How I got into art (http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,19202.0.html)

Well it looks like all my stuff prior to 2017 has been deleted off of the old imaging site I was using so I'll just post my new stuff here...  All critiques are welcome and much appreciated as it helps improve me as an artist.  If you want me to critique your artwork then just PM me and I'll take a look for you.

All these artworks are going to be in order and most of them might just be doodles or sketches.  Also the girl with the witch hat is my character, that's why I like to draw her so much

Please note that these pictures are not perfect (no one's perfect but always room to improve :D ) and i mostly drew them on plane rides so there might be silly mistakes :P

I put these in order of when i finished them so you can tell how much i improved or didn't draw as well

Right click & click 'view image' (For Firefox) on the image & then copy its url if you want to display an image from other sites that is not an image hosting site .

Thanks for posting the pictures directly to the site, I tried to do it as they said but didn't quite work. Will try again later today

So I have been drawing quite a bit just I don't think it is worth much to post it online because they are mostly background drawings (on my math homework/notes lol)

My art class let me draw something manga related for once...
Before you ask I will tell you about it...
Spoiler
Ok the 16 boxes you see is not to reduce the picture or to copy...  Pretty much every box will have a different texture (like hatching, stippling, etc)...
I did not copy from any picture reference (more like i couldn't because of bad connection lol) so everything was from my head...
The support beams on the wall have a stray line going through it...
His left foot is a tad bit small...
The random wave in the background that makes no sense at all is part of the requirement (so is 1 circle but I just made the circle a window)...
I am not allowed to put any weapons in there so he has no sword...
His head looks a little too tall...
I forgot the buckle on the strap (thought that was how the author did it but guess not so gotta fix it)...
This is just a rough draft, I did it in pen because I have to trace it onto bristol board...
The outline on the character is also there on purpose...

Your first picture is awesome! The wings are so well-drawn!

Also that is some good background work over your math stuff. XD I love sketching during school work too.

Great work!

GJ,  Matsui! The first one is really lovely,  how much time did it take you to do?

And yeah,  the second one's titan,  based on the size of the head,  could just step over that wall

These are nice... Thought I think they are a bait skinny...the perspective looks nice too...and euh, I would recommend not to neglect your math class...especially Geometry since this part deals a lot with Graphs and stuff that I think are also important while drawing

I also think you should still show some of what you call "not worth posting" ... getting advices are the best way to improve...and anyway in the end you'll be the one to decide whether to use the advice or not.

@liuxess
I looked around and found my pencil version...  It took 3 hours for the pencil version then looking at how i inked (and used black colored pencil) the second one probably around an hour and a half...  If you want to know why I used black colored pencil for dark parts it is because I didn't want to have a bunch of hatching in it...  Also color pencil doesn't smudge in my binder cover so much better than normal graphite pencil

@Nomena
I will see about getting the pictures on MR (currently have a cold) but judging proportions might be tough because they look like blocks (too lazy to put windows)...

For my math project we were supposed to solve a problem and do a drawing...  My group had me draw waves (first time for me but I did study some last year...)  Anyways I used crayons to make it and well...  I HATE USING CRAYONS, but now I have a somewhat new respect for them...

Before:

After:

...  All my hard work for almost nothing T.T...   And yea I know they look a little off (the middle one especially)  Some of it you can't see too well but it was covered up anyways -_-  Meh spent 30 mins and the paper was pretty huge...  I also don't really use colors too so that is also another new thing XD

I don't think it was for nothing at all, the waves that you drew with crayons looks nice...though it's just looks a bit  sharp especially at the tips of the waves, you could also try adding more foams around the waves in the future  :D...

Yea I do admit they look a bit sharp but most of the small splash marks didn't get in the photo...  I will be adding a  new picture probably this weekend (busy this week)

I have been drawing since my last post, never really felt the other stuff was worth posting.  In the last week my skill has improved alot.  Note this is my character design for the webcomic imma start making soon and not something copied.

I still have a long ways to improve on my inking skills tho :/

I think it is rather the pose that you should improve on first :D ... for me it look a bit too mechanical...

the body proportion seems about right and I get which pose you are trying to draw but you should think about how the joints of the body works (shoulder, elbow, knees)...for example if her left shoulder is tilted that way, it's should be more natural for the left hand to be hanging straight vertically or elbow should bend on the opposite way...and I don't think her left leg should be so profiled.

