long as the others were going to be, but it's complete and I've been doing a bit of work on the series again.

If I send you the document by the end of the week would that be cool? I might also draw a banner for it if that's ok?
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates

Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on February 21, 2016, 05:47:13 AM
2 Things on the agenda now people!

1-  Due to grand problems with the Anthology as always, there will be another delay for it.

Vacant and Sherbert have offered to help with it this time, so we're setting the publishing date for 2016. The plan is to have both a digital release and also a print-on-demand release where Sherbert hopes to sell a few physical copies other than the stuff that we'll be recieving.

There is still stuff to be done when it comes to spell check and the like, and No1sey, your submission is the last we're expecting.

The stories have already been locked in as it is otherwise so thanks for participating!

2- Names and info

Please tell us what names you'll be using for the anthology - whether your forum based name or your real names. If you also have any fun tid-bits to add to your story in the form of short notes (preferably humourous) then please say so so that we can know.

And one last thing

I'm always nervous about delays like this so I'm crossing my fingers that this will be the last one ever, because we've needed an Anthology for a very long time. However, this might give chance for people to start work on the artists' anthology!

I can't think of any humorous tidbits off the top of my head, but might come up with something...

New guy question over here.

Isn't 110 pages short for an anthology?
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: MisterSherbetLemon on February 22, 2016, 08:14:14 AM
Not really, an anthology is just a collection of stories. Since we're self publishing, we can't really afford to do an anthology with large novels.  A collection of short stories is a good way to just get our stuff out there in print.

Also since none of us have ever written something that's well known (as far as I'm aware ;)), members of the anthology can get several prints and try to give them out to spread the word if they wish. For example I'm going to get something like 20 copies and just give them to a guy I know who sells stuff at comic fairs to see if people will pick them up.
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: SomeDude on February 22, 2016, 11:49:54 AM
Hmmm...

Used to anthologies being bigger than that, giving like 10-20 people a chance to be in it. Ddn't I read that it's going to be publish on demand and not actually printed? Or maybe that was another forum...been on a few lately.
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: Hasith on February 22, 2016, 12:03:16 PM
In past we did both online version and printed version. For printed version we usually use  on demand painters. A copy costed around $4 - $8 I think. It's been a while so I don't remember exact prices.

If there are more participants, I'm editors will able to do something about that. Downside is bigger the book get unit price will be high ($5 as to first post)  and shipping cost would be high too. (total price = unit price + shipping)
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates

Yeah, the anthology can definitely grow and grow if more people submit stories, but the price will also go up.

Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: Hasith on February 23, 2016, 01:17:58 AM
Well I don't think short story wouldn't be a problem as long as you have it cleaned but and properly formatted. 2 page story should be fine. But Coryn or Lego can give you exact min-max figures.
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates

Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates

Minus shipping the prices range from 2-5, but I thought the 100-120 page range was still the safer bet.

I wonder if Sherbert or Vacant found better alternatives to createspace. That taxation nonsense was a big no for me.

If you meant me, it's barely 2 pages in Word with spacing but it's not polished. Would probably end up being 2-3 pages in Word unless I really fleshed it out. Just a quick short story.

Format it to the best of your ability, no fan fiction and at least 1 complete chapter or it should be a self contained short story.

So I added your story No1sey and spellchecked the entire document. Now all I need to do is add the stuff at the beginning - table of contents - decide on a font and then it'll be ready for publishing. I don't know if anyone is willing to quickly proofread it - 77 pages so not a cakewalk, but any help would be welcome

Send me whatever needs proofreading and I'll do as much as I can manage in between life sessions... :)

I've also been working on a kind of banner for my piece. Depending on how it turns out I might send it over to you to stick in front of the chapter if that's ok. Don't know how long it'll take to get done though...

Well the anthology is updated on the front page so feel free to take a look at it and give feedback in your own time.

If you have anything then sure thing! Because otherwise it is pretty sparse in the way of art. I know its a Writers' Anthology but still haha

Once it's all proofread, formatted and such we will look at the art side.

We would need a cover and then perhaps am Image for each story right?

Welp mistake number 1 is that my story is titled "Public Enemy No.2" and not No.1!

Is the document one that I am able to edit and save on my end or do I have to PM you Lego with all the stuff I find that needs correcting?
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates

*Facepalm

Let me make it accessible to you. Whoever notices something I'll put your name in the 'can edit' list

@Vacant that would be great if people can find something, but its' not an absolute must. Even a stylized text banner would work.

