Thank you, I find it helps me to write and visualize a story better when I create the environment it will play out in first. I was planning to add a more in depth map, with the terrain and cities in place, but I couldn't figure out a way to indicate mountains or rivers and label the cities without it looking terribly clustered. I may do a kind of zoomed in version, perhaps one country at a time, which means drawing trees and mountains  :-\

Shio was a genius from an early age and was top of his classes in Academy when he first started. But as time wore on, he quickly became bored of his lessons and his grades dropped. Shio is very easy going and quite often lazy. Given this unwillingness to study, some get the impression he is arrogant, but really it is simply Idleness. Due to a past trauma and losing his parents, Shio has a compulsive need to protect people from dying, so much so that it was noted as a Psycological defect by Academy Medics. Shio is a quick thinker and capable of amazing analysis of events or people even if only seeing them once. Shio has a habit of sweeping his hair out of his eyes when talking. He is also Left handed. Shio was ranked 12th in the final seedings for the Cadets, his rank slipping due to truancy and a lack of effort. He has shown his specialty in Magic to be the Lore of Water, which many have noted as incredible due to the sheer volume of ater he can create at one time, how he is able to do this is unknown but many say it shouldn't be feasible. He also has the spirit Zamizuchi who he does care about despite not knowing her origins and her often childish behaviour.

She is usually seen with an indifferent expression on her face. Her own attire consists of an oversized sleeveless white shirt, black cycling shorts and knee high boots. She is usually seen in her academy uniform, consisting of the black skirt, tights and the longer academy issue boots. She also wears the white shirt and jacket. Although she wears the cravate as a bow. She doesnt carry much of the equipment issued to her, namely her first aid field kit, in a pouch on her belt at her side. She carries her weapon strapped horizontally across the back of her waist.

Personality: Amber is quite tomboyish personality-wise, being similar to Leaz and Shio, in that she is quite cocky and sarcastic and is quite often seen beating them up in a comical fashion. Shio and Leaz both are scared of her when angered, although Ruby is always spared this wrath. She tends to be very vocal about her opinion and keeps little to herself. Despite the frequent abuse of her male friends, she holds them very dear to her, being grateful for them for being her first friends. She is very protective of Ruby, even with Shio and Leaz if they tease her. She enjoys photography and often admires scenery, a contrast to her fiery personality. She is also a secret Otaku, harbouring a massive stash of Manga and Anime. She is quite easily offended when anyone mentions her size, or when somebody calls her a girl instead of a woman. She seems to enjoy a drink as well, as she is often seen in bars with Shio, Ruby and Leaz. She seems to dislike it when girls give Shio and Leaz attention, whether this hints at romantic feelings towards the pair is unknown. She finished 4th in the final rankings, apparently dropping marks on the Teamwork section of her exam as she didn't work well with the group she was put in. Amber has a talent for the Lore of Wind and is the only pupil of her year to study any Dragonfist techniques.

She is probably the quietest of her friends, thus usually in the shadows of them, although she is a voice of reason in tense situations. She enjoys theatre and singing and has a talent for making drinks and cocktails, although she is a terrible cook, usually damaging something in the process. She doesn't drink alcohol as it makes her feel sick instantly, although when drunk her personality undergoes a drastic change. She becomes far louder and open about her feelings, although she does not become violent. She harbours an affection for Shio which he is oblivious to. She attempts to hide this from everyone, although Amber seems to know about it. She finished 9th in the final seeding's for Agents. This is mainly attributed to her not using her full strength when in the combat portions of the Exams in case she hurt someone. Ruby is a member of the Kuya clan, a relic of the older times of Nomia when the country was split among dozens of clans, each with their own unique lore of magic or warrior art. The Kuya's ability was the Lore of Lotus, a magic that enables the user to trigger spells via special seeds they carry with them. However, they share a friendly rivalry and often spare against each other and compete when it comes to accomplishments, such as who became a Major first and how many mission they have each completed. Although a carefree person, Merek is incredibly committed to his training, a trait he instills into his team. His training regime borderlines on the extreme and as a result, his muscle tissue and bone structure are many times denser and stronger than a normal human being. Merek relies on this, as his speciality is hand to hand combat. He has a fondness for creating monikers for people and spreading them around, as he calls himself the "Blizzard of Nomia" due to his white hair.

                                                                                                    A Note on Soul Power

In the Heavy Rayne universe, there are many supernatural abilities and creatures that exist. These are all made possible by what is known as "Soul Power". Soul power is a mysterious energy that all humans possess. By using this energy, Humans are capable of utilising magic and increasing the potential of the body to superhuman levels. Although every person possesses Soul power, not all can necessarily use it.
It is not a natural skill, it must be tapped into by a Mage, an ancient bloodline of magic user's who are able to use their soul power from birth. Soul power is made up of two things, the Soul spring and the Soul spike. These originate of course from a persons actual soul. They represent the amount of renewable power which can be taken from the soul.
In the Heavy Rayne universe, the Soul is more or less what it represents in Christian theology, being the true essence of a person, which will survive even after death and pass on to heaven or hell. Many things effect the growth and development of soul power, such as environment, blood relations, physical and mental conditioning, past exposure to high levels of Soul Power and in some cases personality. In most cases of people unable to wield soul power, the problem stems from the failure to utilise either the Soul Spring or the Soul Spike.

ANATOMY OF THE SOUL
What we refer to as the soul itself, the essence or spirit of a person is actually the Soul Core. This is a person's very being, and is not observable in the living world to all but ethereal's. The soul itself is such a concentrated form of energy that its power is simply unfathomable, unlike soul power, it can only partially regenerate and if the soul core is damaged or drained, then that person would cease to exist. The soul core is what provides the fuel for the Soul Spring.

Soul Spring: The soul spring is a person's reservoir of Soul power. Essentially, it can be considered a person's soul stamina, a measurement of how long a person can maintain the use of Soul power.

Soul Spike: The soul spike is not a literal thing as such, it is more a term used when describing someone's power. The soul spike represents how high a person can "peak" their Soul power, meaning how high they can raise their power or how strong their attacks are. People with a high soul spike but low soul spring can cause much devastation, but only for a short amount of time. Conversely, while not being able to match a "Spiked" opponent, a combatant with a large soul spring will outlast them several times over.

Okay, read the two latest chapters

Oh, the reckless rescue mission isn't reckless afterall. Kai was pretty badass until he wasn't. which is a pity, but I guess Sand Tiger is no joke, or at least equal to Kai. Numbers and circumstance got to him too in the end I guess?

I was surprised Shio was bested like that as well, especially seeing what happened when he went beserk, I thought he'd be able to muster some huge water attack to save the day.

I could identify a little with how the caravan owners felt, it was strange that two Agents fell like that.

Question: Why was Kai sparing the bandits? A personal reason? It seemed strange how he did his best to let the bandits live and just vaporized the troll...

Anyways, good chapters!
Title: Re: Heavy Rayne Manga sidenotes, Character info, general discussion
Post by: Vacant on April 23, 2014, 05:21:33 PM
Yeah I had a hard time figuring this out. Without giving too much away,  Kai needed to go away during this part of the story and leave Shio to fend for himself. I thought him being wounded and Poisoned would suffice, so he selflessly threw himself in front of the attack as Shio had let his guard down for a moment, a true hero If I've ever seen one! :P

I like to try and make battles unpredictable (try and fail most of the time!) and have the circumstances play into it,  I tried to make it an instant reflex to just block the attack to save his student, even though they dont see eye to eye. This plays into Shio, since he is inexperienced in real combat he is vulnerable. The power up he had in his battle with Captain Gabroy was something that happened beyond his control and he has no idea how/what trigger's it.

Oh and in regards to him sparing them, There is a code the Agent's live by. One of the rules is that they cannot kill another person, unless they are deemed to be too dangerous to live, or can't be detained. Since the troll is a beast, the same rule doesn't apply to them (I don't condone Animal cruelty for the record :P)

but cheers dude for reading, you've motivated me to finish the new chapter tonight :)

Haha whatever works.

That troll comment though makes me think of an old story of mine from way back when haha, so quid pro quo I guess.

I was just surprised to be honest. I know Kai isn't bad, but I thought he was super cool and logical. Like: if i'm unconscious then everyone could die, so it's better to let 1 student die over the risk of other lives.

Here's my theory: He expects Sandtiger to spare everyone because he's got Agent training, and does not massacre people as he comes across them, so that's why he let his gaurd down a little?

1. Panel 4: *Keiji shakes his head, slightly irritated*
Keiji: "There was no one left to carry our haul, we were lucky that girl was there. All that matte"

- Not sure what happened here

2 - That reveal about how Shio really healed Kai cleared up some things for me, I'm glad i didn't point out my doubts at first, since it seemed too easy that Kai was healed. Nice that that was cleared up. I feel like he lied about having the antidotes, but if he really did prepare what other preparations did he make? Surely poison isn't the only thing that could go wrong on the journey...