If you have a big mirror in your room then try replicate the pose you wanna draw...otherwise try replicate the pose anyways, it looks kind of painful  :-\

Hehe wow, pretty good job on this last drawing man! Just one thing to say, his left foot looks a bit weird (left being the same side the sword is). Apart from that it's pretty good man!

Feet and hands art definitely my weakness...

If anyone was curious, this is a real katana stance...  I read up on alot of sword stances and watched some fencing matches...  I really consider looking those up if you want to draw swords...

Haven't posted in a long time but here is a page that I had for my webcomic I am working on.  I found a good place to post my webcomic on but their page restrictions are different therefore this page is going to be redrawn completely.  Normally I would shrink it but I thought of something better than this view anyways.  Please note that the ocean and sky are just textures but that should be a little obvious lol.

More details could be added but I was spending too long on this page (which basically got thrown out lol).  Let me know if you guys would like to see more stuff that I just scrap

It's the only picture from last year that I felt like reuploading

Haven't posted in a long time but here is a page that I had for my webcomic I am working on.  I found a good place to post my webcomic on but their page restrictions are different therefore this page is going to be redrawn completely.  Normally I would shrink it but I thought of something better than this view anyways.  Please note that the ocean and sky are just textures but that should be a little obvious lol.
More details could be added but I was spending too long on this page (which basically got thrown out lol).  Let me know if you guys would like to see more stuff that I just scrap

City so beautiful... scrapped  :sadbye: :sadbye:   If that's what you scrap what do you keep?! (Ever consider donating something like that to the Mangaraiders collaboration for their fighting arena :hmm:?

GJ - I would be interested in seeing more scraps.

That's the thing... I don't really have any finished work...  And when I get time this weekend I do plan on helping out with the visual novel sprites

Before anyone goes to answer the question on the next post, I have already answered it by PM.  I just didn't want to have my gallery be bumped up so many times by my own replies

You one of those "my mind is too busy to focus on one piece" artists too? (I just made a batch of hamburger jerky instead of finishing a piece so I can understand if you are).

I haven't heard of Sprites - is that something being done on MR or somewhere else?

Missed that reply, it was part of the MR visual novels.  Sprites are pretty much using the same character but only changing the facial expression.  You will see them a lot in phone games.

Well my computer took a few hours to update so I posted a ton of things on my phone that I've been drawing in my sketchbook.  I'll definitely be posting more often but things you will see are a lot of are hands, feet, and noses since I'm pretty bad at them XD.  Sometimes you'll see the same character but that's my OC and I just like to draw her alot.

I'm not worried about the lines at all and it was like 6 times cheaper to get notebooks (cuz no one buys wide ruled for school anymore)

Some people find it really offensive

I'll use references to check things but I have been drawing with and without references.  When I do it from memory it's more like an exercise to see how good my visual library has improved.

Yesssss, you are someone who studies cats, tries out drawing several different hairstyles and even draws on lined paper. You're someone who works at studies instead of talking about studies. Love what you've posted here! 'Thursday for sure' is my favourite, but I'm quite interested in that cityscape you posted with textures and stuff. I've been looking for shortcuts to draw intricate backgrounds for a while now. Did you use Google Sketch?

Really good stuff MK! And I sort of feel like I haven't welcomed you to MR, so welcome to MR. Hi. I'm Lego, resident mod and artistic noob.

For the cityscape I used manga studio 5 with the perspective rulers.  Sadly there aren't too many shortcuts besides that.  If I was to break it down it would be like this:

Step 1 set up your vanishing points further than ur canvas/panel
Step 2 sketch the streets and bases of buildings
Step 3 decide the height of the buildings
Step 4 add in details to roofs/buildings
Step 5 shade in areas of darkness including the detailed parts

Tips to keep in mind for backgrounds
1) Direct your viewer's eye towards important parts
2) Be sure your foreground is always more detailed than the background

Nice arts, I love the hands/fingers training, feets and objects, this is really fantastic~
Thank you.  It's really just the practice you put in that pays off in the end

Welp another day of sketches, always doing a minimum of 4 pages even when I'm busy like I was today.  I told myself I'd keep drawing the same hand until I improved and I can already start to feel it.  You can even see that there are less eraser marks as you look through them all.

I see when you do the same hand position over and over that your linework gets smoother. That means that you are actually starting to understand the underlying shapes. That's also immensely visible in your notebook pages on feet, where you break them down into parts and start "seeing" through them.

