Suuper's non-manga art
« on: November 29, 2012, 05:37:04 PM »
i realised one of the pages i drew wasnt manga and wondered where i post it, and here seemed the best place. sorry if i'm wrong but i think im right :P
just a bit of perspective exercise, as i get close to starting my manga, i need to work on drawing buildings, basically other background objects. this is the first few drawings of perspective i have done since school like 5 years ago (wow thats a long time :P )

i think i will draw a lot more stuff, like buildings, weapons, wehicles and stuff, so keep tuned as well

also realised that i actually want to get good at drawing other suff as well, not just manga. portrait kind of stuff, so here are some copies of photos i happened to have on my laptop (of myself)
the bottom self portrait is a bit confusing cos i shaded it a bit too much , i am 19, not 90 like in the picture, white but have afro hair :P oh and i look nothing like the picture :P

oh and drawing with a ballpoint pen is a pain when it comes to complex shading, gotta learn to shade better (notice i didnt say gotta use pencils or something)

Shading with a pen is basically crosshatching. If you want to learn that, go through this thread: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?117915-Guidelines
It's through crosshatching that you show variations in tone and texture. I often do crosshatching with my pencil, as well.
Anyway's it's cool that you want to do some traditional art. If you ever need any advice/guidance in life drawing you can ask me anything.

thanks ryan i always find your tips useful. normally i do shade crosshach, but its would be closer to say i wasnt sure how to shade it in the first place, like i didnt know what i wanted (i suppose that means i dont know how to do it...). i will take a look at the link and see if i learn anything from it.

well part of the reason of me wanting to do more realistic art is i feel that will help me progress faster to be able to draw manga, as if i can draw realistically well, then i can easily simplify it down. i hope :P

EDIT: the link proved very useful, i have learned a lot from it. hopefully this will show in my next drawings i hope.

Make sure you do your self portraits in the mirror

a mirror is difficult on two accounts,
1-its a pain to actually have it so i can see myself where i draw (difficulty in set up)
2-when you see something, you see it in 3d, and to have the mirror close enough so i can see myself creates too much error making 3d into a flat drawing. i'm not too good at closing one eye either if i only want to see 2d

i do understand that no.2 isnt really a reason its more of an excuse.
i know its a good idea, its just not at the moment.

actually, ryan, why is that better than working from a photo? now that i think about it nothing comes to mind.
i draw from my laptop screen so i can enlarge it nicely.
