Well the time has arrived. My friend circle has organized a mini-comicon with a group of around 20 of us for an afternoon of costume fun.
Needless to say, my craft skills have been waiting for my hand to be forced into cosplay. And forced they have been.

I'll be updating with both my costume build but also general costume related things as well.

Without further ado, my very first piece of foam armour has been made. It's not actually part of my character but just a test, to see what my base ability at this new skill is. And, honestly, given it's not painted or finished, it came out pretty not bad.

The fit is actually quite good, as soon as I blur my face I'll post that shot too.



Working with the craft foam isn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it also isn't as easy as I thought, like, you have to pay attention to get good results, but as long as you follow a bunch of basic rules, you'll get good results it seems.

My current project is quickly making a casual shirt, to get used to working with large fabric pieces and patterns, something I never got into before, having only made small zip purses previously (such as in my craft thread)

It's actually a modified outfit from an anime character, so it's half my design, sort of using them as a base. I'll share more soon but you'll have to stay in the dark for now.

Bear in mind the helmet is completely unrelated.

(and no binary-search for the anime release date!) I'll only answer once regarding the release date of the anime :P

playing around with a dremel and foam to get battle damage and rivet features etc. very versatile tool.

2. Are they from an anime/manga?

lol ahahaha
but true. So very awesome

2) They are indeed from a manga/anime. Since I sort of alluded to that earlier I'll add a clue for free, they are originally from a light novel (from which multiple anime and manga have been adapted). Although I doubt that helps much :P

Update:just some paint tests. Doesn't look too bad considering it's just foam underneath. I haven't yet got the chance to try "weathering", where you make it look used and old, by painting layers of dirt and black in the crevices, but I'll try that super soon. The idea is that with the battle damage, the paint layer is removed revealing the "metal" underneath. It doesn't look as cool as the tutorials I've seen, but maybe with a bit more effort I can get a better shot.



Also made a test piece of armour, painted and added straps. It's not part of my altered design or the original character, so it's kinda like a bonus piece of kit at the moment, same as the helmet. Just practising to gain skills. It fits nicely and the straps and buckles hold well. I might do a tutorial for it at some point since it's super easy and costs virtually nothing.



A bit of sewing test on scrap fabric, using a coat I had as a template I'm trying to make adjustments to suit the style of my characters coat. So i just made half a coat to see how it fitted. Honestly not too bad of a fit but needs a couple of minor adjustments before I do it on my real fabric. Also needs to be wayyy longer but couldn't use precious fabric up just to test the length :P

Of all things the sleeves are saddle sleeves, meaning the sleeve part goes all the way up to the neck. Apparently that's a lot harder to do but we'll see. Seemed just as difficult as everything else I've done so far so maybe it's all just difficult lol.



13 days left to the event and I'm feeling the crunch a bit, but I'm getting all the unknowns out of the way first and then it should be plain sailing I hope. Where I can I'm trying to finalize stuff rather than having everything half finished. So starting to paint things where I can.

3. Is the genre high fantasy (that is: is it legitimately a fantasy series without any sci fi elements? AKA: no time machines, so 'sucked into a video game' isekais, etc.)

3) Took me a while to process the term since I wasn't too familiar with it but yes, it is indeed High Fantasy.

It's not a massively niche character to be honest :P

Although on a separate note one gets the feeling that high fantasy could coexist with sci-fi?
I.e a steampunk isekai or something.

Well that's why I defined the term further, lol. These things can mean different things to different people. I was specifically trying to rule out things like Sword Art, because while the setting is broadly fantasy, it's based entirely in science fiction. Science fantasy (a term I definitely just invented, don't look it up), would be better for that kind of thing.

5. Did this light novel come out in the last five years?

I think that "so" is a typo? i took it to mean only time machines were out and everything else was in. you meant "no 'sucked into a game', isekais etc"?
In that case my genre is NOT High Fantasy. There is some element of modern science involved. Sorry for the confusion I don't know sub-genres very well.

5) As for the light novel, the first volume came out pre 2017

An almost finished (unpainted) boot. It's actually a shoe cover that attaches via velcro to a pair of old trainers. Pretty nifty eh? I stole that idea straight off YouTube along with a lot of other methods and techniques.
This is a major upgrade from the anime version so dont go looking for clues since the details are almost all my own.
Gotta actually make the second one now tho lol



Also the tiny armguard in the back has some nice weathering on it now, but also my own design so no clues there either lol

Almost starting to feel the crunch but I think a couple of good afternoons and I'll have everything super close. The only issue will be time for drying layers of paint, that can't really be sped up so I've got to allocate time for those wayyyy before the deadline.

Also sewing my own coat is being a bit of a nuisance, just because of dyeing fabric and making sure I've got enough fabric and trimmings to make something so big.

hmm... I feel like it's obviously some sort of isekai, which is a genre I personally dislike, so that's going to make this harder...