Four pages a day is a great goal, and I support you. In fact, I might start trying to do the same. Depends on how I feel tomorrow, after probably staying up all night to catch up on what's been going on here.

Hmmm, i usually erase my construction shapes (you can sometimes see them if I forget to erase).  Maybe I'm just using the wrong ones?

Well here's a sketch dump, I usually do these before I draw anything but sometimes i just find myself sketching and messing around with colors for way too long XD.  If you don't know, most of these are going to be mostly of my character since i find it fun to draw.

Part 1 (mostly in order but I don't have dates)
I was experimenting on the eyes I wanted my character to have and the different angles
(https://i.imgur.com/PuxwZ8T.jpg)

I tried to do a semi realistic face but it became pretty desaturated and dead in my opinion
(https://i.imgur.com/40LtCPy.jpg)

Here's me just over-saturating the colors but for some reason I like it alot
(https://i.imgur.com/pAtZw0e.jpg)

Here's a pose I was drawing, my friend critiqued me and I made some changes.  The old version is on the left.

Here's a profile view I did
(https://i.imgur.com/QkauLm4.jpg)

Not much to this one, just a plain happy face
(https://i.imgur.com/uPd7Un9.jpg)

I felt like doing a 2/3 face here and I wasn't having a good day then
(https://i.imgur.com/iRkZMkz.jpg)

Here's a face when I got pretty pumped up to draw
(https://i.imgur.com/NlNGFcM.jpg)

I was feeling pretty confident on the last view since I don't usually do these extreme angles too much so I tried to do another one but from above this time
(https://i.imgur.com/kZUIjgd.jpg)

I was with my friends and they told me to draw some more faces with different expressions
(https://i.imgur.com/c3eSkgl.jpg)

Another view from below but I didn't feel like drawing any higher (or shrink) and I try to keep these on the same size canvas nowadays
(https://i.imgur.com/Vr94iWb.jpg)

This is one of my favorite sketches and feels much like my character's personality
(https://i.imgur.com/Gv8zHFd.jpg)

This one was with my friend again and I was doing a live drawing demo but I was doing it pretty fast so it's pretty sloppy in my opinion but I always like the sketchy feel even on completed projects
(https://i.imgur.com/omEfTzu.jpg)

Another 2/3 view, I like it better than the other one but I feel like I need to do something with the cheek bone.  I tried raising before to match up with the eye socket but then the face felt way too thin
(https://i.imgur.com/myz2Rft.jpg)

Another profile view, I really like drawing these both with defining the facial features and simplifying them.  I also like drawing different kinds of noses on different characters (different hooks/bridges/etc)

Part 2 (These have dates and are in order, yay)
3/12/18
Again with these 2/3 faces
(https://i.imgur.com/kpDfRjo.jpg)

3/13/18
These expressions were referenced from an amv I liked (I Ship It).  Still not liking the 2/3 face here either.

This is still the same day (middle of the night) but I was feeling a bit depressed and couldn't sleep so I felt like drawing to pass the time.

3/14/18
I figured I would try drawing the body in extreme angles, spolier: it's a failure
(https://i.imgur.com/BFkgiuF.jpg)

I tried to look up references
(https://i.imgur.com/6oFsGhx.jpg)

Still trying these crazy angles but a little less extreme
(https://i.imgur.com/dmbi6Mj.jpg)

Just trying to imagine the character in space but it's kind of hard for me to do
(https://i.imgur.com/44cRoiS.jpg)

3/15/18
Didn't have too much time but I kind of wanted to sketch out a scene with my character using magic "Shadow Claws." I know, not the coolest name but at least the claws look somewhat scary reaching out
(https://i.imgur.com/Q75MauA.jpg)

3/16/18
I've never really draw characters curled up or sitting very often
(https://i.imgur.com/2fhslul.jpg)

Just some standing poses, one on the left is confusing but I figured I'd leave it in so people can see
(https://i.imgur.com/EpMSkCa.jpg)

So these boxes were meant to be shoulder pads but because they make no logical sense it was really weird to put on one of characters
(https://i.imgur.com/ZJonyx4.jpg)

I ended up putting these on my character but now he's not even in the story because he felt like he had no actual impact on it at the time.  While I still want to add him into the story, I feel like he doesn't need to be in there untill later.

