Title: how do your family react concerning your manga passion?
Post by: Corycaly on February 28, 2009, 05:07:36 PM
the question is simple:
how do your family react concerning your manga passion?

do they like manga?
do they reject manga?
do they think it's only a mode?

my parents don't read manga but they support my drawing.
what about your family?

Damn, my father really doesn't care... Making me angry >:( Always if I'm trying to say something about manga or a something that I've drawn (?), he just ignore it and go to another subject.... (How I feel)

My dad says he could care less - but I always catch him watching anime when I have it on the TV and he makes no effort to hide the fact that he's impressed with my drawings (probably because no one else in my family can draw beyond stick figures so we can't figure out where I get my artistic abilities from :laughing11:).

Mom is actually quite enthusiastic about it.  So is my 10 yr old nephew.  He's pretty good at drawing, too, for his age and is asking me if I'll teach him some things about drawing in the manga style.  His brother and sister are always asking me to print copies of my line art so they can color them.

My sister (their mother) and her fiancé both think I'm just weird.  But I know they only say that to annoy me.

i think after my exams and the summer vaccation i'm gonna embrace being an otaku...
currently i'm in the closet when it comes to manga/anime i don't talk about it much with my friends/family and that still will be the case...  cos theres is no point talking to people who don't get it....   but i'm gonna hang posters on my wall and stuff... lol

My dad actually said, "Don't do it! It poisons your mind!" He just doesn't understand...
My mom buys my manga for me. Once she flipped through it to make sure that there wasn't any sex, which is her only restrction. She thinks that I read and draw too much manga, though.
My younger sister got interested when she saw me obsessing over this phenomenon called manga, and she started, too. She's too embarassed to show me any of her stuff, though..
My brother occasionally teases my sister and I about manga, particuarly about Higurashi (we both like it). He does read D.N.Angel when it comes out and used to read Gakuen Alice with me.
My other sister likes the pictures, but she is so illiterate that she doesn't even like reading the little dialouge there is.
My brother mimics my dad. Whenever he sees me watching anime on the computer, he says, "Get offa the manga-TV!".
The only one who will listen to me when I talk is my manga-loving sister...

My sisters don't know much about ti at all so they leave me alone, though one of them read manhwa cause of Korean romances... My parents are quite odd though, my father doesn't know what they are really, he just thinks cartoonish type books, my mom does though, no idea why, she just does.

On a sidenote, a laughed when a cook from another restaurant was over last night and saw my volume of Shin-Chan, he said he was dirty and bad, by the way I'm Chinese and have no idea how they know about Japanese manga.

That's sad  :'(
When I think about it, if I didn't have anyone to talk or share manga with, I'd either die of lonliness or have to be put in a straitjacket.

Meh, I've had nobody to talk about manga with for two years when I first moved to this town, it was pretty depressing of course, since I had nobody around period and manga was my life, even now I place manga on the top of the list for reasons I live, extreme? Maybe to you.

Nah, not too much. My natural high is manga. I tried not doing manga for a few days. Not only did I subconsiously draw it, but there were fingernail marks on the wall.

manga is definitely a bright spot in my life two. i mean it just happens. i cant push it out. even when i have a test or something i need to study for i randomly start thinking "just a few minutes on MR couldnt hurt"

well in my family:
my brother just don't care about it it's like "meh" (count as support?)
my mother just compliment me when i'm drawing though she doesn't understand
as for my father... well he's my inspirator (spell right?) of drawing.....
i admire him pretty much.... he can draw anything include manga i remember him drawing so cool (well as long as there's a copy for him to draw)
he support me very well... helping me drawing (means critique). he also told me to go to design major but animation one though until now i don;t know if thats what i want......
Title: Re: how do your family react concerning your manga passion?

i dont know if "meh" counts as support. just apathy. and you did spell inspirator. the forum just doesnt recognize it as a word.  but it sounds like you've got a good father if he likes to help you with your artwork

My parents support my drawings but tend to get angry when I spend too much time on pc for the forum. lol
They support my cosplay project, hell, even my aunt loves to sew with me. They like to see the Clamp artbooks and beautiful manga anime pictures but they don't read or watch anime/manga.

