How much is a mangaka's salary?
« on: August 07, 2011, 01:48:05 PM »
i was just wondering do any of you guys know how much a mangaka gets for a page of manga?
and im talking about a comic artist doing a non-colored manga page to be published in America.
lets say, the artist has never been published but has years of experience doing manga. what would be the minimum rate for an artist with no pro experience doing a non colored manga page.

how much for a colored, as well? i hope someone could answer.  :push:

What I could find was that:
A "mangaka" in USA is counted as a fine artist
Some people say that they make 100$ per page
other says 100-300$
I don't think that any experience besides published experience counts. As in the art doesn't matter if the books/pages/whatever won't sell.

edit: I'll need someone to back this up though

It could be an idea to first begin as an assistant. You will easily be published and the salary depends a lot of the popularity of the manga, it could change if the manga is more or less popular and that is a consequence of the talent of the mangaka.

*nod nod*
But someone new on the market would probably make the 100$ per page. Still.... the backing up part is... :sure:

edit: 100$ is based on the number I've seen the most times on the pages I've found

because that's what he does.

on topic though. i know it's dependent on both how long the author has been published and how popular the manga is. though i can't say any specific numbers

Warning: Is not to be taken seriously.

The simple answer is not as much as they would like. This is the reason some of the popular ones attend large cons. They get paid for making an appearance and can better promote their works.

Guys guys look at what the man wrote o_o

Minimum rate, (no pro experience/has long experience of doing manga)*, never been published.

So... A newly published comic artist who has never before been published. How much would he make per page? Let's just say on average basis, since there's no need to look at the minimum... Minimum sucks.

*/ignore I suppose since it contradicts itself :push:

And there's also the fact that the salary may be different if you publish your manga in a magazine or if you publish it  as a book.

well i guess absolute minimum would be virtually nothing, assuming they get a bit of attention, might be a bit. it depends a lot on luck as well i think for a bit until you have got yourself a reputation

i think that still depend on how big is the company/publisher. a smaller publisher would rate less per page than the average price per piece.. but the question still remains. how much is average?

Well i do know ideally i'd like to be a mangaka with more passion than aim for commercial success. It'd be nice to be like that.

The annoying thing though is that mangakas (at least the ones i'm concerned with) don't have a celebrity sort of fame where they talk regularly to the fans and reveal their life. Most of the times i love this aspect, but i wouldn't mind knowing more about their personality and what have you.

No, i'm not interested in scandals. I could care less of those.