3 - Haha Kai is in his home village now, interesting

4 - Question: What does the clothing look like? Is it mordern clothing? A mix?

5 - Just to reconfirm: Shio can't use any other elements for his magic right?

That was another fun read, sort of looking forward to the next. I want to know if he really does have the tactical advantage in this case or if this was too reckless. I wonder if Kai will be able to force his way into coming to help despite his injuries?

Keiji: "There was no one left to carry our haul, we were lucky that girl was there. All that matte"

- Not sure what happened here

Oops! A schoolboy error on the old Proof reading! fixed it, cheers for giving me a heads up dude.

Ah, in regards to your theory on Kai, I simply thought of him leaping to someone's defence without hesitation as a gut reflex. The Agents are indoctrinated into the Academy's principles of protecting innocent and defenceless people, In this universe they are too focused on preservation of life and are almost too lenient for their own good.

And yes, We shall see what else Shio may of prepared with him. Although I don't think I've put this in the story just yet, Possibly Shio's main strength is his incredible analytical abilities. He reads a situation and makes several strategies in a very short amount of time. It's almost how Lelouch in Code Geass alway's had a trick up his sleeve, often times so will Shio have a plan. Whether his tactics work or not....well, you never know.

I actually drew the Academy uniforms, I'm sure I still have those pictures somewhere :/ If I can find them I shall certainly upload them, but yes they wear modern clothing, I tend to always imagine characters in modern looking clothing so I just go with that a lot of the time.

And finally, yes at the moment Shio can only use one Lore of Magic which is the Lore of Water. However, there is something called Warrior Arts, which is separate to Magic that has no elemental base. These skills are a lot more varied, such as Assassin arts, warding arts for defence and suppression, Shogun Arts, Healing Arts, Illusion Arts and Pandora Arts to name but a few, since these aren't limited to an Element Shio can use these. Also, its worth me noting that Shio did have the ability to use most of the lores of magic, as do most other magic users.

I apologise, if that is just a wall of text I've thrown at you :P I keep meaning to add onto this side notes page a section about Magic and how it works to supplement the story. I'm thinking of adding a List of Magic and powers used to and when they debut, just like on the Bleach Wikia for Kido.

Operation? Was it serious? Hope it's all well

On the chapter itself

Is he just confident? Or he really has it figured out. I only find it dissapointing that he didn't continue using Zami for intel, it'd have made for the perfect getaway if she informed him on their movements. Other than that I have a feeling that he's being quite level headed through it all, and I like main characters who don't piss me off like that.

Sort of feel like Kai's village being visited so soon is a shame, like it should've been something to be visited earlier. But regardless, I find it interesting. Whatever rumour he was accused of though it doesn't look like it was wholly terrible, if the women are amicable enough with him to worry about his health. Even though the village elder is abrasive, to be honest I can understand not trying to mess with people like Mutoh and Keiji. Only to an extent though, because if he knew where the bandits were hidden out i'm sure some crowdsourcing would let them hire agents to deal with them at the very least.

I wonder how Shio sees the girl he wants to protect. Is it because he's fond of her or because of his sense of duty with the job he has?

Anyways, nice chapter. Looking forward to the bout. I like the samurai ninja clan aspect of it all. Was surprised at the ninja lineage of Shio, but whatever, I'm interested in such things.

Nah not really, in and out the same day, just need to heal an open wound which requires me to be off for a few weeks, Thanks dude, I appreciate the thoughts  :)

Yeah, he could of used her to get out unscathed, but then we wouldn't have a multi-chapter battle to enjoy! :P (Don't know about you, but I love and hate writing battle scenes, but I think this one turned out okay, we'll see)
And I totally agree, I hate the hot headed and/or clueless protagonist that so many shonen stories have, I prefer the Lelouch Lamprouge kind of style, Cool, calm and collected. Of course, Shio is not a dark character like Lelouch, he's very much a good guy.

Yeah, the reason I chose to visit his village was to give a bit more depth and understanding to Kai's character and why his relationship with Shio is how it is. Kai has come off a bit of a jackass so far, so we need to understand why to sympathize with him I think. Oh and the Village Head, holds Agent's in contempt and would refuse to hire them, due to Kai being one of them.

Shio has a psychological flaw, due to past events that causes him to obsess over the protection of others, particularly girls. It could almost be described as a mental defect, as it would override rational thinking. He is also a firm believer of what Academy stands for, which is the protection of other's. He's bought into their philosophy shall we say :P

Damn it! I thought things were going well! Congrats on reaching your 10th chapter, and it's good to see you going at a steady clip.

Now let me raeg over useless Shio.

Oh by the way when Shio was taunting Mutou you accidentally made Keiji reprimand Shio as Shio himself >.> forgot which panel...

Cheer's dude. I aim to post a chapter weekly, but with all this free time I have I've done three in four days! (And started work on another project but that's something very much in it's infancy so I'm saving it for later!) Seriously, with this latest chapter 12, we're about halfway through the first arc! although this first arc is a pretty short endeavour, not looking forward to writing out the 4th arc, it is going to be updwards of 100 chapters plus easily on its own.  But that's off topic, anyways :P

Ah, good spot man, I've rectified it now. My poor eye for proof reading strikes again!

And yeah, he can't win that easily, but Shio is always got a trick or two up his sleeve. (Not a shadow clone, he's not suddenly going to vanish and then pop out from a tree! :P)

"Thoughts on Chp 12 and 13"
Yes! Fist pump Yes! Oh man! You did so many things right. I could learn a thing or two from you. Especially with chapter 13, all the reveals and the dialogue was really interesting. But no chapter was greater than the other. Just good writing in general for both of these. Sure would read this manga. On the killing thing, you'd think to expect that sort of conversation from Naruto, but Kishimoto completely side-stepped that issue! It's totally a legitimate question for someone to ask. Even the great one piece side-steps mentioning what zoro or luffy are actually aiming for when cutting someone down. They don't explain their motivations for letting someone live, or rather if they even care about it. I don't want it to go gothic or dark or anything, but stop acting like you're wary about what the audience would think just because you have a realistic conversatoin.

*Takes a deep breath after rant

Kai explained his stance well. I think it'd be forced if he was still too abrasive over everything. Someone clearly went out staking their beliefs on their job and took down two experienced combatants. No matter what you think that's impressive. It's sad though, that I'm so cynical i don't find 'protecting the weak' to be that cool a phrase, but Shio holds the title pretty well. I like how he only collapsed when he delivered Amarissa to safety. I imagine he'd have been willing to try to fight a little more if the others didn't get taken out by his attack.

I thought it was being sidestepped, but it looks like his impossibru water magic proficiency has come up again. I thought it was the same old 'oh look he can do this spell!' thing from Mutou and Keiji, but Shio definitely did something suspicious by using that spell just like that.

The way mages and magic works is also pretty great. I have my theory that Shio is a mage and he somehow forgot everything, or he's definately related to one in the first place. Freaking Zami. Reveal your secrets already!

The governments of the countries is also truly interesting.

I think I have issues with some of the magic spell names. That last healing art seemed especially random, but no biggie there.

And even after all that juicy content, the chapter ends on that nice reveal. Tis was fun reading.

Keep writing

Why thank you dude, I'm glad you enjoyed the last chapter, I was cautious of it from turning into a chapter that was essentially an info drop, but I'm relieved it came off okay.

Ahh, Spell names! They are the often a sticking point for me. Every attack needs to sound cool to me, but I have trouble doing that. Happily the Lores of Magic are pretty short names for spells. The Warrior Arts are the ones that have trouble reigning in the words.

The Healing Arts spells was especially annoying in terms of a name as they all tend to be too "wordy"
But I don't like in Naruto for instance, where they have 500 different Fire Jutsu, then just one unnamed healing one :P I had the concept of naming all healing spells as prayers, hymns or Psalms, but they quickly all become a mouthful. Shall keep working on them!

And yeah, I totally get what you're saying.  When people in Shonen fight, they bust out swords, fireballs and earth shattering explosions......but they're only intending to knock out their opponent? I call shenanigans on that shizz :P

True that.

Ao no exorcist has an interesting take on healing spells and what not. The same idea of reading from scriptures, perhaps that could be of interest

Oh yeah, they read verses from religious scriptures for certain demons, I forgot about that.  I really liked that mechanic in the series.  Hmmm, damn I would steal that if I could :P Shall ponder about it and see.  Perhaps, it could be activated via meditation and a mantra of sorts?  Come to think of it I think that's included in blue exorcist too : P

Well everything is cannon fodder for stories, especially with famous religious texts like The Bible. It'd have to fit with your world though.