But ah! I remembered there should be blurbs added after every story. I also didn't change the author names haha

Although, the story about how public enemy #2 is trying his best to become public enemy #1 does come across as rather compelling

Hey guys, to make the blurbs simpler could you answer these questions? Then I'll just write something up.

1. How long have you been writing
2. What genres do you prefer to write
3. When did you join MR and how did you find it
4. Hobbies
5. Favourite anime character

I'll be able to make a nice short paragraph from that . If you have your own spins on the description then feel free to submit them to me, but thisll make it all easier.

Also

Make sure to read your own story (rather than read everyone elses). That way if you spot definite mistakes I can let you edit them yourselves.

Cheers

1. Been writing since school days but didn't start to try and write something I would want to sell until 2 years ago (although the first stuff I wrote was intended for a video game plot).
2. Love writing drama and fantasy action.
3. The power of google led me here back in June 2015.
4. Um, writing, drawing, video games, harmonica, pubbing and clubbing... long walks on the tropical beaches of Scotland by day dancing in der clurbs by night , what is this, a dating ad?
5.  Kenzo Tenma from Monster and Hei from Darker Than Black.

1.) I have been writing for a few years. Creative writing was something that I enjoyed in school, but it wasn't until I had spare time in university that I actually started to write anything - and that was after gaining a wealth of experience in consuming different media and writing reviews.

2.) I am most comfortable writing Fantasy, with splashes of action, adventure and comedy, but I'd like to learn to expand a bit. I like to ground stories with a bit of history too.

3.) I joined MR almost 2 years ago... I was looking for a manga-centric writers and artists community to help me get Public Enemy No.2 off the ground. MR had the most appealing aesthetic! :P

4.) Playing and listening to Music - music inspires my writing a lot. Video games. Writing and drawing.

5.) Naru from Barakamon... yeah it's a weird choice but she's stuck with me... that phone call man...

Gonna proof read my submission soon... I know I have to take out some of the panel directions as they don't make for good reading!

Any chance I could submit my second chapter also? Or would that make the anthology too long?

1. I started writing when I was 16. Just sorta' woke up one morning and decided to write a book. That was 8 years ago now, and I can't say I regret the decision at all.

2. Science fiction and science fantasy. I grew up on Star Wars and Star Trek, so it was a natural progression for me.

3. I joined MR about a week after deciding to be a writer. I just wanted someone besides myself to look at my work. To my credit I joined a tiny forum that had just started, so poor forsight there. But it has definitely been a worth while place to invest my time.

4. Writing obviously, but I also really enjoy reading and gaming.

5. Urahara Kisuke. Science and super powers always go together.

Okay, I just need Vacant, Swearzy and Frono's blurbs till I'm done with those.

No1sey, I plugged in your second chapter (had to remove the double spacing) So tell me if you like how it looks.

Anyone else who spots issues in their story tell me as much.

I like how things are looking so far. We're getting there.
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates

I need you to grant me access again XD

But yeah, I'll see how I can make it work without double spacing... When I sent it to you it will have been 16 pages total, how much did it need to be cut down by?
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on April 14, 2016, 12:00:28 PM
Haha I've set it again.

I'm not sure. I edited in the main file and it's now 95 pages - Not over the limit but fine.

If the text looks too compact we can consider adding more spacing for the final version - As an ebook printing won't be the main problem, but i'd still like to have it at 100 pages at most.

Hmmm have you uploaded the new file Lego? I can only see the old one...

Also am I not allowed to keep in my bold text and italics? You took it out of the previous version and it makes my piece quite hard to read...

OK... I've got it looking pretty much how I want it... but it takes the doc up to 101 pages excluding the front cover... I'll keep working on it to get rid of that extra page...

here's mah blurb!! ;)

1.) Since I was a teenager off and on. Only really started writing about 5 years ago.
2.) Shonen is my favourite. Theres something about long ass stories that I enjoy. Action and fantasy are great fun too.
3.) in feb of 2014. It took me 3 years to consider that there's probably other people who write manga stories in their spare time so I set out to find them :P Turns out I pretty much hit the jackpot and found an awesome community.
4.) The usual: gaming, movies, writing (its a hobby but not sure to include in a book that we've written? its kinda obvious), going for a cheeky pint, football (COYG!), socialising and all that jazz
5.) hmmmm, a toss up between Lelouch Lamprouge and Shunsui Kyoraku...oh and Dutch from Black Lagoon!