3/17/18
More extreme angles
(https://i.imgur.com/5bVmoq4.jpg)

This one I was messing around with lighting again but now that I look from afar, maybe some darker core shadows would be better.  Also I was really lazy on the hands
(https://i.imgur.com/BbWukuB.jpg)

3/18/18
I just condensed these into 1 page since I didn't draw much and they fit without shrinking
(https://i.imgur.com/REgD1mJ.jpg)

3/25/18
I didn't draw for like a whole week because I was busy with a couple other projects and a bit sick (yet my work wouldn't let me take sick days). I was looking at an artbook "The Art of Posuka Demizu" which I really liked and was feeling pretty inspired to experiment with colors.  Instead of drawing something new I just took what I drew last week and colored it.  Now that I look at it, I probably should of saturated the flame a bit more.  Another thing is I need to be careful of tangents.

Witch artists unite!

I've noticed that some of the hyperangles look a little flat. Like, it looks like you might be thinking too much from the front. It's hard to explain, but what I mean by that is that perspective has more than two points sometimes, even if theorhetically that's what you'd expect to see. Things interact with 3d space weirdly.

The best example I can draw from of this is from 3/13 under where you said "Still trying these crazy angles but a little less extreme". I think it's supposed to be a bird's eye view, but it kinda looks like a front view tilted to one side.

Definitely keep working with the box things like the shoulder pads. Moving geometric shapes in space in your head and then on paper can really show you where you're struggling.

Thanks for your comments everyone.  It's been a few months, I've been quite busy but now that i got a lot of my schedule cleared up I'm drawing like crazy (mostly towards the Line Webtoon contest).  It's kind of annoying to take every panel i'm working on since it all goes on one huge canvas.

@MahluaandMilk Now that I look back at the drawings I do admit that I was thinking way too much about 2d and not the space itself.

This first one is a green lightning cloud.  I was showing a friend how to draw it since he was super bored.  The second one is a WIP but I was going for a pretty intense scene in my webcomic and it kind of freaks me out so I feel like it is working lol

cool lightning strike effect. and very cool matrix-style polygon stuff there. as Mahlua said, its a good way of showing form, as well as highlighting if you actually know form or not :P
the facial expression on the last one is very balanced and calm, and the shading on the face is also quite good. I think maybe the hair could do with a bit extra detail since the face looks so nice, like splitting the bunches into a few extra strands.

Very nice texture on the metal

snazzy textures!
I thought the red parts was more gem-like than metal though. maybe the red colouring threw me off a little. either way very nice looks and looks very realistic with the shading. pretty good shading technique on the blob on the right as well, actually :P
the surround for the gems (thats what I've decided they are) did indeed look metallic, perhaps that what you meant in the first place lol. I think the cuts are fine. if anything, considering its armour, you could get away with a lot more battle cuts, and even deeper, as they are not too visible at a glance anyway. for shiny metal, dont forget to use a nice light flash, or some white streaks to make it look more real. even battered metal can be quite reflective, just not smoothly.

I think what's nice about your hair studies is you're showing the parts in the hair, so it helps you keep drawing hair simpler by drawing lines that originate from there, creating nice flow. Those skills are showing and they're only going to get better!

Regarding the metal armour, I think of 3 aspects whenever rendering metal
Inherent colour: Bronze is going to have a little more brown than Gold, which has a little more yellow etc

Texture/Glossiness: Used armour has been battered, so it's more matte in appearance because the once smooth surface has been disfigured, affecting it's ability to reflect light as much.

Lighting: IMO, the most important, you can kinda ignore the other two if you render metal like metal. That is, push your darks and your lights. You'll realise your eyes are convinced something in reality is metallic/glossy/'shiny when the shadow part of the metal looks really dark compared to the area in light.

How much the difference between dark and light is depends on the material/condition, again. Definitely keep those things in mind!

Yes, I was talking to my friends and that was a challenge from memory and not to use references since I've drawn so many of them in the past.

Here are some really old pictures with some year stamps.  Note: 2013 is when I first started drawing at the age of 16.  When I go back to my house in a year or so then I might be able to find some more old drawings to post. I think you might be able to tell which ones are copied vs original ideas, especially the early ones.

1000 PAGES? Not 1000 poses? You've certainly got your work cut out! After that many I'm sure you will have improved a ridiculous amount!

It's good to draw a large a range as possible to get used to all sorts of angles and foreshortening. I think drawing with themes is a good way to achieve that.

All the best for your target!