True dat! And yeah, well It probably would to be honest. I don't think it's come up just yet in my chapters but the religion the Academy follows is based off of Christianity, or it's creation story at least (Single Deity creates the world). So I reckon I could build upon it.

You do know you can go cheap on creating some of these backstory things right? Just google a few good verses here, some greek latin god names there. So long as it adds meat to the story go for it. Fine tuning can be done later haha.

I'd like to see those true mages though. sound interesting

Panel 3: *His head slumps down*
Shio: "I should've known she wouldn't stay put. She never listened to what I told her to do"

Shio: "I should of told the Professor she was there, I should done something..."

Panel 4: *A sad smile crosses his lips*
Shio: "Heh, they called me a genius, Yuki did too...."

Shio: "And yet I couldn't even predict the actions of a 15 year old girl"

Panel 5: *Shio then raises his head and looks at Amarissa*
Shio: "I blamed myself for her death. It made me think I couldn't help anyone"

             Shio: "But then...I saved you"

Yes. Exactly this, and I don't pity him at all. If he really was her friend in the first place, he'd know she would do something so risky, I mean she didn't care about any reprimands and followed him on the ship!

It's not the greatest tragic scene, but I think personally on her side it must've been terrifying, which is sad. 3rd years don't know any magic at all? If she died thinking Shio would save her then that'd be even worse.

Well, looks like I hate yet another main character haha. Shio went down several notches in my book.

Nice chapter. It wasn't a great wham or anything, but it's a necessary chapter in his life  I guess. As a side note I wonder what Agents are like in general. Flying around in airhships and having control of magic and technology... I wonder if they are mostly dutiful or if they get proud?

Is there any moral code for gaining personal riches as an Agent?
Title: Re: Heavy Rayne Manga sidenotes, Character info, general discussion
Post by: Vacant on May 19, 2014, 09:42:49 AM
Yeah, to be honest I've been looking at the chapter and was in half a mind to re-write it. I wasn't happy with how it turned out. The main thing is the Flashback wasn't meant to be anywhere near that long! I think it's 3/4's of the chapter, which I wasn't intending to do. But I trimmed pretty much all I could from it. There is a piece I deliberately didn't use just after he reaches her and her final words, but that is visited later on. Ah well.
It's funny you should say that, because one of the lines I omitted was Yuki saying he would rescue her if she was ever in any danger with a wink :P But I left it out because it felt too forced how I wrote it, as it was too close to her death.

And yeah, you should see the documents I have about the Academy, I think I know it's history and mechanics more than my own places of Education!!! To break it down simply, Agents enroll at Academy as Cadets. The Standard training is for 6 years. 99% of Agents are enrolled at the age of 12 so they graduate at 18. In the first 2 years, they mostly study the Academy philosophy, standard Academic subjects (Maths,English, History etc.)  as well as work on conditioning to get into shape. They then take an Exam, which upon passing they get to the 3rd year. Once in the third year they learn Combat, train with all kinds of weapons and learn the basics of Magic. After passing the 3rd year exam, they go on to the 4th year, where they focus heavily on combat and magic. This is again followed by the end of year exam. After passing the 4th year exam, the Agents then use their final two years to study specialized fields they choose as well as hone their magic ability.

Although they are taught to be noble, selfless and kind, they are above all else Human. There are some who are arrogant, stubborn and untrustworthy. Even the higher up's are not immune to this, which shall be explored later. The image I try to portray with the Academy is although it is supposed to be all innocent and good. There are some things that contradict their virtues and they are not perfect. One of the key points of this ties into what you said as well. Agent's can't take payments from other people, instead the person who requests a job pays the Academy. The Agent's are paid a wage by Academy. This leads some people to be sceptical of Agent's and to consider them simply as mercenaries.

You really have it all developed don't you? Nice! And  I notice you're watching SAO. *Looks disapproving haha

I'm not really feeling sympathy for Yuki so I doubt there's a different way to write that chapter.

I thought there'd be repsite for a muscle head in The Academy. Looks like you need smarts as well as brawn. And all of them get their magic activated? Interesting.

EDIT: Haha, it's not my idea, it's just the better way to do things. You've got to make reading your chapters as easy as possible for the reader.

Haha, well it help's me to create a story when I have a full understanding of how the world it is set in works.
While every Agent has their Soul Power awakened, not all use Magic. One of my favourite Characters doesn't use Magic at all, he simply condenses his Soul power into his hands and Feet and kicks ass!

And yeah,  It has helped to clean up my thread immensely. Hell, it helps me when I go and check on chapters, I have to search through. Since I do tend to change some bits from the drafts on my Computer to the scripts I upload so it helps me to find them too. I just need to find a way to organize the side notes and character profiles a bit better  :hmm: Perhaps I'll start a Wiki page :P

(I liked SAO, it gave me a warm feeling inside :P, although the second part with the fairies did drag a little)

                                                                                                    Lores of Magic

The following is a list of all the Spells that have been used in the Heavy Rayne series. They are catergorzied by Lore.

UNIVERSAL LORES
The 8 Universal Lores are the original Lores of Magic and the eight basic elements of Magic. All subsidiary Lores have one of these Branches of Magic as it's base. The 8 Universal Lores are what are taught at Academy, with the exception of the Lore of Metal. Celestial Magic is restricted to General Class Agents and Farseer's.

FIRE LORE: The lore of fire is the power to manipulate the Oxygen and flammable gases in the air and heat it using soul power, thus creating fire. It is easily one of the most prominent lores as not only are the spells effective in combat, but it also doesn't require any special needs since the raw materials are present everywhere in the atmosphere.
Spells
-Burning Barrage: The user fires several small fireballs that explode on impact.
-Fireball: Shoots a fireball from the casters hand.
-Flametongue: Sheathes the object the caster is holding in flames.
-Dragon Gale: The caster fires a large cone of fire from in front of their mouth.

WATER LORE: The lore of Water most commonly manipulates a nearby body of liquid for various effects. To a lesser extent, it can be used to form water from the Hydrogen and Oxygen in the air itself, but the water produced is rarely enough for due to the vast quantity needed for most Water spells. As such, it is one of the least common Lore's in pratice.
Spells
-Aqua Armour: The user creates a suit of water around their body which absorbs blows and defends against prevents sharp objects.
-Bubble Dome: Creates a large dome of water around the caster.
-Cannonball: The user creates a ball of water roughly the size of them then fires it from their hand with extreme force.
-Crashing Wave: Forms a medium sized wave with the sweep of an arm and sends it at the opponent at force.
-Hanging Mist: Casts a mist around the opponent, obscuring movement. It also clears any smoke or ash in the air.
-Poseidon: Two massive waves of water rise from behind the caster and rush forward, crashing into and washing away anything in its path.
-Pressure Cannon: Fires an extremely pressurised jet of water from the casters hand, capable of cutting through steel.

EARTH LORE: The lore of Earth is the power to freely manipulate Earth and Stone. It is the most physical of all the lores, using solid rock as a means of defence or assault. As the earth itself is in abundance and does not require converting, the spell caster uses less energy than one utilising Fire or Water. Its spells are on a large scale and can be used for incredible defences.
Spells
-Landslide: Sends a tide of mud and loose earth at a chosen target.
-Shockwave: Rocks the ground in the surrounding area.

WIND LORE: The lore of Wind is the power to manipulate the air itself through the use of soul power, to alter its speed and concentration. Like the Lore of Earth, since Air is literally everywhere and does not require converting, this lore uses less energy than fire and water lores. However, it does take a considerable amount of Soul power to control a large amount of wind and to spin it at high speeds. The two main types of attack is to either condense enough wind so that it can cut a target, or use the overwhelming force of high speed gales to pulverise the foe.
Spells
-Aerosphere: Creates a spherical barrier of wind moving at high speeds around the user.

LIGHTNING LORE: The Lore of lightning is the power over Electricity generated through the use of charged soul power. The user supercharges particles of soul power until they conduct static electricity, this is then amplified even further to the point that the user is wielding sizeable amounts of electricity. Another way to utilise this lore is to manipulate the atmosphere in such a way that it produces its own lightning, through which the caster holds dominion over with their soul power. This natural lightning is far more potent, but requires a far larger amount of soul power since the user must reach the very clouds with it.
Spells
-Lightning Spiral: Casts a coiling bolt of lightning from the casters hand, similar to a corkscrew that can bore through objects.
-Rolling Thunder: Several bolts of lightning thrash across the ground from the casters outstretched hands towards the target.
-Thundershot: fires a charge of electricity from the users hand.

METAL LORE: More commonly referred to as Alchemy, the lore of metal is the power to manipulate the shape, temperature, density and even the chemical base of any metallic substance in the vicinity of the caster.
Spells
-Rule Of Reconstruction: Allows the user to reshape any metal they come into contact with, allowing them to weaken or strengthen metallic objects at will.