Hey Lego! I submitted a story called Deformed a while back for the anthology. Is there still space for you to squeeze me in? And since editing won't begin until December can I submit a revised version by then?
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on May 05, 2016, 06:52:58 PM
Haha that was actually supposed to be December 2015. How far from completion is your story? Because there won't be much time to do a check again after Nair posts his blurb, but feel free to post man sure. 120 pages is still within range.

Okay, jumping back onto the horse again here:

1. How long have you been writing
Since I was about seven. Writing stories came a lot later, though.

2. What genres do you prefer to write
Sci-fi/fantasy adventure type stuff. Nothing too serious.

3. When did you join MR and how did you find it
Maybe five-ish years ago? My roommate was/is a mod. Wanted to see where he was spending so much time.

4. Hobbies
Hobbies? That sounds like something people with free time would have.

5. Favourite anime character
The loud guy. You know the one.

And with that we have the whole Anthology. Aozora, please get back to me on your story dude.

I'll officially start looking into Amazon now. I think I can assume that no one will have illustrations for their story? In any case, point out any last minute changes, otherwise fingers crossed for this getting out very soon!
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates

Oh that was December 2015 haha. No problem dude. Then if possible you can just add the original version of my story
--->http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,13548.0.html

And as for the blurb:

1. I dipped my toe into writing when I was eleven years old with a series called The Adventures of Bob Gaga. I did this for a short while and then didn't get back into writing until only recently about maybe 2 years ago.

2. I like to try my hand at any genre if possible. My favorite type of story to write though is one that leaves a lasting message or theme with the readers that could be applied in their lives.

3. I joined the wonderful community of MR about 2 years ago which is also when I started up writing again. I had joined harboring the "noobie" aspiration like many others of finding a manga artist and creating the next sensational manga with him/her. Of course, expectations are much more tempered and for now, the main focus is seeing if I can get a novel published.

4. My hobbies include basketball, tennis, chess, video games, movies, Risk/Monopoly, etc.

5. Favorite anime character is Gai Sensei!

hmmm, illustrations. What shall we do about that? Should we get a cover done? I was going to get some artwork done for mine, but if no one else is it would look odd :P
Title: Re: MR Writer's Anthology 2016 Updates
Post by: legomaestro on May 08, 2016, 12:12:20 PM
I think it's better we just go ahead to keep things uniform. The potential delay from requesting everyone looks for art will be too big to risk. Heck, i'd rather offer to draw something for everyone's story to be sure that it runs on time haha.

@Aozora I'll see how the story fits in the anthology when I get to my real work station. Please make sure it's spell checked at least so that things flow smoothly. I'm actually thinking this month may be the month if things go well

*Tears hair out

The tax form thing man! The advertisements are baloney on that front! I have no idea what a WMD whatever or whatis code that they're throwing at me. Need to look for tax identification numbers as well? I'm completely at loss here. I have the draft and cover up there waiting but this tax thing is annoying. And being where I am, I'm wondering if I won't meet more roadbloacks because this land is known for being super complicated on that front.

So Coryn. In the end it might have to be you who publishes the actual Anthology.

I'll ask Hasith as well again how exactly the first anthologies went out as well

Hello Raiders.

Due to how overcomplicated the publishing process is and seeing as how it's already June, I've decided to have the Anthology as a free digital release.

This Anthology was already a test to see if it could come together and be published. And while it's a failure on my part to be able to figure out how to get it actually printed for physical consumption, I hope that we'll be able to find those methods later down the line for future anthologies. The whole mess with taxes and the like is still something that gives me more of a headache than i'd like, so Ill deal with that issue later down the line.

Besides, we need to start thinking about the next Writer's Anthologies down the line. The Writers' and Artists'. I'm hoping that things go better on those front.

I do think that electronic publishing of the anthologies is a valid method to go, so long as we up the game in terms of how they look and story content. But those are just plans for the future.

I can't mention a set release date, but keep watch of this space. Again, thanks for all your participation, and my apologies for not being able to get  it to the publishing stage.

What is complicated about the publishing process?

How expensive is it to just have some publishing house print copies of the anthology?

I have no idea, but could be something to look into. But no matter how simple the first pages look you always run into frustrating tax thingimajigs and that's frustrating as all hell.
