Re: Writers Novel Marathon Workshop: SIGN UP BEFORE JULY 31ST
« Reply #15 on: July 29, 2017, 07:34:25 PM »
The real kickoff won't start until the 31st, and I will explain everything in full by then, but if you want to get ahead, I suggest you look up the videos from Lecture 1 and have a genre and/or idea you want to turn into a novel. We'll be hitting the ground running on the first day, and our first Review Session will occur just tomorrow after that.

I have no doubt it'll be a rough start the very first day, and perhaps not everyone will be ready to start running when it comes, but at least having some general sense what you want to write beforehand can save you a lot of trouble when it comes time to turn in the first 1000 words on Tuesday. I'll go into more detail on Monday, however.  :D

That being said, it is important you show up on Monday to read up on what we plan for the 1st week. We'll be constantly on overdrive for the next two months, with special events and activities parsed throughout the workshop (Depending on time constraints and participation rate). There'll be things to do almost daily, so please plan ahead of time if something comes up (Hence why I call it a Marathon  :D ). I'll be willing to adjust the workshop to your needs if you let me know either as a post here in the Workshop Thread or via Personal Message.

It'll be busy. It'll be work. But it'll be lots of fun, and you'll instantly get the satisfaction of having others react to your own work and gain insightful knowledge about writing techniques and styles  8)

Today's the last day to sign up! After 8 AM PST on Monday, I will be closing the registration and the workshop will officially begin!  :D

For those who have already signed up, I highly suggest you plan for some time off tomorrow to get you up to speed what will happen come Tuesday, when our first Review Session will take place. If you have any questions or concerns about the workshop, or perhaps even some suggestions, I'll be happy to oblige them as we start counting down to the opening of the Novel Marathon Workshop.

I'd participate if I hadn't done exactly this with my stories  Looks like I novel'd prematurely.

@OhGodHelpMe
Well, to be fair, it isn't exactly novel format. More like a mix of script and novel structure  :-\ Perhaps you can try your hand at converting it fully to novel format  ;D See how that goes. Oh, and perhaps you'd be better off starting a new venture with this one. Even if it's similar to something you already have, the workshop is designed to have a disconnect between works you've done in the past to the work you've posted based on the knowledge from the reviews and lectures.

Either way, it'll be fun! I expect you'll have a much easier time than most other people coming up with ideas, with all your track record here  8) Maybe you could test a different genre you're struggling with  ;)

Ok i guess i'll go ahead and sigh up for this. I've been debating it but what's to loose right! Nothing to loose, but much learning to gain. Count me in

I probably shouldn't since I already have so much on my backburner, but I'll go ahead and do this anyway. I had a new story in mind I wanted to try writing anyway  :hmm:

All I can say is that these are the sort of workshops that make the forum go round. Pretty great initiative Operative. Looking forward to seeing novels come out of this!

I won't be able to join because I`m a fool and a Gardener as that video put it. I never do outlines and planning. I just go with the flow so structured stuff is really hard for me to do

Thanks for the support Lego!  ;D It'd be nice to have you join too, but you do you  ;)

To be fair, this is a pretty big commitment even for myself.  :push: I myself don't have that much free time, juggling between here and the forum, but here's to success for everyone who sticks with us to the end!  :D

As a final reminder to anyone who are still sitting on the fence for this workshop, the registration will close about 12 hours from now, at 8 AM Pacific Standard Time. After that, whoever we have on the Current Writers List are in. If you did list yourself to join, but I did not add you to the list for some reason, PLEASE NOTIFY ME BEFOREHAND! It is vital I get you up to speed at the very beginning so you don't fall behind when the writing starts. No drop-ins will be accepted once the workshop is in progress because of that reason.  :ninja:

Re: Writers Novel Marathon Workshop: Welcome to Day 1
« Reply #26 on: July 31, 2017, 11:00:12 AM »
The Writers Novel Marathon Workshop has officially begun! With it begins our long-winded and tear-inducing journey to create your very own novel! (Or at the least something resembling one  :sure:)

From July 31st to September 17th, we will be working nonstop, writing, drafting, and revising our stories through the days ahead. There will be three review sessions every week on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Ideally, you should be writing approximately 1000 words every day in order to meet the goal of 50,000 words by the end of this workshop. Some of you may write more. Some of you less. That doesn't matter!  8) So long as you finish your novel from start to end by the end of this workshop, you will have accomplished a great feat that only few writers can claim for themselves. On the rare occurrence that one of you ends up writing a full novel before the end of this workshop, feel free to stick around and review others at your leisure. Do note that there is no benefit to finishing your novel early, as you still would need to wait until the very last day on September 17th for it to be placed in contest among the rest.

Depending on the progress of the workshop, there will be special events to help you brainstorm and develop ideas for your novel. They are optional, but I highly recommend participating in them when they come up. I will announce them at least a week ahead of time so that you may plan accordingly. These events will never be scheduled during a Review Session day to avoid time conflicts.

Now, in preparation for the 1st Review Session scheduled for Tuesday tomorrow, each and every one of you will need a "Portfolio" to keep tabs on your work and progress. What do I mean by this?

Story: Example Name
Genre: Example Genre

Synopsis: ...

Story Links
Link to Part 1.
Link to Part 2.
Etc...

Review Links
Link to Day 1.
Link to Day 2.
Etc...

Your portfolio will more-or-less follow this format. You will edit or create a new post here on this thread for which you will store all your updates to your particular story. This is to keep things organized and prevent the agony of needing to flip through multiple pages to find what you're looking for. When you are done creating your "Portfolio", send me a Personal Message containing a link to your thread. I will add them to the Original Post at the front so you and others can have quick and easy access when opening this thread. This needs to be done as soon as possible, preferably before you post your first entry on Review Day.

One other thing before I let you all off to write your first thousand words: I must have some idea what genre you intend to write on. This is so I can group everyone into Review Groups in preparation for tomorrow. We are a sizable workshop as it stands, and it would be madness to require you to review everyone in the group, so I'm limiting the required review to only that within your Review Group. You are free to review others outside your group, however you must do your own group first. You can inform me of your choice either through Personal Message or by simply stating the genre within your portfolio once you have it up. I will have more details on what the Review Sessions will entail on Tuesday.

Just remember, we could care less about how atrocious your writing is, or how grammatically incorrect or misspelled your words are, or anything else. Just as long as you get your words down on paper and take advantage of the workshop, you'll be spitting out quality books in no time!  8) Just get those words out! I'll be keeping a word tracker per-day on the OP to help give you an idea how far you are with your novel  ;)

Until then...

:flagoftruce: Welcome to Day 1 of the Writers Novel Marathon Workshop! :flagoftruce:

Story: The Coming Storm
Genre: Steampunk Historical Military Fantasy

Synopsis: Seven years ago, a terrible war was waged in the Geioic Seas that left the once-prosperous island nation of Mariana in ruins. Although they left the war as victors against their Elsian invaders, the scars of battle has yet to heal the people's hearts and minds. Now, invigorated by a charismatic and staunch leader, Mariana has turned from a quiet, isolated republic, into an authoritarian military-state. With war brewing in the air once again, it seems the peaceful life that Allen Touler knew will come crashing down on him once more.