SHADOW LORE: The Lore of Shadow's is the ability to give Shadows form via soul power and thus control these shadows through various spells. This Lore is useful for concealment or surprise attacks and is favoured commonly by the Hidden Op's of Academy.

CELESTIAL LORE: The Celestial Lore, sometimes referred to as the Lore of Heavens or Astral Lore, is the power to manipulate and draw in objects, Meteorites and matter beyond the earth itself, as well as the ability to mold cosmic radiation and manipulate Gravity. This is by far the most potent lore and is reserved to only the most skilled magicians, since a single spell from this lore has the potential to cause a global catastrophe.

SUBSIDIARY LORES
These are the Lores that are derived from the eight base Lores of Magic. The vast majority of these are also taught at Academy, but this is usually only the Agent shows a promise in a particular type of Magic, then they are taught it's Derivative Lores.

NATURE LORE: The Lore of Nature allows the user to manipulate organic life with Soul power, such as tree's, plants and Fungi. It is derived from the Lore of Earth. Although an Lore geared towards agriculture, it has it's uses in battle, such as accelerating the growth of plants and tree's for concealment, or turning the heavy branches of a tree into deadly weapons.

ICE LORE: The Lore of Ice is a subsidiary Lore, derived from the Lore of Water. It involves freezing and manipulating water molecules as a means of attack or defence. Similar to the Lore of Water, it depends on a pre-existing body of liquid to be present, since only minimal Ice could be made from the immediate atmosphere.

SOUND LORE: The Lore of Sound is a Subsidiary Lore, derived from the Lore of Wind. Instead of spinning or pushing the air around them, the user vibrates it instead, causing shockwaves. The user can use these shockwaves for attacks, but can also produce sounds to deafen foes or disrupt their balance.

LOTUS LORE: The Lore of Lotus is a rare magic, with the sole practitioners of this Lore being the Kuya Clan. It is not taught by Academy and is not recognised by the High Mage Court as one of the Universal Lores. It involves the use of specially cultivated seedlings, imbued with magic during their growth to reproduce a certain effect when a spell is invoked. Some believe it was derived from the Lore of Nature although this is merely speculation.

FORBIDDEN LORES
Forbidden Lores are one's that have been banned and any documents relating to the teaching of such Magic have been seized by the High Mage Court. As such, not too much is known about these lores. The two main types of spell's that are said to be forbidden are those that are considered evil, or those that violate the laws of Nature and physics. Whether such Lores truly exist is unknown.

BLOOD LORE: A forbidden Lore, it is a crime to use or learn such Magic. It is also referred to as Ritual Magic, as some believe that the user sacrifices a set amount of blood in exchange for a demon's ability. Although, most in the modern era believe this to be false, it is still a very dangerous Lore, with many who used it in the past having succumbed to madness, leading it to be banned.

I am going to learn all the lores and become OP.

Nature Lore has potential to be quite terrifying. What if you just directly manipulate a human's organic material? Fufufufu....

What's the general scale of Poseidon? Could you reveal how many have learnt it?

Go for it dude, become a master and rule the world!

Hmm, I was playing with the idea of the Lore of Nature being able to control a person's organic tissue, but in the end I decided against it, since there is a Villain who possesses a similar kind of ability coming up in the distant future.

I thought I'd start sorting the Lores of Magic and will add the spell's as and when they appear in the chapters.
There are several more Lore's to add, but I'm debating whether to wait till they debut as well :P

The spells are all sorted in levels from 1-5. 5 being non-lethal, auxiliary spells, while a Level 1 spell is capable of incredible devastation. Posiedon is a level two spell. Level two spells are normally restricted to those who are at least a Major and are normally rare amongst even them. Water Lore spells are rare amongst any magic wielders as they usually depend on having a body of water near them.

                                                                                Technology in Heavy Rayne

The general level of technology that exists in the Heavy Rayne Universe is far more advanced than modern machinery and science. However, the spread of such advanced tech is not even throughout the nations. The two most Scientifically advanced Nations are Aristas and Celdia. Aristas sells its tech to any and all buyers and are the number one manufacturers of everything from household appliances to weaponry. Celdia on the other hand mostly keep their technology to themselves and are responsible for many inventions such as Airships, Plasma Generators and Bionics to name but a few. They do however share Technology with Nomia, as part as a pact between the two. Nearly every town and city has access to modern electricity and running water.

GENERAL TECHNOLOGY:

-Shuttlerail: The Shuttlerails revolutionised travel for those on the Mainland when they were introduced 120 years ago. The Shuttlerails are high speed trains that connect each city to one another and are so efficent, they have become far more popular than the use of Motor cars to travel. Major cities also have Shuttlerails that run internally within the city as well.

-Airships: Modern Airships were an Invention that came from Celdia, after they perfected the Plasma Engine. Although older versions of Airships existed, they relied on incredible amounts of fossil fuel for flight and were slow. With the far more efficient Plasma Engines, these new Airships were safer, faster and easier to control. Celdia gifted several Airships to Academy while Bellesim paid for a fleet of their own. Aristas eventually managed to obtain limited knowledge of the Plasma Engine during the last great war and this led to them creating their own ships. The design's vary from ship to ship, some are defined as non-combative cruisers, to some being floating weapon batteries.

Plasma Energy: Roughly 80 years ago, Celdia discovered a way to harness Plasma and extract it's energy while using little to no Fossil fuels, it is a closely guarded secret and not much is known about the process. However, Celdia has shared it's technology under the improvisation that they run and maintain the Plasma Power Plants in the cities of the Nations who have paid for this tech. Plasma technology is far more efficient than previous means of energy and has made fossil fuels mostly redundant.

ACADEMY TECHNOLOGY: The following technology is either used exclusively by the Academy or was innovated by their Science and Technology department.

-Insig: The Insig. is a portable device similar to a mobile smart phone. However, instead it is a transparent piece of glass with a metal rim. When switched on, text and images appear on the screen. It can also project 3D holographic images as well. It also serves as an Agent's ID, since it is carries their information. They are very useful in that they can be used for communication, Recording images, generating Maps, pulling up information and numerous other tasks. When linked to a larger Communication array, it also allows the Agent to have long distance "Holocalls" which are Video calls via projected holograms.

-Synthetic Antidotes and Vaccines: Academy is the world leader in medical technology and cures for ailments and diseases. This combined with their use of Healing Arts, leads to the incredible vitality of the Nomian people. By studying diseases, viruses and other illnesses, Academy scientists were able to artificially grow antibodies to cure various ailments. This extends to Anti-venoms as well, making small portable cures that Agents can carry with them during missions. It is worth noting that although created in Academy, once a cure is found for any major disease, Academy will notify all Nations and freely distributes this to the rest of the world.

Skimmed through a lot but only spotted this. Can't say for sure if there are other errors

Panel 1: *Kai nods*
Kai: "He is unusual, this is all of the record of course Captain Urien"
* Off

Anyways, that was an interesting three chapters, really appreciated the glance at the other participants, and more on Kai's past. I was surprised at his direct interrogation of Shio on his abilities, and I'm wondering if he really conjures water from the atmosphere. Wouldn't the air feel amazingly dry then? It seems so expertly done so as not to affect the surroundings, youd' think  such a spell would steal even moisture from human bodies... But that's just me being grim again.

I wish I noted down my thoughts as I read through, but in any case I enjoyed what I saw. There are some pretty interesting sights.

The mention of planets, and the presence of a camera were a bit jarring for me, but now I'm accepting that this is a sort of science fantasy.

I have a suspicion that Ferals are part of The Big Plot. Doesn't seem like a normal sort of problem to have in any case. I wonder if it's crazily connected to Shio's situation?

It feels like Chapter 17 is the start of a new arc. I wish there was a bit more of a wind-down time from Chapter 16, but I guess it's logical since they are on their adventure, in any case the first 15 chapters have been a really fun and enjoyable read.

Like the ideas that I keep on stumbling on here, and looking forward to more action even though you don't necessarily enjoy writing it.

/end rant

Oh when I feel like I get the Action right, it's a pleasure to write. It's when it doesn't quite click that my shoulders slump :P But in terms of the Arc, we are just coming to the end of the first one. Probably about chapter 21-22 I see this Arc coming to an end.
                 Cheers for reading dude! :)

                                                                                                        Warrior Art's

Although called different names, the practice of these Warrior Arts is basically the same. Simply put, Warrior arts are spells that do not use the lores of magic and are generated entirely through soul power. While magic requires natural resources as well of intimate knowledge of each lore, these spell's do not. This makes them far more varied than magic and more commonplace for warriors without access to the universal lores teachings.