If I tried to get my parents to watch anime I'd end up being scolded for wasting their time for cartoon crap where they could have enjoyed Chinese movies, then again, you aren't me. :laughing11:

I'd never try that, dad would get lost too quickly, and mom would turn into one of the annoying fangirls.
Title: Re: how do your family react concerning your manga passion?
Post by: matsurinoaoi on April 20, 2010, 09:03:01 PM
The problem with my parents is that my mom would be the one getting lost and my dad would probably not be interested enough to pay attention. We were watching the episode where Hughes dies, and when I told my mom that Envy had disguised himself as Hughes' wife, she was kind of like...I dunno...OMG?

mom: No-interest, though she supports me...
dad: No-interest whatsoever... NO INTEREST!!!
step-mom: -||-
sister: -||-
step-brother: Has some interest in anime... Though he calls it manga movies :3

I remember the reaction of my EX boyfriend and his family when they discovered my anime manga passion. "ooo you're still watching baby stuff?"

I carefully hide my anime passion from school parents because I'm pretty sure they'd attack it. My students know I draw, but I never gave  them my site url neither my internet pseudo. School parents would use it to follow me and since they think anime manga are dangerous and perverted, they'd try to attack or criticize me.

Every time I speak about manga they say : That's like those books you read the wrong way?
They just don't know anything even though I don't care telling them.
My drawing is not that great and they just don't say anything about it because I don't show them my drawings.

I am lucky because my brother became a fan of dbz, yugioh and detective conan/case closed manga. My parents don't know much about the manga world yet they often watch dbz anime on tv with us. They find it funnier than the usual tv news lol

They support me when I go to Japan expo manga convention, helping me to prepapre my trip etc etc

I was even more surprised when they decided to help me for my cosplay project: my mother helped me with the sewing part while my father was a big help for the making off of the cosplay accessories.
My aunt, which isn't a manga fan became a cosplay fan: she is even EAGER to start my newest project, begging me to come to her place to start sewing! oO

I must admit I am extremely lucky!

Haha, I was going to do the poll up there... But my parents have went through different phases about their opinions on manga.
At first they thought it was just another teenage thing (a little weery about the violence but that's all).
But now they are starting to think everything that I buy is really perverted. They sometimes ask a lot of questions if a cover is mildly suggestive or if I'm drawing something involving skimpy clothing. :/

That's why I only see yaoi when they're not around or sleeping.

He also came in while I was reading Watashi no Messiah-sama and there was a service shot in between chapters. He saw that too.
I don't think he cares. I'll just avoid letting him see the doujinshi and bondage thats hidden on my hardrive more ecchi things.  :-X

My parents believe me to be a total pervert when I read manga and they see the cover or while I'm on my laptop my dad always has to look at the screen, he asks what I'm doing, but I know he expects pr0nz. I gave up caring of their impression on me and I just read what I want whenever, not like them knowing I read ecchi will change anything, they'll have the same view of me, just with proof.

My mom really isn't technologically attuned, and my dad loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooves his books so i'm pretty much left alone.  Besides, since my brothers and cousins spoiled their reputations so good i look completely trustworthy.  :laughing11:

But i am trustworthy. *hides in the shadows, glances this way and that*

My family is really supportive when it comes to my drawings. o.o
Sometimes it's hard for them to understand my whole anime/manga obsession. But I understand. :P
When my dad was younger he loved drawing comics and stuff.. So he understands a bit more than my mom. He's usually pretty interested in what I'm drawing.

My mama and grandma usually love my artwork...
But they don't really understand why I love it so much.
At the drop of a hat, they'll ground me from watching and reading manga but they'll still allow me to draw for some odd reason.
They say that there's 'hidden messages' in the art that relates to stuff that I shouldn't watch (probably the perverted stuff is what freaks them out the most.)