WARRIOR ART'S: This group of spell's are those that are not categorized in any particular group and are generic offensive spell's
Spell's
-White Arrow: The user fires an arrow of white Soul power from their index and middle fingertips.

WARDING ART'S: This group of spells consists of both defensive spells and those that Constrain Targets as well. As such, the spells are diverse and some form of Warding Art's are well known throughout the world
Spell's
-Coiling Invitation: Casts a thread of yellow light that wraps around an object or limb of a target anchoring the caster to them.
-Snapping Wall:Casts to red rectangles of light that fold into each other to make two halves of a wall.
-Shock Break: Sends streams of light at the opponent which then slam them down to the ground and holds them
-Trapping eye: The user shoots a web of red energy at an enemy from their eyes, binding the foe.

ILLUSION ART'S: These spell's are those that produce an effect to confuse an opponent or to create an illusion and trick the sense's. This can be achieved by any sensory trigger, such as a hand movement, or a certain noise.
Spell's
-Premature Coffin: A visual and touch illusion, causes the target to feel as if the ground has swallowed them up, blocking their vision and restricting their movement for a short time.

And with the completion of Chapter 22, the first Arc is officially finished!!!! :doublethumbs:

With this, I'll be taking a couple of weeks break on this Story to work on some other things, plus the second Arc needs revisiting in terms of pacing so I'll be doing a little tinkering, before I'm happy to release a chapter.

Thanks for reading this far anyway, look forward to the second Arc soon! :)

Comments and feedback always welcome!

I read it all!

I must say that this was very interesting to read. Gonna have to say Kai is my favorite going into the next arc and Shio's a close second. Really liking the Eliza/Shio dynamic you got going on and I know that Natashia and the Queen will no doubt be a threat to fear.

Just a few spelling errors:
PAGE SIXTEEN CH.22

Panel 1: *We now see inside a cosy looking home. Shio and Artine are sitting inside the living room on plush chairs opposite one another. A fire crackles away in the fireplace*
-cozy

PAGE SIXTEEN CH.21
Panel 5: *He lets go of the rail with one hand and lift's this free hand up*
-his

PAGE TWENTY CH.20

Panel 1: *He stares into her newly awakened eyes*
Shio: "Eliza, what are you going here?"
-doing

Are all of your arc's going to be this long or are you going to have those monster Bleach-type arcs?

I will definitely read when you post up following chapters.

P.S.With the Celestial Lore, all I think of is Pain from Naruto and instantly assosciate it with cool characters, though Warrior Arts sound pretty cool as well. I question why Celestial Lore isn't forbidden since you can pretty much destroy who you want, when you want.

Cheers dude, appreciate it

Yeah, Kai is good to write, especially his Battles, he has some epic fights coming up! (I think so anyway) :P

To answer your question in depth, the 2nd arc (The Seven Swords Arc) and 3rd Arc (The Two Princesses Arc) will be around this length, about 20-30 chapters in length. However, the 4th arc (The World Peace Festival Arc) is a lot longer, I don't know for certain, but it's going to probably easily exceed 100 chapters. the 5th arc (The Sand and Snow Arc) is about 40-50 I think, where as the 6th Arc (The Aristas Arc) again will be a large one, clocking over 100 chapters roughly. The next six are not set in stone yet, so I can't say, but they will usually be hovering around 50-60 chapters from what  I have for them.

Oh yeah, The Celestial Lore is restricted to only the highest level Mages, although a few auxiliary spells are available to low level Wizards. It's teaching is strictly monitored and knowledge of the Lore is limited. It hasn't debuted in the series yet so it hasn't really been elaborated on. The lores do get explored further in the future.

The Seven Swords Arc sounds entertaining and I like how you have the entire series essentially done, it's always good to be a step ahead.

The ideas you have for lore are interesting, I can tell that you are calculating everything. Do you plan to have a timeskip at some point?

I can't wait to read more!
Title: Re: Heavy Rayne Manga sidenotes, Character info, general discussion
Post by: Vacant on July 15, 2014, 09:19:14 PM
Haha, there is indeed a time skip :P There's a 1 year jump between the 6th and 7th Arcs. There's a strong possibility there will be a further Time skip later on, but I'm not 100% on if I'm happy with it yet. Yeah, well I actually started this story about 2-3 years ago, so I've been steadily plotting it out for a couple of years now. Still even when scripting it now, I add more stuff in than before (The Troll battle in the woods was just something I stuck in, plus I got swept up in the Airship Raid Battle and added more scenes on the fly, but that was a really fun battle to write)

Yeah, I guess having a short attention, I'm prone to daydreaming, I get most of my ideas then and just flesh them out. Any mechanic I put into a story, I always make a document about it and figure out how it works, it's history, it's potential uses etc. You don't want to see the folders I've got for this story. I've got crests, maps, the History of the Nations, Religions in the World, a Bestiary and a lot of other things that I'll never use :P

I love timeskips. It's just something about seeing all those characters older. 2-3 years? That's about how long I've been working on my story though I don't have all that stuff you've got. :P

I must say that this story is very intresting and I'll stick around to see how things unfold for Shio. It has a strong first arc and I look forward to the Seven Swords Arc.

That sounds quite amazing. I have big projects, but I've never stockpiled that amount of information for them for a very long time. Well it shows that you don't suffer when picking out what to use here and there, and I'm glad that wer're not overwhelmed by all this juicy information.

Spoiler

Wrote this off the top of my head and just used numbers to help a little...

Read the latest four chapters. Forgive me, I forget which chapter it is but I saw this error

Quote
PAGE FIFTEEN

Panel 1: *Shio tries kicking her in the ribs, but the girl nips up*

***Ahem... 'nips' up eh... *trollface* I wonder what was going through your mind then.

1. To be honest the whole air ship battle thing seemed almost unnecessary. At first that is. I see it's leading on to something quite important to the story, but that was only after I finished reading.

2. I felt like the raiders were being too lenient though, but if they were being brainwashed that's understandeable I guess. Otherwise you'd expect a grappling hook to actually spear someone and cause damage rather than just harmlessly wrap around their limb. Or the whip user to make the whip painful in someway, and the scimatar woman to take action at the instant Kai reeled in the whip girl. Many other occurences happened like that. In many other cases though I can see it's a case of how freaking overpowered Agents are haha. The amount of magic they can use is astounding. Just the Warrior arts alone are dangerous. I thought Shio's was dangerous but the Onyx wave looked even more damaging. That's why I accept that they are able to wiggle out of this situation. They have quite the arsenal to their abilities.

3. Yuki's death is really unfair, she should've hung around more. If you killed her just for the sake of making readers sad then I'll delete you as a friend on facebook (this is a big threat.)

4. Using wind lore to stop from falling off the ship was brilliant, but I'm worried about the security for when it was arriving at port. What if the ship was rigged with explosives? What if it had some sort of contagion on board, or the bandits who had stowed away on it were more dangerous than normal? I feel like 1. They should've been more wary. If they were willing to let it land then let it land in some sort of confined section of the port. 2. The people on board the ship, since the radio system was damaged, simply use mirrors, lamps or even their magic to signal that everything is okay and their ship ran into some trouble on their way back.

b) Like how Kai tried to save that poor cannon fodder agent from doom, but the guy was unfortunate. Kai is cool. The others aren't I guess.

c) It was funny how everyone copied Kai's wind lore, and interesting that Shio needed help from that female Agent

5. The events took one week I see. Shio's had quite an adventure. It's impressive that he took out assasins though, and he killed, but I see that considering everything he's been through he accepted that he had to just live with that. To be honest if he suddenly froze up and let himself get kicked around, I'd support him getting offed by one of the brutes or raiders. It'd be so foolish, especially seeing as how undecisivness led to poor Yuki's demise.

6. In any case it looks like the end of an arc. I missed Z (er, I still can't remember her name at a glance.) She seems really mysterious, but doesn't go jumping in front of the camera trying to show off how mysterious she is. It's nice.

7. So you have tonnes of arcs planned? With timeskips as well? Interesting!

Good writing, I hope you manage to get this into a manga somehow. It was fun to get to read the chapters all at once like that.

Ah no, to "nip up" is actually a term :P It's when someone's on there back then they spring up onto their feet. Here, this explains it better, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nip-up (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nip-up)

Thank you thank you dude. All this renewed interest! :P Well you'll be happy to know guys that I have indeed started work on Chapter 23. I've been delayed in my writing due to the reviews I've been doing, but I'm getting ready to throw in the towel with them I think :(

Anyways, the second arc will be fun to write, since there will be a larger group of Agents together, plus someone gets to fight who I love writing the battles for (Spoiler, there will be a battle in this shonen story arc!!!! :O )

Maybe I'll have to focus on drawing, maybe one day I could do my own art. But considering I visualise something comparable to Bleach's Art I don't see that happening :P

Haha, a battle in a shounen story, what a surprise there. I wasn't expecting you to visualize a bleach art style though. I thought it'd have something more modern-generic (New manga these days tend to have the same art. You rarely see something that looks definitely unique)

Well something between the level of Bleach and Fairy tail :P That's the kind of Style I have in mind. So something more detailed than FMA and Naruto I guess.

It's a moot point right now anyway, since It's solely based on my own skill level which is below any of those. However, I did wanna draw an Illustration per chapter, just to get my practice in, but I never had the time/patience.

You plan on learning to draw yourself no matter what? If you were able to get a reasonable deal with an artist would you be against that? Just asking.

Also did you somewhere explain what exactly are the Warrior arts? They seem like energy based attacks and quite quite powerful.
Title: Re: Heavy Rayne Manga sidenotes, Character info, general discussion
Post by: Vacant on July 20, 2014, 06:56:17 PM
I wouldn't be opposed to hiring an artist or partnering with one. I accept that I probably won't get to the level I wish (I constantly neglect to practice Drawing) in terms of art. So yeah, I guess the ideal solution for me would be to find/hire an Artist to do the Drawings for me :P

I don't believe I have yet. They're explained more in detail in this upcoming arc. The main difference is Magic is the use of Soul power combined with the knowledge to manipulate chemical elements in the area for the desired effect. Whereas Warrior Arts are purely soul power based attacks. They don't have an elemental base so are very versatile and are more common in the world.

Wait, soul power is different? Is that also only unlocked by true mages or can someone train their soul power themselves?
Title: Re: Heavy Rayne Manga sidenotes, Character info, general discussion
Post by: Vacant on July 20, 2014, 07:08:52 PM
Oh no, soul power is what's unlocked by Mages. It's the energy that flows from the "Soul". It forms the basis of magic, Warrior Arts and every other superhuman ability Humans possess in the Heavy Rayne World.

Man you know you've just gotta add that one badass normal who surpasses his limits on his own and opens his own soul power. Have his fists pierce the heavens!

On the output of the characters, does age matter? Or does everyone have their own limit of soul power? I'm imagineining how chakra works in Naruto, but Shiyo and Kai are producing quite a bit of magic. I know they're special, but what about for the other cannonfodder agents?
Title: Re: Heavy Rayne Manga sidenotes, Character info, general discussion

It's sorta like Chakra yeah. I wrote in depth on it before, you can find the post here: http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,10308.msg173102.html#msg173102 (http://forums.mangaraiders.com/index.php/topic,10308.msg173102.html#msg173102)

In regards to limits. Each person has different levels of Soul power. It can be increased through physical and Mental conditioning, strong will power and learning more magic.

Kai and Shio are both Prodigies in terms of strength, with both being far above Average. Shio does have an advantage in this regard, but that will be revealed later.  ;)

Amber seems mighty excited.

The second arc has gotten rolling I see. Shio's got some undeniable street cred while the number one student is nervous. I wonder if he's actually powerful. For a moment there I thought he was the one that was assassinated, which would've sort of been a shame.

Shio overwhelming his training room was taken well by the teacher. I guess they already know his abilities? His friendliness with the high ranking officers is interesting.

And Leaz and Amber seem like cool friends. I have a feeling Leaz is weak though.

Where did you get the name Nagoth from? I happened to have used that way back at random haha, was an interesting coincidence.

Looks like politics is really established around this world. Some interesting names and locations have been thrown around, so as always it's cool how much background information you managed to develop.

I wonder if the assassins are truly powerful enough to tango with an Agent, and how useful that is.

I expect Shio to use Zamizuchi to aid in sensing soul power. That could've proved useful at  capturing the criminals at least. Was she with him the whole day? If not then she has a really large sensing range.

I like writing the excitable characters, they can give more exaggerated responses :P

It has indeed dude, although at a slower pace than the last one, will hopefully be back to weekly chapters soon. Nah, got plans for Lu Fang, he's one of the more prominent classmates of Shio and co.

Yeah, I think since it's a school like environment they've been raised to have more of a student/teacher relationship, as opposed to a soldier/commander type deal. Not with the highest ranking Agents mind.

Leaz is that kind of guy that is laid back and tries way too hard to be cool. However, he is ultra competitive and believes he is stronger than Shio. I'd say Shio, Leaz, Amber and Ruby are all comparable in terms of strength, although their attributes vary wildly.

haha, really? Thats pretty cool. Do you ever think of a name then immediately google it, to see what pops up? :P I think it was something I took from when we were kids and used to play Lord of the Rings. I think it was a name we used for a bad guy?

Pretty much, I've said it before, I'm obsessed with fleshing out backgrounds haha.

Ah now you're a clever one Lego. Indeed, she has many advantages over normal humans. Advantages that Shio could potentially tap into. Yeah she was there with him. Usually, she can reside in her soul state, which is inside of him. If she wants she can manifest as an apparition that he can see, or she can use water to form a body of sorts if she wishes. But that'll be covered in time :P

Everytime i read this story...or at least the first half of the first chapter it is heavily confusing just by the way you introduce things. I'm not sure what you are aiming for, but teasing information is good only when it gives a direction of what the world is supposed to look like.

When you reveal this piece of information:

For the last 1000 years, the lores of Magic and the mastery of technology have co-existed. What one could not overcome, the other could easily achieve. One could easily believe this would lead to a utopian society, where the world was free of suffering and greed. But their relationship is not Harmonious. For the possession of each art is divided among the Nations of our world. Magic and the use of Soul Power falls under the jurisdiction of the Mages and Seers that walk this earth. Where as advanced technology is synonymous with the industrial nations. This rift and unease has lead to many wars in the past few centuries and it is but a slither of peace we have clung to this past decade.

^^What am i suppose to imagine here? There's so much information being thrown out but not properly establish.

That is where we come in. We who serve only to protect people, regardless of Nationality. Our actions are guided by Morality and not political or financial gain. We who gather here at Academy, have long strived to be the Peacekeepers of our world"

There's a lot of information here, and all there is to imagine this information is a blank page. These first two scenes tell me a lot on your writing process, you do a lot of "telling" not "showing" and what is generally allowed to be told isn't being told naturally. Would you review your chapters and see if you can point out areas where the issue is repeated?
Title: Re: Heavy Rayne Manga sidenotes, Character info, general discussion
Post by: Vacant on December 02, 2014, 08:18:58 AM
hey there,
Erm, yeah a lot of info there. A nice little bit of text. Just kinda sets the world up, so people know Magic and technology co-exist. That there is turmoil in the world and that sets up who the agents are. So a short paragraph to give that info. I know you mentioned it in the past too, I didn't realise it was so confusing for people, since no one else has mentioned that I dont think and it reads pretty easily to me. Huh, well I'll keep that in mind then.

I'm not sure what you're asking in the last bit though sorry. "Would you review your chapters and see if you can point out areas where the issue is repeated?" What issue you want me to look out for to see if its repeated? Where I tell rather than show?

Giving a setup is also giving a solid image. Now setting up the world and leaving it vague makes this wprld limitless and thats not a good thing. It needs structure.

For example: a world where technology and magic coexist....how? First of all: what are the major distinctions between the two in this world to make them work together?

Magic and technology coexisting is no different than saying magic exists in our world since technology is everywhere.
Title: Re: Heavy Rayne Manga sidenotes, Character info, general discussion
Post by: Vacant on December 02, 2014, 10:34:28 PM
You want me to reveal how magic and technology came to be, how the possession of each became split and led to wars over centuries of history, in detail.....on the first page?

By the power of greyskull that would be difficult, maybe I could include a fold out page to give me more room perhaps?  :hmm:

But in all serious, I don't think that would be a good idea.  People have a concept of what technology is, as do they for magic too.  That's all that's needed before they are shown the two disciplines if you will. I believe what you're suggesting would take up an entire chapter, which would derail the actual story being introduced in the first place. Not everything needs to be spoon fed in the first five pages, at least that's what I believe.

It really doesn't...i understand there might be a lot to reveal about the world and it will be revealed in due time. But at this moment, you're not even giving us the basics.

For one, in this world, you did not establish technology and you did not establish magic, but you reveal that Magic and Technology coexist.

For example: most people can understand what alchemy is just by researching it. Yet Fullmetal Alchemist takes its time to establish what Alchemy is in the first chapter.

I'm sorry Loren, but I'm having a hard time processing this....are you saying that people don't know what Magic and Technology are? Granted Magic is fictional, but really anyone will have an idea for what this is upon hearing the word (and they don't have to wonder any further, once spells are shown in the first chapter either)

Let me give some examples of things being introduced early on, but not explained in great detail until later:
-Fairy Tail: In the first chapter, we are told Lucy is a mage, she wants to join a guild. However, the origins of Magic are never explained, or why there are mages. We are just told they are.