If you're talking about perverted things in anime, there are plenty of them in cartoons these days. I picked up a bunch of sexual references just watching Chowder and Adventure Time.

I was even surprised that a character from the show Doug was named Patty Mayonnaise. My eyes just lit up when I thought about it. xD

my parants are always super supportive of everything i do if my mom see's a manga i might like she'll buy it for me,
my dad on the other hand is very old fashioned, if i try and talk about a manga with him it better have a story line about an awesome drill or amazing tools for him to take interest but he's always super nice.
Im hoping to get my sister on here, she is a manga fanatic and is drawing constantly she actually was the one who got me interested in this stuff again.
My boyfriend how ever has little to no interest, but he does the "im a good boyfriend" nod when i talk about that stuff with him :)
(i do the same nod when he talks about poke XD)

Some of you people are so lucky that your families support your manga dreams because I sure that mine never would but that doesn't stop me from writing them I tell you that. I'll keep writing until my hands weak and brittle and my mind is dry and burned out. In life you must ride this thing until the wheels fall off, so I going to stay grinding for my passion. Maybe one day my family will understand but for right now I keep it hidden so I can perfect it.

great to hear your passion but im pretty sure that when you do tell your folks they will understand and admire that passion, depending on your age they might welcome it right away or wish you would use this passion towards becoming  a doctor or nuclear ficasist:P but do what you love doing that is the most important thing :)

My parents are a little weird (laughs)...
My mom reads every single manga I buy with enthusiasm and says it's cool, and just loves my drawings and likes to show off to the other moms. Up till now, pretty normal. But when she sees me reading manga / watching anime on the internet she starts ranting about how anime characters are crazy and violent and goes all "omfg wtf are you watching eww horrible!" on me, as if I were watching something extremely violent and pervy... WTF mom? -.-
My dad isn't much like that, he doesn't really care, he just wants to watch his sci-fi movies (laughs). I hate sci-fi thanks to him... try listening to tiring hours of sci-fi rants before you judge me.

My sister was the one who introduced me to anime, she's more of an anime fan, though she does read manga sometimes, my mom sometimes thinks its a waste of time and my dad doesn't care..
thing is i read manga online and my mom thinks i spend wayyyyyy too much time on the internet

Regarding my drawings, my sister's really supportive and i usually keep my drawings to myself... though my mom and friends occasionally make remarks like, "thats pretty" or "what IS that?"
thats about it... on the whole, i guess they are pretty supportive=)

In my case, my parents couldn't care less, lol  :D
They never said anything about it since I started watching anime, reading mangas or drawing things related to this (they like the fact that I draw because they see it at something "productive"). I remember that their only complaints were related to the amount of money I used to spend buying mangas and artbooks. But since it was the money I got from my own job, they didn't complain much, only said that it would be better if I saved some. But I continued buying anyway xD
I remember that, once, my father accidentally saw some yaoi mangas that arrived by mail and one day both my parents saw a blog where I posted reviews of yaoi mangas, mostly, with images included (lol) and the only thing they said was "ooh, we saw your blog, it's nice", and I just wanted to break a hole in the wall and hide my face in there, haha, it was embarassing. My father even asked me someday, out of the blue: "do you still read hentai?" (for him, yaoi = hentai, lololol). It was funny.

The most interesting thing is that my research at the university is related to mangas and this way I could show them that mangas can even be an interesting study subject and I could prove the same to some of my teachers. I'm proud that I like this part of japanese culture and I don't hide it from anybody. Instead, I try to show them its importance and what they're missing  ;D

[Sorry for English mistakes, as always]

Before I found what I truly loved to do (drawing manga, of course!) I had a bit of an obsession with pleasing those around me with what I did. It only ended in sadness and constant frustration. What I learned from this was that a passion/hobby is something you should do to make yourself happy without concerning yourself with what those around you think. So, do what you love and follow those dreams! ^-^

Anyway, as for my family... It's a mix. Only one of my close family members actually likes anime/manga, but even a few of those who don't still respect/support my art. They don't support manga directly, but they support my art itself.  However, some of my family members are strongly against manga. They'll say my art is good, but I can tell they don't really support it.