-Bleach: In the first Chapter, Rukia uses a Kido spell, she tells Ichigo its a spell only Shinigami can use. But the origins of it are never explained, nor really are the origins of the Shinigami. We are told what they do and where they live.

-Code Geass: Lelouch receives his Geass, in the first episode. We are never told where C.C. came from, where she obtained this power, or really what it is, other than the Power of the kings.

-Final Fantasy VII: When first introduced to Materia, it's not really explained what it is until the flashback scene with Cloud.

-Haruhi: In the first episode, we are not told or learn that Haruhi has any kind of special powers.

Here's some non-Anime/Manga examples too:
-Lord of the Rings: In the first book, the history of the ring is only given very briefly. It is not revealed what happened in Mount Doom, nor about the Nazgul or about how Sauron created it.

-Walking Dead: Rick wakes up to a zombie apocalypse. It is never stated what caused it, or what's happening, but the audience is trusted to connect the dots.

I'm going to stop there with them, but you get my point.

I'm also going to nip this in bud, since I think we've done this enough to know how it goes. We'll end up disagreeing and spending time trying to prove the other person wrong. It won't get either of us anywhere in the end. So I shall say thank you for your feedback Loren, appreciate you giving my story a look and will leave it at that  :D

Its not about teaching them, but establishing it well in the story.

For example: i know what magic is in the general aspects, but i dont even have an idea of what magic is like in your story.

and obviously technology can be anything. it literally can be caveman inventing the wheel. in fact, a lot of "magic" stories have "technology" in them and coexist. Mentioning it in your story doesn't really give me a clear image. it looks really wishy washy. So giving us an image what technology you're referring in your story but also giving us an idea of what magic is helps us.

Also, the "coexist" part. are they just an inconsistent mix? or i their some form of balance? you can't just drop a bomb like that and expect us to have a good idea of what you wanted us to see.

Let me give some examples of things being introduced early on, but not explained in great detail until later:
-Fairy Tail: In the first chapter, we are told Lucy is a mage, she wants to join a guild. However, the origins of Magic are never explained, or why there are mages. We are just told they are.
Fairy Tail's first chapter doesn't have a misleading introduction. the entire world of fairy tail is being explained.
Quote
-Bleach: In the first Chapter, Rukia uses a Kido spell, she tells Ichigo its a spell only Shinigami can use. But the origins of it are never explained, nor really are the origins of the Shinigami. We are told what they do and where they live.
Shinigami were told in a way that keep the balance of the world so their origins are more inlined with the origins of everything. without shinigami the world can fall out of balance. Its kind of like saying where the origins of "angels" although it is enough to say God created them. But even if they didn't, their purpose is instrumental to the world. But its not about the origins, but explaining what it actually is. Rukia gave a pretty simple yet thorough explanation of what shinigami, hollow, and soul society is.

I'm asking you to give more foundation to what you're randomly revealing. Its giving some positioning and adding some depth. in FMA they could've randomly revealed what alchemy was....but again, they put weight on it because it makes what the world goes round. heck the origins aren't even explained until the end.

Quote
-Code Geass: Lelouch receives his Geass, in the first episode. We are never told where C.C. came from, where she obtained this power, or really what it is, other than the Power of the kings.
Actually that's where you're wrong. We do know where she came from, where she obtained her power, and what it is.

Quote
-Final Fantasy VII: When first introduced to Materia, it's not really explained what it is until the flashback scene with Cloud.
FF7's cinematic story telling was more of beginning in the middle of the action and then explaining more of it as it goes on. The story was still given enough information throughout the game. In fact there were things that the people didn't know. Materia is instrumental in the game, so when it was explained, it was explained at pinnacle moment in the game.

If you want FF7 style, just don't give an introduction of the world where "technology and magic coexist". not even FF7 explains it the way you are. in this world magic is the technology.

Quote
-Haruhi: In the first episode, we are not told or learn that Haruhi has any kind of special powers.
now other than the episodes being mixed up, even with the legitimate 1st episode, it can be seen without knowing about her powers. but even so the story telling isn't based on knowing what the powers are...

Quote
Here's some non-Anime/Manga examples too:
-Lord of the Rings: In the first book, the history of the ring is only given very briefly. It is not revealed what happened in Mount Doom, nor about the Nazgul or about how Sauron created it.
it gave more than enough information about the world. the origins of the ring wasn't exactly was necessary.

Thoughts on chapter 26

Fairchild is officially my favourite general ever.

It's been a while but I'm glad that some facts still fit in my head, getting back on track was easy haha. I like how Shio can relate with the other new characters even though they're not his graduating clique. As for the intruige around the murder I don't feel how important the murder was for some reason, nor did I feel anyone was being framed or blamed for it. But this might just be because I haven't read much.

The page where they pull into the train terminal made me think the panels may be an issue when you actually get around to making the manga. Wouldn't a large view like that actually turn out to be a large panel on the page? In fact, some action scenes may need to have larger panels to make them that much more epic so watch out for that when you can.

I'll get to the other chapters asap.

Review for Chapter 27 &  28
HEAVY RAYNE CHAPTER 27: Scavenger Hunt

1.
Panel 4: *Shio slumps against a tree*
Shio: "I take it this berry is rare then?"
- I can’t help but think of Pokemon berry hunting .

2.
Panel 5: *Agent Daniels answers*
Daniels: "No. We don't think it's a case of becoming extinct"

Daniels: "We see evidence that the Berries have grown, but they're gone"
- So whatever is plaguing wild life and nature is really on a rampage. I wonder what is happening.

3.
Panel 5: *We see the Group look in shock*
Kai: "Was the very same man who was murdered"
- Well that’s a bummer.

I haven’t read in a while and am a bit lost as to why they’re berry hunting instead of investigating said murder, but it was an ok chapter. Funny thing is my favourite bits were Leaz getting his hand irritated and Shio jumping down from a tree non-chalantly.

HEAVY RAYNE CHAPTER 28: If You Go Down to the Woods Today

1.
Shio: "But to feel guilt, you must think that its connected then?"
* it’s

2.

Panel 1: *shio replies to them, a bit touchily*
Shio: "Taking out an enemies supplies is a standard tactic"
* Shio
*Taking out an enemies’

3.
Panel 3: *We see in front of him, Zamizuchi is floating around, staring off into the distance intently*

- Zamizuchi! It’s nice to see her.

4.
Panel 3: *We see the Figure is now formed. It resembles a large bear like creature standing on its hind legs. It has large tusks as well as a horn on its head. It's head and forearms are bare, but the rest of its body is covered in thick black fur with a mane of white fur around its neck*
             Daniels: ".....Is that!?"

- Cliffhanger if there was one

In general it seems you proof your chapters pretty good dude, I think as always I’ll just focus on getting through the story and commenting my reactions to certain scenes. So props on dealing with that. As always it’d be really good to see this illustrated. I am still imagining the Owari no Seraph art style for this.

I’ll read the rest later. How goes the writing on this one ?

thank you my brother! Erm....yeah a bit of a change of pace the whole forest walk scene is (despite the fact that the first half of the first Arc took place in woodland :( Which bugs me so i tried to make the two locations feel different.)

The writings going...erm...well. I'll be honest. I have this arc all written up and has been for a long while. I just need to convert it to script form. However, I still need to finish Chapter 1 of Nephilim for the Anthology, but instead Im procrastinating :( So really, as soon as thats out the door, I can get back to this :D

Great.

Hehe, as for the anthology Frono swearzy and I have something for that too. The formatting of the actual pages still hasn't been decided yet though...

Review for Chapter 29 & 30
HEAVY RAYNE CHAPTER 29: Smoke and Fire

1.
Panel 5: *The Agent shakes his head*
Daniels: "Don't worry about me General, I'll be okay"

- Might be poisonous or something though

2.
Panel 1: *As kai looks around, the group hears several calls and roars beyond the trees*
             Creature: "Roarrrrr!"

             Creature: "Graarrrhhhh!!"
*Kai

3. Panel 6: *At his touch, the sphere cracks and shatters, revealing the pair inside*

- I thought Fairchild would have some combat abilities too

4.
Panel 6: *Daniels speaks up*
Daniels: "General Fairchild is a non-combatant. Her strengths don't lie on the battlefield"
- Oh, guess that was answered for me

5.
Panel 5: *He turns to the noise empty handed*
Shio: "I must of lost my Sword up there!"
- have

6.
Panel 3: *He stands facing off against the beast empty handed*
             Shio: "Lately...It never is"
- No kidding

Well pretty short and action packed chapter there. Not much to mention other than that, but Shio sure suddenly got himself in a bind there! Use more water magic!