He watches sport a lot and is VERY stereotypical.  Was watching despicable me 2 and he said "your almost 18 and your watching cartoons", and he wonders why I dont talk to him. As long as I just get good grades and concentrate on school, I can watch, read and draw manga as much as I want to, in her opinion :D My dad loves Pokemon or just cartoons in general, so I suppose his fine with it ;) My older brother on the other hand thinks it's weird (except for the drawing thing), and think I should do what other teens in my area does. So I was on my own on this journey but I stumbled on  this site so i am getting some support required. So its going great!!!!

My dad loves Studio Ghibli and anime in general; he bought me and my sister our first manga drawing book (The Complete Guide to Drawing Manga) and buys me manga for my birthday, which is awesome. :D My mum thinks we're all odd reading manga and watching anime but she supports my drawing, which is also good. My sister thinks I'm kinda strange but likes my drawing (she isn't into manga like I am), and my little brother's too young to care. The rest of my family don't know, but I'd probably be treated as a freak by my cousins and their mother and father, and it's gonna be revealed someday. :) Ah well. . . I never liked them anyway.

Well I moved out so my family don't really know what I watch or read now, but when I lived with them and I was getting into it, it wasn't like I'd sit in the living room and watch it. Since Anime is pretty much non-existent on UK TV, you can either buy the DVD's or watch it on the internet so thats what I've done. I've broken mine down, since I have a few siblings.

My youngest brother likes Anime, but since we don't live together, we rarely discuss the topic or watch anything together. It's more along the lines of "Have you seen.....?" "Yeah it's good".

My sister doesn't care. My older brother doesn't really care, but he did like pokemon, DBZ and still watches that so I bet he would like it if he delved into the world of Anime.

My oldest brother saw me watching  a Death note DVD one night. He loved it, but I think Death Note is one of the few that can cross the "border" in that it's not just for anime fans.

My mother thinks Japan in general is an odd place. Can't argue with her there tbh, but then everywhere has its oddities and bizarre customs. She also thinks Anime is too violent and a bit twisted. I would argue, since it is in a cartoon form, blood and gore will be taken over the top, just because they can get away with it.

And My Father, he just thinks its cartoons and wonders why a 23 year old is still watching them.

Reviving a really old topic but I like the idea of it.

My dad fully supports it and encourages me to keep going.  We have a deal that if I work a (full time or part time) job then I can do my art and stay at his place.  He actually likes it so much that he prints out my digital art and hangs it in his work office.

My mom on the otherhand doesn't really care too much.  I can easily tell by her reactions whenever I show her my art.  It doesn't really have to be drawn in an anime style, but she just doesn't care too much about art in general and wants me to do other things in my life.  She accepts it as something I like to do but doesn't really want to be involved at all.

My parents are divorced but my stepfather actually likes my art as well.  He's pretty much as supportive as my dad is but he doesn't try and print everything.

I did tell my dad it'll probably take several years since I started pretty late and he said as long as I keep some kind of job then it doesn't matter how long I stay.  My dad knows that when I get enough money off of my art to live off of or if I get a high enough paying part time job in which I can still do art full time.  In my family, job=being productive in life=set your own rules.

Edit: made this long post about art.  While i don't really consider my art manga, it is still heavily influnced by manga.
My family about anime/manga:
Dad: used to buy anime/manga in the past, but nowadays he ocassionally watches anime with me and that's it.  His bookcase has like 50-100 volumes of manga, and about 2 movie cases of anime.
Mom: doesn't care at all
Stepfather: watches anime quite often but never when my mom wants to watch tv (which is pretty often).  He doesn't like manga because it feels like it the missing action and color that anime has.