 HEAVY RAYNE CHAPTER 30: Scattered
1. Panel 2: *Shio looks suprised*
*surprised

2.

Panel 1: *The beast throws itself forward towards him, it's horn and tusks pointed ahead*

*its

3.
Panel 5: *Shio looks confused at this*
Shio: "It can change it's form?"
*its

4.
Panel 6: *Shio rubs his neck, while looking irate*
Shio: "It was just something he bought up one time!"
*brought
5.
Shio: "How am I supposed to remember every little thing anyone tells me?"
  - Haha, this dialogue is pretty amusing
- I’m surprised he hasn’t talked about Zamizuchi to his closest friends though... And where was she when that girl got killed that one time

6.
Panel 2: *Shio shakes his head*
Shio: "You've got to be kidding me!"

-Seriously. Where did they all suddenly pop up from ? Youd think the team would be aware of them, or Zami would sense them arriving. Something fishy about this sudden Revenant attack...

7.
Panel 4: *This person comes into view and is revealed to be Leaz, wearing a smile on his face*
Leaz: "Look at us, having to save your skin. Just like the good old days"

- Wow, so Leaz isn’t useless huh. Nice dramatic entrance there

8.
Panel 4: *All three of them with weapons drawn, stand against the Enemy*
Shio: "Lets take care of this together!"
- Nice

Again, not much to say but great fights as usual.
I wonder, with magic are there Lore’s that deal with more specific tasks other than killing things? Like a magic location spell, or magic that changes hair color e.t.c Basically the magic  I see is all combat oriented. Even Shio’s water spells don’t have that sort of specific finesse of some magic you see popularly. Just curious.

Will get to the other chapters as soon as I can...

So I'm finally all caught up, dude! Good stuff.

Random question though. I'm not sure I asked but how did you make such a detailed map? It'd be great to make one too but yeah... Easier said than done.

Chapter 31 & 32
HEAVY RAYNE CHAPTER 31: Dual Lore

1.
Panel 4: *We see the figure is revealed to be Kai, sword drawn and stomping forward with a purpose*
    - Hahaha nice.

2.
Panel 2: *They look to Shio, who is out of breath*
Shio: "We need to completely destroy it, otherwise when it disipates, it'll just regenerate"           * dissipates

3.
Panel 2: *Leaz pats him on the back hard*
Leaz: "Then lets leave her to it and focus on our part"
*let’s

4. Panel 5: *He gestures out to Amber, who is strafing the creature*
Leaz: "It wont sap as much of our energy, if we use it"
* won’t

5
Panel 4: *The Major smiles cockily*
Kai: "Okay, maybe I need to work on my timing as well"

-Nice. And to think that the two of them failed so spectacularly. I wanted to see an epic Lore

HEAVY RAYNE CHAPTER 32: True Bonds

1.
Panel 1: *We join the group still in the forest, sat slightly away from the stream. Night has fallen. A small fire has been lit in the center of the group. We see Leaz standing gazing into the flames, several bandages wrapped across his head, neck and right arm*

-Haha, I haven’t seen Times New Roman used in quite a while

2.

Panel 1: *Kai stands back up, still looking down at Shio*
Kai: "If I had to guess, I'd say that you attempted a Dual Lore spell, but it backfired..."

             Kai: "Because of you"

- I suspected as much, though mostly because of Shio’s inability to use other magics or something.

3.

Panel 1: *Shio doesn't make eye contact and keeps his head down*
             Shio: "I'm sorry"

Shio: "I let you guys down..."

- It’s cool that he apologized.

4.

Panel 6: *Leaz glares at him*
Leaz: "Its for being an idiot!"
   *It’s

5.
Panel 2: *Leaz lets go of his collar, looking imploringly at Shio*
Leaz: "It was my idea to try the Dual Lore, not yours. So if anyones to blame, its me!"
   * it’s
- So Leaz isn’t a complete douche after all. Though for some reason I think of him as Malfoy.

6.
Panel 3: *Shio looks at Kai skeptically*
- Hmm... Suspicious indeed.

Hey dude, sorry for the very late responses!

Thanks for reading dude. Now in regards to the spells. The short answer is.....yes. There are spells in the lores of magic that are used for non-fighting purposes, however there isn't stuff like you'd see in harry potter or fairy tail (self scrubbing pans and stuff like that). The lores are primary designed to be combat oriented. I'm glad you picked up on it, since its a plot point that comes into play later on (magic being a primarily destructive force).

As for the map. That was just done on MS Paint  But before I did it, I sketched one out on paper before, so I had an idea of the geography. Maybe its something I could go into a bit more on my school of thought thread  :hmm:

Oh!!! Folks a huge thing I need to ask. But for the story. Would you enjoy it more in a novel/prose form, as opposed to script?

This would be a big undertaking to change 33 chapters of work (and counting), but if it made for a better way of telling the story, then I would knuckle down and plough through it.

Yeah I think novel prose would be great. But then again I don't want to ask you to change 34 chapters worth of work. That's some solid output man. Might be the most ever in MR history I think :hmm:

1.
Quote
PAGE ELEVEN

Panel 1: *Shio, Leaz and Amber have closed ranks*
             Shio: "Who are you!?"

Panel 2: *From the treeline, more men step forward, carrying flashlights and all in similar grubby fatigues. Many have weapons in their other hand*

- I wonder how the flashlights work for some reason. An ore or magic? Random question I know, but I'm wondering if magic is common enough to be used in every day object or are resources still enough for 'technology' to still be the more practical way to achieve things.

2.

Quote
Panel 3: *The man raises an axe in his hand menacingly*
Man: "I don't take orders from you Bannon...."

Man: "...and I don't take disrespect either"

Panel 4: *Bannon seemingly unfazed by the gesture, waves him away as he continues walking*
Bannon: "I ain't firewood so put that axe down Drayl"

Hmm, the line didn't feel as threatening as it should for some reason

3.

Quote
Panel 1: *Amber stands looking at the two downed figures*
Amber: "Next time you threaten a woman..."

Panel 2: *She stands with a scarily fierce look on her face*
Amber: "Make sure it's not one that can kick your ass with her hands tied behind her back!"

*Claps hands

Now that was badass

4.
Quote
PAGE ELEVEN

Panel 1: *They both then turn to Shio*
Leaz: "Guess soaking them to death isn't going to do much good"

And this was just rude. I laughed man

5.
Spoiler

Panel 5: *A smile passes her face as it nears her*
             Tachi: "Sound Lore...."

Panel 6: *Her fist meets out and punches the fireball*
             Tachi: "Verse of Discord!"

Eeeeeh!? Sound Lore magics?! Hacks! It must be! Just how many magics are out there. I share Kai's surprised to be honest.

I thought you would switch to prose for the later chapters, but I suppose that is planned for some massive rewrite? I suspected the girl would escape, but am really interested in knowing who the culprit is this time.

Really like the dynamic between the characters, and thank goodness things aren't too predicteable and follow a certain logic. Shio surrendering to find out information felt so real of a character thing to do I was really impressed. It's nice to see a shounen-esque story have characters with actual gray matter between their ears.

Taichi of the seven swords thing though... I excpected an epic sword battle for some reason.

This arc has been pretty long. I'm looking forward to seeing how things wind up. It's been pretty fun, but I particularly enjoyed the first arc and would love to see more of that sort of action!

Keep at it man

General thoughts on chapter 35 and 36
Quote
Panel 5: *She looks surprised*
             Tachi: "Silent Sc--"

             Shio: "Water Lore, Crashing Wave!!!"

Quote

Panel 2: *Suddenly, they all throw down their weapons*
             Bandits: "We surrender!"

I found myself having difficulties imagining how these panels would be drawn. Maybe because events are described as to what's happening on the panel rather than as they're happening? Er... in past tense rather than continuous. It's easier to know how many actions fit with the dialogue when you write e.g

Shio *Hands stretching out* : Water Lore!

or

Tachi *surprised*: Silent Sc-

I get what happens, but it felt weird as I first read it because all I saw was that she was surprised. Now I know she's being interrupted by Shio, but the flow felt wonky.

Just nit picking pretty much.

Otherwise it looks like it reached another lull for the action. There's some pretty good story content there, and it seems things are building up for the grand conclusion with the peace festival. It's great that Shio is finally an officer and not eternally in cadet mode. I haven't been keeping up so the others' are fading from memory so maybe some screen time would be nice for them in the future. Curious as to the Westlanders and their system of magic.

Also wondering how effective Sound Lore is. It seemed nasty that it could distort fire, but what about actual damage to a human body? I can imagine any number of horrible (and effective) effects it could have on enemies, so it felt weird how splash-damagy her attacks were.

Kai's effective use of Earth law was pretty cool. Made me think of Kakashi from Naruto.

Nice to see the story continuing! Keep at it.
